Your Gateway to Full restoration . 1

    • Text: Acts 16:25-26 ……Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God ……….. doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose.

“The man that wanders out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead”, said the writer of Proverbs 21:16. What this presupposes is that, understanding is very principal to divine benefits, otherwise one will be traversing roaming aimlessly in the wilderness of life. It is unfortunate that lots of people daily approach the seat of mercy of God for their promised full restoration while it is a negligible few that return with testimonies of the restoration. Kindly note dear beloved in Christ that the blessings of God are available for your take but they are not given automatically. His blessings are released on the satisfaction of certain demands. It is written in Deut. 28:1- 14 that, Full restoration of God’s blessings is dependent on your willingness to fully obey and carefully follow all the commandments of God. Anything to the contrary is a life of defeat and curses (Deut. 28:15-68).

The Gateway to full restoration means that there are certain highways to triumph over the issues of life with the capacity to lead one from glory to higher and greater glory. One of the highways to Full restoration is Praise. There is a highway of praise. Praise is appreciating God for who He is and what He is capable of doing. It is appreciating Him in words and songs for what He had done and more importantly for what you are trusting Him to do. High praises are the highways of God to the high places of life. This highway is a freeway that keeps you going from triumph to triumph, from victory to victory and from testimonies to greater testimonies.

From our text, Paul and Silas were brought before Magistrates for their works of evangelism and the deliverance of a possessed lady. The Magistrate consequently stripped them of their clothes and ordered that they should be beaten thoroughly. After he had satisfied himself, he cast them into prison and they were put into the inner prison, they had their feet fastened in the stock and were treated as hardened criminals. But at midnight, mindless of the situation they were in, Paul and Silas prayed and sang songs of praises. The moment they changed the gear from prayer to praise, heaven came down, there was an earthquake, the foundations of the prison shook, the chains of the prisoners were loosed, doors of the prison were opened, the narratives were altered, the captives became the captors and the ones to be destroyed became the deliverers.

Beloved in Christ, Praise is a command by God to every living being (Psalm 150:6). Praise is not focussing on happenings, praise is spotlighting God’s faithfulness and relying on the efficacy of the Scriptures. Praise is concentrating on the integrity of God and the insight received about His integrity. The Psalmist in Psalm 22:3 says that “God inhabits the praises of His people”. When God sees genuine praises, He brings heaven down and when heaven comes down, all natural powers, laws and restrictions are suspended.

Dear brothers and sisters, when praise becomes your lifestyle, victory over the devil and his agents becomes your heritage. Consequently, whatever cannot withstand God is not permitted to stand against you. Let me ask you, are people ganging up against you? Are you being maligned by friends, family or your church members? Is there a plot to bring you down or schemes from the kingdom of hell to exterminate you? I have good news for you, there is no loss in praise. When you step up your genuine praise, God will step into your battlefield, He will take over your fight, He will turn your enemies against one another, all those that are fighting you shall destroy one another and you shall possess the gates of powers that rose against you (cf 2 Chro 20).

As you step up your praises beloved, please know that your Full restoration is confirmed. The mountains of hindrance before you shall be brought down, that valley of death shall be lifted up and the crooked paths of challenges shall be made straight. You shall continue to live a life of victory and His name forever glorified in your life. It is possible to pray amiss but it is impossible to praise amiss. As you come to God with a penitent heart and praise the Lord with your heart during this season of Lent, I can assure you that your story will change of it’s own accord and people shall gather to celebrate God’s faithfulness to you in the name of Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, accept my sacrifice of praise and cause my raising to begin from now in the name of Jesus Christ.

  • Ambode’s wife, others seek mangrove forests’ restoration, desert reclamation

LAGOS State Governor’s wife, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode has commended Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF) has called for the restoration of mangrove forests  and reclamation of deserts.

Mrs Ambode, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of the Environment, Mr. Biodun Bamgboye, spoke at the NCF dinner held in Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

She praised the body for its efforts on the “Mangrove restoration” projects aimed at restoring the country’s mangrove to about 70 per cent of their original states.

“There is an urgent need for rehabilitation for the mangrove ecosystem to be stepped up if they are to continue to render services to the country,” Mrs Ambode said.

Also speaking at the event, themed: “Green recovery Nigeria – Restoring the mangroves and reclaiming the desert” , NCF’s Board of Trustees President, Chief Philip Asiodu, said despite the Federal Government’s declaration and policies on reclaiming the lost forest to at least 25 per cent as recommended by Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Nigeria was yet to achieve five per cent of this figure.

NCF Director-General Dr. Muhtari Aminu-Kano, in his speech, observed that the degradation of pristine mangroves and desert caused by various human activities need to be tackled with utmost urgency.

He noted that the country has one-third of the mangroves in Africa, making it the largest in Africa and the third largest in the world.

Giving a breakdown of the spread, he said the Niger Delta mangroves are estimated to provide 60 percent of the spawning grounds of fishes in West Africa. “Mangroves absorb carbon and they determine the livelihood of the coastal dwellers. Nigerian mangroves make up 40 percent of the remaining original forests in Nigeria and cover 10,500 square kilometres,” Aminu-Kano said.

He is however saddened that mangrove degradation was being caused by oil pollution, firewood cutting, over-exploitation and sand filling, among other factors.

He further said the Savanah covers 35 percent of the total land area of the country, while it caters for 35 million people in 11 states. A healthy Savanah ecosystem provides, he explained, provides food, fibre and other valuable economic and social services, adding that Nigeria is losing about 351,000 hectares of its land mass to desert conditions yearly.

This is why participants at the dinner all agreed that huge effort is needed to reclaim the desert so that current and future generations can benefit from the livelihood and ecosystem services provided by the Savanah.

At the event, NCF recognised the contributions of some personalities to the environment. For instance, the Environmental Stewardship Award was given to Mrs. Ajoke Murtala-Muhammed, wife of the late Head of State, General Murtala Muhammed, in recognition of her strong commitment to environmental sustainability in Nigeria through the establishment of botanic gardens, poverty alleviation and promotion of sustainable development globally.

The other recipient, Dr. Olufunso Amosun, founder/initiator of Green Education for the Youth (GEFTY), was recognised for her contributions in safeguarding the Nigerian environment through advocacy, awareness and youth mobilisation.

At the event, NCF created awareness and sought support for its Green Recovery Nigeria Initiative, with a focus on restoring the mangroves and reclaiming the desert.

  • IBB speaks dreamily of restoration

AFTER he visited former military head of state Ibrahim Babangida in Minna, PDP presidential aspirant Ahmed Makarfi, a former governor and senator, issued a statement recounting the support and admonition he received from his host. According to Senator Makarfi’s spokesman, Gen Babangida was quoted as saying the following to the aspirant: “We need a new narrative in this country. We can’t go on like we used to. We need an articulated vision of a new Nigeria. I am not surprised that you give such narrative of the country. You did well in the legislature and you handled well one the most civilised and sophisticated states in Nigeria. You have my blessing and I will look forward to hearing from you on some of these articulations I heard from you today. Honestly I feel so proud. I was almost losing hope in the country; as a military man I wouldn’t. But having heard from the distinguished senator, I have become more enlightened and emboldened to say we have hope in Nigeria.”

Gen Babangida has not shown as much remorse as he should for creating the fertile ground for the existential crisis Nigeria has been experiencing since the annulment of the 1993 presidential election won by the late MKO Abiola. That crisis, without question, actually triggered a chain reaction that still reverberates till today and sadly distorts the country’s politics. Gen Babangida speaks of restoration; unfortunately there is nothing to indicate the meaning of the word does not altogether escape him. He can of course support Sen Makarfi and be unequivocal about it, but he misses the point by a chasm what patriotism and leadership entail.

  • Total fuel leakage: Station, others clarify remediation, restoration

The remediation by the Akoka, Lagos Total filling station management in fixing its underground tank, which leaked fuel that polluted residents’water sources last year, has received commendations from government agencies and residents. They praised the firm’s management for its swiftness in addressing the leakage. However, a resident seems not happy and complains about the job which he describes as unsatisfactory. But the management of the filling station sees the complaint as an effort to sabotage its determination to make the area better than it was before the incident. EMEKA UGWUANYI examines the issues.

Few months after the reported incident of an accidental fuel leakage at Total filling station in Akoka, Lagos State, which resulted in contamination of the water sources of some houses, Total officials said they have since carried out a thorough remediation and fixed all that was necessary to bring the environment to its original state.

Various documents seen by The Nation and eyewitness accounts confirmed that the French oil giant met all requirements as well as restored normalcy to the affected water systems in the area.

The document obtained from Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), dated June 15, noted that contamination of water due to petrol leakage from the station’s underground tank was cleared. Some landlords in the area said the community was free from any form of contamination, praising the swift response of the management of the filling station after the leakage was reported.

Three landlords confirmed that the environment was safe. One of them, Mr. Razak Odufuwa, who claimed to be the landlord of No. 57, St Finbarrs College Road, Akoka, whose house was affected, admitted that there was an incident but commended the reaction of the company, which he said, acted swiftly to mitigate the effect.

“Initially, when the incident occurred, our water was contaminated and unsafe to drink or for any other domestic purposes. The station was the first to alert us; they disconnected all the water sources and gave us alternative source of water while they corrected the situation. They have corrected the situation, dug a new borehole in my house and I now have clean water as you can see (drinking water from the tap),” Odufuwa said.

Another landlord, Olusegun Oladipo, of No. 61, St Finbarrs College Road corroborated Odufuwa’s claim, adding that the company responded beyond their expectations as their situation was now better than how it was before the incident. “We now have new borehole with cleaner water supporting the government’s commissioned water system,” he added.

Similarly, another landlord explained that the situation has become a blessing in disguise, saying: “For sure, we were affected by the leak from their underground tank, but the situation has landed us several bore-holes with cleaner water supporting government’s commissioned water system.

“Any accusation against the company is purely malicious and has no basis because the company has done all that was required by law to do and more for us. As such, we are grateful for their swift action to contain the incident and provide an additional water system for the community of Akoka.”

Reports from various expert agencies, presented by the managers, indicated that the community can now go about their daily business without fear or concern. Besides, some dwellers in the area also confirmed to The Nation the swift and consistent response of the station managers towards the crisis, which occurred last August 13.

However, a resident, Ifeamaka Umeike, expressed dissatisfaction with the effort of the station, complaining that it had not yielded good result. According to her, the company claimed to have done remediation, but the area, she said, was still polluted.

“All we are saying is that the filling station should exhume and evacuate its fuel tank and replace it with new ones because the tank is still leaking,” she added.

However, the station dealer told The Nation that the right steps were taken and they have also been fair to all since the inception of the crisis till date.

Documents obtained by The Nation confirmed the steps the company said it took to manage the situation, and how it liaised with relevant stakeholders, including the Akoka Community Development Association, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and Bariga Police station in the remediation process.

They also presented the final certification reports declaring the area free and safe from pollution.

In LASEPA’s document sighted by The Nation, dated June 11, the community was declared free of water adulteration arising from petrol leakage from the station’s underground tank, following several tests.

They also presented a proof stratification certificate of conformity, dated September 29, last year, which indicated that the leakage had been fixed. In addition, the management of the station provided a document, which detailed how the management of the station held several meetings with government agencies and landlords in the area where it was formally resolved that the station should provide the affected houses with alternative source of water, conduct medical evaluation of residents of affected houses in recognised government hospitals, as well as provide affected houses with new boreholes.

The dealer of Total Service Station, Akoka, Mr. Aleem Maruf, admitted that there was indeed, fuel leakage in the station premises, but disagreed with the claim that the community was neglected.

He said: “On August 13, 2017, we discovered that there was fuel leakage in one of our underground tanks after we realised that 600 litres of petrol was missing. Immediately, we notified Total headquarters and our station at Apapa, which swung into action without delay.

“We started by disconnecting all the water sources immediately. The situation was appropriately reported to Bariga police station after which we alerted and invited all stakeholders including officials of the LASEMA, LASEPA and DPR. They all toured the community and took samples from houses to determine affected areas as well as extent of damage. By the end of the investigation, it was discovered that seven houses including the station were affected.

“Having done this, an agency, Terra Aqua Environmental Consultancy Limited, commenced remediation, which started right from the station. We were advised by LASEPA to get tank for all the affected houses and supply them water regularly for the period of the remediation. We bought Geepee tank of 2000 litres capacity for all affected houses and supplied them with government approved water four times in a week to ensure that they don’t lack water. We also made provision for medical check-up to be carried out at their convenience.

“By May 2018, the affected areas were declared free from pollution, hence, it was confirmed safe to drill new boreholes. As instructed by LASEPA, we have dug four boreholes while the 5th one is due for completion.”

Reacting to Ifeamaka Umeike’s claim, Maruf denied neglecting the community, stating: “On the day the sad incident broke, the lady in question was not around, she came back two weeks after we had cleared the environment and done the needful by law. However, remediation exercise was still ongoing. She commended the station on the efforts taken so far and this is glaring in a letter she wrote to us.”

The Nation saw the letter dated  August 30, last year where she (Ifeamaka) applauded the company’s swift action, stating: “I have to applaud the fact that they (Total station dealer) swung into action quickly. They provided affected residents with tanks of water, which they replenish periodically. While the filling station is quite responsive, I am yet to see any action taken by Total Nigeria Plc.”

Maruf also alleged that “she came back to complain that her pipe connections has been polluted. And I wondered how that could have happened because I had disconnected all the pipes in the affected areas when the leak was discovered while she was away. But I heeded and changed all her pipes again. Note that while other houses have 2000 litres of Geepee tank, I gave her (Ifeamaka’s) house 7000 litres of Geepee tank with pumping machine that takes water directly to her apartment to fulfill her desires’’.

“Three days after, she came back to my office and asked me to change her washing machine hose, which she claimed got contaminated by the leakage. Without arguing, I set out for a new hose but she was discontented with eight different hoses I brought, insisting they did not fit her washing machine. She eventually requested for a new washing machine and asked me to get her a 7kg washing machine that cost N250,000 as against her 3kg type. She came back the second day to thank me and told me I was free,” Maruf said.

The Nation sighted a receipt of the 7kg washing machine and a picture of the old washing machine.

Nonetheless, Maruf said: “She was doing all this after the remediation has been certified okay by the agency in charge. As a matter of fact, we have started digging boreholes, so far, we have dug boreholes in four houses, and the fifth one is ongoing. But she refused to let us dig in her apartment, but we eventually dug it with the intervention of security personnel.

“However, she still complained that the water is not neat, whereas, water from other houses where we dug the same borehole had no issue, so we suspected she was sabotaging our efforts, especially considering the fact that there is a government borehole in the same house producing potable water.”

Maruf also explained what led to the fuel leakage, as well as steps taken to avert future occurrence.

  • Restoration: Celebrating six years of robust youth empowerment

An x-ray of the youth-friendly policies and programmes of the Restoration Administration would clearly distinguish Governor Seriake Dickson as MR. YOUTH.  His passion about developing the youths is unparalleled in the history of Bayelsa politics. No official pronouncement, statement or action is complete without a mention of the youths as leaders of today (not tomorrow) as some people may want people to believe. The passion and enthusiasm emanated from the fact that the youths hold the key to tomorrow therefore society grows and ultimately develops when youths deploy their energies into productive use.  About 65.7% of Bayelsa Population is youthful.

Again, the Governor’s zeal for youth empowerment is in keeping with his inaugural address. In Governor Dickson’s inaugural address, he asserted thus: “We will invest in the development of other aspects of human capacity for our teeming youths, such that they will be able to unleash their creative capacities as well as enhance their drive for entrepreneurship”. In his address to mark the 16th year anniversary of the creation of Bayelsa State, Governor Dickson emphasized that: ” Government will use the resources of this State to fund critical projects such as the construction of good roads, education, health facilities, promote tourism, general wealth and develop agriculture, rather than use it to fund the corruption and greed of a few”  These two epochal addresses underscored the fact that investing in youths is the solar-plexus and thrust of his administration.

Youth Empowerment is a process where young people are encouraged to take charge of their lives. They do this by addressing their situation and then take action in order to improve their access to resources and transform their consciousness through their beliefs, values, and attitudes.  The overarching aim of Youth empowerment is to improve the quality of life. In the Restoration Administration, youth development is taken holistically.

In its holistic sense, youth empowerment connotes providing young people with abilities, skills and competencies that can enable them manipulate economic processes. Youth development has become so relevant in our society that even partisan observers hold the view that the Restoration Administration is the most youth-friendly administration since the creation of Bayelsa State. This is true in the light of pragmatic steps taken by the Restoration Administration. We can understand why for the first time, Governor Dickson established a separate Ministry of Youth Development at the beginning his administration. The Ministry was established specially to cater for the need of youths with a view to improving their wellbeing in terms of job creation, wealth creation, skills acquisition and poverty alleviation.

Government hit the ground running by collating database of existing manpower by the Ministry of Manpower Development and that of Youth Development. The data base provides robust opportunity for government to identify training needs; manpower gaps and how to fill such gaps by enabling government to build the capacity of youths for gainful employment or self-employment.

It was for this reason that the Ministry of youth Development mounted several capacity building programmes in technical and vocational skills, which included: Computer Technology; Welding; Auto mechanics; Electrical works; Plumbing and fitting; Hairdressing and Baking etc. By the end of these training programmes, some starter packs were given to participants.

In the Ministry of Agriculture and natural resources, hundreds of youths have been sent to the Songhai farms in the Republic of Benin on training in mechanized agriculture. The products of this programme will provide much-needed manpower in the State’s effort to leverage job creation through agriculture. These trainees work in the agricultural enterprises established by the State Government in cassava cultivation, aquaculture, and tailoring and computer science.

Expansion of the Scholarship Scheme at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The effort is designed to assist youths to acquire education at the tertiary level and to build up a formidable stock of human capital in critical areas of the economy. About 789 persons benefited from the scheme in the 2012/13 academic year and payments were have been made up till date. Even in lean years, the administration has consistently kept its promises.  This is not including the scores of students offered scholarships in the University of Pennsylvania, United States.

The administration its hands of fellowship to youths in cult groups. This administration assumed office with a burden of youth irredentism and proliferation of secret cult movements in the State. Governments resolve has been that these youths misled by previous administration can be accommodated by the Restoration Government upon renunciation. So far about 11,000 youths across the state renounced cultism. The Ministry of Youth Development in conjunction with other relevant agencies drew-up   programmes designed to build the capacities of repentant cultists for job placement in self-employment. This was a silver bullet that entrenched peace and security and as well as increased the stock of intermediate manpower in the State.

Governor Dickson reasoned and rightly so that one of the ways to occupy the minds of the youths and keep them useful was to recruit them into the  the Oil and Gas Committee, which was  designed to provide protection for travelers in the waterways and to curb pipeline vandalization, the operation of illegal refineries, and sea piracy. These vices have been drastically reduced.  Some youths were also enlisted into the Nigerian Civil Defense Corps.  This has contributed enormously to up the production of crude oil in the State.

Only recently, a youth of 33 years has been appointed a Commissioner. Even before then more than half of the Special Assistants and Senior Special Assistants are youths. Some of the Chairmen of Councils are also youths. So many were drafted into the Environmental Sanitation Authority into replace the tired hands, while others are in the revenue collection sector.  All those employed in government owned establishments such as the Cassava Industry at Ebedebiri, the Bayelsa Palm at Elebele, students offered scholarships at the University of Africa, Toru-Orua and the 500 fish farm at Igbogene are all youths.

Some jobs opportunities have been created in the Ministry of Justice where few people have been employed as magistrates, chairmen of Customary Courts and Counsels in the mainstream judiciary. Some have been employed in the broadcasting industry, while a good number of people have been absorbed in the education industry. About 1,000 youths benefit from the Industrial Training Fund and 250 youths were sent to the King Amachere Royal Academy to learn skills and capacities. Bayelsa’s economic will be skills-driven and a huge number of unemployed people with marketable skills will be mopped-up by Small Scale Industries.

Over 500 youths have been engaged in the Izon-Ibe Volunteers and this may be increased to 3000 in the foreseeable future. With the establishment of the Izon-Ibe micro-finance Bank, youths now have easy access to micro-finance to start their own businesses. With the increase in the self-employment index, the pressure on government has been reduced and the economy of the State is more productive. This is the meaning of paradigm shift on the road to industrialization.

Governor Seriake Dickson has revamped the educational system in the State to improve access and quality. Governor Seriake Dickson declared a State of emergency in Education and made primary and Post-Primary education free and compulsory. Implementation of this programme has taken off already though much still needs to be done.

New schools have been established to increase access and expand opportunities. In her efforts to open more frontiers and opportunities for Bayelsa youths, the following educational institutions have been established. While some have taken-off, others are ready to take-off soon.

    1. International Institute of Tourism and Hospitality.
    2. Teacher Training Institute at Bolou-Orua.
    3. Bayelsa State College of Arts and Science.
    4. Relocation and rejuvenation of the College of Education.
    5. The Sport Academy at Asoama
    6. The proposed Maritime Academy in Brass.
    7. Bayelsa State School of Languages
    8. Bayelsa State School of Music
    9. The University of Africa in Toru-Orua

It is estimated that some of the new schools will provide opportunity for youths to be trained at the intermediate level to enhance service delivery in the State, other high level manpower will be employed to teach in the schools.

Within the first 16 months, the Restoration Administration signed Memoranda  of Understanding with several development partners. Some of the MoUs are under the Public-Private Partnership arrangement. They include:

    1. Lagray Chemicals, USA for the development of Pharmaceutical Products.
    2. DST Petroleum Ltd for the establishment of a fertilizer plant in Brass.
    3. Octopol Energy Ltd for gas conversion.
    4. Goshen Treasures Ltd: for the Development of Bayelsa Plastic Industry.
    5. KABLETECH Nigeria Limited: For manufacturing of electricity cable.
    6. Ugboduma and Sons Ltd for the Development of Tourism city.
    7. Alyn Global Services Ltd: for building of aquarium facility.
    8. Clinotech Tunkey Management, Canada for the Production of quarry and other concrete works.
    9. Sivan Design to develop a world-class Computerized System to run its Geographic Information System (BGIS) with Complementary Service including Aerial Mapping.

These Mou Signed on PPP basic were facilitated on the Ministry of Trade and Investment and the Bayelsa State Investment Promotion Agency. Government has not been able to accomplish all the MoUs because of the economic down-turn occasioned by a slide in the price of crude oil. Now, the price of crude oil has bounced back and some business interests are showing interest in investment.

Several MoUs also exist in the hospitality industry, Agriculture, education, health and training. The dividends of these myriad Molls will be yielded before the end of the first tenure of the Restoration Administration. Again, government is sensitizing all MDA’s to mainstream Youth development as an important component of policy formulation, implementation and service delivery.

Bayelsa State is the solar plexus of the Niger Delta and over the years industrialization has taken a backseat. For most Bayelsa youths, government is the only business. This wrong perception has resulted in over dependence on government for everything. Another phenomenon Governor Seriake Dickson has been able to tackle is the tendency to seek for “easy money”. According to Gandhi, “wealth without work is sin”.

Basically youths in Bayelsa State are limited by  lack of Entrepreneurial skills. It was to fill this gap that an Entrepreneurship Centre has been established to train youths who want to acquire technical, business and entrepreneurial skills.  At the Entrepreneurship Centre, electrical works; Refrigeration Engineering and Repairs, Fashion Designing, Catering, Baking, Cloth Weaving; Tailoring, Plumbing, Wheel Balancing, Computer Operation, Auto Mechanics, Panel Beating, vulcanizing,  Shoe Making and Repairs, Spray Painting, Hair Plating/Weaving among 33 skill sets. The Centre is well-equipped to train low level and intermediate manpower.

Governor Seriake Dickson believes that youths are leaders of today, not just tomorrow. He has demonstrated this in his policies and programmes. This explains why the inclusivity of youths in Government programmes is given prime attention to ensure that youths are resourceful enough to take their rightful place in the development of society.

A clinical assessment of the Restoration Administration shows that Governor Dickson set out to operate an administration that is driven by young minds. This is borne-out of his policy of inclusivity in statecraft.  Recognizing that youths, especially trained youths are the catalysts of development, there is enormous emphasis placed on Youth empowerment in Bayelsa State now than ever before. A Don from the University of Port Harcourt, while delivering a paper in Yenagoa remarked that “ under the Restoration Administration of Governor Dickson, the youths of Bayelsa State have enjoyed more inclusion and visibility in running the affairs of the State”  Indeed  the Restoration administration is celebrating six solid years of robust YOUTH EMPOWERMENT.

  • PDP, APC and battle for Ekiti restoration

PDP, APC and battle for Ekiti restoration

In this piece, Rotimi Opeyeoluwa highlights the challenges confronting the Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) in its bid to bounce back to power.

Legendary British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said: “Democracy is the worst form of government-except all the others that have been tried”. Upon reflection, this view bears eloquent credence when juxtaposed with discoveries that some undesirable characters rode to power through popular mandate to unleash a most ferocious attack on the very democratic tenet that served them as ladder to great height of power.

Democracy holds a lot of promise for humanity when the electorates are truly informed, the ownership of government by the people; after all, it is defined as government of the people, by the people and for the people is glaring. However, some charlatans have often escaped detailed scrutiny through a combination of factors such as when the citizenry feel disenchanted or are impoverished in their reasoning; they simply are swayed by sentiments.

When such a scenario plays out, it not about the capacity or ability of the preferred to live up to expectation, it is about the electorates cutting its nose to spite its face. Feeling emasculated by reforms, public interest becomes the sacrificial lamb. Such is the case of Ekiti State.

It is a statement of fact that the Nigerian political system is such that it is the era of instant gratification where politicians dole out cash or other souvenir and are not subjected to background checks. In Nigeria, politics and cash are synonymous. Long ago, in the distant past, the pull to public office was service, our politicians spoke and wrote beautiful prose to articulate their position on any and every issue; arguments were made with great points.

The leading lights then were prepared but not any longer. Ultimately, we lost good governance for politics and Politics became an all comer’s affairs. The trajectory of Nigeria remains pathetic and uninspiring. The electorates abdicated its responsibility because of poverty of both the mind and the pocket. In Ekiti under Governor Fayose, the master political professor, who understands the game better than the descendants of the Progressives on the field.

It is just unfortunate that it is only in Ekiti that Courts were sacked, Judges were beaten with no a single reprimand. His obvious alleged involvement in the damnable drama of the absurdity is not tangential. There is no restraint or hallowed grounds in Ekiti, every ground is sinking ground. Fayose has devalued everything of value on the altar of politics.

As we speak, Governor Fayose is yet to make a single policy statement. He does not seek glory, but craves the limelight for all the wrong reasons on earth. His actions portray him as an individual who is not ready to approximate the moment for tomorrow, playing to the gallery is his notion of governance. His new Stomach infrastructure ideology is an embarrassment on the Ekiti people but unfortunately the residents wouldn’t see it as such because it has a high degree of politics and propaganda clouted therein.

Critically making a peer review of Governments’ policies, what comparison can a Social Security Scheme or Free Education make with doling out a handful of rice, chicken and the purchase of condiment in the open market? But it is a statement of fact that that is Politics and that’s what wins Election in this part of the world; Not governance! Elections are won with so many factors which includes, how often are you seen and associated with the people, how many people have you empowered, how accessible are you, how deep is your pocket, and most importantly, how sugar-coated are your lips? It is unfortunate as you may not want to believe, that it may take a long time, if care is not taken to defeat the political sagacity of his character who boasts of defeating all the three governors of the APC in different and collective elections in the State. No doubt he is an institution when the matters of elections erupt in Ekiti.

The APC’s loss in 2014 can only become meaningful if the party realises, as Dwight Eisenhower said, “the potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exist-and would always persist”. The former governor and other leaders of the APC must close ranks, bury their hatchet and forge ahead in a bid to rescue the state from the visionless marauders currently on parade. The electoral loss is not the end of any party-It bound to happen anytime, it is just a game. A thoroughly reformed and revamped APC bristling with talents, seasoned politicians and a buoyancy of spirit of its youth wing offers Ekiti the best opportunity to re-invent itself on or before the next round of elections.

The party is challenged indeed with leadership crisis and several schools of thoughts have evolved claiming ownership of the headship. Such are the Action Group led by a former Senator of the Ekiti Central, a Lagos-based political heavy weight and Media Giant, Senator Babafemi Ojudu; The Bibiire Coalition of the Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele, former Member of the House of Representatives, the Ikere group of Evangelist Bamidele Olumilua, former Governor of Old Ondo State, the Isan group led by Yemi Adaramodu, Dr. Fayemi’s Chief of Staff, the Restoration Group, the Ekiti Reconciliation Mandate, Network Alliance, Council of Elders Groups and a host of others. All these cannot help the renaissance of the party. It is imperative for the APC to demonstrate its willingness to prove itself. It is unlikely to say with exactitude how things will pan out in the days ahead but one indisputable fact is that the state party leadership as it stands needs to take charge and harmonize all these interests in fighting one enemy and encourage all aspirants-those who are on ground and those who are yet to join. Of all the aspirants in the Ekiti APC today, one must commend the spirit of Femi Bamisile, the ex-speaker of the State who dared the perilous storm and threw his hat into the ring to provide the required character to rally party members. No doubt in principle, he is currently offering leadership where a lot of the party leaders have since retreated in pursuit of other life’s desires. His mobilizations within the party have been on advantage being another great political grass-rooter and team player.  The time for renaissance in Ekiti beckons and it is advisable that the party should encourage as many as possible interested leaders in the seat of Governance to also throw their hats into the political ring and put in their own strengths too like Bamisile- The Adaramodus, the Alukos, Bamideles, Afuyes, Ojudus, Alakes and Oyebodes who are rumoured to be interested should show up now and not wait till six months to the party primaries in 2018.

A united APC with strategic planning can defeat the PDP anyday in Ekiti. Fayose has his own masters in the game.

  • Ogun, NSIA, Lafarge partner on Forest Restoration

The Ogun State Government, inpartnership with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and Lafarge Africa Plc, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the joint development of Ogun State Forest Landscape Restoration Project. The MoU was signed during President Muhammadu Buhari’s state visit to France. The MOU will enable the creation of a legal entity to develop the project, engage development agencies and climate change funds, and promote it to large agriculture and forestry investors.

The project is set to transform 108,000 hectares of heavily degraded land into an arable green area. It is designed to employ innovative approaches to achieve best-of-breed environmental, social and economic results. The first part of the area will be rehabilitated through mixed reforestation to provide biodiversity hotspots corridors, allowing nomadic herders to cross the area with their herds and encouraging subsistent farming. The other part will be leased to agro-industrial investors interested in the development of large-scale tree crop such as cocoa, coffee, rubber and oil palm as well as annual crops such as maize, sesame, cotton and cassava amongst others.

Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun, explained that the restoration and enhancement of the state’s forests benefits the environment and creates jobs in rural communities. Besides, he reckons that it will increase the pace and scale of restoration of forests, which is critically needed to address a variety of threats – including fire, climate change, deforestation and others – for the benefit of the ecosystems and forest-dependent communities. “This project will show that enterprise and achieving strong mitigation are mutually supportive in tropical agriculture,” Amosun said.

The Managing Director/CEO, NSIA, Mr. Uche Orji, said that ‘the NSIA Act permits us to participate in infrastructure projects of this nature. We are therefore committed not only to promoting economic development but also to stimulating greater environmental responsibility through the projects we support and participate in. We view this project as an important investment in sustainable development and remain focused on facilitating incremental participation in initiatives that reduce carbon foot print across the country and reverse deforestation for the benefit of future generations of Nigerians’.

Similarly, the Group Managing Director/CEO, Lafarge Africa, Mr. Peter Hoddinott, stated that ‘Our strong commitment to the environment and social sustainability of our operations and the communities within which we operate leads us naturally to support the Ogun State project that promises strong positive impact on these issues, particularly on climate change. The use of agro-ecology and agro-forestry principles in these project will increase their productivity, ensuring the land becomes one of Nigeria’s best carbon capture areas and generating  biomass waste that Lafarge intends to use to fire its cement kilns.’

In December 2015, France will host the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. That confab will aim to achieve a binding agreement to keep global warming below 2°C. In that context, the Ogun State Forest Landscape Restoration Project is a pioneering initiative demonstrating how a private group can join force with proactive public entities to launch sustainable projects and will position Nigeria as an African leader to launch sustainable Climate Change PPP projects

  • Nigerians urged to trust God for restoration

Nigerians were told yesterday that the country’s old glory will be restored if they believe in God “and work hard to ensure that selfish interest is substituted for national interest”.

Senior Superintendent Gabriel F. Akinadewo (Omo Jesu II)of Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide gave the advice during a special sermon to mark the church’s 51st founder’s anniversary.

The church was founded by Archbishop Isaiah M. Akinadewo on June 14, 1964.

The anniversary was celebrated with special thanksgiving in all parishes of the church, including the international headquarters in Ondo, Ondo State.

Speaking at the Restoration Parish of the church in Akute, Ogun State, Akinadewo said: “Nothing is too hard for the Lord, the God of all flesh to do. If and when Nigerians change from their evil ways, Nigeria will, once again, become the darling of all in the comity of nations”.

Quoting Jeremiah 17:5, the cleric said that Nigerians, for decades, had put their hope in human beings “and they have been disappointed. For this country to grow financially, spiritually, economically, politically and industrially, we must start to put our hope in God and, at the same time, do the right thing.

“According to Jeremiah 29:11, God has good plans for this country and its people but Nigerians are their own problems by deviating from God’s plans because of selfish interests. With the natural resources that abound in the country, there is enough for all Nigerians. Let us commit our ways unto God, trust Him and He shall bring His plans for us to pass.

“Nigerians are prayerful. In every street, you will see one, two or three churches. But it is not only the truth we know that will set this country free but the truth we do. We know the right thing to do and once this is done by removing selfishness from our thinking, God will move mightily to restore the old glory of this country”.

  • Harvest of restoration

    Harvest of restoration

God’s faithfulness, protection and provision were the theme of the celebration last Sunday at the second adult harvest of Restoration Parish, Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide in Akute, Ogun State, writes ibrahim adam

It was with joy, shouts of Halleluyah and praises to God that members of Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide, Restoration Parish in Akute, Ogun State celebrated its second Adoption Service (Adult Harvest) last Sunday.

Adorned with prayer gowns, according to various bands of the 50-year-old church, members, in unison, thanked God for the love, protection, provision and blessing He showered on them since the first Adoption Service of the parish was celebrated on November 24, last year.

The parish was dedicated on February 2, 2013.

In his goodwill message to the Adoption Service, the Primate, Founder, Prophet and Supreme Head of Motailatu Organisation Worldwide, Archbishop Isaiah Akinadewo, urged members to always fear God in their conduct and interaction with fellow human beings.

Quoting from Psalm 111:10, Proverbs 1:7 and Proverbs 9:10, the Primate told the congregation that nothing gets done unless God approves it and it is only people who fear Him who can get His favour.

The auditorium was filled to capacity as invited guests joined the members to celebrate God’s faithfulness.

    Senior Superintendent Gabriel Akinadewo presided.

Members of the harvest committee, led by the chairman, Senior Apostle Godfrey Dottie, his deputy, Prophet Moses Adefioye, the chairlady, Mother-in-Israel Esther Adeniji and the secretary, Moses Omafuagbarho, were wonderful as they welcomed all guests and ensured that they had a good time in the presence of the Lord.

The choristers rendered melodious songs and members of the Army of Salvation displayed their skills to the admiration of all.

Special gifts were presented to winners of the Bible quiz. They are Feyisetan Sode, Elizabeth Idowu and Deborah Olateju. The gifts were presented by the Head of Procurement, Dangote Group, Adeolu Masolanu, Senior Apostle Edward Adebiyi and Mother-in-Israel Angelina Adesusi.

Prophet Segun Oduneye, in a special message, urged the members to give to God what is satisfactory.

“God will respect you if you bring to Him qualitative offerings. You don’t grumble when you give to God because what you have was given to you by the same God. So, it is in your interest to give to Him because when you do that, He will bless you the more,” he said.

He also revealed that the love he saw in the church is worthy of emulation by other Christians.

Senior Evangelist Oluwatoyin Ajayi urged Christians to always resist the devil by obeying God’s instructions.

Highlight of the occasion was the launch of the 2015 ‘Saint Adekahunsi’ Almanac.
