    Disquiet over results’ delay

Students of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa (OFFA POLY) are not happy with the management over the delay in releasing their results. AFEEZ ADEYEMO (Mass Communication) spoke to some of them.

There is growing discontent among students of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa (OFFA POLY) in Kwara State over the management’s poor handling of their results. The school resumed for another session two months ago, but at the time of this report, the results of the last one were yet to be released for students to know their standing.

Except the graduating HND II students, who, CAMPUSLIFE gathered, were told of their results verbally, none of the returning students has seen last session’s results. This development is causing disaffection on the campus as some students have vowed not to pay their school fees until they see their results. They described their lecturers’ action as unjust.

Some students, who spoke to CAMPUSLIFE, lamented the development, saying it was becoming a tradition in the institution. Students expressed sadness, saying the non-release of their academic assessment was putting in tight corners because many did not know if they had carryover courses.

CAMPUSLIFE learnt that the development is not new. Students said several complaints were sent to the management through the Students’ Union Government (SUG), but all to no avail.

A student said: “We are crying out to let the management understand what we are going through, so that they can consider our plights by all means and release our result. We are not happy with this situation and we do not hope to complete our programmes beyond the fixed time. But, could we achieve this without releasing our results?”

A student, who simply gave his name as Adeola, said: “Depression is gradually setting in. The hope of some of our colleagues who wish to continue their academic career in the institution has been dashed because they did not know whether to apply for HND programme or not. Lecturers and Students’ Union leaders are not showing concern.”

For Afeez Temitope, a ND II Building Technology student, people suffer not because of the tyranny of the wicked, but because of the silence of the good people. Afeez faulted the SUG for its silence, wondering if the union leaders were elected by students.

Rukayat Olasinde, a ND II Computer Engineering student, said management should have no problem uploading the results on the school website to allay the fear of students.

Joseph Adeyemi, a graduating student of Marketing, wondered when things would get better in the school. “Delaying students’ results for long is abnormal and it is a threat to students’ academic pursuit. Students’ Union should be alive with its task and intervene on behalf of students,” he said.

Another graduating Mass Communication student, Solomon Ayorinde, said: “I was admitted under poor academic condition, which the management said would be corrected. This issue of delay of result has been the main challenge contributing setback to students. It is high time management considered students’ plight. There must be improvement.”

Reacting, the SUG Vice President (Academics), Obafemi Oyeniyi, said the union was engaging the management on the matter, adding that the students’ leaders had met with the management on number of period to bring the situation back to normal.

Obafemi, who was quoting members of the academic affairs in the school, said the problem may have been caused by disagreement between the management and the local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP).

He said: “After the polytechnic backed out of ASUP strike, it was discovered that some students’ examination materials were not submitted to the appropriate quarters, especially those returning from the industrial training. Some of them did not have any remark on their log books; some has misplaced theirs while some submitted to the wrong offices for approval. The office that is in charge of judging results is still rejecting results from some departments because of wrong approval. Therefore, these offices are still giving all the affected department chances to cross check their students’ materials properly before forwarding it for judgment.”

Obafemi assured students that their results would be released soon, while cautioning them against using violence to make their opinion known. This, he said, would make the bad situation to be worst.

South East teams record mixed results in Glo League

South Eastern teams suffered mixed results in the Glo Premier League Week 28 matches played yesterday across the country.

Out of the four teams playing in the elite division, only Heartland managed a win while Abia Warriors and Enugu Rangers that were involved in a derby played a goalless draw.  Enyimba lost to Lobi Stars at Katsina Ala.

Two goals, one in each half from Emeka Ogbugh and Clement Bobby in the 44th and 47th minutes earned the Naze Millionaires maximum points at home to sinking Nembe City.

The win catapulted the Owerri side to 40 points from 28 matches.

At the Katsina Ala’s Chief Emmanuel Akume Atongo Stadium, the Makurdi Bombers needed two penalties before subduing Enyimba of Aba under 90 minutes.

Lobi got the first penalty in the 49th minute but  captain Bunde Moses lost it before inspirational goalkeeper, Terkaa Melai stepped out to convert the second in the 65th minute for his sixth goal of the campaign- all from the spot.

The win took Lobi’s points tally to 41 with a game at hand-the inconclusive Week 27 league tie against Nembe City at Omoku.

Barnabas Imenger, Lobi’s Team Manager and a former international of repute, said Enyimba made life difficult for them adding that the People’s Elephant came to Katsina Ala with the sole aim of defending throughout the duration of the game.

Meanwhile, at the Umuahia Township Stadium, it was a fitting birthday to Enugu Rangers Director of Media and Publicity, Foster Chime who added a year and was also part of the Flying Antelopes’ team that secured a point off Abia Warriors.

Rangers have amassed 38 points from 28 games and are on course to stay in the premier league for another season but Abia Warriors despite the loss are still having a season to remember in their first season in the top flight. They have 41 points from 28 matches.

  • NSE may sanction 50 companies over delayed results

NSE may sanction 50 companies over delayed results

    •Slams N106m fines on 48 companies

A head of today’s deadline for extended timeline for quoted companies to submit their audited reports and accounts for the year ended December 31, 2013, there are indications that the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) may sanction not less than 50 companies over their failure to submit their period within the extended period.

The Nation’s investigation at the NSE showed that several companies have not submitted their audited reports while  others were making last-minute efforts to scale the deadline and avoid the poor corporate governance tag and sanction of the NSE.

Post-listing rules at the NSE require quoted companies to submit their earnings reports, not later than three months after the expiration of the period. Most quoted companies including all banks, major manufacturers, oil and gas companies, breweries and cement companies use the 12-month Gregorian calendar year as their business year. The business year thus terminates on December 31.

NSE’s regulatory filing calendar indicates that the deadline for submission of annual report for companies with Gregorian calendar business year was Monday, March 31.

However, on the heels of exclusive report by The Nation that less than one-third of the companies submitted their annual reports by March 31, 2014, the NSE had extended the March 31 deadline for a period of one month, giving companies that operate the Gregorian calendar year as their business year up till April 30, 2014 to submit their audited earnings reports for the year ended December 31, 2013.

The NSE had in an emailed response to media enquiry by The Nation attributed the extension to several requests for extension by companies. During the extended period, the companies will not be liable for any sanction.

A source at the Exchange yesterday ruled out possibility of another general extension, implying that the NSE would start applying relevant sanctions and tags as from May 2, 2014.

A headcount by The Nation indicated that not less than 50 companies might miss today’s deadline as several companies have not made required announcement for scheduled board meeting to consider their audited reports.

A report on sanctions and fines for similar defaults in 2013 obtained showed that the Exchange slammed about N105.9 million on 48 companies that delayed their results. The fines ranged between N200, 000 and N6.8 million.

The NSE had slammed some N60.2 million as fines on 34 companies for failure to meet deadlines for 2011 audited reports. With a range of N3.8 million and N100, 000, average fine for the year was N1.77 million.

The source at the NSE said the sanctions were not intended to generate incomes for the Exchange but to serve mainly as deterrents against corporate failures.

Meanwhile, market pundits said they expected the momentum of submission to be high today, since companies will want to avoid the double-sanction of monetary fines and “naming and shaming” of the NSE.

Companies that have submitted their 2013 results included Unilever Nigeria, FCMB Group, Nigeria Aviation Handling Company (Nahco), Julius Berger Nigeria, Livestock Feeds, United Bank for Africa (UBA), First Aluminium Nigeria, Cement Company of Northern Nigeria, Sterling Bank, Dangote Cement, GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Nigeria, Berger Paints, Lafarge Cement Wapco Nigeria, Cadbury Nigeria, Zenith Bank, Transnational Corporation of Nigeria (Transcorp), Guaranty Trust Bank, Nestle Nigeria, Forte Oil and Africa Prudential Registrars among others.

Eguma: The results will come soon

Dolphins manager, Stanley Eguma insists the club will fight back from their current precarious position in the Globacom Premier League.

Successive home draws against Enugu Rangers and Giwa FC mean Dolphins have claimed a paltry two points from a possible six from their last two matches but Eguma is not letting his head drop yet.

“Those were games we should have won. We played well but did not have luck. There were also a couple of mistakes from my players in the two games but these things happen in football and we must fight back,” Eguma exclusively told Supersport.com.

It has been a difficult start for Dolphins in the league this term with the Port Harcourt club claiming just one win from their opening six league fixtures.

Wednesday’s result also means that for the first time since the 2010/11 season, Dolphins have now failed to win in two consecutive home matches. Eguma is calling for calm heads among the troop as they look to stem the tide of underwhelming results.

“I will be lying if I said the current situation is ideal but nobody must panic. We have played only six matches and have another 32 still to play. People also forget that our away form has been solid so far because we have only lost one game this season.

“The truth is that these are still early days and if we assess ourselves and correct the mistakes we have seen so far, we can still achieve our target for the season.

“I have spoken to the players already and they have all accepted that we need to up our game. The fans must not lose faith in the team because we failed to win two straight home games. I believe in the players and I am sure the results will soon start coming for us,” he said.

Dolphins are currently in 13th place on the Glo league standings with seven points from six matches. The three-time Glo league champions will next meet Gombe United at the Pantami Stadium on match day seven of the Glo league this weekend.

The West African Examination Council on Wednesday released the full results of 1,543,683 candidates who sat for its May/June 2013 Secondary School Certificate Examination.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the number represents 91.38 per cent of 1,689,188 candidates who registered for the examination.

Eguridu said 889,636 candidates obtained six credits and above, while 1,074,065 others obtained five credits and above.

According to him, the results of 145,505 others, representing 8.62 per cent, were being processed due to some errors.

“These errors are traceable to the candidates as well as their schools in the course of registration or writing the examination.’’

The HNO explained that such errors were being corrected by the council to enable the affected candidates to get their results fully processed and released subsequently.

Eguridu disclosed that the council cancelled the result of 2,176 candidates.

He explained that the cancellation was due to multiple entries by the candidates discovered while processing the results.

“In line with the council’s regulation, the entire results of such candidates who have been found guilty of this act had been cancelled, “ he said.

The HNO also said 112,865 results of candidates, representing 6.75 per cent, were withheld due to examination malpractice.

Henry Nwosu: Past results won’t count

Ex-Eagles star, Henry Nwosu has warned that previous records between Nigeria and Mali would count for little when both nations clash in the semi final of 2013 Africa Cup of Nations holding in South Africa today.

After three matches involving both countries at previous AFCON tournaments, Super Eagles remain unbeaten after picking two wins and a draw in those encounters.

At the 2002 AFCON which Mali hosted Nigeria triumphed 1-0 with Yakubu Aiyegbeni solitary goal during the third place match played in Mopti.

Both nations met again two years later in Tunisia in the third place match with the Super Eagles having the upper hands again in Monastir.

Austin Jay Jay Okocha and Peter Osaze Odemwingie accounting for Nigeria’s goals before a certain Abouta halved the scoreline to make 2-1.

Both sides met for the third time in 2008 in Sekondi,Ghana during the group phase. It ended goalless.

But in an interview Nwosu admonished the country’s flag bearer to approach the semi final tie with the same way they did against Cote d’Ivoire if they want to book a place in the Sunday’s grand finale.

Nwosu said:”We have another serious encounter with the Malians. on Wednesday. We need to forget about the euphoria of our victory over Ivory Coast. It is time to get serious.”
