  • Diri: PDP will retain power in Bayelsa

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, on Thursday said that the party will win the November election.

He urged the chieftains to gird their loins ahead of the exercise, saying victory is assured if they work in unity.

He thanked the delegates who elected him at the primary, assuring that he will not disappoint them and the people of the state.

Diri said in a statement by his campaign organisation that the party will soon embark on campaigns in the eight local governments.

He said: “We are humbled and elated by the massive show of solidarity and the sacrifices made by the delegates to ensure that the distinguished Senator emerges victorious in what has gone down as the most competitive governorship primary in the state.

“Our heartfelt gratitude also goes to our amiable leader, His Excellency the Honourable Henry Seriake Dickson, Governor of Bayelsa State for his display of uncommon political leadership and sagacity.

Diri added: “Let us also commend the national leadership of our party and the Governor Darius Ishaku led committee for a job well done, especially for allowing a level playing field.

“We also appreciate PDP leaders and stakeholders, women, youths and Bayelsans for their support, prayers and wise counsel since we began this journey to move our state to greater heights.

We acknowledge the efforts of other aspirants who gave their best shot for the ticket. Our victory is a collective one so we enjoin them as true party men to stand with us as we move closer to make this project a reality.

“In the days ahead, we shall storm communities across the eight local government areas to present to our people what we are bringing to the table in the next four years.

“It is going to be an interesting voyage as we intend to use the opportunity to discuss facts on competence, prosperity of our people and stable governance as a whole.”

  • Saraki: APC will retain power in Kwara

Saraki: APC will retain power in Kwara

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is enlarging its coast in Kwara State. At the recent rally of the party in Ilorin, the state capital, the former governor, Senator Bukola Saraki, reiterated the party’s determination to retain power in the Northcentral state. ADEKUNLE JIMOH reports.

IT was in unusual home coming for the home boy. A huge crowd of brooms waving women and men, singing and screaming.

Senator Bukola Saraki, the former governor of Kwara State, savoured it all that sunny day in Ilorin, the state capital.

Saraki was returning from the All Progressives Congress (APC) conference held in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. Few days earlier, President Goodluck Jonathan was in the state to boost the morale of dispirited Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains, who were downcast, following the defection of many members from the party to the APC. Jonathan and other PDP leaders fired salvos at the APC family, predicting doom for it at the next election.

However, the crowd that welcomed Saraki replied the missiles. They sang anti-Federal Government songs. They also reiterated their confidence in Saraki’s leadership.

The APC faithful had thronged the Ilorin Airport as early as 8am, waiting patiently for their leader, who alighted from the aircraft around 2p.m.

Saraki was received by his associates, including the APC chairman, Alhaji Ishola Balogun-Fulani, the secretary, Yemi Afolalyan, former PDP Chairman, Yusuf Ayedun, some commissioners and heads of boards and parastatals.

Traditional rulers from the Ilorin Emirate also turned up to receive Saraki, whose illustrious father, the late Dr. Olusola “Oloye” Saraki, was the Waziri of the Emirate. They were led by the Emir of Ilorin’s spokesman, the Magaji Nda of Ilorin, Alhaji Mohammed Salihu Woru.

Woru paid tribute to Saraki, saying that he is a good leader. He also reiterated the support of the royal family and chiefs for his political leadership.

It was a carnival-like rally. The party train took off from the airport, rolling into major streets, including the popular Gari Alimi Roundabout and Agaka, before stopping at the palace of the Emir, Alhaji Kolapo Gambari. For almost two hours, traffic crawled on the ever – busy Ilorin-Ogbomoso Expressway.

APC members were dancing and waving their brooms. In fact, they swarmed Saraki, who had to abandon his vehicle on the road and joined the faithful in trekking through the long Garin-Alimi road before he entered his car again. Ordinarily, it was a journey of 20 minutes. But, the crowd spent almost two hours from the airport to the palace.

Saraki was sweating and smiling, was apparently, overwhelmed by the warm reception.

He saluted the resilience of the crowd and their affection for the APC. He said that the development translated into the eclipse of the PDP in Kwara, adding that the opposition will be too weak to confront the APC in future elections.

The party leader said that the huge crowd was a signal that the APC has become a party to beat. He added: ”I think it was a reaction to the PDP rally and the kind of insinuations that were being made after.

“People just wanted to show and let Nigerians know that whatever they saw before is nothing; that this is where the structure is.

“It was not a challenge, but a message; to say this is where the people of Kwara are, these are the people we associate with; it was really a clear message.”

He condemned those he described as “bill board politicians.” He said they were plotting the disintegration of the state, adding that the plot will fail.

“Today, Kwarans have shown that we have come too far to be disintegrated by nocturnal politicians, who come at the eve of election to rob us of our mandate; Kwarans have shown that, irrespective of the external aggression and gang-up to disharmonise us, we cannot be broken.

’’In the history of my usual periodic visit to Kwara, apparently today’s arrival was extravagantly welcoming. Kwarans came together en masse at the airport. I’m sincerely humbled, happy and confident of your support.

“Importantly, I’m very glad to have walked the roads together on our feet from the airport down to the Emir’s palace. This is the best way I can pass the weekend with my people; truly we are united, because you all turned out voluntarily from your various homes. I’m deeply honoured.

“Importantly, I’m very glad to have walked the roads together on our feet from the airport down to the Emir’s palace. This is the best way I can pass the weekend with my people; truly we are united, because you all turned out voluntarily from your various homes.”

Saraki dismissed the PDP rally as “insignificant.” He said that the President failed to make any pronouncement on the Federal Government’s projects in the state, which he said, are non-existent. He said that he and his supporters had sought for refuge in the APC in a bid to be liberated from the “ineptitude” of the PDP.

Saraki, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Environment, also assured Kwarans of a better future. He said: ‘The Kwara of our dream is possible”. of his focus towards achieving the Kwara of our dream.

Saraki added: ’’Let us continue to support the Kwara State government and sensitise everyone to join the change train, if they are yet to.”

  • ‘PDP desperate to retain power’

    ‘PDP desperate to retain power’

Former Information Minister Prince Tony Momoh has said the People Democratic Party (PDP) will be desperate to hold on to power, following the defection of the aggrived governors tothe All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said the party would use everything within its reach to ensure it holds on to power.

He said: “The consequence of this is that the PDP is going to be more desperate. PDP is going to fight like a bull in the China shop. It is going to be the spoiler. This is because nobody willingly hands over power. Power is taken.

“If any person or group thinks that power is going to be willingly relinquished, they are mistaken. The struggle for change is a hard battle; this must be fought constitutionally and legally,” Momoh said.

The APC chieftain maintained that plans to return power to the people was on course. “When we came up with the merger idea, people said merger was impossible. Today, we have merger and everything is on course.

“We didn’t just think of the splinter group then. the whole idea was muted, but right now, we have spread out to bring together all the progressives.

“So, the PDP, which is a conservative party, has a lot of splintering groups. We have resolved to pull out the progressives among them into APC.”

Momoh added that the PDP had its ways in the country by manipulating elections, sustaining corruption and entrenching fraud in the system.

He noted that although the PDP would become the opposition party in, it never envisaged it would be soon.

“So, this is just the beginning of getting PDP out. We felt that PDP will be in the opposition by 2015 but we did not know it will be so soon.”

He said those who feels that the union is that of strange bed fellows should have a rethink because the party manifesto has clearly defined the mode of relationship.

“I heard some people saying that people who are in APC are not homogeneous, in order word there is no compatibility. They forget that there is a document that everybody in APC must accept and that is manifesto of the party.

“We are not just interested in taking power but interested in giving to Nigerians what democracy as a system of government ought to have offered them in the area of freedom.

“What social justice ought to have offered them infrastructure development which PDP flagrantly ignored since it came to power in 1999,” he added.

  • Sokoto 2015: Can PDP retain power?

Sokoto 2015: Can PDP retain power?

In Sokoto State, the 2015 governorship will be a straight fight between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), writes ADAMU SULEIMAN.

The 2015 governeorship contest in Sokoto State will be a tough battle. The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), despite its internal crisis, is working assiduously to remain in power. But observers contend that, unless the party puts its house in order, it is doomed.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is waxing strong in the Caliphate. Unlike the ruling party, the opposition is united. There are discordant tunes within the PDP. Governor Aliyu Wamakko, who returned from an overseas trip last week to a rousing reception, used the opportunity to blast the leadership of the party.

He particularly singled out the national chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, accussing him of running the party in a manner that has done more harm to it than good. At the reception was the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal. The party had two weeks ago suspended the governor for alleged insurbordination.

Analysts say Wamakko’s suspension was not as a result of any insurbordiation but the fact that “Abuja” is uncomfortable with the “perceived plans” by Wamakko to instal in 2015 a candidate who is not anointed by “Abuja.”

Besides, many governorship aspirant in the state are anti-Abuja.

Already, there are stong indications within and outside the state that four front runners in the race for the Government House in the PDP have emerged. Others are still “consulting.” Among the leading contenders is Tambuwal; there is also the incumbent Deputy Governor, Alhaji Mukhtari Shagari; the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Farouk Yabo.

Also in contention are the former Minister of Sports, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman, and Senator Abubakar Gada. The two had tested their popularity in 2011 against Governor Wamakko at the primaries, but lost to him. It is being rumoured that they are strategising to launch their bid, once again, to clinch the party’s ticket for the plum job.

Within the PDP, Tambuwal is said to be the front runner. His popularity has soared, since the historic election that produced him as the Speaker. The PDP machinery was arrayed against him in that contest, but he pulled through in a manner that left the PDP bigwigs in the gallery, who had gone to witness the election, dumbfounded.

Besides, his leadership style has earned him more respect and he is a major source of worry to the powers that be in Abuja. His rating soared when former Military President, Ibrahim Babangida called on him to seek “higher office” on the understanding that he has performed creditably. Moreover, Tambuwal has established a rare relationship with the opposition party members, a style that has infuriated the leadership of the PDP. In fact, it has earned him the rather derogatory appelation of “Opposition Speaker.” Within the House, he is at home with all and sundry, except, perhaps, the die-hard supporters of the establishment.

Shagari, a former Minister of Water Resources and hardcore loyalist of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, comes across as a very loyal deputy to Wamakko. He is adjudged by analysts to be politically mature to step into the shoes of his boss. He has gone through the test of the game and may be rewarded for his patience and loyalty. The sacrifice he made could earn him the ticket.

Even though Yabo is not too old in the game, he is an enterprising and highly resourceful politican. He is also very humble and often attracts remarkable attention at political gatherings across the state. He is nicknamed the “man of the people’’. This, analysts say, could surprisingly smoothen his political ambition at any given opportunity.

But the PDP will face a big challenge from the mega party in the making, the APC. It is a merger of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (UPGA).

The opposition is enjoying a huge popularity.

The APC is determined to take the state from the PDP. The ANPP governorship candidate in 2012, Alhaji Yusha’u Ahmad, recently described the APC as the political messiah for Nigerians.

‘’The coming of the APC is a good omen for Nigeria and its citizens. The party is a reflection of true democracy, which we need now, to free the masses from the shackles of poverty and maladministration, which the PDP government has subjected them to in the last 14 years,” he said.

Ahmad said the clamour for change can no longer be neglected, and to meet the yearnings of the peoples, the leaders of the opposition decided to come together to provide the needed alternative, which is the APC.

‘’There is wide agitation for change by the people of Sokoto State and Nigerians, and APC is set to build the needed confidence in the electorate, ahead of the next general elections, ’’ he said

Ahmad said Nigeria required leaders with integrity, foresight, vision and commitment that can religiously pursue relevant policies for the benefit of the citizenry, adding that ‘’ this is what APC stands for’’.

He maintained that these qualities are lacking in this current leadership. According to him, the masses need to be sensitised to their fundamental rights, which they ought to protect by electing credible candidates of their choice.

His words: “There is absolute need to change the leadership and direction in the state and in the country.’’

Ahmad accused the PDP government of turning the state to a ‘’beggar spot where basic demands of the majority of people cannot be addressed by the ruling PDP in the state”.

Wamakko has warned politicians to allow his administration a breathing space to pursue his programmes, adding that campaigns in any form or guise will constitute a distratcion for his administration.

He urged all the aspirants to allow him enough space to channel resources and energies to the empowerment of the youth through job creation, poverty reduction and self reliant activities to give them a sense of belonging and prepare them as tomorrow’s leaders.
