  • ‘Deeper Life retreat promises new dawn’

The General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor William Folorunsho Kumuyi, has said this year’s Easter retreat promises a new era of great blessings.

The retreat begins today all over the world. It will end on Easter Sunday.

Announcing the holding of the retreat through satellite on Monday, Pastor Kumuyi urged members to attend the three- day annual event, which promises manifold spiritual and physical blessings.

He enjoined them never to permit anything, however desirable, to hinder them from receiving what God would do in their lives.

Pastor Kumuyi said the retreat offers an opportunity for getting even with God and preparing every heaven-bound saint to keenly await the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

He advised members to invite those outside the fold of God’s kingdom to attend, saying God’s blessings await those who heed His entreaty to return to Him in penitence and repentance.

The Easter retreat is an annual programme of the church. It holds in all local governments of the country, in nearly 50 African countries and the rest of the world. The theme of this year’s retreat is: “Heirs of His Kingdom”.

Pastor Kumuyi will minister from the Deeper Life Conference Centre, Km 42, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The messages and ministrations will be broadcast by satellite to other retreat venues in Nigeria and abroad.

This year’s retreat will feature on kingdom perspectives, teachings on salvation from sin, righteousness of life, living to please God at all times, and serving God whole heartedly.

FG shifts SGF’s retreat for SSGs

The Federal Government on Friday announced indefinite postponement of the 2017 annual retreat proposed for the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) with Secretaries to State Governments.

A statement by the Director (Press) in the Office of the SGF, Bolaji Adebiyi, however did not give any reason for the postponement.

The statement titled “Retreat of SGF with SSGs postponed” reads: “The annual retreat of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation with Secretaries to State Governments scheduled to hold in Yola, Adamawa State, from April 23 to 25, 2017 has been postponed.

  • Takeaways from Kano APC retreat

The recently held Sokoto retreat of the Kano chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was unique in so many ways. Unlike previous retreats which was the exclusive preserve of top technocrats and government officials in the state, this particular one was all inclusive as it accommodated grassroots politicians from across board.

The retreat which was the first of its kind which took place at Giginya Coral Hotel, Sokoto from October 27-29, was attended by over 600 party officials across the 44 local councils of Kano State.

Among dignitaries in attendance were  Kano State governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his Sokoto State counterpart, Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tambuwal who hosted the historic event, the national chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie- Oyegun as well as the party executive members from Kano state led by its Chairman Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas,

The Kano State deputy governor, Professor Hafiz Abubakar, members of the Kano State and National Assembly as well as other party officials from the ward, Local Government and the state levels were also on ground to grace the retreat aimed at institutionalising capacity-building through effective management of party administration.

Other party dignitaries who graced the event were the vice chairman North-west, the vice chairman South-south, Prince Hillard Eta, Alh. Kawu Sumaila, the Senior Special Adviser to President on National Assembly Matters, the National Organizing Secretary of the party, Mr Osita Izunaso, the National Women leader, Hajia Ramatu Tijjani, and the party Youth Leader, Ibrahim Dasuki Jalo-Waziri among others.

In all, a total of twelve (12) papers were presented by reputable academics and prominent APC party leaders. Their presentations covered areas such as party leadership, the role of political party in policy making, duties and responsibilities of party officials, internal and external party communication networks, and political party financing, political party leadership in economic recession and the role of political party in balancing between policies and aspirations of the electorate.

After exposing participants to the art of modern political party management skills, they were resolute on the need to depart from the past way of doing things with the resolve to privately finance the construction of the proposed Kano APC State Secretariat complex building through the party’s Board of Trustees (BOT).

One of the most telling aspect of the event was the remarks by Odigie-Oyegun who expressed his deep gratitude to the state chapter of the party for the noble initiative even as he called on party officials at all levels to support the policies of the federal government and abide by the constitution of the party.

A much more striking lesson from the retreat came from its convener, His Excellency Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who stated in unambiguous terms the need to bring the diverse party officials of the APC and its various organs together to reflect on the activities of the party with a view to developing the skills of participants in the management of the affairs of the party.

For Ganduje, an exponent of internal democracy, it will be disgraceful and unacceptable for party officials to keep running cap in hand to collect handouts to be able to move around the country to make ends meet.

At the end of the two days event, decisions were taken that could impact positively on the party, Kano State and Nigeria as a whole.

Participants were unanimous in their support for President Buhari’s resolve to tackle the problems of insecurity, corruption and the economic downturn besetting the polity just as they overwhelmingly passed a vote of confidence on Ganduje as the leader of the party and reiterated their confidence on the existing party leadership under Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas.

A huge takeaway from the retreat was the resolve to prevent abuse of executive, legislative and public offices through greater accountability, transparency in the scheme of affairs in the corridors of power.

In the Kano chapter of the party just like in other states of the federation, there are bound to be disagreements within the ranks of the party and participants were conscious of that fact during the retreat. This was why the members hammered on the need by party officials to always maintain harmonious relationship with the government in the state to continue to be responsive to popular demands.

Conscious of the need to sustain the 100 percentiles winning streak of the party in Kano, the participants also stressed that political party discipline should be kept at the high and lowest levels of the party’s structure in order to promote unity and preserve loyalty among its members, aside the fact that party officials at all levels should be familiar with the party’s constitution and comply with its provisions in their conduct of party activities.

The retreat observed the need to increase the capacity of political party officials to meet the challenges of managing political party affairs in a state with high population across the 44 Local Government Areas and 484 wards, maintain a disciplined and cohesive party organization with strict adherence to internal democracy.

It stressed the need to sensitize members of the APC in the state to adhere to the party’s constitution in their daily affairs, consolidate inclusiveness between the party officials and the chief executive of the state on the one hand, as well as between the party members and their officials on the other hand for the smooth running of the state and party and the need for regular interaction between the government and the people of Kano State.

In addition, it was resolved that political party officials should foster both horizontal and vertical communication networks among members and party’s organization at various levels to ensure effective internal democracy. It was further resolved that the party should undertake continuous party registration of members, hold regular meetings of the executives with members and keep records of all its activities as well as develop mechanisms of safeguarding its integrity uniqueness, coherence and prudence in its use of resources.

Participants underscored the role of finance in strengthening the party and resolved to see fund raising as a critical activity in beefing up the resources of the local chapter for effective democracy. Furthermore, it was resolved that the party should pay attention to the development of a strategic plan with clear vision and mission to guide its activities and mobilizational capacities and that the party should maintain its cordial relationship with state and national legislative members .

The need by the party to understand the role that research, documentation and publication plays as a resource base for party activities was also underscored by participants during the retreat. For better understanding of the work of political party officers, it was agreed that there was the need to translate the  constitution of the APC into Hausa language just as women leaders at all levels of party structure need to be engaged in  the mobilization drive of the party in order to promote women participation and support.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, said that President Muhammadu Buhari will deliver the keynote address during the formal opening session on Monday morning.

Shittu will deliver the keynote address on the occasion.

Barrister Shittu, in his avowed determination to reposition the Communications Sector in tandem with the Change Agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari, since assumption of duties as Minister of Communications, had embarked on various inquisitions and fact-finding exercises, the result of which culminated in the forthcoming retreat.

It was discovered that considerable efforts made in the past to mainstream ICT into vital aspects of life in the country, have unfortunately been undermined by the lack of an integrated framework for utilisation of ICT for socio-economic development.

In the ensuing scenario, the Minister of Communications had to re-examine the status quo ante in order to formulate new strategies for doing things differently so as to fast track the realization of the vision of a new Nigeria, hence the all-inclusive retreat.

Towards this end, the 2016 Communications Sector Retreat was designed to achieve among others: Define a Strategic Roadmap for Government on ICT; Provide a Common Platform for Sector Stakeholders to Share Common Vision for ICT development in Nigeria and to form a precursor for the Minister to unveil his vision for the ICT sector that will be beneficial to all.

The fulcrum of the Minister’s new initiative is job creation, revenue generation, efficient service delivery and infrastructural development.

Some of the technical papers expected to be delivered by seasoned Nigerians and a couple of foreign technical experts include ICT Local Content and Innovation for Employment Generation; Accelerating Wealth and Job Creation in Nigeria through ICT Skills and Capacity Development; Economic Diversification: Increasing Government Revenue from the ICT Sector and Repositioning NIPOST for Enhanced Revenue Generation and Efficient Service Delivery.

Others are Creating Enabling Environment for ICT Development; Enhancing Policy Framework for Accelerated ICT Infrastructure Development and Leveraging on the e-Government Master Plan for Efficient, Effective and Transparent Governance.

The two-day retreat is expected to draw over 300 industry stakeholders and policy makers to the ancient City of Ibadan, the first of its kind in the history of the Ministry.

  • Our Girls; Selfless ministers: RETREAT over, let the ADVANCE begin

Our Girls; Selfless ministers: RETREAT over, let the ADVANCE begin

Our Girls are still missing since April 15, 2014. May God comfort their families.

Nigeria’s inability to pay ministers and ‘jobs for the gang’ Personal Assistants (Pas) and Special Assistants (SAs), is a signal for President Buhari to restore ‘The Honour Of Selfless Ministerial Service’. But Ministerial corruption is chronic, endemic – since 1960, when it was 10%; the most telling corruption skit was the 1960s minister’s office with a contractor offering a wallet ‘Minister, I found your wallet on the floor with £5,000’. The offended minister responded ‘No, my wallet has £10,000 in it’. The contractor bent down, stuffed in more notes and sat up. ‘My mistake! It has £10,000.’ The minister replied. ‘Aha, Good arithmetic, that is MY wallet, thanks’. Unfounded ‘malicious’ rumour is that the family 50 years later is still fighting over the late minister’s estate. Then ministers read West Africa and Time magazine adverts tempting them to open ‘Secret Bank Accounts’ in Switzerland and elsewhere which I remember from my General Paper ‘A’ Level days in St Gregory’s College. The invitation led them to put ‘our stolen money’ in those banks and ‘that our money’ is today lost and it has enriched foreign bankers who received the Daily Times obituary pages to identify any newly dead Nigerian clients to reduce or cancel secret accounts before family, fronts, friends or contacts came for the funds. We are told to be grateful to thieving ministers who ‘kindly’ kept and spent our stolen money in Nigeria. They are more patriotic. No! Are we mad? A thief is a thief regardless of ‘local content’ or international deposits.

Then minister and contractor corruption was 10% and excuse for an epidemic of coups by successively worse corrupt military regimes. That new corruption driven by ministers, contractors and ruling political parties has been estimated at 40-70% per contract, reaching 100% with zero contract executed i.e. no bridge built, no road refurbished, no drugs, no potholes filled or anti-crime equipment not bought for the empty forensic laboratory. ‘Corruption, Incompetence, Negligence, Selfishness’, (CINS), are the leading cause of Millennium Development Goals (MDG) development delays leading, for example, to the growth of millions of potholes, easily filled by government, as witnessed by the Ogun State pothole-filling intervention on jinxed Lagos-Ibadan road.

Nigerians seeking ‘CHANGE’ must ask why states, not federal, do not pay for their political proxies like ministers, senators and representatives to go and stay in Abuja. The Federal Government may offer a small additional stipend. That would change the criminally abused ‘State-Federal Equation’. Yes, government has cheated, robbed, misled, and been abusive with criminal behaviour towards governance and citizens. Paradoxically we and the media flock to take and report advice from the ‘dark reputation’ actors from those disgraced governments.

To recover, we require President Buhari to ‘liberate states from issues from the ‘unitary military regimes’ like Federal Revenue Allocation Formula and the Federal vs. State/LGA inter-party war. This war includes conflicting policies, laws and taxes crippling state development of roads, waterways and railways. Nigeria don suffer O’ from malevolent rulers, military and political! ‘Federal’ might was deployed by ‘federal’ ministers (sent from states) to frustrate and destroy development projects in non-ruling party states. That is a heinous crime of a minister against his own state. How else do we explain the mental and physical poverty from 50 years of minister-led misapplied policies resulted in a shame-faced Nigeria with 3-4,000 not 100,000Mw electricity, 14-17million housing deficit, 70milion without water, 90+m without toilets or sanitation, hardly 50million with usable education and many millions of easily-filled potholes and an Okada epidemic, unrecognized by most governments which is still bringing daily danger and distress, death and emotional and financial disaster to 100+ millions under the disguise of ‘poverty alleviation’.

The Okada epidemic is an unacceptable Nigerian and inter-ministerial disaster. Look at the statistics. It is a major criminal act of governance. The deaths would have been averted if government had a Public Enquiry, Stakeholders’ Forum and ‘Impact Assessment’ and FRSC and Health Ministry input before the motorcycle murder and mayhem. Every Nigerian has witnessed one Okada crash; half of the population knows an Okada victim story. Every clinic has received at least one Okada crash victim. Every cemetery has Okada victims. We justifiably fear Ebola but worse is facilitated by government daily with no sanitation- typhoid. The OKADA IS ALSO A VIRUS, a pollution menace to the environment, to the economy as a ridiculous mono-transport system when mass-transit is the economical norm worldwide and to the emotional and financial fabric of families torn by medical care costs and loss of millions of breadwinners. Over 80% of long term beds and entire wards are overflowing with spinal, head/brain and limb injuries and amputations of Okada victims and still no ‘cure’ apart from a few bans, crash helmet checks and tri-wheel-motorcycle.

‘My people die for lack of Life skill/Health knowledge’.  Nigeria ignores the expensive Epidemic ‘Life skill/ Health Ignorance’ and the cheap answer ‘Media Life skill/Health Education’. President Buhari’s ‘CHANGE’ must demand synergy from ministers and not conflict and rivalry. For example the ministers of health, education and information should link with state ministries to saturate the media with 21st century advertising LIFE SKILL/HEALTH MESSAGES as a strategy to improve lives.

Congratulations, ministers. ‘The RETREAT is over. Let the ADVANCE begin. Pray and work that you will still be worthy of our congratulations when you leave office! Listen to and learn from everyone.

  • Peter Obafemi on retreat

One individual who would not likely be thrilled by the transient nature of life is the owner of the defunct Ritetime Airways, Peter Obafemi. Before his good luck suddenly turned ill, the fine looking businessman enjoyed a lot of prominence as he mixed freely with notables around the world. He is now faced with the reality of the saying that whatever goes up must come down. The once ubiquitous businessman has faded off the social radar.

The last that was heard of him was based on a series of unfortunate occurrences. Soon after his first marriage to his America-based wife hit the rocks, Obafemi found love again with lovely Lolade Iruka. But few months after they welcomed their baby boy, his second marriage crumbled as well. And while he was still smarting from heartbreak, he lost the Peoples Democratic Party’s primary election in Ekiti State to Governor Ayo Fayose, causing his political career to nose-dive.

Dampened perhaps by the series of misfortunes, he has embraced isolation to probably fathom the best way to launch a comeback.

  • Retreat for exco members

The Ekiti State government will hold a two-day retreat for members of the executive council, permanent secretaries.

A statement by the Permanent Secretary, General Administration, Governor’s Office, Sunday Adebayo, on behalf of the Head of Service, Olugbenga Faseluka, said the retreat begins today at Ikogosi Warm Spring Resort, Ikogosi-Ekiti.

The retreat, according to the Head of Service, is to re-equip the state’s political and bureaucratic leadership with more knowledge.

Faseluka said the retreat would provide a solid base for cooperation and deepen mutual collaboration between chief executives and accounting officers for effective governance and efficient service delivery.
