  • No plan to probe Obasanjo’s tenure, says Jonathan

Contrary to speculations of a rift between  former President Olusegun Obasanjo and President Goodluck Jonathan, the Presidency on Saturday  maintained that there is no plan to probe Obasanjo’s tenure.

A statement yesterday by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati said that the President is more concerned with socio-economic development and ensuring peace and security in the country.

Despite  shunning  recent official engagements of the federal  government, the Presidency said it has the greatest respect for Obasanjo’s contributions to national growth and development during his tenure.

The statement reads: “The Presidency is constrained to state once again that there is no truth whatsoever to rehashed reports in the media today that President Goodluck Jonathan intends to order a probe of the Obasanjo Administration because of the former President’s “constant” criticisms of the Federal Government.”

“President Jonathan remains fully focused on the urgent tasks of assuring peace, security and stability across the country to create the right conditions for rapid socio-economic development and will not be distracted from this objective by futile attempts to drive a wedge between him and other respected elders and leaders of his party.”

“The President has nothing but the greatest respect for Chief Obasanjo’s very notable contributions to national growth and development over many years and far from taking offense or seeking retaliation, will always welcome objective criticism and advice from the very highly-regarded elder statesman.”

President Jonathan, the statement said, regards his Administration as a continuation of the unbroken chain of PDP-led governments started by Chief Obasanjo in 1999.

“Rather than order a pointless probe of his predecessors, he will continue to do his utmost best to build on the solid foundations for national progress laid under previous PDP administrations.”

“Speculations and suggestions of an impending probe of the Obasanjo Administration by President Jonathan are therefore nonsensical and should be dismissed by all right-thinking Nigerians as the product of the fertile imagination of mischievous political jobbers.” It stated

  • Reuben Abati, I beg to disagree

In a treatise friday on the LEADERSHIP newspaper saga, Reuben Abati, the presidential spokesperson, laboured on to justify the police arrest and detention of the journalists, stating that nobody is above the law. To that extent, l agree with him that nobody is above the law. However, for him to try to criminalise an otherwise civil matter, to say the least, is quite preposterous. Abati said what was published was capable of leading to a civil unrest. Really? That the presidency is allegedly trying to undermine the opposition political parties can lead to a break down of law and order? What is politics if not to undermine your opponents?

Perhaps l should go into memory lane. Late 1975, when General Murtala Mohammed was the Head of State, a journalist, Mr Ohanbamu, who owned a magazine, published in his magazine that Murtala was corrupt. Typical of a military dictator, one would have expected Murtala to arrest and lock up Ohanbamu without trial. Rather, Murtala decided to sue Ohanbamu for defamation, insisting that he wanted to enter the witness box to defend himself because he felt what was published about him was not true. Ohanbamu later found out that what he published was false, and he apologized to the Head of State. That was the height of Statesmanship, maturity and decency on the part of Murtala Mohammed, not like the sordid show of power that we just witnessed on the LEADERSHIP saga.

In September 2004, the INSIDER magazine published a cover story title :”Condemn Biafra Now, no says Ohaneze.” The story reported that the government was mounting pressure on the pan-Igbo group, Ohaneze to denounce the MASSOP. Typical of someone inebriated with power, then president Obasanjo let his goons loose, swooped on the magazine, turning the place upside down and literally sealing up the place.

In its edition of September 20, 2004, TELL interviewed the Chairman of the Editorial Board of Guardian, Reuben Abati on the development and l quote-” Abati takes a more profound look at the development. According to him, the assault on INSIDER WEEKLY magazine represents an attempt to close the space for free expression in Nigeria. He argues that the SSS action was a gross violation of due process”. How time flies.

I ask Reuben, what of our president who misinformed the whole country after the October 1 bombing, that he knew who the bombers were , even after MEND had claimed responsibility? Was that misleading information not splashed on all newspapers? Was Raymond Dopkesi, then Director-General of Babangida campaign, not mischievously arrested to get at Babangida? Has the president apologized for this faux pas? And has the government apologized to Dokpesi, even after Henry Okah has been convicted?

I subscribe to the fact that press freedom comes with it, its responsibility. However, if anyone feels aggrieved about anything published in the media, the person has the right to write a rejoinder or send a complaint to the Nigerian press council, created by the act of parliament or institute defamation suit like late Murtala Mohammed did. Making allusions to the Levenson panel in UK defeats his argument. It was set up following the phone hacking scandal by the NEWS OF THE WORLD, which was a criminal action. So, the fact the some journalists were questioned in the scandal bears no relevance in the present circumstance. It further strengthens my argument that if the government feels sufficiently aggrieved, it should have reported to the Nigerian Press Council instead of resorting to police harassment, which has never worked in this country.

I find it strange that the police are asking for the source of the information of the journalists and Abati is gloating that the police are doing their job! I can’t believe this. Even a cub reporter knows that a strong, cardinal principle in journalism is the protection of your source of information, even at the point of death. In the case of British Steel Corporation v. Grenada Television(1981) 1 AER 417, inimitable Lord Denning held on the issue of disclosure of information:

“Investigative journalism has proved itself as a valuable adjunct of the freedom of the press, notably in Watergate exposure in the united States and the Poulson exposure in this country. It should not be unduly hampered or restricted by the law. Much of the information gathered by the press has been imparted by the informant in confidence. He is guilty of a breach of confidence in telling it to the press. But this is not the reason why his name should be disclosed. Otherwise, much information that ought to be made public will never be made known. Likewise with documents. They may infringe on copyright. But that is no reason for compelling their disclosure, if by so doing it would mean disclosing the name of the informant”. I rest my case.

Jonathan orders security to find perpetrators of Mubi massacre

President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered security agencies in the country to fish out the perpetrators of independence day massacre in Mubi, Adamawa state.

Besides, the president also ordered for full investigation into the killing with the aim of bringing the perpetrators to book.

The directive was issued after the Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, briefed Federal Executive Council (FEC) on the killings which has continued to elicit strong condemnation from the general public.

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, President Jonathan disclosed this to newsmen on Wednesday.

“The President has directed Securuty agencies to investigate the matter and get to the root because this kind of incidence, where people are called out and shot is really shocking.

“He directed that no stone should be left unturned in the bid by the law enforcement agencies to ensure that perpetrators of the mayhem are brought to book”.

  • Jonathan leads delegation to UN Assembly

Jonathan leads delegation to UN Assembly

President Goodluck Jonathan will on Sunday lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 67th General Assembly of the UN in New York.

A statement from the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati Saturday stated that theme of the Assembly would be on peaceful resolution of international disputes.

Abati said that the President of the 67th Assembly, Mr Vuk Jeremic of Serbia had announced the theme as “bringing about adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations by peaceful means.’’

Abati recalled that the theme had been endorsed by Jonathan in his statement to the 66th General Assembly last year.

He said that Jonathan had in his 2011 address to the General Assembly and called on the international community to muster the political will to promote preventive diplomacy for the peaceful resolution of international disputes through mediation.

Jonathan had declared to the Assembly in 2011:

“For too long, the international community has focused too little attention on mediation and preventive diplomacy and far too much effort and resources on military aspects of peace and security.

“Yet measures to address the root cause of conflict, including dialogue and mediation, can be far more effective as means to achieving sustainable peace and stability.

“As I see it, our goal should always be to present the peaceful alternative as a less costly and effective way of achieving political and social objectives.

“By focusing on mediation as a tool for conflict prevention, we would be able to address the real triggers of conflict, without which we cannot achieve sustainable solutions.’’

The president’s delegation, which will depart for New York on Sunday, includes governors Isa Yuguda of Bauchi, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, Sen. Philip Aduda, Hon. Isa Mohammed, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Olugbenga Ashiru.

Others are Ministers of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Allison- Madueke, Trade and Investment, Dr Olusegun Aganga and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke.

“In addition to participating in the 67th Session of the General Assembly, the President is scheduled to meet with other world leaders including the Presidents of China, France, South Korea, Brazil, Bulgaria, Finland and Switzerland in New York,’’ Abati said.

He said that Jonathan would also deliver a statement to the High-Level Meeting on the Rule of Law at the UN Headquarters.

The president, according to Abati, will join the Prime Minister of Norway, Mr Jens Stoltenberg in presenting a report to the UN Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki Moon.

Jonathan and Stoltenberg currently serve as co-Chairpersons of the UN Commission on Life-Saving Commodities for Women and Children.

Abati said that the president would attend a High-Level meeting on the Nigerian Economy and meet with the chairman and top executives of the global oil giant, Exxon-Mobil.

The president will also attend the Secretary-General’s High-Level event on the eradication of polio and a reception to be hosted by U.S. President Barack Obama. (NAN)
