  • Old girls hold reunion 25 years after

All roads would lead to Rodizzo Restaurant, GRA, Ikeja on October 31, as the 1990 set of the Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC), Benin City will be coming together to celebrate its 25th reunion in grand style.

It will be the first integrated reunion in Nigeria for the old students since leaving the unity school 25 years ago.

The idea of a get-together was conceived on Whatsapp, a social networking platform, by the Lagos chapter, which took advantage of the forum created on July 21 to enable the class bond and share ideas. Some of the old students told The Nation about their excitement in reconnecting with their friends whom they last saw at the school’s premises.

Several activities have been lined up to make the occasion a memorable one which includes a Karaoke session where each old girl is expected to sing a school song.

“We really are excited about this reunion because we’re going to know each other 25 years later. The things we probably missed when we met each other during our school days at Fedeben,” one of the old students said.

The gathering would offer the women an opportunity to rub minds, celebrate, network and discuss ways of assisting their alma matter.

A grand reunion for the entire set, regardless of location, is being planned for next October in Dubai.

  • Mancini seeks Richards reunion

    Mancini seeks Richards reunion

Inter Milan have started talks with Fiorentina about a potential deal for Micah Richards.

The 26-year-old is on loan from Manchester City and played for the Premier League champions in the Community Shield against Arsenal.

The Italians have been checking to see if this will count as a competitive match, so it potentially could scupper the deal under FIFA’s three club rule.

Richards was a 76th minute substitute in that game, replacing Antonio Kolarov.

Inter are languishing in tenth in Serie A under manager Roberto Mancini, who returned for his second tenure as manager in November.

And Mancini knows all about Richards’ capabilities having managed him at Manchester City.

The defender has impressed during his 11 appearances for La Viola.

  • Reunion of a ‘unique set’

The Faculty of Law ‘Class 83’ of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has held its 7th Reunion at Chida International Hotel in Abuja. TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO reports.

It was two days of fun and rekindling of fond memories of their alma mater.

Between March 14 and 15, the University of Lagos (Unilag) Faculty of Law ‘Class 83’ gathered at the Chida International Hotel in Abuja to celebrate its 7th Reunion.

For those who passed through the Unilag Faculty of Law in the 80s, there is something striking about ‘Class 1980-83’. It is a set of achievers. Although they left school over 31 years ago, they always showcase the faculty that brought out the best in them.

For instance, the ‘Unique Set,’ as they are referred to, has produced eight Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), 17 judges, several professors and lawyers of repute. Also on the list are Generals in the Nigerian Army, legislators, senators, business men and women and those in the Diaspora who have distinguished themselves.

Initiated seven years ago, the essence of the Reunion, is to bond with fellow classmates and their families, network and render assistance and support to one another and their beloved alma mater. The two-day event kicked off on March 14 with a dinner. On March 15, there was a Business Session where issues affecting members and their alma mater were discussed. The train moved to Sen. Effiong Bob’s palatial home where they were treated to a sumptuous meal. Drinks flowed amid banters.

They returned to Chida International Hotel for dinner where their former lecturers spoke glowing about them.

“This is the most visible set ever produced from the Faculty of Law, UNILAG,” the Dean, Faculty of Law, UNILAG Prof Imran Smith (SAN), said.

Prof Isaac Agbede added: “They are unique and trail blazers. There is no one like you.”

Extolling the members’ virtues, Prof Smith said he was happy to celebrate with the “wonderful set”, adding that coming together like this means celebrating the best university in the country.

“I’m proud to associate with the faculty that has not failed accreditation. The faculty that has the highest number of professors in the university; our students have recorded great height in their endeavours. Out of 15 First Class produced by the Nigerian Law School last year, five of them came from University of Lagos. We are making progress. We thank you for being part of that progress in terms of moral and financial support. We are happy with this set and your achievements,” he said

National President of the Reunion, Justice Adedotun Onibokun, said it was a privilege to be among the achievers.

“Over the years, we have improved on the aims and objectives of this Reunion. We network among ourselves and that has improved especially now with the publication of the directory of members,” Justice Onibokun said.

“This year, we have elevations and promotions. Chief Godwin Obla was made a SAN; Mr Mike Igbokwe (SAN) got the Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators of Nigeria. In our private lives, we are celebrating marriages for our children. This year, we have the largest number of our set from the Diaspora. Seven of our members are based in the United States and five of them were in attendance this year. We have had a very cooperative set since 33 years and it has been so till this day. I thank God for the bond, love despite the fact that we are from diverse areas,” Justice Onibokun said.

Chairman, Board of Trustees and Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, University of Benin, Senator Effiong Bob, was full of praises for his mates for staying together.

Senator Bob said: “Staying together for three years has extended to 33 years. It is heart warming to have in our midst today as usual, our most cherished teachers and mentors, our heroes and role models, who, many years ago, not only volunteered to but passionately and diligently molded us like clay in the hands of the esteem porter and guided us into what we have become today.

“I know the UNILAG must be proud of your products. Who would have believed, when we left the Faculty of Law, of UNILAG about 31 years ago that we will still be standing together? Who would have believed that those little boys and girls, who were hardly in their twenties, will today become professors, judges, respected lawyers, lawmakers, topflight business men and women, respected military officers, politicians, and policy makers? Surely, God Himself has turned us into what we are today and we are grateful”.

According to Senator Bob, the decision to assemble every year is not meant to dine and wine and renew contact with one another, rather it is an opportunity to look back and reappraise where they are coming from to purposefully and fruitfully forge ahead.

Chairman, Local Organising Committee, Justice Baba Yusuf thanked members for ensuring that this year’s reunion is a success. Justice Yusuf said coming together yearly is good but emphasised that their responsibility to their alma mater must not be lost to the merriment of the event.

Retired Supreme Court, Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte said he got to know about the Reunion last year but was thrilled because it was fashioned after American universities.

“There is nothing as good as remembering your alma mater, which brings about remembering your teachers and classmates. UNILAG Law Faculty is unique in the sense that students were free with their lecturers. Then we used to hold tutorials in my sitting room, which showed that UNILAG is a nurturing institution. The most important thing is that the confidence students had in their lecturers as at that time is still there. Your gesture has brought hope as the faculty grows. I feel proud to be associated with you,” he said.

Among the dignitaries at the event were former lecturers such as Prof Taiwo Osipitan (SAN) and Prof Kassim Momodu.

  • A reunion of Christ’s family

Past and present members of the students’ fellowship arm of the Charismatic Renewal Ministries, University of Calabar (UNICAL), have held a family reunion. OBIANUJU ASOUZU (500-Level Environmental Resource Management) reports.

The sky was cloudy, threatening to rain. Despite the threat, the students and alumni of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) still went about they were doing. One after the other, the guests filed into the Magnificent Auditorium of the Charismatic Renewal Ministries to start the programme.

It was the three-day biannual reunion of past and present members of Charismatic Students’ Fellowship (CSF) tagged “Christ the centre of our life”. It was held from Friday to Sunday.

It was attended by past members from different parts of the country. Among them were Mrs Sonye Allanah, former Minister for Foreign Affairs, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), UNICAL, Prof Miranda Dosunmu, chairman of reunion committee, Pastor Tony Mfon, Prof Robert Nneli, Dr Dennis Nkagha, Brother Bede Ogu, Mrs Cornelia Ndue, Dr Chijioke Osakwe among others.

On arrival, guests were given souvenirs, which contained branded notepads and t-shirts and reunion anthem leaflet. They were ushered into the auditorium, which was colourfully lit and draped in cream and navy blue. After the hall was filled up, Moses Ogbonna and Joan Okori started the programme with prayer, after which the fellowship choir rendered gospel songs. This was followed by recitation of the reunion anthem by Esther Awan.

Addressing the gathering, Pastor Mfon urged the brethren to always look back and check the progress of the fellowship. He said the aim of reunion was for the brethren to worship as a family once again. “It feels good seeing beloved ones whom we have not been opportune to see for a long to encourage and strengthen one another spiritually, socially and to encourage the present members by the words of our testimonies,” he said.

He further urged members to always put God first in anything they do, advising that they should solely depend on Him for everything. The first day was rounded off with a special dinner.

On Saturday, the occasion was divided into two sessions – morning and evening. The morning session featured prayer, praise and worship, choir ministration, and sermon by alumnus of the fellowship, Brother Bede.

In his words, Bede said time had passed when Christians would pretend to be religious. He said Christianity had gone beyond going to church in vain, adding that a good Christian must have a personal encounter and understanding of God. He shared testimonies of how God healed him of asthma attack and other diseases.

The highlight of the session included a symposium moderated by Prof Dosumu. The speakers were Allanah and Prof Robert. The discussion focused on “God’s faithfulness in my life and career”.

Allanah told a moving story of how she was born again in her final year in UNICAL. She said she expressed her faith in Christ because of the love and care showed to her by roommates, who she described as good Christians. “Their character encouraged me to join the family of CSF and from there, I learnt how to solely depend on God and serve Him better. It is God’s love and mercy that have sustained me till this moment,” she said.

She shared wonders of God in her life. “Through prayers, God changed my genotype information from ‘AS’ to ‘AA’ to suit my life partner, who is ‘AS’. This is why I want to encourage young Christians to keep your faith and trust in God in every situation,” she stated.

On his own, Prof Nneli shared how God manifested His power to save him and his family from bullets and accidents. He also shared testimony of how God made him the first professor of Human Physiology at Abia State University (ABSU) despite frustrations from his colleagues.

The evening session featured the business meeting, a platform that offered members to present report on how the fellowship had fared and its challenges. The alumni made cash donation to the fellowship’s cause and gave pieces of advice to the present members.

Pastor Mfon commended participants for making the reunion worthwhile. He urged members to look forward to 2015, which is the date chosen for another reunion meeting.

A participant, Mercy Ajuka, 300-Level Geography, said: “When my friend invited me for this programme, I didn’t know it would be fulfilling. I was inspired by everything that happened in the programme and I will like to be part of this wonderful family.”

Esther Akpan, a final year student of Banking and Finance, said: “CSF family is so blessed. I was inspired by the testimonies shared by the guests. I look forward to the next reunion.”

  • ARG not part of Afenifere reunion, says Oshun

ARG not part of Afenifere reunion, says Oshun

Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) yesterday said it was not part of the purported reunion of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, as the latter claimed, following its recent meeting in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The ARG Leader Wale Oshun said members of the ARG have no antecedent of fraternity with the conservative politicians in Afenifere.

He noted that such politicians have been antagonistic to progressive ideas in the Southwest.

Oshun told reporters in Lagos that ARG cannot have dealings with an Afenifere, which he said harbours the likes of Senator Iyiola Omisore.

He added: “If Omisore sits in Afenifere, the bodies of Chiefs Obafemi Awolowo, Adekunle Ajasin, Bola Ige and Abraham Adesanya will turn in their graves.”

The ARG leader denied any tension between the group and the Chief Reuben Fasoranti-led Afenifere.

He explained that its delegations had visited Fasoranti, Sir Olaniwun Ajayi and Chief Ayo Adebanjo at various times to brief them on ARG activities.

Oshun said: “ARG is a group with explicit and untainted moral values and stance. We affirm, therefore, that anybody that purported to be an ARG member and sits in a meeting with Iyiola Omisore as well as some of the other personalities mentioned at that meeting, is on his or her own. Such individual cannot and will not be a member or an associate of ARG.”

There have been speculations that the Fasoranti faction of Afenifere, allegedly supported by Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko, is being positioned to play a critical role in the endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan for 2015. But the old Awoists in the association said it would be hard for them to hobnob with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Oshun alerted Southwest residents to the clandestine moves by the PDP to encourage the formation of new political parties to cause confusion in the region.

He said: “We are aware of the plans by the PDP-led Federal Government to take the advantage of our historical sensibilities by promoting certain individuals to form political associations and political parties in our region as well as funding them through spurious and dubious contracts to use them as agents of destabilisation. This is for a sinister 2015 agenda.

“We are putting this in the public space so that our people would be informed about the threats that are being massed against them. However, this is Yorubaland. We are veterans in this kind of struggles and we dare say that we are not battle-weary. We will, as usual, fend this off.”

The ARG leader expressed concerns over persistent Boko Haram threats to the peace and unity of the country.

He urged the Federal Government to halt the frequent bloodshed by the Islamic sect.

Oshun expressed misgivings on the agitation for amnesty for the sect, as being canvassed in some quarters.

The ARG leader doubted if an amnesty would end the sect’s activities, adding that it might even create an opportunity for anarchists to have a field day.

He added: “Considering the structural deficiency of this country, it is not likely that we would see an end to the use of amnesty. Therefore, in line with our constant agitation for the imperative of restructuring this multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-faceted country, it is our view that there is no better time than now to convene a national conference that would finally resolve the nationality question that consistently and continuously pushes this country to the precipice.”
