  • ‘Oral health can reveal onset of chronic diseases’

PERIODIC visits to dentists for mouth examination have been described as a proactive way to prevent or detect chronic diseases.

The initiator of the Project Smile dental makeover, Project Smile 4.0, Dr Amy Traore-Shumbusho, said this  was because oral diseases are often linked to chronic disease.

She spoke during the announcement of more beneficiaries on Project Smile Season Four, as part of activities to mark the World Oral Health Day.

The theme was: Project Smile 4.0 Smile Alive! It was a free treatment to people with dental defect or flaw problems.

Dr Traore-Shumbusho said “when one visits a dentist same can easily detect diseases in the body before they progress to chronic stage. This is because the mouth is the gateway to the overall well being of the body.Everything that goes inside the body goes through the mouth,” she said.

She said this was in addition to the statistics given by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that  globally, 60 to 90 percent of school children and nearly 100 percent of adults have dental cavities.

“Severe periodontal (gum) disease, which may result in tooth loss, is found in 15 to 20 percent of middle-aged (35-44 years) adults,” she said.

Dr Traore-Shumbusho said: “Risk factors for oral diseases include an unhealthy diet, tobacco use and harmful alcohol use. These are also risk factors for the four leading chronic diseases which are cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, and oral diseases are often linked to chronic disease. Poor oral hygiene is also a risk factor for oral disease. Oral disease in children and adults is higher among poor and disadvantaged population groups.”

She said risk factors for oral diseases include a poor oral hygiene. “neglecting your dental and oral health, diet, personal habits and tobacco are the main causes of mouth, tooth, and gum problems,” said Dr Traore-Shumbusho.

She added: “Not many people pay attention to the health of their mouth which we call Oral Health. In the universe of healthcare, oral health has yet to become reckoned with as other fields of medicine. It’s impressive the work that the World Dental Federation, FDI and its country chapters such as the Nigeria Dental Association have been doing to raise awareness, sensitise and influence behaviours towards adopting basic oral hygiene. I wish to use this occasion to reiterate our commendation for their efforts and the World Oral Health Day.”

To be a beneficiary of the Project Smile dental makeover, Dr Traore-Shumbusho said one must be 18 years and above, “and log on to www.projectsmileng.com to register. The Project Smile 4.0 is an eight-week call-for-entry/call-to-entry.  I call on people who are really in need for dental makeover, those who are affected by dental flaws and have been stimatised all their lives for this. The Project smile will provide a standard Smile Makeover of standard dental care. Contestants must be from age 18 and above. Entry is simply by visiting the Project Smile website to enter the required bio data, picture, and story in no more 360 words.”

On previous beneficiaries, she said:“The World Oral Health Day is a parallel platform, hence, it serves as our launch pad for the Project Smile initiative as it is a day set aside by the World Dental Federation to give attention to oral healthcare and dental matters and issues on a global scale. As we launch the fourth season, it is pertinent to mention that a total of 17 young men and women spread across the country have become beneficiaries out of which more than 50 percent have completed their smile makeover treatment.

“Project Smile initiative also aims to align with the ideals of the FDI World Dental Federation through the World Oral Health Day to promote basic oral healthcare and advocate a widespread recognition of dentistry. “Not many people pay attention to the health of their mouth which we call Oral Health. • ‘Your eyes can reveal your health status’

‘Your eyes can reveal your health status’

OYEYEMI GBENGA-MUSTAPHA writes that in addition to being precious organs, the eyes can  give tell-tale signs of the state of the body.

AN iridologist, Dr Gilbert Ezengige, says the eyes are capable of revealing the health of the body.

He said iridologists can look at the iris, or the coloured part of the eye, and tell what is wrong with the body.

In an interview, the medic said:   “The fibre structures that make up the iris are actually nerve fibres, and these reflex to every part of the body. So, by assessing the fibres and colours, we can determine, which areas of the body lack balance and need nourishment.  With Sclerology, we  look at the whiteness (sclera) of the eyes. The markings that appear in the whites also relate to parts of the body. Generally, the iris reveals more long-standing imbalances, while the sclera reveals areas of concern right now.”

Ezengige said the eye is the window of the body as various writings, ancient and modern, point to the relationship between the eyes and the body. “One of such statements that is notably striking is recorded by St Luke in the Bible. ‘When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body is full of darkness (Luke chapter 11 verse 34)’.

“So swift in registering impressions are our eyes that even our emotional states and dispositions can unconsciously be broadcast by us and read by very observant lay men. We always sense something “cold” emanating from the enemies’eyes and those planning evil and something “warming” radiating from the eyes of a true child, a friend’s eyes or eyes of strangers that bring good tidings.

Emotional disturbances, such as fear, anger, and disappointment   leave their subtle impressions in the eyes. Expressions, such as evil eyes, lonely look, forgiving look, empty look, weary look, romantic eyes, etc are used very commonly in our daily conversations,” he said.

He said iridology is a safe, non-intervention diagnostic technique, as it requires no needles and  anesthetic or drugs. Yet, it does provide a valuable guide to health and disease.

Ezengige continued: “If every doctor about to do surgery employed an iridologist as a diagnostician, many exploratory operations would be avoided. The eye is an extension of the brain, recording patterns relating to physical conditions of the body.”

According to him, iridology has its beginnings in Europe while Sclerology has its basis in the Chinese culture as well as in Native American oral tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. Russia uses this tool extensively and it is taught in their medical schools. Why? It is affordable and less invasive.

‘’While the study of iridology is vast and intricate, everyone can glean valuable health information from the eyes – beginning with eye colour, as this determines what iridologists call one’s primary constitutional type.

“There are three primary constitutional types: brown eyes (Hematogenic), blue eyes (Lymphatic) and mixed brown/hazel eyes (Biliary). Each type is constitutionally predisposed to its own health challenges. Thus, there are supportive lifestyles, herbal, supplemental and dietary factors, that each type can do to promote balanced health.

‘’The eye’s colour alone reveals a great deal of positive information.

There are only two basic iris colors: blue, brown and a mixture of the two, appropriately called ‘mixed’. All irises can be placed in one of these colour groups. Green eyes do not really exist as the green appearance of the iris is usually due to discolouration or yellow patches in a blue or mixed colour iris. The effect of which are shades of blue from the iris shown through yellow discolouration.Mixing blue and yellow produces green. Although every iris is different, we generalise them according to the colour on health and disease probabilities,’’ he said.

‘’Brown-eyed people tend to have a faster reflex than those with blue eyes. Experiments show that the darker the eye, the faster your reflexes are. Peter Post of New York Hospital clinically tested reflex action by electronically dropping a ruler, accompanied by a buzzer or flash of light. Volunteers had to catch the ruler as it fell. Variables, such as gender, and age were taken into account, but the results showed that the darker the iris, the faster your reflexes. Brown-eyed people consistently caught the ruler more times than blue-eyed people. The colour of the iris is determined by melanin. Fair skinned (Caucasian) can have brown, blue and mixed colour iris as well as darker skinned people can have the same variations. This work has helped Iridologists understand the nature of their patients, and has highlighted the differences from one iris color to another. Blue Iris called Lymphatic has a random iris structure, appearing bluer towards the outer edge.Young people with blue eyes tend to have sinus, throat and breathing problems, such as asthma. In later life rheumatism and arthritis are frequent. The lymph system of the body is often overloaded and this is a good reason why lymph drainage massage works well for people with blue eyes. The kidneys can be sluggish and this may lead to water retention.’’

Ezengige also said: ‘’Brown Iris called Haematogenic is very densely pigmented and on close inspection resembles a velvet carpet. Very few individual fibres can be seen, viewing through a bio-microscope makes it easier. People with deep brown eyes usually need more vitamins and minerals in their diet. This genetically low mineral status often leads to glandular disturbances. Blood and circulation disorders are associated with this iris type and may cause problems, such as anaemia. Mixed Iris:called Biliary, may appear as hazel or green eyes. This category is a genetic mix of both blue and brown, over many generations. The iris may appear with patches of blue brown or orange in its fibers. This group often suffers from digestive disorders and blood sugar imbalances, particularly connected to the liver and gall bladder and pancreas function. Fluctuations in blood sugars may cause hypoglycemia (diabetes), with its symptoms of sudden, extreme tiredness, chocolate cravings and mood swings, among others. From just colour alone, the iris reveals much information.

“But the eye is a complex structure, a web of delicate fibres forming a unique pattern of lacuna, defects, pigment spots and other iris markings. It is this individual pattern that is studied by an iridologist. Not only the particular type of structure marking is noted, but also its location on the iris chart is important to establish the iris/body connection.’’

Giving further insight into how  Iridology and Sclerology work,  Ezengige said it is natural to ask:  why consult an Iridologist?

He said a Chinese proverb says: ‘A poor doctor cures; a good doctor prevents’.

”Iridology takes this to heart. All medicine longs to prevent a disease or disorder from occurring, any type of doctor would agree that it is easier, and more cost effective to nip disease in the bud. Iridology is ideally suited to prevention in the true sense. We all have genetic weaknesses of some type or another, if we were perfect we would be super-beings, not human.’’

The iridologist noted the  weakened organs or glands that may not be producing symptoms or even discomfort. By studying the iris markers, the iridologist could offer suggestions on how to avoid a disease or dysfunction occurring. By identifying the external stimuli that trigger the weakness to manifest itself; symptoms of disease may be avoided, or at least, delayed.

This could be clarified by iridology’s simple formula: Genetic Weakness + External Stimuli = Symptom (GW+ES=S). By carefully observing dietary intake, lifestyle, habits and environment, the iridologist could identify irritants to an individual’s health,” he explained.

“Living within the personal limitations of genetic inheritance may be the best way of achieving longevity. Human beings are immensely diverse and adaptable to their environment. If we recognise and identify any weaknesses that we may have, we are better able to avoid an external stimulus that would cause disease. For example, a person may smoke 20 cigarettes a day and live to a ripe old age – providing he does not have a genetic weakness that involves smoking. Conversely, a person may never smoke, yet develop lung cancer if he has a genetic lung marker,”Ezengige added.

Make-up artists reveal magic behind the movie, The Meeting

THE special effects and make-up of the stars, especially that of Rita Dominic who played the role of Clara Ikemba, a woman in her 50s was one of the talking points of the movie titled The Meeting.

However, the makeup artiste behind the makeup, Jennifer Joe-Alegieuno, has opened up on how she was able to achieve the spectacular feat. According to the South Africa – trained artiste, “Turning a diva into Clara was really exciting because unlike most make-up artistes in Nigeria, who love all the beauty part of the job, I really love creating weird! The process of aging Rita involved a lot; backaches, early wake up calls, and above all, a detailed understanding of the character which I related to my matron from secondary school.”

Speaking on the challenges, Jennifer said, ”due to the humid atmosphere here in Nigeria, I had to deal with heat causing the skin to sweat and lifting the products used off her face. Also, I had to deal with the fact that special effect supplies are unavailable for purchase here, so we were a bit limited and couldn’t really do the build up of character we really wanted.”

The Meeting will be premiered at an elaborate event on Friday, October 19, 2012 with a cross section of celebrities in attendance and will be in cinemas the same day.

The movie is based on the premise of corporate espionage interwoven with political patronage, bureaucratic red tape, and Cupid’s arrow while in hot pursuit of a ‘meeting’ to secure a government contract.
