MLS Cup winner Fanendo Adi has revealed he has spoken with Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh, who has assured him he will soon be called up on the back of his exploits in the United States of America.

Benue State-born Adi netted 19 goals this season for Portland Timbers to clinch a historic MLS triumph.

“I am hopeful (I will be called up by Nigeria). I have talked with the coach and he has assured me I will get my time,” he said.

Adi, who has also featured in Slovenia, was a few years ago called up by the Nigeria Olympic team.

With a year left on his contract with Portland Timbers, Adi said he will rule out a move away from the MLS before the expiration of his contract. Speculations have linked him with a move to England, Italy or Mexico.

“I have been hearing the rumours, but there is nothing official yet. I still have a contract with Portland Timbers, but we will look into any offers,” he said.

Fred Amata reveals plans for AIFF

About two months after he was appointed the acting Director of the Abuja International Film Festival (AIFF), Fred Amata, a veteran actor, director and producer, seems to have been having a brainstorm on how to raise the profile of the festival founded 11 years ago by Fidelis Duker.  In particular, the award-winning thespian is interested in changing the face of the festival by making it truly international.

Speaking with reporters recently in Port Harcourt, Amata, who will be co-hosting the coming BON awards with OAP Gbemi Olateru Olagbegi, said: “The good thing to know is that the vision of the Abuja International Film Festival is very clear. Over the years, there have been challenges to actually attain it. So, my task is actually pursuing that vision and bringing new twists to it. For instance, we have decided that because Nollywood is such an influence on the society today, we want to have an opening night at the highest possible level.  We are looking at hosting it at Presidential Villa. Also, we know that there are several movies still in the works in Nigeria today and we have sourced one of them, 1987, a film by my colleague, Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen O’dua. We are positive that it will be the opening film of the festival. It will be premiering to open the Abuja International Films Festival. For us, that is the way to go. The world over, the biggest films try to go to the biggest festivals for their premiere before they get to the market place.

“We have another film coming from collaboration between myself and some international companies, including Akon who has now gone into film-making. Apart from this, we are hoping that we can get collaboration with the Chinese government to bring some of their major stars and movies. We have a major china movie with Jackie Chan in it and it will be showcased at the festival. We are hoping he will grace the ceremony, barring any logics problems. That is the path that any film festival must toe, if it must become truly international. So, that is what we are trying to achieve.”

The 11th Abuja International Film Festival AIFF is scheduled to hold between September 23 and 26 at the Prestigious Silverbird Cinemas, Abuja.

It will feature the screenings of over 60 cutting-edge films from around the world, with a special focus on films from the Nigerian movie Industry, otherwise called Nollywood, and Africa.

  • Martins reveals Russians’ secrets

    Martins reveals Russians’ secrets

Levante are banking on Nigeria international Obafemi Martins to earn maximum points as they host visiting Rubin Kazan in today’s Europa league tie.

Coach of the side Juan Ignacio Martínez believes Martins’ knowledge the visitors will come handy in today’s tie

Levante, who are currently 11th in Spain’s Primera Division, have yet to lose at home in five matches in European action and will hope to continue that form against Rubin, who knocked out holders Atletico Madrid in the last round.

The coach is not the only one optimistic that the experience of the Nigerian will be vital, teammate and midfielder Vincent Iborra is equally sure that the homers will get a good result using Obafemi’s input as a launch pad.

The Spanish side progressed to the last 16 after a 4-0 aggregate win over Olympiacos, and Iborra knows the first leg at home gives them the chance to stamp their authority on the Russian side.

“Our goal is to get as far as possible,” Iborra told the club’s official website.

“We are not favourites. It is our first participation in Europe and they have much more experience than us.

“We do not know when we will return to play in Europe. Hopefully it will be very soon.

    “We must seize this opportunity.”

Martins played for the Russian Premier League side before a season-long loan spell at Birmingham and his subsequent switch to Levante.

Iborra said: “He (Martins) told us how to play and how we can hurt them. He told us that it’s a very physical team, very well built and leverages the opportunities created in attack.”

However, Iborra denied that Martins’ admission that he would like to leave Levante has caused tension in the side ahead of the clash.

“It is true that we would like to forget about these issues,” the midfielder said.

“We have to isolate ourselves from all that and focus on Rubin Kazan because we cannot afford to be distracted.”

Rubin have not lost in four away games but they will have to contend without defender Cesar Navas for both legs of their tie with Levante after he was banned for three games following a red card against Atletico.

Rubin were beaten 1-0 by Atletico at home in their last match, but their two goals from the first leg was enough to see them through to the last 16.

  • Emeghara reveals his idol

    Emeghara reveals his idol

Siena’s Nigeria-born Swiss striker Innocent Emeghara tells his story: “I grew up in Zurich, where I studied economics. I modelled myself on Ronaldo.”

Emeghara arrived in Siena just in the January transfer window, after spending 18 months at the French club Lorient. Siena reached a deal to bring the 23-year-old to Serie A on loan.

He made his debut for the Tuscan side against Udinese and scored his first goal the following week in the 3-1 victory over Inter. He’s not stopped scoring since: another goal against Bologna was followed by last weekend’s two goals in Siena’s emphatic win against Lazio.

The morning after his impressive brace Emeghara is the man of the hour, as interview requests suddenly begin pouring in. Emeghara has a bandage on his right hand, “I injured it, don’t squeeze it too hard.”

La Gazzetta dello Sport published a photo of his mismatched boots, one adidas and one Nike, which is like seeing a marriage between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Eme laughed, “I don’t have any personal sponsors. Nobody has offered me a contract. The other night I was feeling a little discomfort in one foot, so I changed my boot without paying any attention to the brand.”

Emeghara emigrated to Switzerland as a youngster, where he joined his mother in Zurich and started playing football. “I love Nigeria, it’s my homeland,” he said. “But I owe a lot to Switzerland.”

His sense of gratitude for his adopted country enforced his decision to play for the Swiss national team: “I’m proud to represent the country that welcomed me to Europe.”

The young forward grew up admiring Nigerian stars Jay Jay Okocha, Obafemi ‘Obagoal’ Martins, Nwankwo Kanu; but his true idol was a Brazilian.

“I was in love with Ronaldo at Inter. Today I watch Messi’s touches and movements over and over again.”

Despite four goals in as many appearances, Emeghara is keen to play down his rich scoring vein.

“It’s not important how many goals I score,” he said. “What’s important is that my goals help us win games. Siena’s safety comes before all else.”

He dismissed talk of a possible future at one of Europe’s bigger clubs. “I live in the present,” he said. “The future comes later. Right now all that counts is Siena.”

That attitude has helped him settle in in the changing room, where he goes by an unusual nickname. “My teammates call me Cesare [Caesar] but I don’t know why,” he explained. “Julius Caesar? Come on, don’t be ridiculous.”

  • Eneramo reveals : Eagles snub was painful

Eneramo reveals : Eagles snub was painful

MTNFootball.com: How would you describe your time in Turkey?

Eneramo: So far, so good, my time here in turkey has been wonderful and great. I have been enjoy good seasons here with Sivasspor and getting goals.

It was speculated you will leave Sivasspor before this season began, are you thinking of leaving the club?

I am not thinking of leaving Sivasspor now. I have a contract with them which runs till May 2013, so I am poised to end the season with them and move to bigger club for a bigger challenge.

How did you feel being left out of Eagles despite your goals for Sivasspor?

Honestly, it was painful. I deserved to be in Eagles considering my form and performance for my club. It is unfortunate the team coach didn’t consider me for selection. I think he should have given me equal opportunity like the others.

Are you hoping for an Eagles recall?

Yes, it is my wish, I want to return to national team because it is always my dream to play for Nigeria. I will be glad if I am given a chance to return. I did well while I was there with four goals from 10 games. With my performance with my club too I think I merit it.

What can you say about the Eagles success at the AFCON in South Africa?

It was a good moment for us all as Nigerians after a long wait. I told you before the competition started that we have a good team that could do well in South Africa, if they take their chances well, which they did.

Do you regret you opted to play for Nigeria and not Tunisia?

No, I have never regretted that decision. Choosing Nigeria, my fatherland, ahead of Tunisia will always be the right decision for me. I chose Nigeria because I want to make my country proud. So, it is always painful when I don’t get chance with the team even when I deserve to. But now I hope to be back.

How can you compare the Tunisian league with the league in Turkey?

They are both strong and good leagues, but the Turkish league is stronger and could even be compared to the English or German league because there are a lot of world-class players playing in Turkey. It is more competitive here than Tunisia.

Do you miss anything about Tunisia?

Yes, of course, I was an idol while I was in Tunisia with Esperance. Everybody loved me. I miss the fans, my friends, teammates and the officials. I had good time in Tunisia winning the league championship every season that I played.

What are your targets with Sivasspor this season?

We want to finish among top five teams. We started well and we hope to continue that way.
