Oni’s team will revolutionise NEPZA operations, says MD

The Managing Director of Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), Hon. Emmanuel Jime,  has described the appointment of the board of the Authority as one that would add value and revolutionise it.

Jime, who made this known during an interactive meeting with staff, said the coming of the board would complement the on-going restructuring, repositioning and rebranding efforts under his watch.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy National Chairman (South), Olusegun Oni, was recently appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the Chairman of NEPZA.

A statement by the Head, NEPZA Corporate Communications, Mr. Simon Imobo-Tswam, quoted the managing director as saying the rich experience of the Oni and his outstanding members would accelerate the pace of reforms, innovations and new thinking sweeping through the Authority and its free zones.

The statement reads: “We are delighted with the coming of our long awaited board, chaired by Engr. Segun Oni – one-time governor of Ekiti state and, the current APC Deputy National Chairman (South). We have great expectations from him and his distinguished members: Messrs.

Kabiru Tafida, Sadiq H. Gwarzo and Taiwo Okunlola.

“The chairman is a former governor, and with his rich, composite and cosmopolitan experience as a teacher, unionist, journalist, engineer, bureaucrat, technocrat, grassroots mobilizer, entrepreneur, sales specialist, international consultant and honorific chieftaincy title-holder as the Asiwaju of Ifaki-Ekiti, we know he and his able team would revolutionise our operations.”

Jime said there were plans to continue with the rebranding of the agency, promising to synergise more with industry stakeholders with a view to boost the economic diversification agenda of the present administration.

    Registrar’ll revolutionise JAMB, says Okebukola

A former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Peter Okebukola, has said the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is-ahaq Oloyede, will revolutionise the agency.

He also said the outgoing Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, did well.

Okebukola, in a statement, said the registrar is “a no-nonsense, clear-headed scholar, who is globally consulted on higher education matters”.

The statement reads: “With about nine years as head of JAMB, Professor Dibu Ojerinde has done well. The transformation, which he took the Board through, is huge. He modernised the operations of the Board at such a dizzying pace that I used to fondly call him the “magician” in JAMB. I note that he worked with exceptional directors and I should single out Dr. Yusuf Lawal, who oversees Test Administration.

“With the appointment of Professor Is-haq Oloyede as the new registrar, JAMB is in for a revolutionary time in terms of delivering more effectively on its mandate.

“Professor Oloyede parades excellent credentials to lead a whole sector, such as education in Nigeria, hence asking him to head a parastatal in education is like asking a Five-star, battle-tested general to quell a fight between two area boys in Ajegunle! Professor Oloyede ran University of Ilorin as a model for the Nigerian university system and served dutifully as chairman of the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities and at the continental level, as president of the Association of African Universities.

“He is a no-nonsense, clear-headed scholar, who is globally consulted on higher education matters, including issues dealing with admitting quality students which fit in with the JAMB mandate. I am convinced that he will smoothen the rough edges of the unfortunate furore around the 2016 admission exercise.

“On the matter of the relevance of JAMB, I am unshaken in my belief that at this time in the nation’s higher education development, JAMB is still a relevant player.

“The important thing is for JAMB not to overstep its bounds by infringing on those areas where the universities should exercise their autonomy. Post-UTME, as originally conceived in 2004, not in its adulterated form, is still a must if we are to get better quality students for our higher education system.

“Rather than shut the door on Post-UTME, we should scape off whatever the universities are not doing right and not throw the baby away with the bath water.”

  • Don urges in-coming legislators to revolutionise agric

A former Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ilorin, Prof Abiodun Adeloye, has advised incoming members of the National Assembly to work with the Federal Government to ensure the agriculture sector is a leader in providing high quality food in the future.

He said it is crucial that everyone works together in the quest for self-sufficiency in food production.

He said the new government should come to power with a detailed and positive agenda for agriculture, to make the sector more dynamic, competitive and effective to address  areas such as improving foreign direct investment, enhancing farmers’ ability to tackle animal and plant health, building safe and secure food chains.

Adeloye observed that there was a need  to  reverse long- term declines in farming productivity.

He urged lawmakers to develop a blueprint for future agriculture policy as many farmers are feeling the squeeze of higher production costs.

Suggestions include additional money for research and marketing for value-added products, innovation, development and extension, competitiveness and market access.

Adeloye, who  is the Coordinator WAAPP Nigeria projects at the university, said the sector would need a large  funding, and  that issues affecting the competitiveness of the agricultural sector, within the country should be singled out for an overhaul.

He called on the government to address issues around the cost of doing agro business, regulation, access to capital and critical infrastructure improvements.

He urged the National Assembly to be proactive in engaging with Nigerians to find out what they think about agriculture, what their values are, regarding food production, and to proactively attempt to build better and more constructive relationships with community and activist groups, including those who are currently campaigning against the programmes  of the  sector.

According to him, achieving food security  requires  a commitment by leaders in all sectors to ensure  a sustained and focused effort to end hunger.
