JUST IN: ONSA slams El-Rufai over ransom payment claim

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has described as “baseless” the claim by former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai that the current administration engaged in ransom payments or inducements to criminals.

The ONSA, in a statement on Monday by its Director of Legal Services, Zakari Mijinyawa, said El-Rufai’s allegations “are not only false but also contradict verifiable facts on ground.”

The statement clarified that neither the ONSA nor any government agency under this administration has ever engaged in ransom payments or inducements to criminals, and has consistently cautioned Nigerians against paying ransom.

It said: “From inception, this government adopted a dual strategy: decisive kinetic operations alongside community engagements aimed at addressing local grievances. The result is evident in areas such as Igabi, Birnin Gwari, Giwa, and other parts of Kaduna that once suffered untold terror in Kaduna state but are now experiencing relative peace.”

The ONSA stated that the kinetic operations led by gallant military and security agencies, which have resulted in the capture or elimination of notorious bandits, have been widely reported in the media, though some of these successes came at a great cost, with some of our brave officers paying the supreme price.

According to ONSA, in Kaduna alone, notorious kingpins who once terrorised residents, including Boderi, Baleri, Sani Yellow Janburos, Buhari and Boka, among others, were eliminated. Recently, leaders of Ansaru who had established bases in Kaduna were also apprehended.

“For a former governor of a state in the person of El-Rufai to deny these sacrifices on national television is both unfair and deeply insulting to the memories of our security personnel,” the statement said.

The ONSA cautioned El-Rufai and all political actors to refrain from dragging national security institutions into partisan conflicts, emphasizing that the fight against banditry is a “collective struggle, not a platform for political point-scoring.”

UPDATED: No safe haven for criminals, says Ribadu

…hands over 128 kidnap victims to families

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has assured that the federal government would intensify the onslaught against terrorists, vowing that there will be no safe haven for criminals.

Ribadu gave the assurance in Abuja, on Tuesday, when he handed over 128 civilians rescued from bandit captivity in Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State.

The victims, comprising men, women, and children, were freed in two waves of military and intelligence operations earlier this month, according to the NSA.

He said, “Let me be unequivocally clear: this work will continue. There will be no respite in our operations. There will be no safe haven for those who terrorize our citizens. We will hunt them, we will find them, and we will bring them to justice – or they will meet the same fate as the many kingpins already neutralized by our forces.”

Ribadu commended the military, security and intelligence agencies for their role in the rescue, describing their efforts as a “crushing blow to the networks of terror that seek to undermine our peace.”

He assured Nigerians that the government of President Bola Tinubu would sustain both kinetic and non-kinetic measures in the fight against insecurity.

Ribadu noted that the government has, in recent months, reunited mothers with their children, husbands with their wives, and communities with their loved ones.

“Each rescue is a victory for the Nigerian people,” he said.

Beyond the rescue, the NSA emphasised that victims would receive trauma care and psychosocial support before reuniting with their families, insisting that “healing is as important as the rescue itself.”

Ribadu also urged citizens to remain vigilant and support security forces with timely information, saying their resilience and cooperation were key to defeating criminal networks.

The rescue, he added, was not an isolated event but part of a broader security strategy designed to dismantle bandit groups and restore peace across Nigeria.

The national coordinator, National Counter-Terrorism Centre, Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, explained that the victims were freed during coordinated security operations carried out in two phases earlier in August.

According to him, the first group of victims — 42 individuals comprising 14 males, 27 females, and a toddler — were rescued on August 14. The second group, comprising 88 individuals made up of 34 males and 54 females, was freed on August 19.

“Unfortunately, among the second group, we lost one of the children due to illness, likely from the fatigue they suffered while in captivity.

“In addition, one of the women gave birth prematurely after the rescue, and the baby is currently receiving medical attention, ” Laka added.

He noted that since their rescue, the victims have been under the care of the ONSA where they received psychological support, medical treatment, and rehabilitation.

“With their recovery process ongoing, we are now handing them over to the Zamfara State Government for reintegration with their families and communities,” the Laka added.

The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, commended the efforts of the government and security agencies in rescuing the victims.

Sununu however, advised the freedom victims to see their freedom as an opportunity to strive for their future, urging them to embrace education.

Lawyer hails Ribadu, service chiefs over arrest of high-profile terrorists

Olaojo Temitope, a Canada-based lawyer and Chief Executive Officer of Vincent Jo Hotels & Suites, Lagos, has praised the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, the service chiefs, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for their coordinated efforts that led to the arrest of high-profile terrorists across the country.

In a statement on Wednesday, Temitope described the breakthrough as “a reassuring signal that Nigeria is no longer a safe haven for those who thrive on violence and bloodshed.”

He said the synergy between the NSA’s office and the military hierarchy marks a new phase in the country’s fight against terrorism.

“For the first time in a long while, Nigerians are beginning to see proof that intelligence sharing, patience, and professionalism can yield results in the fight against terror,” Temitope noted.

He commended Ribadu and the service chiefs for showing that terrorism can be confronted “without fanfare but with diligence,” while also lauding President Tinubu for providing the political will and operational support to make the feat possible.

Temitope urged security agencies to consolidate their gains by adopting innovative strategies.

He advised the government to expand investment in community-based intelligence networks, strengthen border security to choke arms supply routes, and establish a comprehensive rehabilitation programme for deradicalised insurgents.

“Apprehension of criminals is good, but it must not be treated as an end. We need to move from reactive to preventive measures. That means investing more in technology-driven surveillance, collaborating with local vigilante groups, and addressing the economic roots of terrorism such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of education,” he advised.

Olaojo, who doubles as CEO of WhiteRock Energy Resources further appealed to Nigerians to complement government efforts by volunteering timely information to security agencies and avoiding narratives that glorify violence.

“Security is a collective duty. If our communities remain silent out of fear or apathy, terrorism will continue to mutate. But with cooperation, vigilance, and government’s renewed commitment, Nigeria can finally turn the page on this dark chapter,” he added.

Presidency hails Ribadu’s performance as NSA, lists gains against terror, banditry

The Presidency has commended the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, for his performance in office.

Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, described Ribadu’s 25 months in office as a turning point in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, banditry and other security threats.

In a detailed assessment in a post on his X- page, Olusegun said Ribadu’s appointment as NSA has redefined the office and produced visible results across different regions of the country.

Olusegun recalled that President Tinubu inherited multiple security crises on May 29, 2023, including renewed terror attacks in the North, rising banditry in the North West, large-scale crude oil theft in the Niger Delta, and violent activities by IPOB in the South East.

He said Ribadu, who had earlier served briefly as Special Adviser on Security, was appointed NSA after the President overhauled the security architecture and appointed new service chiefs.

According to him, Ribadu prioritised inter-agency cooperation and intelligence-led operations, fostering synergy among security and intelligence agencies while leveraging his international contacts to strengthen Nigeria’s intelligence capacity.

Olusegun highlighted several gains under Ribadu’s coordination:capture of masterminds of terror attacks: Security forces arrested key suspects behind past high-profile attacks, including the March 2022 Abuja-Kaduna train attack and the July 2022 Kuje prison break.

”Reduction in banditry and terror attacks: Military offensives in Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, and Sokoto neutralised bandit leaders, freed thousands of hostages, and restored safety to highways such as the Abuja-Kaduna road.”

“Boost in oil production: Crude oil output rose from below 1mbpd in April 2023 to about 1.8mbpd today, as security clampdowns curtailed pipeline vandalism and theft.

“Relative peace in hotspots: Communal and ethnic clashes in Southern Kaduna, Plateau, Taraba, and Benue have declined, with government interventions combining security force action and non-kinetic engagements.”

“Degradation of IPOB/ESN: Military offensives and legal steps against IPOB’s foreign funding channels weakened the group, while sit-at-home orders have lost ground in the South East.”

The Presidency noted that Ribadu’s tenure has been supported by President Tinubu’s consistent backing, including new military procurements, improved welfare for troops, and increased deployment of technology for intelligence and surveillance.

Olusegun maintained that while challenges remain, Nigeria’s security architecture is now stronger, highways safer, oil production more stable, and farming communities gradually returning to normal life.

    • Marwa: President’s strategic support aids agency’s successes

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration will continue to strengthen the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) due to the agency’s strategic value to the success of the country’s national security architecture.

Ribadu spoke at the inauguration of 46 new vehicles distributed to strategic commands and formations of the NDLEA yesterday in Abuja.

The NSA praised the agency’s Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), and his team for their sustained commitment, discipline and energy in transforming it into a result-oriented force against illicit substances.

He described illicit drugs as among the most destabilising threats to Nigeria’s national well-being.

“I commend the Chairman, General Mohamed Buba Marwa, for his discipline, commitment, and transformative leadership. Under his watch, the NDLEA has become a result-oriented force addressing the grave threats posed by illicit drugs that undermine our national security, social stability, and public health.

“This event is not just about commissioning vehicles. Without the mobility to swiftly reach danger points, intercept traffickers and move resources where they are most needed, our fight is severely constrained. The link between drug trafficking and insecurity is systemic.

“Criminal gangs thrive on drug profits. Insurgents and armed groups fund their activities with it. Countless young Nigerians fall victim to addiction, with devastating consequences for families and communities.

“This is why the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu prioritises drug control as a pillar of our national security strategy. The President’s unwavering support, through funding, inter-agency cooperation, and policy alignment, has directly enabled today’s milestone,” Ribadu said.

Also, Marwa described the event as symbolic in NDLEA’s continuous effort to reposition itself as a modern, efficient, and respected organisation.

He said: “The procurement of these vehicles was made possible by the fiscal backing of this administration, which continues to demonstrate a strong resolve in addressing the root causes of insecurity and social dislocation.

“Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the President has prioritised national stability, institutional reform, and the safety of every Nigerian life. That trust motivates us to deliver even more.”

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), hailed President Tinubu for helping the NDLEA to achieve so much under Marwa in the last two.

He said: “Without an understanding President, it would be very difficult to have this type of gathering today. So, my first appreciation goes to him. There is a very, very close nexus between drug trafficking and all the crimes that we have.

“The chairman has chronicled some of the effects of these illicit drugs. They embolden criminals. And when the thing wears off, then you discover that they are just ordinary mortals like you and I.”
