Richarlison’s brace seals Spurs’ victory over Burnley

Two goals from Richarlison, including a stunning scissor kick, helped Thomas Frank win his first Premier League match in charge of Tottenham as his Spurs side proved too good for newly promoted Burnley.

Brazil forward Richarlison only scored four Premier League goals in 2024-25 but was superb as he showed the form that convinced Spurs to pay £60m to sign him from Everton three years ago.

He scored the first league goal in the Frank era when he did superbly to spin and control a shot on the turn after only 10 minutes, following excellent work on the right from Mohammed Kudus on his Spurs league debut following his £55m summer move from West Ham.

The two linked up again for Spurs’ second, Kudus hanging up a cross from the byeline and Richarlison acrobatically volleying in, with the goal repeatedly shown and enjoyed by the home fans in the stadium’s four big screens.

It got even better for Tottenham in the 66th minute as Richarlison started the move – the ball fell for Pape Matar Sarr and he played it through for Brennan Johnson to race clear and provide a clinical finish.

Richarlison was given a standing ovation by the home crowd when he was replaced in the 71st minute by Dominic Solanke, who almost grabbed a fourth but shot narrowly wide.

Former Brentford boss Frank only became Spurs manager in June, replacing the sacked Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed 16 days after guiding the club to their first trophy in 17 years when they beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final.

EPL: Richarlison scores again as Spurs move into top four

Tottenham Hotspur moved into the Premier League top four after beating Everton in a thrilling encounter.

Richarlison opened the scoring against his former club with his fourth goal in three matches, before Son Heung-min doubled Spurs’ advantage soon after.

Everton deservedly pulled a goal back through Andre Gomes, in his first Premier League game since May 2022.

But Spurs move above Manchester City – absent from league action due to the Club World Cup – into fourth.

Defeat for Everton ended a four-match winning run and leaves then just four points above the relegation zone.

Brazilian Richarlison put the hosts ahead after just nine minutes, slotting in Brennan Johnson’s low cross at the near post.

Son doubled Spurs’ advantage soon after, with Johnson again providing a key supporting role. The Wales international picked the ball up from a short corner and fired in a powerful drive which Everton keeper Jordan Pickford palmed away.

It fell to Son, who slid the ball home with Pickford caught in a crowd of players and unable to intervene.

Everton showed plenty of attacking intent in an entertaining match, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored five minutes after half-time – only for the video assistant referee to disallow the goal following a foul by Gomes on Emerson Royal in the build-up.

Gomes, who spent last season on loan at Lille before suffering a calf injury, made some amends with a fine volleyed strike on 82 minutes to set up a grandstand finish, but Spurs held on.

I will seek psychological help – Richarlison

Tottenham striker Richarlison says he will “seek psychological help” when he returns to England after the international break.

Richarlison was pictured in tears after being substituted during Brazil’s 5-1 win over Bolivia on Saturday.

He said the reaction was down to “getting the things that were happening off the pitch out of my system”.

Richarlison has scored only four goals in 40 games for Spurs since joining for £60m from Everton last summer.

“I went through a turbulent time off the pitch during these past five months,” he told Brazilian newspaper O Globo.

“Now things are a bit more stable at home. People who only had their eye on my money are no longer close to me.

“Things are going to flow now and I’m certain that I will have a good run at Tottenham and will make things happen again.

“I’m going to return to England and seek psychological help, from a psychologist, to strengthen my mind. That’s what it is about, to come back stronger.”

Richarlison missed a great chance before being replaced in the 71st minute in the home World Cup qualifier against Bolivia in Belem, and was substituted 64 minutes into Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Peru in Lima.

O Globo reported that Richarlison has split with long-term agent Renato Velasco.

“That moment of sadness wasn’t about having played badly,” said Richarlison.

“In my opinion, I didn’t play a bad match in Belem. It was more about getting the things that were happening off the pitch out of my system, which had gotten out of control not because if anything I’d done but because of people close to me.”

Brazil play World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela on 13 October and Uruguay on 18 October

Tottenham, second in the Premier League, host Sheffield United on Saturday.

“I think I will be part of the next (Brazil) line-up – that’s what I’m working towards,” said Richarlison.

“It’s about doing a good run at Tottenham. I’m going to sit down and talk to them. I need a good run, get into the flow of play and settle in.”.
