  • Rider faces N225,000 theft charge

    A 26-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Peter Ogunbiyi, has been arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly stealing a motorcycle, valued at N225,000.

    Ogunbiyi, who lives at 5, Matogun Road, Ogun State, on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The accused denied the charges.

    The prosecutor, Victor Eruada , told the court that the accused and others at large, committed the offences on August 9 at Olusesi bus stop, Iju Ishaga, a Lagos suburb.

    He alleged that the accused stole the motorcycle, property of the complainant, Mr. Jagun Fatai, from where it was parked at night.

    “The accused was caught by a security guard.”

    The offences contravene sections 287 and 411 of Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. G. O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused bail at N200,000 with two sureties. and adjourned till September 19 for trial.

  • Two arrested in Ondo for ‘killing’ Okada rider

    Two friends have been arrested for allegedly killing a commercial motorcyclist identified as Thomas Amusan at Ile-Oluji/Ipetu Ijesa Expressway in Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo local government area of Ondo State.

    The suspects – Rilwan Rasheed and Sheu Akande – were accused of killing the deceased and also stealing his motorcycle.

    Police spokesman Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident, said the suspects committed the crime on August 8.

    Joseph narrated that Rasheed and Akande asked the commercial motorcyclist to take them to one of the villages in the area but later killed the deceased on the way and took away his motorcycle.

    “They asked the deceased to take them to a nearby village. On getting to a junction, they asked the man to stop and as they were trying to snatch the motorcycle from him, he resisted. So, they have to start matcheting him till he died.

    “After they have succeeded in killing him, they dumped his lifeless body in the bush and took the motorcycle away.”

    He added that when the men of the command got the information about the incident, they swung into action and through an intelligent move, the suspects were able to be apprehended.

    The police spokesman assured that the suspects would soon be charge to court.

  • Honour for 10-year accident-free Okada rider

    A commercial motorcyclist in Omole Phase 1 Estate, Ikeja, Lagos, Johnson Ogbu, was honoured on Saturday for riding for 10 years without an accident.

    Ogbu was honoured at the 2016 Omole Phase 1 Residents’ Association (OPRA) Dinner and Awards Night organised to mark the 20th anniversary of the Community Development Association (CDA).

    Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs Alhaji Musiliu Folami said there were over 6,000 registered CDAs in the state, describing OPRA as one of the best.

    Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development Mr. Wasiu Anifowoshe promised to facilitate a new transformer to improve power supply to the estate.

    Awards were given in various categories, including Special Recognition Award, Special Award, Corporate Social Responsibility Award, Best Public School Award and Best Private School Award, among others. But the award that ignited the loudest ovation was that of Johnson Ogbu, who, having riden his commercial motorcycle for 10 years without crashing, was adjudged the estate’s Okada Man of the Year.

  • Okada rider docked for ‘assaulting’ colleague`s daughter

    A commercial motorcyclist, Kamaru Manihouri was  arraigned at the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court for assaulting his colleague‘s daughter, Rofia Badmus.

    Manihouri, who resides at Aloba Street, Lagos Island is facing a two-count charge of assault and conducting himself in a manner that could breach public peace.

    The Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Andohemba Koti said the accused person committed the offence on August 1 at the complainant’s residence on Adeniji Adele area of Lagos Island.

    Koti said the complainant had informed the police on the same day that the accused went to her residence, beat her up, and inflicted injuries on her.

    The prosecutor said the accused took the action out of annoyance when he discovered that the complainant could not tell him where her father had gone to when he came looking for him.

    “He came looking for her father and when the complainant said she could not ascertain his whereabouts and asked him to return later, he took that as rudeness, got furious, slapped her and inflicted injuries on her,’’ he said.

    He said that the offence contravened Sections 191 and 166 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2011.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate L.A Owolabi granted the accused N40,000 bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until August 20.
