Wike/Amaechi rift: What manner of probe?

Controversy has continued to trail the activities of the Commission of Inquiry set up by Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike to probe his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi. A section of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) believes that the investigation is necessary to foster accountability. But, many indigenes have cried foul, saying that the governor set up the panel to humiliate his former boss because he collaborated with progressives in other geo-political zones to abort the second term ambition of former President Goodluck Jonathan. EMMANUEL OLADESU examines the politics of the probe and the crisis it has unleashed on the Southsouth state.

The probe of former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi is generating ripples. Governor Nyesom Wike, who set up the Commission of Inquiry to investigate his predecessor, has explained that Amaechi has a duty to shed light on the finances of the state when he was in charge. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has hailed the probe, said that it is a moment of accountability.

But, many indigenes have objected to the probe, saying that the governor is full of vendetta.  The investigation, in their view, was meant to dent the image of the former governor. They argue that,  a credibility crisis is being orchestrated by the PDP to discourage President Muhammadu Buhari from nominating Amaechi for any position in the Federal Executive Council. Between now and the time the President will name his cabinet, the campaign of calumny will intensify in the media to pull down the former governor.

According to the Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC), Wike is afraid of the rising influence of Amaechi, who is perceived as one of the heroes of democracy. In a statement, the APC Chairman, Davies Ikanya, said: “These retrogressive forces, led by Governor Nyesom Wike, are so afraid of the shadow of Amaechi to the extent that they are willing to go to any length to ensure that he is not accommodated in President Buhari’s cabinet.” The party chairman said that it is ironical that Wike, who rode to power through a flawed electoral process, has raised a panel to probe his successor.

Four years ago,  Wike and Amaechi, were political allies. Wike, a lawyer, was Amaechi’s Chief of Staff. During the second term battle, he was also the Coordinator of the Amaechi Campaign Organisation. Little did the two friends know that they will part ways, ahead of the last general elections. Their political difference has polarised the Southsouth state. While Amaechi defected to the All progressives Congress (APC), following protracted rift between him and former President Goodluck Jonathan, Wike became the arrowhead of the PDP in Rivers. Amaechi worked for President Buhari’s success at the poll. But, he was succeeded by Wike, although the battle has now shifted from the ballot box to the court.

On the campaign podium, Wike had threatened to probe his former boss. When he was sworn in, he unfolded a plan to carry out a forensic audit of government accounts. He said the probe is consistent with the anti-corruption crusade of the APC-led Federal Government. Amaechi challenged him to carry out the threat.

On June 19, the governor set up the panel. The commission is headed by Justice George Omereji. Other members are Dr. Edith Chukwu, Chief Monday Ekekenta, Ven. Alex Isifo and Elder Ignatius Piegbara. Reacting to the setting up of the panel, Amaechi said it was not set up in good faith, adding that it was a sham  and fraudulent witch-hunt to deceive the people. “All the noise Wike is making is to grab media headlines with his lies of monumental corruption against Amaechi. It is all drama made for the media. What is playing out is a script written and directed by Nyesom Wike. Wike should move to Nollywod where his devious skills would probably be useful. While it is no longer in doubt what would be the report of Wike’s sham probe commission, what may shock Nigerians is the extent Wike has gone and is ready to go to manufacture stories of corrupt practices and the kind of bogus tales of corruption against Amaechi that he would soon be feeding the nation,” he added.

It is not the first time Amaechi will run into storm in his political career. When he vied for the governor, powerful forces nearly denied him the mandate. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said his ambition had k-leg. He survived. The second term battle was also fiercely fought in Rivers. At the end, he was victorious. His second term was turbulent. The former President, Jonathan, and his wife, Dame Patience, who hails from Rivers, moved against him. At a public function, the former first lady snatched the microphone from him. Later, the police, led by Joseph Mbu, became a thorn in his flesh. He was even denied entrance into his office. The battle shifted to the House of Assembly. Efforts to impeach Amaechi unlawfully were resisted. Despite the awesome presidential powers, he triumphed.

The on-going probe is another phase of his political life. Efforts to stop the probe has failed. A court has affirmed the right of the governor to probe the previous administration. A High Court Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, said the panel was set up, not to investigate the former governor in person, but his defunct administration.

However, many stakeholders have picked holes in the investigation. Former Rivers State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Worgu Boms described the probe as a comedy of errors. He accused Wike of bias, saying that he has demonstrated prejudice. He also alleged that some members of what he described as ill-conceived and ill-motivated panel, have their bias towards the former governor.

His counterpart in the Ministry of Information, Mrs. Ibim Seminitari, described the probe as an unnecessary diversion from subsisting electoral issues. Besides, she said the probe cannot dent Amaechi’s image because he lived up to expectation as governor. The former commissioner said that the people will always applaud the achievements of the governor in the last eight years. “These achievements are visible in all sectors,” she added.

Amaechi, who has never underestimated Wike’s capacity for politicking, reasoned that the governor set up the probe to create more crisis so that stakeholders can bring the two sides to reconciliation. He said, since Wike knew that he got to the State House through fraudulent election, he decided to witch-hunt him so that he can yield to pressure to withdraw the suit against his victory. Amaechi said that the APC and its candidate, Hon. Dakuku Peterside,  will now bow to pressure to abandon the case.

Explaining why he has refused to appear before the panel, the former governor said the panel is illegal. “He has not complied with the law in setting up the panel. The rule of natural justice and fair hearing is not adhered to. You sit down and you tell a man, ‘go and find him guilty openly. He is guilty; go and investigate him,” Amaechi stressed.

The former governor denied the allegations of corruption. He said Wike should reflect and examine himself before throwing stones. He challenged anyone to name any account in his name, except his official salary account and the FCMB account. When the time is ripe, he promised to open upon Wike.

Amaechi said: “The funny thing about the young man is that he knows that I know him. I know Nyesom Wike up to his companies.; Zico, Easy E. I was his governor and I have documents to show that he is a contractor. I have Wike’s account details. But, you don’t reply him by saying, you see, you are a thief, see what you stole. It will appear like I am a thief, but you are also a thief. So, what you do is to say no, I am not a thief and I don’t know what this man is talking about.

“Rivers people forget so easily, and I annoys me. During the campaign,  I named the roads that nyesom Wike did and abandoned. He is reconstructing some of them after we have paid him and no Rivers man is talking or asking, except the young boys who are replying him on the social media.”

  • Obanikoro/ George rift tears Lagos PDP apart

Obanikoro/ George rift tears Lagos PDP apart

The protracted crisis in the Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is threatening its existence. Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN examines the factors responsible for the split and its effects on the troubled chapter.

The crisis in Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new twist last week when 34 members of the State Executive Committee (SEC) met at the party secretariat and announced the removal of the Chairman, Capt. Tunji Shelle (rtd). Explaining why he was sacked, the committee accused Shelle of mismanaging campaign funds  and failing to ensure a transparent primary which ultimately  led to the party’s defeat.

Observers see the removal of the chairman as a fallout of the battle of supremacy between the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, and the party leader, Chief Olabode George. According to analysts, Obanikoro is locking horn against George over the control of the party. Shelle is a protégée of George.  According to a source, the removal of Shelle was aimed at the leadership of George.

Despite the sack handed to him by the SEC, Shelle has vowed not to vacate office. He insisted that his removal was null and void, adding that members of the SEC did not abide by the party’s constitution. The embattled chairman said Secion 59(3) of the constitution states the procedure for removing a member of my status. It states: “Notwithstanding any section of this Constitution relating to discipline, no executive committee at any level, except the National Working Committee, shall entertain any question of discipline as may relate or concern a member of the National Executive Committee, president, vice president, governors, deputy governors, ministers, ambassadors, special advisers or members of the legislative houses.

“By section 31 (1), I am a member of the National Executive Committee and I have been attending meetings. So, they cannot remove me. I remain the Chairman of the PDP in Lagos State. The so-called SEC members would be sanctioned for their action”.

Shelle lent credence to the speculation that Obanikoro instigated his impeachment when he said “one of the aggrieved aspirants at the governorship primary sponsored my removal.” The primary, which Jimi Agbaje won, caused a friction in the party last year. Obanikoro and his supporters rejected the results and went to court. Obanikoro alleged that George and some party elders inflated the number of votes, which did not tally with the number of accredited delegates. It took the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan before Obanikoro withdrew the suit.

Shelle said the move to remove him was conceived long before the primaries, took place. He said efforts were made to rig the primaries, but I stood my ground to prevent the illegalities. Until now, the so-called opposition in the system has not accepted defeat, he said.

“I tried as much as possible to curtail their excesses so that their actions would not affect our chances in the general elections and this I was able to do until when they carried out their failed coup.

“The emergence of Agbaje as the PDP candidate was well received by these people who did the impeachment. They were disappointed and were, at all times, finding a way to fight back. Agbaje remains the best candidate ever produced in the history of the party and I have no regrets whatsoever to have presented Agbaje and other qualified candidates for the elections.”

But, the newly appointed acting chairman of the party, Mr Kamaldeen Olorunoje, disagreed with Shelle on the legality of his removal. He explained that there were allegations against Shelle. A committee was set up to investigate and establish the veracity of the allegations. The committee recommended his removal and that had been done. It was unanimously decided that I should take over the leadership in acting capacity. This is democracy. It is a game of number. The State Executive Council is made up of 49 members out of which 35 endorsed the removal of Shelle. The decision was backed by more than two-third majority as required by the constitution. Even after the decision was taken, more members have indicated to join our rank. We have come to the conclusion that Shelle’s leadership is not the best for the Lagos PDP, if the party must make progress.

On the allegation that Obanikoro sponsored the impeachment, Olorrunoje denied it. He said Obanikoro can never influence him because Obanikoro met him in the party. “I am a founding member of the PDP. The issue at hand doesn’t concern Obanikoro. What does he stand to gain? We are concerned about how to restructure and reposition the party for future elections. Though I am Obanikoro’s friend, I believe in the party’s supremacy more than Obanikoro. He can’t dictate to me. Despite the fact that we are friends I joined the party before Obanikoro. We were together in the Grassroot Democratic Movement, but we parted ways when he went to the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and I joined the PDP. I have an independent mind when it comes to taking decision”.

Youth activist Babatunde Davies is happy with the development in the Lagos PDP. He said the removal of Shelle will put an end to dictatorship in the party. According to him: “Shelle was in office playing the bid of Olabode George. There is no transparency and accountability in the party. It is run according to the whims and caprices of the party leader. For the just concluded general elections, the Presidency released millions of naira to the state chapter to mobilise support for the party.

“We only hear of figures. The funds were not released for the purpose it was meant for. I am calling on the PDP national headquarter to probe the campaign funds sent to the Lagos State chapter. I can assure you that, if the funds were judiciously used, the party would have performed better than it did. This is not the first time that party funds would be diverted. That explains why the PDP keep losing elections in the state.

“I think the likes of Bode George and Adeseye Ogunlewe should retire from politics and allow the youths to take over the leadership. For as long as they remain leaders, PDP will never win in Lagos. Olorunoje and his group should not be distracted in their struggle to give the party a new lease of life. We cannot continue to be telling the same story every election year. Enough is enough. We need a change of leadership in Lagos PDP.

To a party chieftain, Mrs Gloria Adebajo- Fraser, the removal of Shele was wrong. She described it as a premature exercise that will end in futility. According to her, the removal was at variance with the provisions of PDP constitution.  “It cannot hold as the National Working Committee is the only platform that can entertain the recommendation of the State Working Committee and take a decision after he(Shelle) has been given a fair hearing.

“It is obvious that there is an ulterior motive  behind the sudden drive to remove the chairman suddenly. I totally disagree with the fact that the call for the National Chairman of PDP, Adamu Mu’azu to resign could justify the unconstitutional attempt to to remove the Lagos PDP Chairman. One has nothing whatsoever to do with the other and is only an excuse for initiating a leadership change in the party. The change should be by the people when the next congresses will be held witout imposition of candidates.

“The stakeholders should be given a chance to elect their representatives and leaders on a level playing field. May be the members are not interested in Bode George or Musiliu Obanikoro. May be they want a change. May be they want a new face. It is a season of change in Nigeria’s political landscape.”

Adebajo-Fraser urged party leaders to be patient, saying the Lagos chapter needs to be united and all leaders ought to be carried along. She said: It was not a time to fight, but a time for peace.

  • OPC: No rift between Lagos and Ndigbo

OPC: No rift between Lagos and Ndigbo

A faction of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) yesterday warned against any affront on the Lagos monarch, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, over his recent intervention in the political process.

The group said any attempt to drag the royal institution in the mud will be tantamount to disrespect for the cherished custom, culture and tradition of Yoruba.

OPC National Coordinating Council (NCC) also said that the Yoruba and the Igbo will continue to co-exist peacefully in Lagos.

A council member, Monsuru Akande, urged Igbo people to reciprocate the kind gesture of Yoruba in Lagos.

Akande said in a statement that OPC will resist any attempt to rubbish the royal stool of Eleko for Partisan reasons.

    The statement reads:

“The attention of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has been drawn to some unruly and unbecoming comments purportedly in reaction to alleged comments by the paramount ruler of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu and warn all those involved to desist from such unbecoming acts forthwith.

“The institution of the oba is one the Yoruba race hold in high esteem, and the OPC as irredentist defenders of Yoruba culture and heritage would therefore not tolerate anybody -irrespective of their places of birth of conviction- to denigrate what their hosts (Yorubas) hold sacred.

“While we accept that that institution should remain non-partisan, it must also be acknowledged that the Palace of the Oba of Lagos has already claimed that the royal father was misrepresented in the press and pleaded for understanding.

“Be that as it may, the Yoruba’s accommodating and loving nature should not be misconstrued as timidity.  As hosts, we have given all our visitors enough space and opportunity to bloom and flourish without molestations, and of all the tribes and visitors in Lagos, none has enjoyed the benevolence of Lagos and indeed all of Yorubaland as much as the Igboman and nation.

“The evidence of the claim above can be found in the fact that Yorubaland as a whole is the most cosmopolitan area in Nigeria.  We Yoruba have allowed other tribes to own businesses, properties and even contest and hold political positions on Yoruba soil in a manner unreciprocated anywhere else in Nigeria.

“Using the same Lagos as an example, the fact that the likes of Pastor Ben. Akabueze and Joe Igbokwe have become an integral part of the political frame work of Lagos State for years now is proof enough that Lagos and indeed the Yoruba are excellent hosts. Akabueze has for the last ten years been directing and coordinating the economic direction of the state from his enviable position as the honorable commissioner for budget and planning while Igbokwe has held sways general manager at LASIMRA and head, UFRU.

“Others such as Ngozi Nwosu the popular actress from Imo State who got N6million for overseas surgery, the late comrade Chima Ubani whose family got cash and a gift of 3bedroom accommodation at Marwa Gardens as well as First Consultant Hospital that got N50 million as compensation for involvement in the Ebola case are evidence that the Igbos are not despised in Lagos.

“Nowhere in Nigeria -east of the Niger- is the Yoruba or any other tribe accorded the kind of gesture the Igbos have been enjoying in Lagos in the last 12 or so years since these bonafide Igbo men entered into the Lagos political scene.

“As for the likes of Bode George, Fani-Kayode, Musiliu Obanikoro and their party the PDP, their outcry is the reaction of a person or group without shame and critical thinking (arojinle). Is it that they have a case of memory dysfunction or are they just plain mischievous. Have they so quickly forgotten that it is their party that started the politicisation of the institution and monarchy with the President’s visit to the same Oba of Lagos earlier this January as the forerunner to visits to many other obas in Yorubaland.  None of the PDP members complaining now saw any thing wrong with the attempts to involve our obas in partisan politics until it backfired against them and their party.

“This brings us to the warning we issued earlier, when Gani Adams in his treacherous, sycophantic and reactionary move turned on the good people of Lagos unleashing violence and threat of violence against the perceived enemies of his paymasters.

“If Adams had not behaved like an omo ojuorolari, he should by now be defending the sacredness of the stool of the Oba of Lagos or any other one in Yorubaland for that matter.

“If Adams had not collected the billions he did, along with MASSOB and other ethnic groups, his co-travellers would now be degenerating and abusing our hospitality the way no one can replicate in their homelands.

“In closing, we enjoin all members of the OPC and indeed the Yoruba nation to beware of the enemies within like Gani Adams and with one voice condemn all fifth columnist within our fold. And with the foregoing it is abundantly clear that Gani Adams who brought this odium upon us must quit the OPC.”

‘No rift between police, civil defence’

The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, said yesterday that there was no rift between the Nigeria Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Ojukwu, an acting commissioner of Police, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on phone that the police and the NSCDC were members of the same family, working for one purpose.

He dismissed reports that policemen attacked NSCDC operatives in their headquarters in Abuja.

According to him, the story was untrue.

Ojukwu said: “The Police and the Civil Defence are one family. Our relationship is that of a brother and a sister. We don’t have any problem with them.

“The negative stories making the rounds about attacks are not true.”

He said the police were investigating the alleged attempt by a police inspector to shoot others at the Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ade Abolurin, in Lagos.

On August 22, NSCDC alleged that a police inspector attempted to fire at Abolurin in Ikorodu, Lagos.

The Corps, last Friday, also alleged that about 10 policemen launched an attack on its men in front of the NSCDC headquarters in Abuja.

‘No rift in Kwara United Board’

The story making the rounds that the board members of Kwara United Football Club of Ilorin went haywire on the sharing formula of allocation is unfounded and a purported act by the enemies of the Kwara darling team to derail the management, create confusion and pitch the board against the teeming supporters of the club.

A statement by the Media Officer of Kwara United FC, Olayioye Ajide said the release posted on a website was frivolous, unfounded and a deliberate act to cause disaffection among the management and supporters.

Olayioye said nothing of such occurred as the board on the said Tuesday discussed issues on to how to move the club forward even as urgent provision was made to pay the players their December salaries on Friday despite the fact that the government’s subvention has not been cleared.

The Media Officer, Olayioye Ajide added that the Technical Manager , Coach Samson Unuanel did not abscond neither did he threaten to abandon the team.

‘As I am talking now, Coach Unuanel is fully on ground and intact with Kwara United and nothing went wrong with his residence, whoever cares can call him for clarification. And let me quickly add that whosoever is in doubt on any development should contact me, I am always available for any information and clarification on Kwara United’.

He noted that the management board under the chairmanship of Barrister Bamidele Aluko is focused and determined to bring about scintillating and result-oriented performances in the new league season as already reflected in the appointment and recruitment of players.

The media officer called on football followers and lovers of Kwara United to disregard such smearing story as the club is set to make meaningful impact in the new soccer season.
