Ferdinand bemoans Man United’s miss on Osimhen

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has urged the club to consider a loan move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen before the January transfer window closes.

Frustrated by United’s 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, which saw them field Kobbie Mainoo as a makeshift striker, Ferdinand believes the club needs a proven goal scorer.

“I 100 per cent agree with you. I completely agree. A natural number nine. Victor Osimhen, I would have gone with Osimhen on loan. Get him on loan now!” Ferdinand said on his YouTube show.

Ferdinand believes Osimhen, who has scored 17 goals in 21 appearances for Galatasaray this season, would provide a much-needed goal scoring threat.

“He guarantees you someone who can get on the end of things, scores goals, experienced, done it at the top level,” he added.

Ferdinand expressed disappointment with the impact of Rasmus Hojlund, stating, “I’ve watched Hojlund closely the last two games… it just doesn’t add up. I’d be going to get Osimhen now if we can do it from a financial standpoint. Get him on loan now!”

Osimhen is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, meaning any potential move would require negotiations with both clubs.

Galatasaray do not want to let Osimhen leave and want to sign him on a permanent deal.

The final call would come down to Napoli who hold all the cards in transfer negotiations for the Nigeria international.

Despite the challenges, Ferdinand believes a loan move for Osimhen could be a game-changer for United, who are currently struggling to maintain their position in the Premier League.

Rio Ferdinand ready for just one pro fight

Rio Ferdinand has revealed that his aim is to step into the ring for just one fight.

The former footballer, who played for Manchester United and England, announced last month that he is attempting to switch sports at the age of 38 and has been backed by bookmakers Betfair.

Ferdinand had previously said he had ambitions of challenging for a belt but has now admitted he does not see the move into boxing as a change of career.

He told BBC Breakfast: ‘I want to see if I can get a licence and become a professional and have one fight.

‘I am not looking to have a career here. I am looking to have a professional fight and I will see where I go then.’

Despite his admission, Ferdinand was adamant his attempt to become a boxer was something he is taking seriously.

He said: ‘This is not a joke. Hopefully, I will get a license, go on to become a professional and fight someone.

‘Boxing can’t be a gimmick. If I take it lightly, I will get hurt.’

If Ferdinand successfully obtains a license from the British Boxing Board of Control, he will follow fellow former footballers Curtis Woodhouse, Leon McKenzie and Leo Roget in doing so.

However, his career plans more closely mirror former England cricketer Andrew Flintoff, who won his only professional fight over four two-minute rounds against American Richard Dawson at Manchester Arena in 2012.

Rio Ferdinand tries hands on boxing!

Just over two years on from announcing his retirement from football, former England captain Rio Ferdinand has launched a sensational bid to become a professional boxer.

The former England captain, 38, will take on Betfair’s ‘Defender to Contender challenge’ in the hope of earning a fighter’s licence from the British Boxing Board of Control.

But Ferdinand is not the first sportsman — or even the first former footballer — to turn his hand to boxing. Here, Sportsmail charts the fortunes of some of those who have tried to forge a career in the hardest game…

    Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff

Flintoff, one of England’s finest ever all-rounders, made his name as a destructive fast bowler and middle-order batsman.

The 6ft 4ins cricketer tried to take those skills with him into the ring when he began boxing under the guidance of father-son duo, Barry and Shane McGuigan.

In November 2012 Flintoff made his professional debut, topping the bill against unbeaten American heavyweight Richard Dawson at the Manchester Arena.

Despite being floored in the second round, the ungainly Flintoff battled to a points victory in a fight labelled a ‘circus’ and ‘disgrace’ by some within the spot.

The former cricketer never fought again but he defended his foray into boxing, saying: ‘Some of the criticism I can understand, people want to respect this sport, that’s fine. But some of the cheap swipes I can’t be bothered with.

‘This was never about degrading boxing. We wanted to do it properly and show boxing for the fantastic sport it is. At times boxers don’t get the credit they deserve.’

    Curtis Woodhouse

After former Sheffield United and Birmingham star Curtis Woodhouse fell out of love with football, he decided to pursue his ‘first love’ – boxing.

Having sparred in the gym after training without his manager’s knowledge, Woodhouse quit football altogether and made his ring debut in 2006.

Eight years and 26 fights later the 37-year-old achieved his dream by outpointing Darren Hamilton to win the British super lightweight title

    Anthony Mundine

The son of legendary fighter Tony Mundine and a talented basketball player, Anthony Mundine is one of Australia’s most successful — and most controversial — multi-sport stars.

But it was in rugby league that he originally made his name. Having made his professional debut at 18, he was poised to become the NRL’s biggest earner when he gave up the game altogether at 25.

With concerns over racism in rugby, the Muhammad-Ali-inspired Mundine took up boxing and made his debut in 2000.

He was a national champion within five fights and challenging for a world title within 11 contests. He was beaten by Sven Ottke to the IBF super middleweight crown in 2001 but went on to win the WBA strap two years later.

  • Heartbroken, Rio Ferdinand Loses Mum Two Years After Wife’s Death

Heartbroken, Rio Ferdinand Loses Mum Two Years After Wife’s Death

Rio Ferdinand has been left heartbroken by the death of his mother to cancer after she stood by his side through the turmoil of losing his wife just two years ago to the disease.

Janice St Fort, devoted mother to Rio, died in hospital at the age of 58 after losing her battle to breast cancer with her crushed family at her bedside.

The tragic news comes just two years after Rio lost his wife Rebecca through cancer – something he spoke movingly about in the BBC’s Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad earlier this year.

His mother featured in the documentary and provided strength for the former footballer who struggled bravely with the responsibility of raising his children without their mother being around.

A statement issued by Rio and the family nodded to Mrs St Fort’s role in helping the former footballer through the loss of his wife, saying: ‘Our mum was the centre and the heart of our family and has supported us all through many difficult times, always with a smile on her face.’

‘We are heartbroken to announce that our amazing mum Janice passed away today after an ongoing battle with cancer,’ the statement read.

‘She was an inspiration to us all and was loved by everyone who knew her. She died at Guy’s Cancer Unit, London Bridge Hospital, with her loving husband Peter and us, re, at her bedside.

‘She was a devoted mother to us all, and she was the most incredible grandmother to our children.

    ‘The whole family are devastated.

'She was an inspiration to us all' read the statement issued by Rio, Anton and the family

‘Our mum was the centre and the heart of our family and has supported us all through many difficult times, always with a smile on her face.

‘Her strength and courage, as well as her great sense of humour and immense kindness, were never-ending.

‘We would like to thank all the staff at Guy’s Cancer Unit for looking after our mum so well during her illness especially Marta and Joanna as well as everyone who has sent kind wishes to us all during this difficult time.’

Mrs St Fort was just 17 when she had Rio, and with their father playing little part in the brothers’ upbringing on a tough estate, her ability to instil discipline was crucial to their ability to keep out of trouble.

She was described as ‘the backbone of the family’ with one relative recalling: ‘If Janice told Rio to be home by 7pm, he’d be there by one minute to, or her voice would be echoing all over the estate.’

Just as the former Manchester United defender was coming to terms with the loss of Rebecca, his wife of six years, he has been hit with another hammer blow.

He was meant to feature in the Star Sixes exhibition tournament at the O2 in London tonight, but has withdrawn in light of the news.

In the emotional documentary which aired earlier this year, he admitted he had turned to alcohol to help him cope with the pain.

Rio’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 but had appeared to be clear of the cancer following treatment.

But cruelly, a scan in 2015 revealed it had returned and spread to her bones and she died just five weeks later on May 1.

The speed of the decline hit him so hard he spiraled into despair and he struggled to cope with the grief.

On top of the tragic loss, he now had to raise his three children without their mother.
