    RIO OLYMPICS HANGOVER

After Nigeria Taekwondo failed to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics, I knew that the athletes will be abandoned and left to tend to their psychological traumas by themselves. So a couple of us decided to rightly welcome them properly at the Abuja International airport when the athletes flew in from Morocco via Lagos.
My heart felt very heavy when the four athletes walked out the airport entrance looking like orphans as they dragged their bags across the space to meet us. One burst into tears as she said to me, “I wish the technical team that took us to the last All African games was there. It would have been different.” For moments like this, the right words are hard to find so lengthy empathetic hugs are used to fill this void.
Certainly, the athletes should have qualified. No amount of sugarcoating will wipe away the fact that bad leadership decisions led to the non-qualification of the Nigeria Taekwondo team bidding to qualify for the last Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
For the sake of faded memories, the four Nigerian athletes that represented us at the African Olympic Qualification tournaments in January 2016 were all finalists at the All African Games which held just three months before the Olympic qualifiers.
All these talented athletes needed to do was get to the finals again in a similar African event, but all four failed to do so because of an ill-advised solitary leadership decision to replace the winning technical team that led the team to the All African Games with an ineffective political team for the Olympic qualifiers.
This particular situation with the Nigeria Taekwondo athletes was one that scarred me deeply because it did not need to happen. Even if Nigeria Taekwondo lacked major funding, we certainly did not lack the technical knowledge and goodwill to qualify for Rio 2016 Olympics.

What frightens me is what happened after we failed to qualify for Rio 2016 Olympics?
The leadership of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation did not take responsibility for the failure. Up till today, there was no accountability whatsoever to the board or Nigeria Taekwondo community for the historic failure – no board meetings, no memos, no explanations, no resignations, nothing! Just silence and the passage of time.

When enough time had passed to blur memories, blames was put on “lack of no money” and exaggerated “rancour within the board”. It was conveniently forgotten that Nigeria Taekwondo won only one gold at 2015 All African Games, their worst result in 26 years. As with the Olympic qualifiers case, bad leadership that preferred solitary decision-making to collective board decisions is the primary culprit.
This ensured that the leadership failed its most important stakeholders – the athletes.
Certainly, these mischievous blames would not have seen the light of day if regular board meetings were held to make collective decisions with regards to the challenges facing the development of the sport.
The present situation makes the upcoming board elections a critical one for the future development of Nigeria Taekwondo, which has the honour of being one of the only five-sport federations out of forty-four that has won Olympic medals for the country. Without hesitation, I am positive that with the right kind of leadership in place, Nigeria Taekwondo can certainly repeat history.
From the challenges of funds generation to making of effective policies to ensuring there is an active implementation of operational plans, there is a lot of collective work to be done by the next board of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation and whoever is elected to be President.
Surely, this is no time to sit on the fence and watch events play out in a manner that would only extend the misery of the sport and its athletes for another four years. It is important that facts are stated so decisions are made based on realistic facts rather than misleading half-truths whispered in the shadows.
While it is impossible to know if a change of guard will turn out to be the “right kind of leadership”, it would be certainly advantageous to the sport to take that risk rather than remain trapped with the failed “status quo”.
With the current leadership that refuses to acknowledge and learn from self-inflicted blunders, the danger with maintaining the “status quo” is that the ghastly hangover of the Rio 2016 Qualifiers can easily slither its tentacles to the Tokyo 2020 qualifiers. Thus, a continuation of the current leadership would only accelerate Nigeria’s Taekwondo downwards spiral into oblivion.
For the sake of athletes like the Rio 2016 Olympics Qualifiers team whose hopes were dashed and dreams broken as a consequence of bad leadership decisions, I am anxiously hopeful that the right kind of leadership is elected during the upcoming board elections.

ITTF W/Cup: Quadri unfazed by setbacks in Germany

Aruna Quadri has taken his early exit at the just concluded ITTF World Cup in good faith while remaining optimistic that the defeat would affect his dream of progressing in his career.

The 2014 ITTF Star Player was beaten by Sweden’s Par Gerell 4-2 and Singapore’s Gao Ning to miss out of the second round of the third most prestigious tournament in the ITTF Calendar.

But a determined Quadri told NationSport before his departure to Portugal from Germany yesterday that the defeat has taught him to continue to work harder.

I think my performance at the World Cup was not too bad because I really gave a good fight but I was not lucky enough to go out of the group. I had chances which I failed to utilize and this really cost me the two losses. Before the tournament, I really worked harder but sometimes you don’t get the results of hard work immediately of which I believed that better days are ahead. I have given my whole ability in Germany and I hope to bounce back positively in subsequent tournaments.

“It is true that the results in Germany will affect my world ranking but I am not bothered about the ranking as there are more events in future which I could amass points to shore up my world rating again as I will keep working hard,”  he said.

However, Quadri is still bothered that despite his rising profile globally based on his quarterfinal berth at the Rio Olympic Games, the Ministry of Sports has not deemed it fit to support his career.

Nigeria will not leave Rio without medals – Minister

Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung , has again reassured Nigerians that the efforts of the athletes competing at the ongoing Rio Olympic Games will not be in vain as, “we will not leave Rio without winning medals’.

Tony Ubani, Press Officer, Team Nigeria, quoted the minister as saying shortly after Union Bank Nigeria PLC redeemed its N30million pledge to support the team.

Although, Nigeria’s name was yet to be on the medal table, Dalung said that he was optimistic that Team Nigeria would still win medals.

According to him, the minister commended the bank for the support.

“We’re grateful for your donation and we promise to ensure a transparent management of the fund, for you to do more.”

Ubani said that Yinka Kadejoh, the Events and Sports Officer of the bank presented ATM cards loaded with N250,000 to each of the athletes .

He said that they could use the cards anywhere in the world.

The  News Agency of Nigeria  (NAN) reports that the ceremony took place at the secretariat of Team Nigeria in Rio.

It’s a dream come true – Aruna Quadri

On the eve of his 28th birthday, Aruna Quadri gave himself a befitting gift after etching his name in the annals of Olympic Games history as the first African to play in the quarterfinal of the men’s singles of Rio Olympic Games following his 4-2 (12-10, 12-10, 11-5, 3-11, 5-11, 11-9) triumph over Germany’s Timo Boll in the fourth round match.

Ranked 40th in the world and considered as the 27 rated player at the Olympic Games, Quadri apart from setting a new record, Quadri caused two successive upsets with the victory over the German, who was a former world number one and now ranked 13 in the world.

Speaking after his victory over the former European champion, Quadri said: ““This is amazing, I don’t know what to say. My fans made me do this. Thank you for all the Brazilian spectators for their support. They gave me so much energy. This feels so good; it is a dream comes true that I am in the quarterfinal.”

Amidst every doubt, Quadri rose to the occasion against Timo Boll when the Nigerian showed his class in front of the Brazilian fans with an emphatic 4-2 (12-10, 12-10, 11-5, 3-11, 5-11, 11-9) to become the first African and Blackman to make it to the last eight of the Olympic Games. The venue was animated as Brazilian fans were thrilled by the superlative performance of the Nigerian.

However, Quadri will face the biggest task of his career when he battles world number one and world champion, China’s Ma Long in the quarterfinal match early on Wednesday August 10.

  • My dream, aspiration for Rio olympic games – Adekuoroye

My dream, aspiration for Rio olympic games – Adekuoroye

Odunayo Adekuoroye was known globally as the dancing wrestler because of her distinctive celebration style after every victory. She has become a known face in the sport that she was among the few athletes invited globally to take part in the lucrative Indian Wrestling League.

From 2014 till date, Adekuoroye has won a lot of laurels for Nigeria including a bronze medal at the 2015 World Championship to become the second Nigerian after Ifeoma Iheanacho, who won bronze medals in 2009 and 2010.

A determined Adekuoroye told NationSport yesterday that she is ready to become the first Nigerian to win an Olympics medal in wrestling.

“I am still believing in my dream which is to become an Olympics champion and the first Nigerian to achieve such feat. By the grace of God, I will not relent in my training and make sure I put in my best to actualize my dream of winning an Olympics medal,” she said.

As long as Adekuoroye is willing to put Nigeria on the world map, she is not too happy with the preparation to the Rio Olympic Games, saying, “Most of my opponents have been featured in nothing less than three major competitions this year, while I only took part in one and these are the same athletes I am expected to compete against in Brazil.

“With just 100 days to the Olympics, we have not really started our preparation and I am still wondering that despite all the honours that wrestling has brought to this nation, most of the country’s millionaires haven not deem it fit to support the sport but they are all looking forward to the athletes to win medals. This is not too good,” she lamented.

The African champion would forever remain grateful to the General Overseer of Mountain of Fire Miracles Ministry (MFM), Pastor Danile Olukoya for his unflinching support for her, adding that the cleric has continued to inspire her with tremendous support.

Adekuoroye is the first Nigerian wrestler to secure her place at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio after claiming third place in the women’s 53kg freestyle at the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas, USA.

dekuoroye, a 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medalist, recorded a 10-0 Technical Fall (TF) against Belarusian Nadzeya Shushko and then a 4-0 win by Pin over Asian champion Zhong Xuechun of China in the second repechage round at The Orleans Arena in U.S.

However, four other female wrestlers, including two males have joined Adekuoroye to secure their spots at the Rio Olympic Games.

  • 2016 Olympic: Egypt embarks on training tour of Singapore for Nigeria

To ensure that they beat Nigeria to the sole spot in the team event of the Rio Olympic Games, Egyptian national team has moved their training camp to Singapore in readiness for the 2016 World Team Championship which serves as qualifiers.

Aside Omar Assar who is playing in the French elite League alongside Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri, every member of the Egyptian team are at present in Singapore warming up for the World Championship holding this month in Malaysia.

Africa’s number one female player, Dina Meshref confirmed this, saying that they cannot afford to lose the spot to Nigeria as the West African remains the only stumbling block to the North African team ambition.

“We are now in Singapore and we hope to play in two ITTF World Tours in Hungary and Germany. After this we will return to Singapore to continue training. We had already qualified for players in the singles event and we want to crown it with wining the sole slot in the men and women team events through the world championships in Malaysia. Nigeria is the only team we believe can give us a tough challenge and we don’t want to leave any chance for them,” she said.

Also to serve as warning signal for Nigeria, Omar Assar was in fine form against world number four, Germany’s Dimitry Ovtcharov in a  thrilling round of 32 match at the just concluded German Open.

A very proud Assar said: “I am very proud to be in Berlin playing particularly against the best players in the world. The German Open is a big part of the
preparation for the ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup in Sudan. Together with the camps
and trainings with Chinese players is one highlights for this week for me,” he said.

Meanwhile, President of African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF), Khaled El-Salhy believes the Malaysia tourney would provide African teams to shape up for the Olympic Games as well as compete for the continent’s sole slot in the team event.
