    Rita Dominic set for Toronto International Film Festival

    NOLLYWOOD actress, Rita Dominic, will be among the many participants at the 2016 prestigious Toronto International Film Festival representing Nigeria.

    According to a statement released by the actress, she will be taking part in the exclusive premiere of the historic Nigerian movie ’76. The movie which according to report was specially screened by former president Olusegun Obasanjo recently is a story inspired by true events; six years after the civil war in Nigeria.

    Rita Dominic plays the role of a heavily pregnant woman whose life crumbles when the news of her husband’s involvement in a botched military coup hits the headlines.

    The movie also stars Ramsey Nouah,  Chidi Mokeme, and others in the gripping drama set against the backdrop of the attempted 1976 military coup against the government of General Murtala Mohammed. ’76 is directed by Izu Ojukwu and produced by Adonijah Owiriwa and Prince Tonye Princewill.

    The 30-month Nigerian civil war has continued to generate film ideas and the latest is 76, a tale of love, trust, faith and family produced by Africa Magic, in partnership with Adonis Productions and Princewill’s Trust.

    Set six years after the Nigerian civil war, 76 tells the story of a young officer from the Middle Belt who gets entangled in a romantic relationship and eventually marries a beautiful student from the South-Eastern part of Nigeria. Their budding romance is threatened by endless military postings, and they face the ultimate test when news of the soldier’s involvement in a botched coup attempt hits the headlines.

    76 is an adventurous foray into filmmaking in Nigeria,” said Director, M-Net West Africa, Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu.

    “It’s an exciting, compelling storyline that many Nigerians and indeed Africans will relate with. The directing and production quality are top notch, and the themes celebrate values including courage, loyalty, patience, trust and sacrifice. 76takes filmmaking up another level in Nigeria and we at Africa Magic are indeed excited to partner with Adonis Productions and Princewill’s trust in bringing this movie to viewers across Africa.”

    Directed by award winning director, Izu Ojukwu, 76 followed the botched 1976 coup d’etat, and features real life, archived, actual footage that contributes to the movie’s overall authenticity. The movie was also done with approval and support from the Nigerian Army.

    “The movie deals with a range of issues including the plight of the African woman, and the usually invisible pain of a soldier’s wife,” said Ojukwu.

    76 highlights the enduring Nigerian cultural values of courage, resilience, patience, loyalty, faith and family and the nation’s ability to surmount all challenges.”

    76which comes 40 years after the actual events is the result of four years of work by the director and the production duo of Adonis Productions and Princewill’s Trust. It stars Nollywood bigwigs including Rita Dominic, Ramsey Nouah, Chidi Mokeme, Ibinabo Fiberesinma, Ada Ofoegbu, Daniel K Daniel and a host of others.

    76 is a deeply emotional movie, and it resonated deeply with me as I am sure it will do for viewers not just in Nigeria, but around the world,” said Prince Tonye Princewill, the Executive Producer of 76 and a patron of the Nigerian Association of Movie Producers who also thanked the Nigeria Army, M-Net and other sponsors for their support. 76 premieres mid-2016 and thereafter comes to screens across the continent courtesy of Africa Magic.

    Speaking on the Nigerian Army’s involvement in the movie, the Head Civil-Military Affairs Army Head Quarters, Major-General Nicholas Rogers, said: “The military today is in a very different place from where it was in 1976. As the world has evolved, so have we. The relationship between the army and the people is even more critical. Our true strength comes from our collaboration, and nowhere is it better illustrated than in partnerships such as these.”

    Major-General Nicholas Rogers also reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Army Leadership to anything positive that tells the true story.

    At 40, 2015 AMVCA Best Actress and one of the most sought after actresses in Nigeria, Rita Dominic has tried to remain graceful, both in movies and as a brand ambassador.

    The actress was recently spotted during a photo shoot for one of the companies she represents, Zaron Cosmetics; filming ads for their 2016 brands.

    The Glo Ambassador, whose family reside in the United States, despite clocking 40 earlier in the year, that age which they say life begins, has been able to remain flawless with her skin and style statement on the screen and social events.

    With a passion for achieving her goals, the actress was also named the Brand Ambassador for Keystone Bank’s Pink Account in March 2015; an account designed to empower women with entrepreneurial drive and career indication.

    Rita Uchenna Nkem Dominic Waturuocha is a Nigerian actress who won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, in 2012.

    A member of the Royal Waturuocha family of Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area in Imo State, Rita is the youngest of four siblings. She attended the prestigious Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, before heading to the University of Port Harcourt, where she graduated with a BA (Honours) Degree in Theatre Arts in 1999.

    She started performing when she was a child, appearing in school plays and children’s television shows in Imo State. In 1998 she starred in her first movie, A Time to Kill.

    AWARD winning Nollywood actress, Rita Dominic and celebrated actor, Femi Jacobs, are among the cast of a new family movie, The Guest.

    Directed by Christian Olayinka and produced by Foluke Olaniyi of the Banner Films Company, The Guest tells the story of a passionless but dedicated and faithfully married couple who take in an old friend into their apartment. An affair soon begins between the husband and the friend but when his adulterous partner starts to kill members of their household who stands in the way of getting what she wants, the couple realise that they have it all in each other and that their family is worth fighting for.

    Still in its final editing, The Guest according Foluke Olaniyi is a movie to watch out for. The movie, which also stars Chika Chukwu, and Somkele Idahlamah, is expected to hit cinemas before the end of the year.

    Rita Dominic and Genevieve Nnaji are well known as Nigerian style mavens; however Rita Dominic beat her fellow fashionista hands down at Stephanie Linus’s movie premier titled Dry held at Silverbird Galleria last Sunday.

    The sultry diva looked effortlessly stunning in her peach ensemble; a peach cape like blouse atop a matching pair of pale peach palazzo pants, and clutch purse; creating a lovely monochrome silhouette. As a male fan put it, “She looked good enough to eat.”

    Genevieve, on the other hand turned up in a contrasting white mono-strap draped tank top atop a dark coloured peek a-boo skirt, and blue chain strap purse. She lived up to her reputation as Nigeria’s queen of posh brand name  outfits as she classily rocked high street fashion with haute couture, wearing Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and H&M.

    ALTHOUGH their parts together was a stint in The Meeting, a film that won some laurels at the just-concluded Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Award (AMVCA), Rita Dominic and co- actor Femi Jacobs are back in a new flick called The Guest.

    Billed for cinema release across the country soon, the film has the duo playing male and female leads. Packaged as an Audrey Silva Company film project, The Guest is directed by a first timer, Christian Olayinka and produced by Foluke Olaniyi under the platform of Banner Films.

    Other actors of the movie include Somkele Idahlamah and Chika Chukwu.

    AS Christendom begins the Lenten season with Ash Wednesday, it is only apt that Christians live by its tenets. Lent, by its nature, is a period of penance, prayer, sacrifice and charity so, it came as no surprise when Nollywood actress, Rita Dominic, celebrated with women who have lost their husbands. The occasion, called Widows Day Out, took place on Wednesday.

    Powered by Zaron Cosmetics, Widows Day Out was set aside to celebrate, pamper and empower widows in the society.

    An excited Rita took to her Instagram page and posted photographs of herself with the widows and Zaron MD, Mrs. OkeMaduewesi. “Widows Day Out today. Was great seeing them smile and spending time with them! Bless them..#ashwednesday,” she captioned the photo.

    Last year, the makeup brand took love to a different level when they gave 10 widows a fantastic makeover, meals, monetary gifts and other goodies at their head office in Ikoyi, Lagos. To qualify to attend the special occasion, the widows had to provide a basic business plan and present to the cosmetic brand. The exercise is geared towards the financial empowerment and moral support for women who are faced with various challenges in the society.

    The MD Zaron cosmetics, being a widow herself, fully identified with the challenges they faced and has stated that the outing has been made a yearly exercise to fulfill part of Zaron’s corporate social responsibilities.

    It was a convergence of Africans and African-Americans on Saturday, October 25 at the Stafford Centre, Houston Texas, as the third edition of the Golden Icon Academy Movie Awards (GIAMA) held.

    Hosted by comedy merchant, Julius Agwu, the event began with a red carpet, which had some of the biggest Africa’s TV networks in the United States beaming the ceremony live to their audiences.

    The Awards also featured performances from comedians, dancers and musicians who took turns to rock the GIAMA stage. Among them were Seyi Brown, MCPC, Jedi and Mayowa among others.

    Nigerian movies had the highest number of nominations, followed by movies from Ghana. There were also films from South Africa and the Caribbean. Among the Nigerian movies that won laurels at the event are, Iyore with 10 nominations, 30 Days in Atlanta and A Mile from Home with nine nominations each.

    The big winners at this year’s GIAMA are, Eric Aghimien who won Best Director for the movie, A Mile from Home. Rita Dominic and Kanayo O Kanayo (K.O.K) also clinched the Best Actress and Best Actor awards for the movie Iyore and Apaye respectively. Emem Isong, who picked up the plaque on behalf of K.O.K, revealed that Apaye has been the most challenging movie of her career as a producer.

    Other winners at the event include, Ivie Okujaye, Tope Tedela, Tonto Dikeh, Uti Nwachukwu, Robert Peters, Ayo Maku, Ramsey Nouah, Raz Adoti and Paula Obaseki.

    Also, an honorary grand recognition award was presented to Captain Dr. Hosa Wells Okunbo for what organisers described as his unflinching support for African cinema. Represented by Mr. Robert Oyiwa, Okunbo pledged to continually support Africa while also announcing the kick-off of the first 24-hour African TV channel in Canada.

    Other African stars who graced the event were Stella Damasus, Ini Edo, Majid Michel, Juliet Ibrahim, Susan Peters, Lancelot Imaseun, Daniel Ademinokan, Morris K. Sesay, Belinda Effah, Frank Rajah and Alex Ekubo.

    IF there is any movie that touches on the sensitive issues of bureaucracy in public service and love with great technical and professional delivery, it is The Meeting by the delectable actress, Rita Dominic. The film brings to the fore the self-indulgent conduct of the ranks and file in public institutions, which has contributed significantly to the ineptitude of these facilities.

    Set in Lagos and Abuja, it revolves around Makinde Esho (Femi Jacobs), a staffer of a highbrow company in Lagos, whose employer sends to Abuja to win a contract in the Ministry of Lands. He has difficulties seeing the Minister owing to the officiousness of the receptionist, Clara (Rita Dominic), who would not allow visitors into her bosses’ office except she is offered a bribe. Consequently, Femi, a widower, who does not understand the game, stays longer than he has planned and in the process meets a beautiful youth corps member with whom he is head over heels in love.

    In the end, Makinde conquers all. He forces his way into the Minister’s presence, makes his presentation and wins the contract. He also steals the heart of the young lady.
