    Rivers Angels, Remo Stars Ladies are halfway kings in NWFL

    Rivers Angels crawled their way in the final game of the first stanza to end as Group B winners after they dismantled Adamawa Queens 6-0 in Port Harcourt to topple Bayelsa Queens on goals difference after  Matchday 7 of the Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership.

    Remo Stars Ladies also continued with their impressive start to the season after they hammered Nasarawa Amazons 4-0 in Ikenne to finish as Group A halfway Queens with 19 points from seven games and still unbeaten.

    In Port Harcourt, Mary Moses’ hat trick and Peace Effiong’s brace fuelled Rivers Angels 6-0 home win over Adamawa Queens at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt. The emphatic win ensure that the Jewels of Rivers have overhauled the enormous goals difference between them and nearest rivals Bayelsa Queens with both teams on the same 17 points.

    In Lagos, Bayelsa Queens easily thrashed FC Robo Queens 3-1 with Alaba Olabiyi’s double the deciding factor in the game. Bayelsa Queens dropped to the second spot with 17 points while FC Robo are in fifth spot with 10 points.

    In Abuja, Naija Ratels needed a stoppage time goal to beat Benue Queens. The goal came off the boot of Sofia Bankole. The victory has taken Ratels to the fourth spot with 10 points in Group B.

    Former League champions, Delta Queens,  pipped Ibom Angels 1-0 to jump to the third spot with 10 points while Ibom Angels are 7th with six points.

    In Group A, Edo Queens pummelled Ekiti Queens 3-0 in Benin City to remain within touching distance of group leaders, Remo Stars Ladies with 17 points.

    In Owerri, Heartland Queens secured their first season’s win after they battered Confluence Queens 3-0 while in Lagos, Dannaz Ladies suffered a surprise 4-1 defeat to Abia Angels. Mary Lucky’s three goals in the game has moved her to six goals from as many games.

    With the completion of the first stanza of the NWFL Premiership, the league will go on recess until March 19th.

    In a league tie between two unbeaten sides in the Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership tie in Group A , Edo Queens and Remo Stars Ladies battles to a 1-1 draw in Benin’s Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium while another top drawer fixture between Rivers Angels and FC Robo Queens ended 4-2 in Port Harcourt in favour of the home team as the season entered Matchday Three yesterday.

    In Group A it was Edo Queens that netted first through Esther Moses in the second minute of first half stoppage time but Remo Stars Ladies levelled proceedings through Olamide Bolaji barely five minutes into the second half and it was how the game ended.

    Despite the home draw, Edo Queens are still top of Group A on goals difference with seven points from three games while Remo Stars Ladies followed closely in second spot with seven points also.

    Ekiti Queens thrashed Dannaz Ladies 2-0 to record their second win of the season through the goals of Seun Fakunle and Tobi Sarafa in the 36th and 55th minutes. The victorious side are now third on the log with six points while Dannaz Ladies slipped to the sixth spot with three points.

    In Anyigba, Confluence Queens continued their woeful season performance with a 1-0 home loss to Nasarawa Amazons. Olusola Shobowale notched the game’s decider in the 29th minute.

    Nasarawa Amazons are now fourth on the spot with six points but Confluence Queens are rooted to the bottom with zero point after three games.

    In Owerri, Heartland Queens secured their first point of the season in a goalless draw against Abia Angels in the latest Oriental derby which served as dress rehearsal to the other Oriental derby which comes up today in Aba between Enyimba and Heartland .

    The Owerri Landladies tried as they could buy they were unable to penetrate through a water tight defence of  Abia Angels who were led to the game by former Heartland Queens Assistant coach, Adanna Nwaneri.

    Heartland Queens are seventh with a point while Abia Angels moved to the fifth spot with four points.

    In Group B, Bayelsa Queens walloped Benue Queens 5-1 in Lafia with Amblessed Ogbonnaya scoring a brace. The 2022 NWFL Premiership champions are back to the top because of the emphatic away win. They have seven points from three games but Benue Queens are last in the group with no points.

    In Gombe, Adamawa Queens got their first win of the season in their 3-0 thrashing of 2023 NWFL Premiership champions, Delta Queens with Afensimi Omon’s three goals. She becomes the first player to score a hat trick in the ongoing season.

    It was dubbed the game of the week and it didn’t lack anything as Rivers Angels and FC Robo Queens locked horns in Port Harcourt.

    The home team won the game 4-2 but the visitors from Lagos didn’t go down without a fight.

    Rivers Angels remain in second spot with seven points from three games while FC Robo Queens dropped to the third spot from the first because of the loss. They have six points.

    In Abuja, Naija Ratels recovered from a goal down to beat Ibom ‘Angels 2-1.

    Ugobest Osuji drew Ibom Angels into an early lead when she struck in the sixth minute but two late goals through Glory Sunday and Tea-Bee Rita in the 72nd and 83rd minutes settled the energy sapping encounter.

    Fashionable Abuja landladies, Naija Ratels will go up against experienced campaigners and former winners Rivers Angels in the grand finale of the women’s version of this year’s President Federation Cup competition.

    Both teams assured their place in the grand finale on Sunday morning, with Rivers Angels edging Delta Queens 2-1 in Awka and Ratels stretched to sudden-death in 7-6 penalty shootout win in Enugu, after both teams were tied at 2-2 in regulation time.

    In the men’s final, Abia Warriors will take on El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri.

    NWFL Premiership Super 6: Rivers Angels, two others earn first wins

    Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt, Confluence Queens and Bayelsa Queens all secured their first win of the ongoing Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership Super Six playoff taking place in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

    The second match of the NWFL Super Six match day two witnessed a fierce battle between two sides who shared victory at their various grounds in the regular season. Rivers Angels beat Edo Queens 2-1 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium before the Benin girls won 4-1 in the reverse fixture.

    Edo Queens went into the game with fine form on the backdrop of their blistering performance that saw them humiliate Confluence Queens 5-1 on match day 1.

    But just 11 minutes into the game, Rivers Angels drew the first blood courtesy of Florence Alexander — Rivers Angels were rewarded a free kick after a player was hacked down and centre-back, Florence Alexander stepped up to kick. Edo Queens goalkeeper, Ijeoma Uzoma fumbled with the kick as the ball went through her hands into the net.

    Rivers Angels pushed their Benin counterparts further and their efforts proved productive when Uroko Elizabeth was forced to an error by the Jewel of Rivers pressure, to turn Okpe Blessing’s cross into her net.

    Emem Essien got one back for Edo Queens in the 32nd  minute and this time, it was another goalkeeper error from Rivers Angels goalkeeper, Ademola Morufa. The goalkeeper couldn’t deal with Chioma Moses’ cross from the right wing and Emem Essien wasted no time in sliding home for Edo Queens — her third in the competition.

    The first half ended 2-1, though Edo Queens could have levelled things up, but the forwards couldn’t do justice to their final ball. It was how the game ended in the second half as well.

    In another game played also at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, Mercy Itimi struck late in matchday two of the NWFL Super Six to give Bayelsa Queens a win over Nasarawa Amazons on matchday two of the 2024 NWFL Super Six.

    Just when fans thought the game would end in a draw, Mercy Itimi’s goal decided the tie for the Prosperity Girls.

    A fine build-up from behind by Bayelsa Queens resulted in the needed goal. Mercy Omokwo drove into the box from the left flank and tried an effort against onrushing Nasarawa’s goalie. The ball ricocheted and fell into the path of a tightly marked Mercy Itimi who tapped in from close range.

    The result means that Bayelsa Queens are back in contention for the league title, now with 4 points. The Domo Okara girls will next face Nasarawa Amazons on match day 3. The match is slated for noon at the Samson Siasia stadium, tomorrow (Wednesday).

    In the third game, Confluence Queens recovered from their 5-1 loss to Edo Queens in the opening fixture on Saturday to beat Heartland Queens 2-0 yesterday through two late goals.

    The first half ended goalless but Confluence Queens shot into the lead in the 76th minute from the penalty spot through Merit Offor before Feranmi Odutade’s header flew past Uchenna Chukwu three minutes from full time for the Kogi side second goal.

    At the end of Matchday two, Rivers Angels are ahead on by virtue of better goals scored with plus one and  four points. Bayelsa Queens are second with four points as well while Edo Queens are third with three points. Confluence Queens are fourth with three points while Nasarawa Amazons are fifth with a point. Heartland Queens are last with a point as well.

    Today is observed as rest day while hostilities continue tomorrow with Matchday Three fixtures.

    NWFL Premiership: Heartland Queens, Rivers Angels lead at half-way mark

    Heartland Queens and Rivers Angels have ended the first stanza of the Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership as half-way leaders in their respective groups after final round of games were played yesterday.

    In Group A, Heartland Queens were beaten 2-1 at the Pantami Stadium, Gombe by Adamawa Queens who came back from a goal down to stun the Owerri side.

    Despite the loss, Heartland Queens ended the first round as first in Group A with 11 points and a superior goals difference of plus two even though three other teams in the group: Nasarawa Amazons, Dannaz Ladies and Confluence Queens also ended the round with 11 points each but are all separated by goals difference or superior goals scored.

    In other group A games, Nasarawa Amazons were pipped 1-0 in Warri by Royal Queens; Dannaz Ladies beat Abia Angels 1-0 through Augustina Unamgba while Naija Ratels were 1-0 better than Confluence Queens in Abuja.

    In Group B, Rivers Angels usurped Edo Queens to finish the first stanza in first spot with 14 points from seven games. They beat FC Robo Queens 2-1 in Lagos to achieve the feat.

    Motunrayo Ezekiel put the Port Harcourt side in the ascendancy in the seventh minute for her fifth goal of the season in Lagos but Mary Salami equalised for the home team in the 38th minute. Suliyat Hassan bagged the winning goal in the 62nd minute.

    The defeat saw FC Robo Queens slip to the fourth spot with 11 points behind Bayelsa Queens (12 points), who thrashed Edo Queens 3-0 through Chinyere Igboamalu’s hat-trick; and Edo Queens are in third spot with 12 points.

    Remo Stars Ladies smashed Ekiti Queens 4-1 to hold on to the fifth spot with nine points at the expense of reigning champions, Delta Queens who despite beating Sunshine Queens 3-1 are in sixth spot with nine points also but with inferior goals difference.

    Ekiti Queens and Sunshine Queens are in the seventh and eighth positions with five and four points in that order.

  • Aisha Falode congratulates Rivers Angels

    The Chairperson of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), Aisha Falode, was full of praises for the players and officials of Rivers Angels FC of Port Harcourt, for retaining the Aiteo Cup Women’s title after defeating hard fighting Ibom Angels in the final of the competition played on Tuesday at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

    Rivers Angels beat Ibom Angels 1-0 to record a second straight victory against the Akwa Ibom State-owned team in the Aiteo Cup final. Rivers Angels defeated the same opponent in last year’s final.

    Falode, who watched the final live in Yenagoa, commended the coach Godwin Okon-tutored Angels for going the extra mile to prove to Nigerians that they were the better team.

    “The two teams have shown consistency from 2017 till date, and they are also in contention for the Nigeria Women Premier League Super Four, where the true winners of the 2018 league season will be determined after an abridged format.

    “I want to tell Nigerian football lovers that, they will see a more improved women’s football next season after the NWFL must have articulated the development partnership with the LaLiga Women’s Football Department.”

  • NWFL: Rivers Angels hopeful of trophy despite string of draws

    Rivers Angels FC  says it hopes to retain the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) back-to-back despite string of draws in the first stanza of the season.

    Edwin Okon, Technical Adviser of the club, said in Port Harcourt on Friday that they would work hard to retain the title when the second round of the league begins on June 7.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the club played six matches in the first stanza; won three and drew three.

    Okon in a statement, said despite the team’s failure to win all the matches, he was satisfied with his girls’ performances.

    “If you check all the teams in the first round, you can see that almost everyone lost one or two matches, but we didn’t.

    “We tried as much as we could to get points on the road and we nearly won away as teams had to force us to draws at their own backyard.

    “The matches we drew were games we could have won, but we didn’t. I’m happy with the way the girls played in the first round,” he said.

    According to Okon, a huge task awaits the ‘Jewels of Rivers’ in the second round.

    The former Super Falcons’ gaffer said, “I am not worried. I am looking forward to maintaining our position in the second round.

    “If we can get a level playing ground, then you can be sure we would win our group.” he said.

    Rivers Angels would kick-start her second round of the NWFL when they play  Bayelsa Queens on June 7 in Nembe.

     

  • Winners Cup: Rivers Angels, Nasarawa Amazons light up Abuja

     

    Federation Cup winners Rivers Angels will take on Nasarawa Amazons in the Winners Cup match of the Nigeria Women Football League at the FIFA Goal Project, National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday.

    A statement from the secretariat of the NWFL and signed by the Executive Secretary, Mr. Ayo Abdulrahaman clarified that the match, earlier scheduled for Wednesday, 18th January 2017 had been moved to Saturday, 21st January, to start at 3pm on that day.

    The Winners Cup is the women’s version of the NPFL’s Super 4 mini-tournament, and is the official season –closing event of the Women’s League.

    Rivers Angels FC is regarded as perhaps the strongest women football club in the land, though the girls from Lafia can never be pushovers for any team. Both teams regularly supply players to all categories of the National Teams, from the U17 to the senior team, Super Falcons.

    2016 Federation Cup final: Oshoala presents jerseys to Rivers Angels, Bayelsa Queens

    Arsenal Ladies and Super Falcons’ striker, Assisat Oshoala made a special presentation of her London club jerseys to Rivers Angels and Bayelsa Queens in the Federation Cup Women’s final decided yesterday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium,Surulere,Lagos.

    The jerseys were presented on behalf of Oshoala before the kick off of the women’s final by General Manager, Marketing of HS Media Group, Adelola Chu-Osakwe to the captains of both teams, Charity John for Rivers Angels and Esther Udegbe for Bayelsa Queens. The London-based star, who is the official Face of the 2016 Women’s Federation Cup final reiterated that the motive of the presentation is to encourage female football in Nigeria and ginger the female players to reach for greater heights.

    “I’m delighted and honoured to be the Face of the 2016 Women’s Federation Cup final in Nigeria. This presentation of my Arsenal club jerseys to the two teams in the final is a way of giving back to the system that produced me,” Oshaola said.

    Women’s Federation Cup: Rivers Angels crowned champions

    Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt have emerged the winner of this year’s Women’s Federation Cup after defeating Bayelsa Queens FC in the final played at the Teslim Balogun stadium, Lagos.

    Rivers Angels won 5-3 on penalties after 1-1 at the regulation time.

    Interestingly, it was Bayelsa Queens that took the lead after just 18minutes as Rafiat Sule put them in front but Rivers Angels drew level before half-time courtesy Osinachi Ohale.

    The second half was tight as both side failed to create any more openings and it ended 1-1 during regulation time.

    In the penalty shootout, Lilian Cole missed a vital kick for Bayelsa Queens which handed advantage to Rivers Angels and Amarachi Ojinma stepped up and blasted the ball past the goalkeeper to hand Rivers Angels the win.

    Rivers Angels have now won the Federations Cup for a record seventh time.
