JUST IN: Rivers Assembly directs Chief Judge to raise committee to probe Fubara, deputy

The Rivers State House of Assembly on Friday reconvened and issued a directive to the Chief Judge of the state to establish a seven-member committee to begin the process of removing the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

The House reconvened after waiting in vain for seven days, which expired on Thursday, for the governor and his deputy to respond to the allegations of misconduct leveled against them.

At the plenary the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, cited relevant sections of the constitution and said the process of removing the governor and his deputy would continue whether with or without their responses.

He said, “Distinguished colleagues, let me read what is provided in the constitution. It states within 14 days of the presentation of the notice to the Speaker of the House of Assembly, whether or not any statement was made by the holder of the office in reply to the allegation contained in the notice, the House of Assembly shall resolve by motion, without any delay, whether or not the allegation shall be investigated.

“Pursuant to this section of the Constitution, I secretly and repeatedly atedly put this to vote on that note. Members who  support that the notice of allegations of gross misconduct against His Excellency Fubara, to be investigated, indicate by raising their hands.”

After counting the votes, Amaewhule said all the members voted in the affirmative.

He said, “Distinguished colleagues by this voting, the Rivers State House of Assembly has resolved that the investigations against allegations of gross misconduct leveled against His Excellency the governor of Rivers State shall proceed. By virtue of Section 188 subsection 5, I will ensure that the resolution of this House is immediately communicated to the Chief Judge.”

Diaspora professionals condemn Rivers Assembly’s impeachment moves against Fubara, Odu

Nigerian professionals in the diaspora have expressed strong support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, warning that renewed impeachment proceedings against the duo constitute a destabilising political agenda that undermines democratic governance in the oil-rich state.

In a statement released on Monday, the Nigerian Diaspora Professionals for Democratic Stability (NDPDS) described the impeachment efforts by the Rivers State House of Assembly as an abuse of legislative power stemming from the protracted political rivalry between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

The statement was signed by Dr. Chukwudi Nnamani, president of the group, and Mr. Adewale Ogunsiwaju, its secretary.

“The impeachment threats against Governor Fubara have become cyclical, predictable, and politically motivated. This is no longer about oversight or constitutional accountability; it is about who controls Rivers State’s political structure and resources. A democracy cannot function when impeachment is weaponised as a tool of supremacy rather than a last-resort constitutional remedy,” the group said.

NDPDS added that the crisis in Rivers State traces back to the breakdown in the political relationship between Fubara and Wike shortly after the governor assumed office, noting that legislative actions since then have largely reflected factional interests rather than public welfare.

“It is impossible to ignore the context. The House of Assembly has been deeply polarised, with legislative actions reflecting allegiance to external political authority rather than the electorate. No democracy should tolerate a situation where a sitting governor is subjected to perpetual threats of removal for refusing to submit to political godfathers,” the group said.

The diaspora professionals warned that continued impeachment attempts could undermine governance, scare investors and deepen institutional instability in a state critical to Nigeria’s economic survival.

“Rivers State is not a playground for political brinkmanship. It is a strategic economic nerve centre, and governance cannot be held hostage to unresolved elite power struggles. Every impeachment threat sends a negative signal to investors, development partners and citizens who expect stability, not chaos,” the statement added.

The group also defended Fubara’s conduct in office, arguing that policy disagreements or political realignments do not meet the constitutional threshold of gross misconduct.

“Disagreement is not a crime. Independence is not misconduct. A governor asserting constitutional authority should not be treated as a rebel. The threshold for impeachment is deliberately high because the framers of the constitution understood the danger of legislative overreach,” the group noted.

The statement added that the diaspora community is watching the developments with concern, warning that repeated impeachment plots erode confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

“When impeachment becomes routine rather than exceptional, democracy is weakened. What is happening in Rivers should worry every Nigerian, because it sets a precedent where electoral mandates can be endlessly undermined through legislative pressure,” the statement said.

The group called on political leaders, the judiciary, and stakeholders to prioritise dialogue and constitutional restraint, urging the Rivers assembly to step back from actions that could plunge the state into a deeper crisis.

“The mandate of the people must be respected. Rivers State deserves governance, not perpetual political warfare,” the statement added.

Rivers Assembly accuses executives of plotting to halt legislative duties

The Rivers State House of Assembly has alleged a plot by individuals linked to the executive arm to secure a court order aimed at stopping the legislature from carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.

In a statement issued by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Dr. Enemi Alabo George, the Assembly claimed that the plan involved obtaining an ex parte order from a state High Court sitting outside Port Harcourt.

The House dismissed the alleged move as futile, arguing that it would amount to an attempt to undermine the 1999 Constitution.

The lawmakers maintained that such action would be unconstitutional, citing Sections 272(3) and 188(10), alongside relevant Court of Appeal decisions.

They added that office holders who had been served notices of allegations of gross misconduct should address the issues raised rather than seeking judicial shortcuts.

George said, “The Rivers State House of Assembly has received information of plots by certain persons to utilize some Rivers State High Courts, especially outside the Port Harcourt Judicial division, to issue ex parte orders to illegally stop the Rivers State House of Assembly from performing its constitutional duties.

“These persons are fully aware of the provisions of section 272(3) of the Constitution which states that ‘subject to the provisions of section 251 and other provisions of the constitution, the Federal High Court shall have jurisdiction to hear and determine the question as to whether the term of office of a member of the House of Assembly of a state, Governor or Deputy Governor has ceased or become vacant.

“Also, section 188(10) states that ‘no proceedings or determination of the panel or of the House of Assembly or any matter relating to such proceedings or determination shall be entertained or questioned in any court.

“These persons are also fully aware of judicial pronouncements on this matter, especially recently at the Court of Appeal on a matter involving a similar ex parte order by a Rivers State High Court contrary to section 272(3) of the constitution. A word is enough for the wise.”

The Assembly called on persons behind the move to exercise restraints and refrain from actions initially in accordance with the constitution.

The lawmakers said, “Therefore, with the leave of the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, I call on those concerned to exercise restraint and refrain from acts inimical to the Constitution and the rule of law.

“All that is required is for the office holders who have already been duly served with the Notice of Allegations of Gross Misconduct to respond to them item by item rather than deploy subterranean moves to subvert the law or use proxies to malign members of the Rivers State House of Assembly in the media.

“We remain committed to the Constitution and the rule of law and may God bless our dear Rivers State and Nigeria.”

Rivers Assembly probes Renaissance Energy’s alleged neglect of oil spills in community

Rivers Assembly has ordered a probe into the allegations that an oil firm, Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited, neglected oil spills that devastated B-Dere community in Gokana Local Government Area of the state.

The House raised concerns over the development following a petition written against the company by the community through their Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Hamilton Odom & Co.

The petition was signed by ESV Hamilton Odom and presented on the floor of the House by the Deputy Speaker.

Speaker Martins Amaewhule referred the petition to the House Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions, which is Chaired by Dr. Enemi Alabo George.”

The community in the petition recalled that on May 7th, 2025, an oil spill occurred along the 24 Ogale-Bomu Pipeline criss crossing their area.

The petitioners explained that a report of the joint team officials from the Rivers State Ministry of Environment, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) including representatives from the impacted community established the cause of the leak as equipment failure.

They said: “The spill had a devastating impact on the vegetation health leading to stress, defoliation and death. The toxic hydrocarbons in the oil also penetrated plant tissues, disrupting physiological functions and impairing water and nutrient intake. This resulted in stunted growth, plant mortality and hindered regeneration particularly affecting young plants and seedlings.

“The spill also contaminated underground water and disrupted economic activities such as farming leading to loss of income and livelihoods and causing psychological trauma and stress that can have long term effects on mental health and well-being of the people”.

The community said despite the adverse effects of the incident, the oil company had neither made an attempt to clean up the affected areas nor paid any form of compensation to the affected people.

“More worrisome is the indifference and silence of the company over all matters relating to spill after the initial meeting between the representatives of the company and the community to agree on a fair or adequate compensation sum ended in a deadlock”, the petitioners said.

The community appealed to the House of Assembly to address the matter with utmost urgency insisting that Renaissance should bear sole responsibility for the spill since it resulted from an equipment failure.

They requested the lawmakers to hold Renaissance Africa Energy Limited accountable and responsible for the environmental damage caused by the spill.

The community demanded immediate appraisal and payment of compensation for their economic losses, damage to their livelihoods and the environmental degradation caused by the company’s negligence

They also asked the lawmakers to engage the company to ensure a comprehensive clean up, remediation and restoration of the affected land, underground water and environment.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions, Dr. Enemi Alabo George, who received the petition, said his committee would give it speedy consideration.

Rivers Assembly applauds Tinubu for granting pardon to Saro-Wiwa, others

The Rivers State House of Assembly reconvened on Tuesday for its second plenary after the emergency rule and applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting pardon to the late environmentalist, Mr. Ken Saro-Wiwa, and eight others popularly called the Ogoni-nine.

The lawmakers conveyed their commendation through a motion moved by the Deputy Speaker, Dumle Maol, representing Gokana Constituency, and three other members from the Ogoni extraction.

The movers of the motion called for commendation for the President and lauded Tinubu for posthumously conferring national honours on the Ogoni-13.

Members took turns to praise the President, saying Tinubu displayed his goodwill through the gesture.

Commenting on the motion, the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, emphasised the importance of peace and said that the fatherly initiative of the president would go a long way in assuaging the Ogoni people.

He said the Ogoni people, for about three decades, had been in pain because of the loss of their 13 prominent personalities, and commended the president for the noble gesture.

The house also deliberated on the recent flash floods that led to the death of two teenagers at Eligbolo, a community in Obio/Akpor Local Government of the State.

Moving the motion on the need for immediate action to be taken by the relevant ministries and agencies to stem the flash floods, the member representing Port Harcourt Constituency 3, HoAzeru Opara, identified the lack of frequent and proper desilting of canals and drains in the state as the cause of the flood and called for urgent actions to mitigate the situation.

The lawmakers mourned the unfortunate death of the teenage brothers at Eligbolo and called on the authorities to take drastic steps to avert future occurrences.

Amaewhule recounted the moments leading to the death of the two teenagers and regretted that such could happen in Rivers.

He called on the Ministry of Environment and that of Urban and Regional Planning to draw a plan on how to desilt the canals and drains in Port Harcourt and its environs.

He lamented the ugly situation and directed the House Committee on Environment and Urban Planning to quickly put in place measures to address the situation.

  • We are under pressure to implicate Ehie in Rivers Assembly complex burning, say ex-suspects

We are under pressure to implicate Ehie in Rivers Assembly complex burning, say ex-suspects

…our ordeals in detention, by acquitted

Four former suspects in the bombing of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex have raised alarm over renewed pressure to falsely accuse the suspended Chief of Staff to the Government House, Edison Ehie, as the mastermind of the attack.

The youths—Chime Ezebalike, Kenneth Kpasa, Prince Oladele Lukman, and MacPherson Olumini—were initially arrested and detained for over six months before being discharged by a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt.

Speaking on behalf of the group in Port Harcourt on Monday, Ezebalike alleged that some top members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State had approached them with offers to change their original statements and implicate Ehie in the incident.

He specifically claimed that a PDP leader from Obio/Akpor local government met with them, urging them to align their testimonies with the recent statement made by former Rivers State Head of Service, George Nwaeke, who linked Ehie to the arson.

He said: “Even after our ordeal and when we thought we could return to normal life, only a few days ago, one of us was called by a PDP leader in Obio/Akpor, to come and meet with one of their leaders.

“Upon further prodding he said they were reaching out to us to persuade us to re-write our story in order to implicate Edison Ehie as the sponsor or mastermind of the fire incident at the Assembly complex as a follow-up to former Head of Service, George Nwaeke’s press briefing in Abuja.

“This has prompted us to speak out, as we do not want to be part of any nefarious act especially after the torture we faced.”

Ezebalike recounted their ordeals while in detention saying they endured six to eight months of torture in the hands of security agencies and other political actors following the burning of the Assembly complex on 29th October, 2023.

He said that they were arrested because of their relationship with Ehie confirming that while he, Kenneth and Oladele are known associates of Ehie and Sokari Goodboy, MacPherson was allegedly an unfortunate victim of mere proximity.

He said: “For six to eight months we endured an unjust, harrowing experience in the hands of security agencies and political actors. Our offence was because we refused to frame individuals including the Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Government, Ehie as masterminds of the Rivers State House of Assembly inferno.

“Starting from December 2023 we: Chime Ezebalike, Kenneth Kpasa, Prince Oladele Lukman, and MacPherson Olumini were individually and collectively subjected to arrest, intimidation, physical assault, psychological torture. All of this happened between December 5, 2023, and January 16, 2024.

“At some point, we were offered bribes in exchange for our freedom even though it was clear that we had committed no offence that warranted our being arrested and detained.

“Our ordeal began with the arbitrary arrest of Oladele Lukman on December 5, 2023. On December 16, Chime and MacPherson were violently apprehended at Ogbakiri Junction along the East-West Road while returning from a funeral in Ahoada. On January 5, 2024, Kenneth Kpasa was forcefully taken in GRA, Port Harcourt, by a convoy of no fewer than three Hilux vans.

“We were blindfolded and taken to the Federal Intelligence Response Team (F-IRT) unit along the Eastern Bypass in Port Harcourt, under the false pretense that the vehicle we were travelling in was stolen.

“It was later revealed that this was a ruse intended to force us into implicating Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie in three serious allegations: The murder of Supol Bako Angbashim; an assassination attempt on Martins Amaewhule and the burning of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex

“At the Federal-Intelligence Response Team facility, multiple attempts were made to coerce us into making false confessions. We were denied access to legal representation and, when permitted to write statements, were stopped midway for not writing what they wanted—statements that falsely implicated Edison Ehie and others.”

Ezebalike, claimed that a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly arrived with a uniformed officer and personally pressured them to implicate Ehie in the Assembly complex fire incident and when they resisted, they were subjected to beatings, starvation, and psychological torture.

He said that days later, the same lawmaker and another politician returned with a bribe offer of money and a fully paid trip to Ghana or any country of their choice with their families, in exchange for implicating Ehie but they rejected the offer, showcasing their commitment to telling the truth.

He added that he and MacPherson were forcibly transferred to Abuja, where they faced another round of inhumane treatment adding that Kpasa was also subjected to brutal experiences in Port Harcourt and later moved to Abuja, where he was offered ₦200million and a trip to Ghana for him and his family to falsely implicate Ehie.

He said: “On December 19, 2023, Chime and MacPherson were forcibly transferred to Abuja by road and arrived on December 20 to yet another round of inhuman treatment.

“Kenneth Kpasa, also subjected to a brutal experience in Port Harcourt, was later moved to Abuja. In his case, the same bribe, ₦200 million and a trip to Ghana for him and his family.

“Shockingly, security agents even instructed another detainee to identify Kenneth as an arsonist in exchange for his own release. Kenneth later identified this man, Donald, by his voice. The same individual, according to the late Supol Bako’s girlfriend, used to deliver food to the deceased. Donald confessed to Kenneth that he was pressured by the police to falsely frame him.

“Due to deteriorating health, vomiting, high blood pressure, and fever, MacPherson was released on January 16, 2024. Shortly after, other suspects were brought into custody on new, unrelated allegations tied to the murder of Supol Bako.

“Despite our innocence, the charges against us inexplicably grew from 3 to 7. We were remanded in Kuje Correctional Facility for six months. The case was eventually transferred to the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt due to jurisdictional issues.

“Finally, in November 2024, after almost a year of suffering, the charges against us were dismissed. It was a silent admission of the grave injustice we suffered.”
