Panic as Rivers community protests Shell’s waste water

Residents of Rumuibekwe Community, Unachukwu Avenue in Obio/Akpor Local government of Rivers State have protested what they described as deadly odour from a drain allegedly constructed by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to channel their waste-water and other chemicals.

The residents who claimed that four children in the area have been hospitalised for various infections and diseases emanating from the polluted drain said they have taken their matter to Rivers State environmental Sanitation and other right groups that could fight for their right.

Chief Amadi Owhor, one of the residents in the area whose two-years-old son was hospitalised, said their protest was to officially inform the public of their plight before it is late.

He said in spite of the children that have been hospitalised, more children and adults have been frequently visiting hospital for one illness or the other on a weekly basis.

He threatened that the community would mobilise against SPDC if they refused to find a lasting solution to the polluted drain, adding that the residents of the area have decided to break the long silence and fight for the right and life of members of the community.

“The bad odour is killing us on daily basis, we can no longer bear it anymore that was why we invited the press to assist us create awareness on this issue. As I’m talking to you now four children from this community have been hospitalised because of the offensive odour and mosquitoes bite”

Another resident of the area, Mr. Martins Ogbole said he was surprised that SPDC has showed less concern about the issue after several efforts made to call on their attention.

He said many residents who build very close to the drain are now considering moving out of the area due to the bad odour.

Ogbole said: “We are human being and we have the right to life and safe environment, as I’m talking to you now this environment is not safe. The drain transports the waste-water from Shell Residential Area connecting Unachukwu Avenue and other streets in the community something urgent must be done to save people from dying.”

Mr. Aban Sampson whose building is facing the drain said, his family has decided to permanently lock the windows because of mosquitoes and bad odour from the drain.

He called on the Rivers State government to intervene, stressing that the authorities concerned should apply chemical that could dilute the bad odour and maintain the drain regularly to ensure a safe and healthy environment.

When contacted, Mr. Joseph Obari of the Public Relation Department, SPDC over the issue, he said the company is investigating the issue and promised to get back to the reporter at the appropriate time.  However, he was unable to reply or get back to this reporter as at the press time.

  • Rivers community protests plot to take its land

Residents of Koko Ama community in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of Rivers State have protested an alleged plan by some people to forcefully take over their land.

The protesters blocked a section of the Eastern Bypass to Marine Base Road yesterday to show their dissatisfaction with the action of the suspected “owner” of the land, Mr. Bola Afolabi, in tandem with some officials of the Rivers State Ministry of Lands as well as the police.

The Koko Ama community Chairman, Elder Ateke Obianime, who addressed the protesters, said his people would resist attempts to take over their land.

The reason, Obianime said, was that the land was marked for school and markets.

He recalled that the crisis started in 2014, when some tenants from the community were served with a quit notice by a Port Harcourt law firm without disclosing the identity of its clients.

Obianime noted that while the community was on the verge of replying to the quit notice through its lawyers, another letter was received from the Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Rukpokwu, inviting some residents to a meeting.

The community leader alleged that while the community was preparing for the meeting, SARS invaded the community with bulldozers and destroyed property worth millions of naira.

He added: “Men of SARS, on December 31, 2014, came to the community in company of Mr. Bola Afolabi with bulldozers and workers. They started demolishing the property on the community’s land earmarked for a school and a market.”

Obianime also said as the residents were trying to get over the demolition of their property, they received a report from the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Chief Dee Amiofori, saying the land belonged to Mr. Oroko Kinika.

The crown prince of Koko Ama community, Prince Frank Hezekiah Koko, corroborated Obianime’s story.

He said the land belonged to Koko Ama, which paid relevant fees and obtained a government’s cash receipt number 744300.

According to him, a government’s White Paper, dated December 23, 1999, granted the community title over the piece of land.

Koko urged Afolabi and officials of the Ministry of Lands to leave the land alone to the community to avoid a breakdown of law and order.

The prince urged the governor to investigate the activities of the ministry’s officials.

Afolabi described those claiming ownership of the land as criminals.

He said nobody could take what does not belong to him in an era of integrity.

Police spokesman Ahmed Mohammed, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the command was not aware of the matter.

Amiofori could not be reached last night for comments.

  • Rivers community seeks end to insecurity

The Orochiri Kingdom in Ikwerre ethnicity nationality has called on the Rivers State governor- elect Chief Nyesom Wike to ensure that security, infrastructural development and human capital development are among the priorities of his government.

Orochiri, one of the ancient kingdoms in Diobu, seeks security and the empowerment of its youths that could define the community as a metropolitan city.

The community organised a feast to celebrate Wike in Port Harcourt.

Speaking at the event, the heir- apparent to the throne of Orochiri kingdom, Prince Kalagbor Confidence Wordu said his kingdom decided to set agenda for the incoming government of Rivers State as to make the government know what the people want.

He noted that Wike must do everything possible to ensure that the resources are utilised for  the interest of  the people and not for the selfish interest of some politicians.

“First and foremost my kingdom is very happy with the victory of Chief Nyesom Wike, who is now the governor -elect. This kingdom has a tradition that is why we are gathering here today to host this victory party for the governor elect.

“We want this government to fight insecurity; there are a lot of hoodlums in Port Harcourt, infrastructural decay and lack of human capital development. The outgoing government has tried their best but Wike must try hard to initiate policies that will bring a real change to Rivers State.”

Rivers community threatens polls boycott for lack of devt

The residents of sunlight estate in Umuegbule community of Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State are not happy with the government. They described lack of government’s presence in the area as “intentional abandonment” and are threatening to boycott the March 28 and April 11 general elections unless they are assuranced that their plight would improve.

During a protest last week, property owners in the area narrated how they are developing the area without government’s assistance.  They said despite the huge revenue the local government has been collecting from the occupants of the area nothing much has been done to improve the condition.

The President of the Estate, Prince Iyke Nwkeji said the estate was a bush when they relocated to the area due to high cost of rent in Port Harcourt metropolis. He said government has not done anything in the area rather it was the efforts of the landlords that made them to have access roads and streets, light and water.

He said, “We came here to build a house of our own because we could no longer cope with incessant increase of house rents in Port Harcourt city. Even a plot of land in Port Harcourt was on the high side. So when we came here the place was better and affordable. Today you can see that many people are now relocating here because we have made a sacrifice to develop the area, though we still have challenges facing us.

one of the streets being constructed by the landlords“The major challenges now which we have been begging the local government and the state government is how to assist us tar the roads and streets.  We have done the right thing by creating those roads. It is left for the government who are collecting revenue in the area to come and assist us. This area is part of Rivers State, I don’t see the reason why government will abandoned us here without any government presence. You need to visit us here during the raining season to see how the people of the area are suffering.

“On the effort to end flood in the area, we have contributed close to N10million; constructing water reserve in the area because when it rains even vehicles will find it difficult to drive out, school children will be forced to stay back at home. That is the situation we find ourselves, we are tired of asking people to contribute it is not easy collecting the money from residents.  In fact, some people in the area don’t comply with excuses that they don’t have. And you can’t force somebody who doesn’t have to pay a levy.”

Mrs. Chiyere Nduka, one of the residents of the area said there problem is flood, “if government could help us with this yearly nightmare experience we will be happy. Our problem here is flood. When it rains the whole place will be flooded including people’s compound. This major road leading to the   express is the worst, we thank the youths in the area who sometimes volunteered to cross school children out of the water during this period. We want government to assist us so that we could enjoy the presence of government in the area.”

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Estate, Mr. Okey Obianagha said many politicians have been visiting them and promising to come to their aid yet none of their promises have been fulfilled. He noted that this time around the residents of the area would boycott the elections if there is no sign of seriousness on the side of the candidates campaigning in the area.

“We wrote several letters to the chairman of Etche Local Government, we also wrote a letter to the Ministry of Works, copied to Rivers State government. One thing is certain, we have our Permanent Voters Card (PVC) so will decide whether to cast our votes or not. We are tired of unfulfilled promises.”

  • Foundation brings smile to war-torn Rivers community

Foundation brings smile to war-torn Rivers community

Ogbakiri in Emuoha Local Government Area of Rivers State is one of the war-torn communities of the oil-rich state. It has a history of incessant clashes, ranging from inter-communal, chieftaincy and cult related crises.

Made up of six communities, one of the crises some seven years ago reduced some of the villages into rubbles, houses, businesses, economic lives were destroyed just as many  were killed. Those who survived the trouble were sacked from the villages many years.

However normalcy has since returned to the place but there is gross deficiency in functional health facility in the area, except Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s modern Health centre which has been under lock and key for several months now, following the indefinite strike action by state health workers union; there is no other health care facility in the area.

There is an obvious high reproduction rate in the communities, with average population of five children per family – some have up to seven; most of the parents seen in the communities are very young, aged between 18 and 30 years, with little or no meaningful source of income.

Most children in the area are stunted in growth for reasons not unconnected with poor nutrition, and neglect of World Health Organization’s (WHO), recommendation three months routine de-warming practice.

In their usual manner of doing charity especially to the poor,  the Lulu-Briggs Foundation, under its Care For Life (CFL), programme  was at Oduha  Ogbakiri recently to sensitize mothers on the need to de-warm their children for healthy living and proper development.

They however were not just there for theory but to also demonstrate to them how to go about it. They administered the drugs free- of- charge on every child between the age of 2 and 13, however those within the age bracket of 15 years were equally de-wormed.

Team of medical personnel, especially pharmacists and nurses were on hand to attend to the excited   children who converged at the community’s town hall, venue of the exercise the moment they sighted the convoy of the team.

Earlier, leader of the team who is also Co-ordinator of Programmes of the Foundation, Inneba Ideria, addressed the children, and informed them of what they were there for. She charged  them on the need to maintain orderliness and good conduct as the programme lasted.

Ideria reminded them that they are  God’s heritage should not indulge themselves on any wrong doing; adding that they are  leaders of tomorrow who  the  society is waiting for them. She advised them to ensure they did not disappoint the World and their families in particular.

Beneficiaries,  mothers  and representative of the community who spoke at the exercise expressed surprised at the love and level of kindness demonstrated to them by  High Chief Lulu-Briggs and his family, they  prayed  God’s  to reward them immensely.

A mother of four, Chioma Kasarachi whose children were the first to benefit the exercise said,   “From the time I saw the banner at the town hall I was so impressed and expectant, I told my children that on no account shall we miss the exercise,  based on that I have been sending them to this place to monitor when the team will arrive, that is why we were the first to come here the moment they arrived.

“Am very happy that we have benefitted. I brought my children just for them to be dewormed, but to my surprise so many other gifts were giving to us like, powder, pomade, T-shirt, cap,  multivitamin drugs, drinks(Lucozade boost, and Ribina), among others, it is awesome,  we pray that may the Almighty God continue to increase our Daddy O. B. Lulu-Briggs and his wife.”

Also a primary 2, pupil of Ogbakiri, community School glory Oke who benefited on the exercise said, “I was given school bag, powder, drink, pomade, drugs and worm medicine. I am very happy and say thank you, may God bless Daddy O. B. Lulu-Briggs.”

In the same vein, Favour Ihwuordu, a mother whose 11/2 year-old baby (girl), benefitted from the event confessed that she does not know the convener of the free medical but expressed joy that such event took place in her community.

She said. “Town crier actually went round last night to pass the information on the exercise but because of language barrier I did not understand what they said, until I came around this venue.

I have not participated in this kind of event in my over one year of stay in this community. I am very excited about this and pray that God will replenish whoever that is behind this. It is a God thing he has done for our babies.”

Another member of the community, Charity Omabele, expressed joy for the gesture and said it was the first of its kind in the community.

She called on other wealthy of the society to borrow leaf from High Chief  Lulu-Briggs and show love to the poor of the communities, so they could also have a feel of their (the rich), world; and prayed God to continue to increase the Lulu-Briggs family.”

Shortly after the event, the programme Co-ordinator expressed satisfaction on the turn-out and level of acceptance shown by members of the community.

She said explained reason for a distinct outreach for children when she said, “organizing a De-worming program exclusively for children is one of the ways the Foundation’s expresses its regard and love for children being heritage of God.

“The very purpose of the O. B. Lulu-Brigg’s Foundation is for the indigents of the society; those in the rural communities, the hard to remember, reach of society. They are barely remembered, lack most basic social infrastructure, facilities, like this community we are, you could hardly see any health care facility here.

“The Foundation under its five program field has different programs for community dwellers. What we’ve come here to do is under the free medical mission in which we organize 5-day free general medical out-reach with different clinics in session. Apart from this, the Foundation also organize one day free eye test and also one day children de-worming exercise.

“The foundation has a vision to reach out to the entire Local Government Areas of the Niger Delta. For Rivers State, we have almost gone round the 23 LGAs.  We’ve held the 5-day Free medical in Emuoha LGA, in 2009, and here we are again in Ogbakiri, also in Emuoha for De-worming exercise for children between 3 and 12 years of age.”

Furthermore the Co-ordinator explained the reason for the choice of embarking on De-worm exercise for the children instead of other health programs for children.

“Most parents have forgotten that De-worming is key to child development. Most times children experience stomach ache, head ache, pains here or there and cry profusely, if carefully investigated the problem could be worm, and most often it is difficult for parents to design the cause of the discomfort.

“It is never in the agenda of most of them (Parents) to observe the World Health organization’s (WHO), 3-months routine De-worming prescription for everybody, both adults and children. Most people stay for years without administering worm medication on themselves and family members.

“That is why the O. B. lulu-Briggs Foundation has taken it upon itself to go round communities to remind parents on the need to form the habit of De-worming their children often, by demonstrating it to them to show them example.

“We believe that it is not just enough to go to these communities to tell them to De-worm their children, like other NGOs do, but we believe in taking a step to show them how to do it. That is essentially the reason for this and the choice of communities to carry out this.” She said.

Giving reasons for the gifts items distributed at the event said, “Children are God’s Heritage and are treated as such special they are. We use the items to lure them to come and be De-wormed. No child likes taking drugs irrespective of the taste, but when they come, and see those gifts, and the kind of drinks they like to take, Locozade boost, Ribena among others they will co-operate and take their drugs without much hassle.

“Again when other children who came go home and show them what was given them those that had not come would want to come so they could equally receive the gifts.

These are some of the reasons for the gifts to children. In this case we came here with powder, pomades, children drinks, school bags, pencil purse, cups among others to make the children happy as they come to take the drug.”

Responding to the gesture, representatives of the community, Innocent Leekwa and Esther Owhorji commended the Foundation for its show of love to the people of the community, especially the poor families who hardly could foot their families hospital bills and called for more of such programmes by multi-national companies and other NGOs to consolidate on what Lulu-Briggs has begun in the area.

Leekwa youth of the community said, “This is wonderful to us the members of the community. We did not believe that the program will be truly free, this is because other organizations who come and gave the impression that they were on free outreach, ended up charging one form of fee or the other, but this is entirely different and we thank the Lulu-Briggs for that, and say we love him.”

  • Rivers community demands justice 24 years after alleged massacre

THE people of Umuechem community in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State have demanded for justice and full compensation on the alleged massacre that led to the death of over 200 people in 1990. It would be recalled that 24 years ago, Umuechem, one of the oil communities in Rivers State, was allegedly attacked by the military after the people protested against environmental degradation caused by oil spill from the operation of Shell Petroleum Development (SPDC) in the area. In a Town Hall meeting during the week in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, with Social Action, a non-governmental organisation, the community said the judicial panel set up over the incident did not present a true and fair picture of what happened to their community in 1990. The chairman of the Umuechem Progressive Union Mr. Onwuli Johnson, and other members of the community expressed confidence that the NGO would bring justice to the community and assist them to get their full compensation. The community, who is set for its annual celebration on November 1st 2014, said over 200 houses were burnt down and destroyed with dynamite and other explosives. Mr. Johnson said: “We are happy that Social Action has come to intervene, unlike other NGOs which visited this community but regrettably nothing has come out of it. We are confident that Social Action’s intervention will be the end of our cries for justice. “We have agreed that the Umuechem resolution paper on the 1990 massacre will be presented and handed over to Social Action at the second Town Hall meeting which will take place before November 1st, 2014. “I want the NGO to understand that only N2500 was paid as relief funds to the people. And not all the cheques issued as relief funds were cleared. No other money was paid to anybody for whatever reasons. Most of the people murdered were thrown into the Chokocho River by their attackers.” Another community leader, Chief Sylvester Nwala, in his solidarity speech, said the mass murder that took place in Umuechem in 1990 happened to human beings and not plants or sands. “We have the account of what happened to us and such is unforgettable; no amount of money could be quantified with what the people and the community had suffered. I believe Social Action will achieve our expected dream.” Responding, the NGO’s Head of Community Action and Paralegal Centres, Celestine Akpobari, said his team was in the community to assess the plight of the community and to find ways to assist them to get justice. He said for many years now, the intervention of Social Action has become the only source of hope to those seeking for justice of all kinds. “We are here to intervene, this is a non-violent action. We are glad that the community understands our working plan to achieve justice.” When contacted, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ahmad Muhammed, said: ‘’That was a long time ago. I cannot comment on something I don’t know until I lay my hands on the available records.
