Rivers Hoopers’ Nwaiwu reflects on unforgettable Christmas cum New Year holidays

Holidays are special for various reasons. For some it’s a time to relax, unwind, take a trip, indulge in fun activities, enjoy solitude, exchange gifts, a time to reflect, or even strategize.

For most of the year, Rivers Hoopers‘ vice-captain, Nwaiwu Onyebuchi Vincent, lives a fast-paced life—training sessions, long travels, high-stakes games, and the unrelenting demands of elite basketball. But when the Christmas and New Year holidays arrived, Buchi pressed pause and returned to the one place that always reminds him: home.

It wasn’t a holiday defined by luxury or long-distance getaways. Rather, it was one which strengthened family ties and brought moments of reflection and a selfless act of service that left a lasting impression.

The holidays brought Buchi something that a demanding basketball calendar rarely allows: time. Time with family. Time with siblings who came around after long periods apart and the opportunity to reconnect with friends he had not seen in years.

Between conversations and shared memories, there were moments of simplicity: finding time to eat rice and chicken, laughing at old stories, and soaking in the warmth that only family can provide.

But make no mistake, it was not a quiet holiday. It was busy, sometimes stressful—but deeply meaningful.

“It was stressful,” Buchi admits. “But it was eventful.”

Part of Onyebuchi’s holiday took him on a journey to his hometown in Ahiazu-Mbaise Local Government Area, Imo State, for a funeral. The trip, though filled with sobriety, served as a prompt about the enduring strength of community and a telling reminder that basketball, while important, is only one part of a much larger story.

On December 23,  Buchi and his siblings came together with a shared purpose: to give back to widows in his hometown.

It was a collaborative effort rooted in gratitude, kindness, and empathy, and for the Rivers Hoopers vice-captain, it became the defining highlight of his holiday.

“To see the smiles on their faces”, Buchi recalls, “was absolutely fulfilling. That was the highlight of my holiday – the best part of it. I loved every bit of the experience.”

In those moments, basketball titles and personal achievements faded into the background, replaced by the joy of service and the power of community, accompanied by a gentle reminder that giving back is not an obligation but a privilege.

For Buchi, the holiday period is more than just a break from competition. It is essential—especially for an athlete.

“The importance of the holidays to me cannot be overemphasized,” he explains. “It’s a time to bond with family, to be with siblings and friends I haven’t had time to see all year.”

As a professional athlete, Buchi understands the cost of constant physical exertion and the need for balance.

“You can’t work your body all year round without rest,” he adds. “You also need time to bond with family. That balance is crucial in the life of an athlete.”

As preparations for another demanding campaign begins, Buchi returned refreshed – not just in body, but also in spirit, as the holidays gave him rest, perspective, renewed purpose, and motivation for the season ahead.

For the veteran KingsMan, time away from the hardwood reaffirmed a fundamental truth: success is not only measured in points, wins, or trophies, but also in connection, compassion, and giving back to community.

  • Amayo confident Rivers Hoopers will retain NPBL title

Amayo confident Rivers Hoopers will retain NPBL title

Ahead of the opening day at the 2025 Nigeria Premier Basketball League (NPBL) Final Four, Rivers Hoopers guard Kelvin Amayo has declared that the reigning champions plan to approach the season finale with a cutthroat mindset, focused on retaining their title.

The final phase of the 2025 season will showcase the best of Nigerian basketball as the league’s best four teams do battle (in a round robin format) for the league’s top prize and a ticket to the 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL).

Lagos Legends, Gboko City Chiefs, and Nigeria Customs will try to wrestle the coveted NPBL title from the KingsMen, who are two-time defending champions. However, Amayo, who was instrumental to the team’s 2024 success, insists that his side will be difficult to play against during the Final Four.

“Once we’re in form, it’s tough to defend [against] us, tough to play [against] us. I think we’ll be really good. Everybody has a good understanding of everybody’s role, and we just can’t wait to play this weekend,” remarked Amayo.

The Final Four will begin with a face-off between Lagos Legends and Nigeria Customs by 3pm today, 21st November, followed by Rivers Hoopers against Gboko City Chiefs at 5pm, in what will be a repeat of last year’s semi-final.

Amayo scored twenty-two points during that semi-final clash with the titled men before leading all scorers with twenty-nine points as Rivers Hoopers beat Hoops & Reads 71-54 in the 2024 NPBL Final.

The Nigerian Canadian, who was one of three KingsMen named in the 2024 NBBF All-Star Five, has quickly become a fan favourite following stand-out performances for the Hoopers in the NPBL and BAL.

But the 2024 NPBL Finals MVP says he is not focused on personal glory as he heads into another championship run with the six-time league winners.

“I didn’t focus on that last year; I think I just did it. So when I go out on the court, I think I’m going to have the same mindset this time around: just have fun. I think it’s too much Amayo Amayo Amayo [from the crowd]. I’m just going to enjoy myself and enjoy [playing for] the team. I feel like I’ve worked on my shape, I’ve worked on the plays, everything. I think we’re going to enjoy ourselves, and we’re going to let the coins fall like that,” he stated.

While clashes between Rivers Hoopers and Gboko City Chiefs have been keenly contested, the reigning champions have always come out on top in the rivalry (on five straight occasions), with the most recent instalment being a 93-92 win in overtime on day four of this season’s Final Eight Playoffs.

And the 33-year-old revealed that he is determined to keep the ball rolling for the Hoopers by approaching each game with “a killer mindset, just ready to have fun, and ready to lock in against whoever.”

After confronting Gboko City Chiefs today, 21st  November, the KingsMen will tango with Nigeria Customs on Saturday, 22nd  November, before taking on Lagos Legends on the final day of action on Sunday, 23rd

November, with all games played at the Basketball Stadium, 59 Niger Street, Port Harcourt Township.

Lagos Legends end Rivers Hoopers one-year unbeaten runs in NPBL

Defending champions Rivers Hoopers suffered a narrow 79-80 loss in overtime to Lagos Legends in a Day Five encounter at the ongoing 2025 Nigeria Premier Basketball League (NPBL) Final Eight Playoffs on Friday night.

Heading into the encounter which took place at the Basketball Stadium on 59 Niger Street, Port Harcourt Township, Rivers State, both teams were riding on a wave of four straight victories at the Playoffs and were eager to preserve their unbeaten record.

Lagos Legends started brightly, as they enjoyed a 9-4 lead (which was their biggest lead all game) inside the opening four minutes of a first quarter which saw the game tied at various intervals, with momentum swinging back and forth as both teams scored twenty-two (22-22) points each.

The intensity continued into the second quarter with neither side willing to give anything away in a contest which was rightly billed as the star match of Day Five. However, Legends squeezed their noses in front at 41-40 heading into the halftime break.

The physical and tactical battle continued into the second half, and again there was nothing to separate both sides as the game stretched into overtime with the score at 71-71.

Having lost 89-70 to Rivers Hoopers during the Inter-Group Phase, Lagos Legends were out to get their pound of flesh and had to work hard to do so, as the hosts lost a league game for the first time since November 2022.

Despite the defeat, Hoopers Head Coach Ogoh Odaudu praised his team’s performance on the night.

“Today’s game was really intense. I think they [the players] did well, [but] fatigue is actually setting in. And when you’re that tired, you start to have a couple of mental lapses, and that’s what happened today. But of course we’ve been getting better day by day. Every game we’ve played, we’ve gotten better, and we are a work in progress. We’re going to get a well-deserved rest, then we’ll come back and start getting ready for the final four. It’s not a problem at all. One of two things must happen every time you play a game; you either win, or you lose. We lost today, so that’s it.” he said.

Isaiah Williams scored a game-leading twenty (20) points and was one of five KingsMen to hit double figures. The rest were Victor Sunday, who had fifteen (15) points, John Idoga dropped ten (10) points, while Buchi Nwaiwu finished with a double-double of twelve (12) points and eleven (11) rebounds.

Peter Olisemeka, who also had a double-double of thirteen (13) points and eleven (11) rebounds, said the players have given their all on court but must now regroup and come back stronger.

“To be honest, we played as hard as possible. We had lapses, but right now, the most important thing for us as a team is to regroup and come back. I wouldn’t really say it’s a loss; I think that it’s a lesson, so we learn and we move on. Fix the things we need to build and get ready for the final four.” Olisemeka added.

Rivers Hoopers will next be in action by 3pm on today, 1st November, 2025, when they take on Nile University Spartans.

Rivers Hoopers whip Hoops & Read to get NBPL Play-Offs  underway

Reigning champions Rivers Hoopers launched their 2025 Nigeria Basketball Premier League Final Eight Playoffs campaign with a commanding 73-50 victory over Hoops & Read, thanks to an explosive first-quarter performance which helped the KingsMen lead from start to finish.

The defending champions started hot, opening up a 12-0 lead inside the first four minutes, thanks to four consecutive shots from deep courtesy of Mustapha Oyebanji and Isaiah Williams. That twelve-point lead grew to eighteen at the end of the first quarter as the score stood at 29-11.

Speaking after the game, Rivers Hoopers Head Coach Ogoh Odaudu said his team’s strong start was crucial in determining the outcome of the game.

“We started off really strong, and I think that determined the direction that the game was going to go. Even though the guys took their foot off the pedal at some point in the game and almost let the opponents come back. It’s something I’m going to have to address going forward.”

Hoops & Read tried to find a way back into the game but could only reduce the deficit by two points at halftime, as the hosts took a 41-25 lead into the break.

Both teams seemed to have gone cold following the break, as they could only manage ten points apiece in a combative third quarter, before the KingsMen wrapped up the win with an improved fourth-quarter showing.

Despite the twenty-three-point demolition of their opponents, for coach Odaudu, picking up a vital win to start the playoffs was what really mattered.

“For us, it doesn’t matter the number of points we win by; just a win is good for us. We’ll take a one-point lead; we’ll take a half-point lead; a win is a win. “We’re happy with how it ended,” he emphasised.

Overall, it was an all-round team performance from the defending champions, as ten out of the eleven KingsMen who made the matchday roster scored points, with thirty-five (35) points coming from the bench.

Captain Victor Anthony Koko alongside Oyebanji led the KingsMen with eleven (11) points apiece, while the energetic Victor Sunday dropped ten (10) points along with five rebounds and five steals. Isaiah Williams scored nine (9) points on his Rivers Hoopers debut, as Peter Olisemeka recorded a game-high twelve (12) rebounds.

Kelvin Amayo, who was named the Most Valuable Player at the 2024 NBPL Finals, scored nine (9) points on his return to basketball in Nigeria and relished the support of the Port Harcourt crowd, which cheered on the team to victory.

  • Rivers Hoopers not banking on hosting right to win NBPL Play-Offs , says Odaudu

Rivers Hoopers not banking on hosting right to win NBPL Play-Offs , says Odaudu

A day after receiving the hosting rights for the 2025 Nigeria Basketball Premier League (NBPL) Playoffs and Final Four, Rivers Hoopers Head Coach Ogoh Odaudu has warned that his charges must be prepared to work hard to retain their title despite playing on home court.

In a circular released on Monday, 20th  October, 2025, the League Management Committee of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) announced Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as host for the third (playoffs) and final phases (final four) of the 2025 NBPL season.

This means the Garden City will serve as host for the final phase of the league for the third year running, having also hosted the 2023 and 2024 finals, much to the delight of the award-winning gaffer who said, “Everybody wants to play in front of their home crowd. You can see the atmosphere in the gym anytime we play here; it’s electric. Even though we wanted to go out to have a taste of what it is outside, there was no other bid from elsewhere. Well, [we’ll do] anything to bring basketball to the doorstep of our fans right here. So we went for it and were granted [the hosting right], and we are happy about that.”

With the latest development, expectations remain high among basketball enthusiasts for the defending champions to clinch the NBPL title at the end of the 2025 season, just as they did in 2023 and 2024 on home soil.

But the seasoned tactician, Odaudu, has warned that with the increased level of competition within the league, only hard work will deliver a third straight crown to the KingsMen.

“Like I’ve said earlier, teams are not smiling; they are recruiting massively. So it’s not going to be a walk in the park for us [despite playing at home]. It [retaining the title] is something that we have to actually work for in order to win, and that’s what we’re planning to do,” he stated.

The Playoffs (Final Eight) is scheduled for 26th  October  to 3rd  November  during which period all eight teams will play once against the other seven teams in a round robin format, with the top four teams qualifying for the Final Four, which will run from 20th  to 24th  November.

All matches will be played at the Indoor Basketball Stadium, #59 Niger Street, Port Harcourt Township.

Rivers Hoopers set for 2025  NBPL Playoffs with victory at Sauft Cup

As part of preparations for the playoff round of the 2025 Nigeria Basketball Premier League (NBPL), Rivers Hoopers Basketball Club has emerged  champions of the Sauft Basketball Cup 2025.

The Sauft Basketball Cup is a yearly invitational tournament held in the city of Port Harcourt, which brings top basketball talents together to engage in a variety of activities.

This year, the tournament featured eight teams split into two groups of four teams each. Participating teams included reigning NBPL champions Rivers Hoopers, Lagos Raptors, Rivers Pioneers, The Crusaders, Discover Spartans, Sauft Basketeers, High Flyers, and Alloy Hoops.

Just as in the 2025 NBPL season so far, the KingsMen proved to be unbeatable as they swept through the group stage unscathed, recording wins over High Flyers (76-60), Crusaders (78-66), and Spartans (97-84) to finish top of Group B.

In the semi-final, Rivers Hoopers, who paraded a much-changed lineup captained by Azubuike Ekuma throughout the tournament, cruised to a 75-60 victory over Sauft Basketeers before wrapping up the tournament in style by defeating Discover Spartans of Warri 72-60.

For their efforts, the KingsMen received a one million naira prize for emerging as champions and also had Victor Sunday as well as John Idoga feature in the tournament’s Best Five.

Sunday, who was also named as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament, was delighted with his and his team’s achievements despite being shorthanded.

“Thanks to God for being the MVP and being part of the Best Five. I am deeply grateful to my teammates, coaches, and all those who came out to support us. I think the other guys underrated us because we were short of numbers; [they thought] that we wouldn’t win,” he said.

The tournament MVP also revealed that the KingsMen have been locked in preparations for the next phase of league basketball and will be ready when it tips off.

“We’re preparing for the next phase [of the league], trying to get better and better. Hopefully we’re ready to go. I think the next phase is not going to be easy, but trust me, we’re ready,” he insisted.

Rivers Hoopers remain in the hunt for a third straight Nigerian League title, and after finishing both the Group and Inter-Group Phases of the 2025 season unbeaten, they will look to carry the same momentum into the Playoffs round.

The Final Eight will tip off from Friday, 24 October to Friday 31 October. Top four teams will head to the Final Four to determine the champions of the 2025 Nigeria Basketball Premier League.

NBPL: Rivers Hoopers edge Lagos Legends to keep to round up Atlantic Conference

Reigning Nigeria Basketball Premier League (NBPL) champions Rivers Hoopers put up a performance underlined by resilience and character, as they overturned a 4-point deficit at halftime to beat Lagos Legends 89-70 in the final game of the Atlantic Conference Phase Two.

In what was essentially a battle for pride and supremacy, it was Lagos Legends who scored the game’s first points as they opened up an early lead that stretched to nine points at 26-17 by the end of the first quarter, which was characterised by near misses for the KingsMen.

The KingsMen improved in their shot accuracy during the second quarter, as vice-captain Buchi Nwaiwu and Victor Sunday combined for fourteen points to cut the deficit to four points with the halftime score at 47-43.

The halftime break offered Rivers Hoopers Head Coach Ogoh Odaudu the opportunity to make tactical tweaks, reinforcing how the team contained their opponents.

“The first thing that I spoke about in the huddle today was transition defense, the need to get back on time quickly. We didn’t do that well. When we corrected it later on, the game changed [in our favour], but in the first half they killed us on the transition offense. “It’s something that we’re definitely going to work on going forward,” he revealed.

The KingsMen responded positively to Odaudu’s halftime instructions and, buoyed by the vociferous crowd, came out with much verve in the third.

Samuel Sani showed outstanding industry, scoring big points along with vital rebounds. But it was John Idoga who got the crowd rocking with a game-tying shot from deep to level the score at 61-61, before Abdul Malik sent the arena into a frenzy with the last sequence of the third quarter, sinking one free throw followed by a brilliant layup to hand the hosts the lead for the first time with the score at 64-61.

From that moment on, it was one-way traffic as Malik’s energy inspired the team to an outstanding performance in the fourth quarter, during which they restricted their opponents to just nine (9) points while scoring twenty-five (25) to close out the game at 89-70.

Speaking after the game, Odaudu could not hide his admiration for his standout performers.

“I am very proud of both of them, Malik and especially Favour [Komene]. They changed the tempo and the dynamic of the game. They are my two MVPs for today’s game. These are people who hadn’t seen major minutes in all the games, but they stepped up when it mattered most and helped us out.

He further said such mentality shown by Malik and Favour is what makes Rivers Hoopers formidable.

“That’s how it’s supposed to be. There’s no specific day, and there’s no particular person who is a hero on this team. Anybody can wake up any day and bail us out, and that’s what Milk did today,” he pointed out.

Buchi Nwaiwu alongside John Idoga, top-scored for the KingsMen with fifteen points, while Sani (14) and Victor Sunday (12) also hit double figures.

The result meant Rivers Hoopers completed Phase Two of the Atlantic Conference with a perfect record, much to the delight of the team’s gaffer, who also pointed out some areas for improvement.

“I’m happy that it was a clean sweep, but I’m also not happy with the way we played. It wasn’t entirely convincing. I don’t think the scoreline reflected the true situation of the game. We started off really badly with too many mistakes; we missed too many open baskets, so it’s something that we have to go back to the drawing board and work on. In all, I’m happy that we won, and we’ll move on from there.”

Attention now shifts to Phase Three of the NBPL 2025 season which will see the top four teams from both Conferences gather for the Playoffs at a yet to be named venue.

Gritty  Rivers Hoopers sink Comets despite shaky start

Rivers Hoopers showed grit and composure to defeat Ebun Comets 65-49 and take a third win from as many games at the ongoing Nigeria Basketball Premier League (NBPL) Phase Two.

After a slow start, the defending champions picked up the pace to lead by five points at the end of the first quarter with the score at 19-14.

However, the second quarter was one to forget, as the KingsMen could only manage nine (9) points (their lowest tally for an entire quarter), and Comets scored double the points with eighteen (18). This meant the hosts would trail at halftime for the first time this season, as the score was 32-28 in favour of Comets.

Speaking during his post-game interview, Rivers Hoopers Head Coach Ogoh Odaudu admitted to his team’s slow start.

“I think we started badly. I noticed before jump ball [that] the body attitude was not convincing; there was no energy at all. Everything was flat. That was why we struggled, and that’s something I have to work on.”

The KingsMen returned from the halftime break eager to prove a point and quickly regained the lead, with vice-captain Buchi Nwaiwu firing from deep for a three-point lead which the defending champions maintained as the score stood at 46-43 entering the fourth.

Rivers Hoopers closed out the game with a nearly flawless performance in the fourth, which pleased Odaudu, as they notched up nineteen (19) points while limiting Comets to a meagre six (6) points the entire quarter to wrap up the encounter 65-49.

“Basketball is about stopping your opponent from scoring, not how many baskets you make.” I emphasised a lot about the defence, and they came, and they did it perfectly,” he said.

Up next for the KingsMen is a date with Lagos Legends, who are also unbeaten through the Phase Two games played so far, and with both teams already assured of their spots in the Playoffs Phase of the league (last eight), Odaudu said it will be a clash of egos, but one which he will treat like any other game.

“It will be treated just like any other game.” We’re going to do the same thing we always do, nothing different. It’s going to be a very intense game tomorrow because nobody wants to be beaten. It’s an ego battle right now, [and] we don’t want to disappoint our fans here at home. So we’re going to come all out and hopefully take the win,” he stated.

The game between Rivers Hoopers and Lagos Legends will take place by 5pm on Thursday, at the Indoor Basketball Court, 59 Niger Street, Port Harcourt Township.

NBPL: No mercy as Rivers Hoopers rout Kwara Falcons

Rivers Hoopers rode a wave of pinpoint shooting from deep to outclass Kwara Falcons 81-61 on Day Three of the ongoing 2025 Nigeria Basketball Premier League (NBPL) Phase Two on Tuesday.

Kwara Falcons started hot, drilling back-to-back threes to take an early lead, but once Rivers Hoopers erased a four-point gap to tie the game at 13-13, there was no going back as the KingsMen scored four more to end the first quarter 17-13.

With the defending champions well settled into the game, it didn’t take much time before the team got the crowd rocking in the second quarter. Mustapha Oyebanji scored fourteen (14) of his team-leading eighteen (18) points in the second quarter, shooting four threes to feed the frenzy, as the KingsMen took a fourteen-point lead with the score at 44-30 heading into the halftime break.

The team scored five (5) threes in the second quarter and four (4) in the fourth for a total of twelve (12) overall (the highest total managed by a team in a single game at the ongoing NBPL Atlantic Conference Phase Two).

At the end of the third quarter, the hosts had opened up a twenty-two-point advantage, much to the delight of the energetic crowd, and kept up the tempo to close out the game at 81-61.

Amongst four KingsMen who hit double figures, Favour Komene had a memorable night as the youngster notched fourteen (14) points, with each of his four (4) threes cheered on by the crowd. Captain Victor Koko scored thirteen (13) points, and John Idoga added eleven (11).

In the end, the defending champions put up a performance which was well pleasing, not only to the fans but also to Assistant Coach Ronald Alalibo.

“I’m pleased, because when you make a mistake, you go back to the drawing board, you see the kind of adjustments you want to make, and you try as much as possible to effect those adjustments to enable you to perform better.

“So far so good; it’s a learning process. Even in this game that we won, we still saw some mistakes that we made, and we’ll go back to the drawing board to make some more adjustments moving forward because we have to get better each game,” he said.

Rivers Hoopers next play Comets by 5pm on Wednesday and will look to make it three wins from three Phase Two games.
