Former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Caretaker Committee, Ahmed Makarfi, has urged the Federal Government to work hand in hand with the Governors of Rivers, Benue and Taraba States to apprehend and prosecute those behind the recent killings in the three states

Makarfi , who described the crises in the states as unnecessary and avoidable, said government should quickly develop a strategy that would restore full normalcy and security to the states.

On the herdsmen killings, he added: “Like I said, you know we have different levels of police in this country. We have the Commissioner of Police in Benue, the AIG of Police in Benue, and yesterday I deployed my DIG operations there and definitely we are doing all we can to see we maintain law and order in all parts of the country.”

“Let’s use the example of Benue, you know most of these states where you have several languages, you know is an issue of communal misunderstanding.

“I think what we should be praying for is for Nigerians to learn to live in peace with each other, I think that is very important.”

“You know every time we meet with the President he gives a charge. He said that we should go and take care and ensure that we tighten our security.

“There are so many measures. For instance in Benue we are going to deploy more units to support the efforts the police is making in the state to ensure we have adequate protection to the men and communities and members.”

Group urges Fed Govt to investigate Rivers killings

A group under the aegis of Coalition of Concerned Civil Society Organisation of Nigeria, yesterday called on the Attorney General of the Federation and Minster of Justice, Abubakar Malami to investigate and prosecute perpetrators of killings during the recently held legislative rerun election in Rivers State.

The group, which protested to the headquarters of Ministry of Justice in Abuja, said the only way to ensure democratic stability in Nigeria was to ensure the conduct of peaceful elections.

Its National President, Yusuf Nadabo, noted that the essence of the protest was to say no to impunity, electoral violence, while describing what transpired in the Rivers rerun election as undemocratic.

“As citizens of this country who practice democratic exercise we should as a matter of fact conduct our electoral processes peacefully, freely so that it can be acceptable by the citizens of this country.

“We have held election in the recent history, we have held election in Edo and Ondo states, these elections were conducted peacefully and they were accepted,” he said.

Nadabo stressed that what happened during the rerun election in Rivers State must not be allowed to happen again in a sane society.

“It is enough, we cannot continue to have our security personnel, the DSP who was beheaded alongside his ADC, many civilians were killed and nobody is a saying anything. Some thugs were instigated to come and do all sort of dubious act there, some of which were arrested.

    • As spy Police Officers get new uniform

Experts in murder case investigation in Nigeria have been dispatched to Rivers state to investigate the various killings in the state.

Inspector- General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase disclosed this in Port Harcourt the state capital on Monday.

Arase was in the state for the formal launch of the new uniform for Supernumerary Police (Spy Police), officers organized by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).

He said the team of investigators from the Force headquarters, Abuja are in the state to take over the investigation into the killings to ensure that the culprits, irrespective of who, were punished in accordance with the law.

The security Boss condemned the spate of killings in parts of the state and the country in general and described as unacceptable the high rate of killings and illegal arms possessions in the state and country and assured residents and citizens alike of the security agencies’ determination to ensure that hoodlums, (cultists, robbers, kidnappers), among others do not take over the states.

“It is unacceptable that people should take laws into their hands, this is not a Hordecians state where might is right and I have told the Commissioner of Police, we must go after whoever takes the life of anybody and ensure the person is treated according to the law.

“Again, the proliferation of firearms in the system is not acceptable not only in Rivers state, but across the length and breadth country, this is also a reflective of the international environment. It is a global thing, but we will make sure that we did not allow a group of criminals to overwhelm the state. I assure the people of this country that we are going to clamp down on them and bring them to book.”

“For those alleged of masterminding the killings in the state and those on the police invitation lists are being investigated. I have dispatched a team of homicide investigators from Abuja to come and take over the investigation in the state. As you know, when things like this happen there is usually different perspective to it.

“I have always taken a stand that Police is supposed to be apolitical m and if we are going to be apolitical, we must be professional in our approach in investigating these matters that is why I have deployed the team to take over most of these cases and ensure they are professionally investigated.

No fewer than 12 persons, including a family of four, were reportedly killed by suspected cultists in Ula-Upata and Edoha Communities of Ahoada East Local Government Area of the state last weekend. The Police confirmed the death of all four persons.

The bodies of some of the victims were reportedly missing, but their heads were said to have been seen floating in a nearby river.

The state commissioner of Police, Musa Kimo assured that the criminals would be tracked soon, but assured that normalcy has returned to the communities as security has been beefed up in the area.

Kimo appealed for release of timely information to the police just as he urged community members to organise community policing vigilante groups to man their communities.

  • Rivers killings shameful – Buhari

    Rivers killings shameful – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday describe as shameful the recent political killings in Rivers state as a result of the rerun elections ordered by the Court of Appeal, adding that more Nigerians have been killed in Rivers than another state in the country.

The President who spoke at the National Executive Council meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) revealed that the government has saved over N3 trillion through its Treasury Single Account policy, while that the list of money recovered by government through the ongoing anti corruption crusade will soon be made public.

The President also said it was regrettable that the nation failed to save for the rainy days when oil sold for above 100 dollars, pointing out that at the moment, about 27 states in the country are not able to pay the salaries of their workers as and when due.

Buhari who expressed sadness over the violence that characterized elections in the country appealed to security agents in the country to try and give Nigerians the confidence to go out and perform their constitutional responsibility without molestation, adding that even though the leadership of INEC has been changed, he has shown that he has a lot of respect for them and the security agents.

He said: “Of course, the leadership of INEC has been changed, but I appeal to the leadership of the military, security agents and INEC that what I want Nigerians to remember me for, even if I have to leave the Presidency tomorrow is that I respect them.

“I want all Nigerians to believe and hold their PVC as personal entitlement as Nigerians and use it the way the like, and vote for whoever they like at which ever election. If they voluntarily sold it, it is part of their right and so, let them sell it and remain at home and not participate in any election.

“But let the law enforcement agencies give them the confidence that nobody will come out who has money to hire thugs, give them drugs and stop them from exercising their fundamental right.

“I am afraid I did not succeed in the election in Kogi, Bayelsa, Rivers. I think that more Nigerians are killed or killed themselves in Rivers than in any particular state. At this stage of our political development, to remain brutal is shameful and as a government, I promise we will do something by the next general election.”

Speaking on the economy, he said: “the fall of oil prices after Nigeria has made itself a mono economy is a disaster. I wonder why people could not believe that in Nigeria; about 27 out of 36 states have difficulty in paying basic salaries of their workers.

“If from 1999, oil sold above 100 dollars per barrel with an export of about 2 million barrel per day, how come Nigeria failed to make some arrangement to cushion the effect of a probably volatile oil market? Again, it shows failure of the last administration.

“But we are now to pick the pieces as an APC government and so, there is no need complaining, but let us concentrate and see how much we can do with whatever remains of the economy.

“However, we realized that agriculture and solid minerals are two areas that can quickly come to help us to recover economically, at least in terms of employment and feeding ourselves and more importantly, saving the hard currency to make sure that what is left our industries remain open, employing Nigerians and producing goods and services which is very important.

“The policy we are trying to implement is TSA. When we insist that we have to know what comes in and what goes out for us to make a comprehensive amendment to the economy.

“If you go and see the Central Bank Governor, he will tell you that in the TSA, we have more than N3 trillion. Where would this money have been if TSA was not in vogue? I was made to understand that vouchers would have quickly been raised towards the end of the financial year and checks made. Whether they are going into projects or private pockets, nobody can prove it to you.

“But that money is there, it is identified, if is quantified and when the budget comes back eventually, the Ministry of finance will see how to allocate it to the rest of the country.

“We have tried to make sure that NNPC is reorganized, so that we know how much of our crude is taken, how much it is sold and to which account the money is going.

“But I tell you that up to the time we came, if anybody told you that he knows how much of crude is exchanges hands either on the high sea or reaching their destination and the accounts the money goes into, that person is not telling you the truth.

“We are getting the cooperation of countries that has received this crude. But we have to be sure of the facts in our hands before we start prosecution so that Nigerians will believe what we have been telling them.”

On the fight against corruption, President Buhari said: “I was telling a British team that came to supervise the training team they sent that when I was in uniform, we took the perceived corrupt ones and put them in safe custody and quietly told them they were guilty until they can prove themselves innocent.

“But now under multiparty democratic system, I see some of them ride flashy cars, some of them have built estates here, but they are innocent until we can prove them guilty. This situation is true and you don’t need to stress your imagination to find out.

“If you can find out, you discover that a level eight officer has five houses, while you, as a Permanent Secretary or Commissioner still living in a rented house. That is the credible thing to do now.

“We have to get credible evidence to carry our successful prosecution and get judgment from the judiciary. But effort is being made to give a list of recoveries in whatever currencies so far so that Nigerians will know that it is not all about long stories”.

While assuring Nigerians that the government was winning on war against insurgency, he said “we have made progress. It was a very courageous decision that the party took and executed by the Executive by removing most of the military hierarchy and appointing those to take over from them, acquiring some new hard and soft ware and raising the moral of the military to go secure the rest of the country which was then 14 out of 774 local government.

“I have said it often that as far as I know and the service Chiefs who are on ground, they are not holding any local government. But the still have some capability especially on soft target by using technology.

“For Niger Delta, the militants are sending some conflicting messages. Some have said they are ready to drop their arms and join the rest of the nation to build it. But part of them is still sabotaging installations which are making investments in that lucrative area of Nigeria difficult because nobody will submit his riches to financial institutions; get money only to suffer huge loss.

“So, the environment for investment is being sabotaged by our own selves, Nigerians. We are doing our begs with the military by trying to persuade them to join the rest of the country because in unity lies our strength.

Turning to the party, President Buhari said: “I will like you to continue to make sacrifice. I know you are being harassed since the election that they haven’t seen anything on the ground. Well, if you have any explanation that could be accepted, is that you have three more years to go.

“When we came in after 16 years if PDP, each government had 42 ministries. We reduced them to 24, removed 21 Permanent Secretaries. We sat down and reflected seriously. We were all in the process of taking over at a time of national budget.

“So, imagine the volume of work and with what happened in the National Assembly, the padding, it would appear that below the Permanent Secretaries, there are still a lot of bureaucracies that are still with them. So, you have to appreciate the position we are in.

“Having cut 42 to 24, correspondingly, the parastatals will be cut down to some size and realigned and the boards reconstituted. We gave a blanket order which we had to rescind when we said all boards are suspended or dissolved.

“We had to go back and lick our vomit in terms of university boards because we found out that according to their laws, they cannot choose Vice Chancellors unless the Boards seat down, interview prospective candidates who wants to be VCs. So, there is nothing wrong in saying sorry and going back on your decision. So, we said sorry and allow all the universities to continue with their boards. But for the rest, eventually, we will make it. So, please, try to bear with us as we reflect on where we found ourselves.

“For globetrotting, sometimes, you need to present your case on personal basis to your economic colleagues and neighbors. Nothing is better than personal touch and I believe that we are learning a lot and eventually, the nation will realized so, I don’t envy you on the harassment you are going through from your constituencies. Take it with a lot of determination and we will be all right God willing”.

National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun said naturally, this would have been the time to roll out the drums and celebrate loudly, adding that being a government and a party that is responsive, “we are very well aware of the hardships in the land and for that reason, it should be a period of introspection, a period for memories and a period for reminiscences.

“The problems we have are well known, of course originating from two well known factors, our squandered patrimony of course, the unfortunate coincidence of the collapse of the price of crude. Nevertheless, inspite of these hardships, our government has recorded strides that are worth mentioning, that are worth celebrating and that are worth noting.

“No question at all, that the vigorous and focused leadership provided in the fight against insurgency has yielded results that we all, as a nation, must be proud of. The insurgents have been deprived of the possibility of ever again, holding Nigerian territory and hoisting any of their dastardly flags.

“We have other issues like the TSA, and what it has done for our states even though temporarily and of course, Mr President’s shuttle diplomacy, which as we can see, is gradually beginning to stabilize. The oil market, the price of crude is gradually beginning to crawl persistently, slowly but upwards.

“It is true, these are hard times, but hard times create challenges. Challenges call for men and women to agree in leadership, united, focused, passionate in the policies that they stand for, which means that this party must rediscover itself, which means that this party must stand as one behind the success of our president and of the policies that we stand for and of the promises he has made to the Nigerian people.

“This also means that this is a time to stand together, which means that this is a time to rededicate ourselves and the party to the vision to which the people of this nation voted. We must leave this arena once more as a strong, united fighting force dedicated to delivering on the promises made by Mr. President to the Nigerian people.”

Two suspects held for Rivers killings

The Police in Rivers State have arrested two persons, suspected to have killed some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Omoku, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) and  Buguma in Asari-Toru Local Government Area.

Commissioner of Police  Musa Kimo confirmed this in a statement in Port Harcourt, the state capital yesterday.

Kimo said Anthony Ugo was held for the murder and beheading, Saturday night, of the APC Omoku Ward 4 Chairman, Franklin Obi, and the killing of his wife and 18-year-old son, Bestman.

He said Ndubisi Tochi was arrested for the clubbing and burning of Ofinjite Amachree at Buguma on Monday.

The commissioner condemned the “renewed senseless killings” in the state and vowed to ensure that the perpetuators were prosecuted.

He said the two suspects were being interrogated and hoped that they would assist in apprehending the rest of their gang and their sponsors.

Kimo said: “You would recall that on Saturday,  March 5, 2016,  at Omoku, Frank Obi with his wife and son were murdered. Similarly, on Monday, March 7, 2016, at Buguma, Ofinjite Amachree was killed and his body set ablaze.

“I’m saddened by these tragic and senseless killings while my heart and sincere condolence goes to the bereaved families. We must realise that violence is never and will never be a solution.

“While investigation is on, let me inform you that the command will bring to book the perpetrators of not only these killings but similar incidents.

“We have in our custody Anthony Ugoh, who was arrested in connection with the murder of Frank Obi and two other relations. We have also arrested Ndubisi Tochi on the allegations of the killing of Ofinjite Amachree.

  • Wike berates APC for seeking probe of Rivers killings

Wike berates APC for seeking probe of Rivers killings

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has said the call by the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership to probe the killings during the last general election is laughable.

Wike spoke yesterday in Port Harcourt, the state capital, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Sir, Opunabo Inko-Tariah.

The governor’s aide said APC and its leadership were frustrated.

He said the call for a probe into the killings was laughable because they occurred when an APC government under former Governor Chibuike Amaechi was in power.

Inko-Tariah accused APC State Chairman Davies Ikanya of allegedly indicting Amaechi of maladministration and repudiating his constitutional responsibility of protecting life and property.

The governor’s aide urged the state’s APC leadership to give the public details of the killings during the last general elections since it claimed to have the records.

He said: “I have just been briefed on the bombastic outburst by Davies Ikanya and his co-travellers in the Rivers State chapter of the APC, deprecating Governor Wike for not probing the killings in Rivers State during the elections.

“This is laughable and inane. Is it a case of selective amnesia? Since Dr Ikanya has details of the murders associated with the last general election, why not make them public? In fact, he should be the prime suspect in the alleged murders.

“This obviates the need for further proof that Ikanya and his cohorts are a bunch of flustered and rudderless characters who will relentlessly – although fruitlessly – try to sully the reputation of the governor.

“You don’t need a probe panel to disclose the identities of the alleged murders and their victims. After all, the APC was in power and in control of the state’s machinery. Why then did it not set up a panel? The reason is simple: it shall indict itself.”

  • Rivers killings victims’ family seeks justice

Rivers killings victims’ family seeks justice

They showed no mercy. In one fell swoop, nine persons, including a father, his two sons and daughter were killed. It happened last Friday in Obrikon, Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni  Local Government Area of Rivers State. One week after, the Adube family members are still in tears. They are seeking justice.

Spokesman of the family Henry Adube yesterday gave the names of those killed as:

Former Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni Local government, late  Hon. Christopher Adube, his two sons Lucky and John Adube , his daughter Joy,  a family friend, Mr. Iyk Ogarabe and the family driver, Mr.  Samuel Chukwunonye.

Henry, who was weeping profusely while speaking to The Nation urged the National Hunan Right Commission (NHRC), the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) and other human rights groups to investigate the death of his brother’s family.

He said politically-motivated killings most stop.

He added that those who killed his brother and family came to wipe out his family, saying that the gunmen did not show any mercy in their operation.

“That fateful evening they stormed the compound and forced their way in and started shooting. If you look at what happened,   you will see that the armed men were desperate to end my brother’s family. After killing my brother, they went and shot Joy and John, including a family friend and driver.

“Many people had been killed during the campaign/ rally in the area and the worst thing is that nobody has been arrested or prosecuted. I am begging Nigerians, National Human Rights Commission, Civil Liberty Organisation and other human right groups to investigate this gruesome murder.”

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni Local Government Area, Hon Ejechi Felix, said the remains of the victims would not be buried until police finish their investigation.

He said the essence of the killing was to scare APC supporters from coming out to cast their votes tomorrow.

He urged the APC supporters not to be deterred by the unfortunate event but to come out en masse to vote for Dr. Dakuku Peterside and all APC candidates for the Rivers State House of Assembly.

  • We’ve identified culprits in Rivers’ killings, says IGP

Police chief Suleiman Abba has said some suspects in the killings in Rivers State have been identified.

But the Inspector-General did not name the culprits.

The IGP said three suspects were arrested in Enugu in connection with the blast that took place during the presidential and National Assembly elections.

Suleiman spoke in Abuja yesterday during a meeting with Commissioners of Police as part of preparations for the elections.

He said more men would be deployed in Rivers and others during the elections.

On the unrest in Rivers, Abba said: “Let me confirm to you that arrests have been made and there are also suspects identified with the incidents in Rivers, including those that were committed as far back as during the period of campaigns.

“We have identified culprits or those suspected to have been involved or being the master mind of these offences. We have not made it public because we are using all other avenues. Our intelligence and operatives are out there to arrest them. Where we don’t get them immediately, perhaps, after a little while, we will exploit other avenues, including declaring them wanted.”

On the deployment of more personnel, the IGP said: “The purpose of our meeting includes strengthening our deployment to Rivers and other states where we feel we really need to strengthen the deployments to prevent lawlessness. It is not only in Rivers; there are also two or three other states that we will strengthen our deployment from senior officers down to other officers so that we take charge and make sure those incidents are not recorded anymore.”

Suleiman spoke also on the bombing during the presidential election in Enugu. He said: “We have arrested three suspects in connection with the case and our investigation has gone to a very advanced stage and we were able to identify the factory where those Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were manufactured and I think that alone is a big success and investigation is ongoing.”

He praised policemen for what he described as their display of professionalism, impartiality and non-partisanship during the presidential and National Assembly elections.

Abba noted that 124 suspects were arrested for various electoral offences, adding that some have been charged to court.

His words: “So far, we have 124 incidents of electoral offences that we have investigated and quite a number of them have been charged to court already while others will still require INEC’s intervention.”

On the alleged threat against the Igbo by the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the IGP said since the traditional ruler has denied the allegation, he was not in any position to state otherwise.

The Inspector-General said: “On the issue of Oba of Lagos making statement about who electorate or voters should vote for in this election, I saw it in the media and I tried all my best to verify whether that statement was made and so far, what I have been able to gather is the fact that the Oba himself denied it.

“And if he denied it, who am I to say otherwise? However, if for any reason that it becomes a subject of further efforts to confirm if he did it or not, I think we will leave that to the future but for now, this is what I have.”

Northerners in Rivers yesterday criticised the continued killing of leaders and supporters of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the state, describing those perpetrating the act as wicked and callous.

The group under the aegis Northern Community Association of Nigeria, Rivers State chapter, said the killing of nine APC leaders and supporters in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government few days to the governorship and State House of Assembly elections called for concern.

The leader of the group, Alhaji Jauro Atiku, spoke during a victory party organised by the leaders of Northern community to celebrate Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.

Atiku urged his members to maintain peace and vote for the APC governorship candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside and all APC candidates for State House of Assembly elections on Saturday.
