  • Rivers Police Command warns vendors against sale of Naira notes

     The Rivers Police Command has warned those involved in the sales of Naira notes or defacing same, to desist or face the full weight of the law.

    Mr Nnmadi Onmoni, the command’s spokesman, told our reporters in Port Harcourt on Thursday that it was illegal to sell Naira notes or spray people with same at social events.

    The spokesman, who was reacting to the alleged resumption of sale of Naira notes in Port Harcourt, said that only financial institutions had the constitutional right to trade in money.

    Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), also said it was illegal to write on the country’s currency note or deface it.

    The spokesman recalled that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) officials, Directorate of State Security (DSS) and the police had, in a joint operation in January, arrested 13 women engaging in the illegal business.

    “The relevant laws forbidding the sale of Naira notes, among similar offences, have not been repealed,” he said.

    The illegal business is thriving at Garrison bus-stop, Rumukwurushi and Rumuokoro areas of Port Harcourt metropolis.

  • Arms mop-up: Rivers Police command says it’s making progress

    The Police Command in Rivers said  on Friday that it had recovered more than 700 illegally acquired arms and was making progress in the arms mop up programme in the state.

    The command’s spokesman, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that the command was steadily recovering arms from some residents as ordered by the force headquarters.

    NAN recalls that the Inspector-General of Police (IG) Ibrahim Idris, had ordered members of the public who had illegally acquired arms in their possession to submit them to the police.

    The IG warned that anybody or group of persons that had such arms and failed to submit them at the expiration of a 21-day ultimate would be arrested and prosecuted.

    Consequently, an implementation task force was constituted in the command to enforce the arms mop up order.

    Omoni however said that the inspector-general of police had extended the earlier three weeks ultimatum by another three weeks.

    According to him, arrest and prosecution defaulters would commence at the end of the extended ultimatum .

  • Rivers Police command records success in forensic investigation

    The Rivers State Police command yesterday showcased the first fruit of their use of forensic technology to crack complicated investigative cases.

    The deputy commissioner of police, Magaji Ahmed, while parading two suspected killers of a staff of Shell contractor company, Alfamead Nigeria Limited, Cletus Onyekwele, in Port Harcourt, in April this year, said use of forensic technology has proven to be effective in criminal investigation.

    Onyekwele aged 40 years old was reportedly killed and abandoned in his office located inside the premises of shell Development Company Nigeria Limited, on April 13, 2017, by unknown persons.

    Ahmed said the command’s Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, with the use of the technology unravelled the killers of the victim three months after samples were sent to the forensic laboratory for analysis.

    Two persons, Kingsley Nwankor age 40 years and Joseph Francis 37 years are being held for their involvement in the killing, both staff members of MB & C investment, another sub-contractor with Shell.  Their arrest followed the report of the forensic investigation.

    “We are proud to inform you that the command has not only made a ground breaking achievement through the use of sophisticated forensic technology but has secured justice for the family of the deceased and equally guaranteed a safer environment for all workers and visitors within the SPDC industrial Area and members of the public at large,” they said.

     

     

    According to him, “particles picked from the scene of the murder were sent as exhibit to a forensic laboratory where the result that was released had the DNA of one Kingsley Nwankor, a staff of MB&C Investment Ltd., a sub-contracting firm to SPDC.”

    Nwankor said, “It is my colleague Francis that murdered him. Francis told me to follow him to discuss work with him (Cletus). We work for Cletus. Francis is my own supervisor. When we got to Cletus office they (Cletus and Francis) greeted and Francis started telling Cletus about work and Cletus grew angry and tried to slap Francis, but Francis dodged and fail down, I went and held Onyekwele to stop him from beating Francis, but Francis got up from the ground, picked a piece of plank and hit him (Onyekwere), the first time it was when he hit him again what I left him.”

    Police confirms attack on home of ex-Rivers lawmaker

    The Rivers Police Command has confirmed arsonists’ attack on the house of Dr Chidi Lloyd, a former leader in Rivers House of Assembly.

    The building is located at Akpabu in Emohua Local Government area of Rivers State.

    The spokesman for the command, Mr Nnamdi Omoni, a DSP, told newsmen in Port Harcourt on Friday that the police had received information on the attack.

    He said details of the incident were still sketchy, but the police were still working hard to get more details on the incident.

    Lloyd had told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Wednesday that his house had been burnt.

    “From the information I gathered, unknown gunmen, numbering about 20 in military uniform, came on motor bikes and went straight to my house in the village and set it ablaze.

    “It is a new building that I just finished. Everything inside the house was burnt down, but no life was lost,” he said.

    Lloyd said he had no problem with anybody and wondered why people would contrive to carry out arson against him.

    “I do not think that I have any previous problem with anybody. The only problem I have on earth is politics,” he said.

    Police rescues 14 abducted oil workers in Rivers

    The Rivers Police Command said it has rescued 14 oil workers abducted by unknown gunmen on Sept. 2 along Elele-Omoku road.

    The command`s spokesman, Mr Nnamdi Omoni, a DSP, said in a statement in Port Harcourt that the workers were freed in the early hours of Sunday.

    Omoni said the Command`s Tactical Units, engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle, which lasted for one and half hours, to rescue the victims.

    “The Oil Workers were rescued unhurt due largely to the efforts of the Command’s Tactical Units, who, at the early hours of Sept. 18,engaged the hoodlums, in a fierce gun battle which lasted for one and half hours, leading to the rescue of the victims.

    “The hoodlums took to flight abandoning their hostages. Efforts are on to arrest and bring them to justice,” he said.

    Omoni said no ransom was paid to rescue the workers.

    “They have been debriefed and are receiving medical attention in the hospital.

    “Investigation is on-going at the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit,” he said.

    Omoni said that the police was determined to fight all forms of criminality and crime in the state.

    He appealed to residents to give the police useful information that would assist it achieve set objectives.

    Rivers Police arrest five Robbery suspects

    The Rivers Police Command said on Thursday that it had arrested five robbery suspects at a pipeline, in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area.

    DSP Ahmad Muhammad, the Public Relations Officer of the command, disclosed this in a statement in Port Harcourt.

    The statement said the suspects, all men, were arrested in the early hours of Thursday by a special team in charge of pipelines.

    It said weapons recovered from them were: two AK 47 rifles; one pump action gun; one bereta pistol; 19 rounds of assorted live ammunition; three magazines and eight cartridges.

    “ Preliminary investigation indicated that the gang was responsible for series of armed robbery and kidnappings around Ubima and environs, “it said.
