PDP crisis: Sheriff camp rejects BoT’s recommendations
The Ali Modu Sheriff camp of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the peace recipe offered by the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) to stem the festering leader ship crisis in the party.
The BoT had on Monday directed the removal of the Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike as chairman of the convention planning committee and the immediate disbandment of the panel.
The trustees had similarly ordered that a repeat convention by held in Abuja, instead of Port Harcourt, favoured by the Wike and the Ahmed Makarfi led caretaker committee of the PDP.
A statement on Tuesday by Dr. Cairo Ojougbo on behalf of the Sheriff camp, said the resolutions of the BoT fell short of the decisions reached with another reconciliation committee headed by the Bayelsa state Governor, Henry Seriake Dickson.
The camp has insisted on having Sheriff chair the next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting “where Makarfi will attend as a member of the BOT”.
“At the meeting, a chairman of the convention committee will be agreed upon, a new convention committee setup, including all other sub-committees like Zoning, Finance, Accreditation etc”, the statement added.
The faction demanded an enlarged meeting of stakeholders and members, where everybody will be given the right to air their views as prelude to genuine reconciliation.
The faction also rejected the vote of confidence passed on the caretaker committee by the BoT, on the ground that the committee had failed to organise a successful convention on two occasions.
The statement continued, “Consequently, we can now confidently inform the general public that well-meaning Nigerians have been urging Senator Makarfi to resign to save democracy.
“We therefore call on his friends and associates and family to advise him to do the needful and resign now to save multiparty democracy in Nigeria and stop impunity that has been the bane of internal democracy.
“That the BOT Chairman, Senator Walid Jubril, has brought crisis to the party. In any case his tenure has expired as he has spent more than 10 years as Secretary and Chairman of BOT which runs contrary to the party constitution.
“A party where we have imminently qualified persons like Senator David Mark, Babangida Aliyu and others cannot be led by unstable individuals controlled by the love for money.
“That the source of irritation in the party is the still-born illegal caretaker committee and the Board of Trustees should have advised that the illegality be addressed”.
The Sheriff camp also demanded the immediate reconstitution of the BoT, stressing that “until we get it right and check impunity, the Nigerian opposition party won’t perform as required”.
“As we move towards reconciliation, PDP should prevent any person or group from hijacking the party. Be rest assured that the PDP will emerge stronger as we note that impunity marred the party’s success in the 2015 general elections,” the statement added.

254 workers drag Wike to court over unpaid salaries
About 254 aggrieved teachers, whose salaries had not been paid since February 2016, filed a case against the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) sitting in Yenagoa,mBayelsa State.
The angry workers are teachers in primary and demonstration schools of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), and Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic (KSWP), Bori.
The teachers comprising 102 of RSUST, 97 of IAUE and 55 of KSWP are praying the court to compel the government to pay their salaries.
The governor reportedly announced in February 2016 that his administration would no longer pay the salaries of primary and secondary schools’ teachers in the affected institutions where pupils and students pay school fees.
Following Wike’s order in February, the teachers said their relevant institutions had refused to pay their salaries.
It was gathered that while the demonstration schools at KSWP were shut down following Wike’s directive, those of RSUST and IAUE were operating without school fees paid to the teachers.
The claimants (unpaid teachers) sued Wike for ordering the stoppage of their salaries praying the court to declare their appointments valid and subsisting.
Also joined in the suit were the Attorney-General of Rivers State (2nd defendant) and their various institutions – RSUST, IAUE and KSWP (3rd defendant).
In the reliefs sought by the claimants against the defendants, jointly and severally, they prayed the industrial court to declare that their respective employments were valid and subsisting.
They also appealed to the court to declare that they were entitled to the payments of their respective salaries, allowances and emoluments until they attain their respective ages of retirement in their various institutions.
They further sought a declaration that the 1st defendant’s directive stopping the payment of their salaries with effect from end of February 2016 was unlawful, null and void.
They also sought a declaration that the 1st defendant (Wike) had no right to order the discontinuance of the payment of their salaries with effect from February 2016.
The claimants asked the court to direct the defendants to pay them forthwith the arears of their respective salaries for the months of February, March, April and subsequently to continue to pay them their respective monthly salaries, allowances and other emoluments they were entitled to as and when due until they attain their retirement ages.
They prayed for an order of injunction restraining the defendants, whether by themselves or through their agents, privies and proxies from terminating, sacking, disengaging or in any way interfering with their employments.
When the matter came up for mention at the court, the lawyer for the claimants, Mr. Damian Okoro, said he had served necessary papers on the defendants since February 16, 2016.
He, however, wondered why the defendants had not deemed it fit to file their processes.
While urging the court for short adjournment, Okoro argued that the claimants were faced with severe difficulties following the stoppage of their salaries in February.
But the Principal State lawyer, Okogbule Gbassam, representing the defendants, said he would file the necessary court processes before the next adjourned date.
The court, which ruled that the matter was brought for mention and that the parties had yet to join issues, adjourned the case until July 12 for hearing.

“PDP can’t win 2019 election”
The Peoples Mega Party (PMP) on Friday describe the claim by Rivers state Governor, Nyelsom Wike that the PDP is being repositioned to reclaim power in 2019 as a day dream saying the party was doomed.
In a statement from his media aide, Anya Goodness, the National Chairman of the party, Chief Perfy Opara said the PDP cannot never rise again to win ah future election saying the party was comatose and in disarray.
He said Governor Wike should kill his optimism and concentrate on providing dividends of democracy to the people of Rivers State, adding that both Wike and Ebonyi state governor, Umahi will fight a battle of their life to get a second mandate in 2019.
He said further that “the PDP had five out of the 6 Area councils in the FCT and could not reclaim even one seat in the last concluded election in FCT. How then can such a party start thinking of 2019. The number of states controlled by PDP will reduce so embarrassingly in 2019.
“We are anxious to meet with PDP in the Anambra gubernatorial election in 2017. The Anambra election will test the popularity of the Mega Party and PDP’s might. PDP parades big names without followers and we shall expose that in 2017 election in Anambra.
“How can a party that cannot conduct successful primaries think of controlling the Federal Government again in 2019. PDP has reached its zenith and the law of diminishing return has caught up with them.
“My advice to PDP faithful who are young, credible and focused is to join the Party of the future; a Party that condemns impunity, high handedness, disregard to the rule of law, corruption and ineptitude. The Mega Party is the alternative platform.
“We want to remind Wike, Umahi and their likes that PDP faithful nationwide are moving into the Mega Party in grooves and after the watershed on the 21st of May, 2016, there will be a tsunami in the PDP that will culminate to an overflow of the Mega Party.
“Since the manifesto and the constitution of the PDP and the PMP are related in theory but different in practice, the tendency for people who believed in the dreams of Alex Ekwueme, Ken Nnamani, Senator Dalhatu Tafilda and other former Leaders of PDP will not look elsewhere.” -

Only those with hidden agenda, will work against the party.“For us in this geo-political zone, we have no other political party to run to, otherwise we will considered a conquered people. That is why we work hard to ensure that the party is sustained.”Speaking further, Governor Wike said: “When you give conditions to the party, it means you have something on your mind. These are people who could not go home to campaign for the party during the last elections. They remained in Abuja.
