Lawyers march for return to democratic governance in Rivers

A group of lawyers, known as Lawyers in Defence of Democracy, has taken to the streets to demand the restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State.

The group is calling on the United States and the international community to pressure the Federal Government to rescind its decision to suspend Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers House of Assembly.

The lawyers, led by their Country Director, Barr. Uche Chukwu Udeh Sylvester, argued that the declaration of a State of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu is unconstitutional.

In a letter to President Donald Trump, they urged him to intervene and pressure the Nigerian government to restore democratic rule in Rivers State.

They argued that the suspension of Fubara and the Assembly is a brazen attempt to undermine constitutional order.

The lawyers also condemned the National Assembly for ratifying the President’s decision, describing it as an assault on democracy.

They asked Tinubu to reconsider his stand and allow Governor Fubara to continue his work as democratically elected governor of the state.

“In an era where democracy is supposed to reign supreme giving democracy dividends to the masses, we have found ourselves at a crossroads, a sober moment of reckoning where constitutional order is being tested most brazenly,” the letter said.

“This could only have happened during the days of military juntas but we are not under the firm grip of a military dictatorship. At the moment, the country is being governed under a constitutional democracy that operates a presidential system of government.

“President Bola Tinubu should not have taken the decision because democracy is a learning process, and the judiciary has demonstrated the capability to resolve issues.

“The president should have allowed the various state organs to resolve the issues. It is not worthy that until recently, there was a crisis of local government administration in Osun State, which has not led to a declaration of a state of emergency.”

NBA kicks as Rivers govt queries Port Harcourt branch chair

The frosty relationship between the Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice-Admiral lbok Ibas (retd) and the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) has taken a new dimension following a query issued by the government to the Port Harcourt branch chairperson of NBA, Cordelia Eke.

It was gathered that the query was a direct response by the government to the recent statement of NBA, which Eke was among the eight signatories, condemning the actions of Ibas in Rivers.

The query issued to Eke was reportedly signed by the Director of Administration in the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, Ebiriemg Deresima, on behalf of the Solicitor-General & Permanent Secretary in the ministry.

The query had threatened full disciplinary actions against the NBA Chairperson, which might include dismissal from the civil service.

But the chairmen of the eight NBA branches in Rivers condemned the query, which accused Eke of “serious misconduct” and that her actions violated public service rules.

The eight branches of NBA in Rivers in another joint statement described the allegations as a plot to cow Eke and stifle dissenting voices among legal professionals in the state.

The chairmen said Eke did not issue the controversial communique in her capacity as a civil servant, but rather as the elected chairman of the Port Harcourt Branch, in line with her constitutional mandate within the NBA.

They said the first statement, which Eke co-signed, was issued after formal deliberations within the association reflecting the position of all NBA branches in Rivers on happenings in the state.

The NBA chairmen said their views were in line with the position of the NBA at the national level as articulated by the Association’s President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN.

They alleged that the query was part of efforts by the Sole Administrator to suppress free speech and dismantle democratic norms under the guise of maintaining peace.

They harped on their duty to uphold the rule of law and vowed not to be silenced in the face of intimidation.

NBA said: “The query to our brother Chairman is nothing but a ploy by which the Sole Administrator seeks to intimidate her into discontinuing her functions and duties as Chairman of NBA Port Harcourt Branch, and an attempt to intimidate lawyers in Rivers State and by extension other good people of Rivers State from standing up and speaking against executive rascality and impunity.

“It must be noted that the main objective of the Nigerian Bar Association is the promotion of the rule of law thus, as watchdog of the society, it is our duty to speak truth to authority on behalf of lawyers and the general public and cannot be intimidated to shy aware from this sacred responsibility.

“Consequently, we, the Chairmen of NBA Branches in Rivers State, condemn in its entirety the query issued to our Brother Chairman of NBA Port Harcourt Branch and demand an immediate withdrawal of the same.

“We consider the issuance of this query to our brother Chairman as an unfortunate act the Sole Administrator has decided to use to suppress freedom of speech and constitutional rights of the good people of Rivers State against his various incidences of dismantling of peaceful democratic institutions already in existence in Rivers State and other acts and actions capable of causing breach of peace instead of maintaining the peace which was the primary claim for his appointment as Sole Administrator in Rivers State. We condemn in its entirety the query issued to our colleague and demand its immediate withdrawal”.

The statement was signed by Dr. Hilda Desmond-Ihekaire, Chairman, Ahoada Branch; Simple Dioha, Esq., Chairman, Isiokpo Branch; Abiye Abo, Chairman, Degema Branch; Dr. N. A. Duson, Chairman, Bori Branch; and Dr. Celestine Nwankwo, Chairman, Okehi Branch.

The Executive Director, YEAC-Nigeria, Dr. Fyneface Fyneface,  said the explosion resulted in an inferno that razed the building.

He said: “The inferno is said to have occurred in a house where people purchased and stored illegally refined petroleum products including condensate for resale in the area.”

Fyneface also renewed his call on the Federal Government to legalise artisanal refineries in the Niger Delta through the establishment of its July 27, 2020 proposed Presidential Artisanal Crude Oil Refining Development Initiative (PACORDI) and modular refineries for artisanal refiners in the Delta region.

JUST IN: Rivers PDP NASS caucus endorses Tinubu’s re-election in 2027

Members of the Rivers Caucus in the National Assembly have thrown their weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

The caucus, which comprises two senators and seven House of Representatives members, all of whom are members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urged other aspirants to shelve their ambitions, stating that Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda remains “the surest path to Nigeria’s prosperity and progress.”

In a statement read by Senator Barry Mpigi on Saturday in Port Harcourt signed by all members, the Rivers NASS Caucus said their decision was informed by the visible successes of the Tinubu administration, which they described as “working and on course.”

The lawmakers praised Tinubu’s economic policies, saying they are targeted at repositioning the nation’s struggling economy.

The statement reads:“We, the members of the National Assembly from Rivers State, comprising Senators and Members of the House of Representatives, extend our heartfelt gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his trust and confidence in our leader, His Excellency Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, following his appointment as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. We are gladdened by the President’s public acknowledgement and commendation of the exceptional performance of the Minister of FCT, whom he described as the ‘Master of Infrastructure.’”

Reflecting on the economic situation Tinubu inherited, they noted: “Now, having carefully reviewed the President’s economic policies which are targeted at repositioning our once moribund economy through his Renewed Hope Agenda, and taking into account the massive rot and decadence he inherited on the 29th of May, 2023—including our unenviable debt profile and the terrible inflationary figures occasioned by the printing of N22.7 trillion by the Central Bank of Nigeria through Ways and Means overdraft for the Federal Government between 2015 and 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“And the near-absence of critical infrastructure to support food production; we have come to the conclusion that the President’s economic plan is the surest way out of our country’s social and economic morass. Further, our assessment is firm that the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda is very much on track with already visible results and a credible basis that offers greater improvement in the economic wellbeing of Nigerians if given the necessary time. Still, we are convinced that the declining inflation figures, the substantial reduction in our foreign debt profile, and an IMF-backed promising growth figure all bode well for the economy in the years ahead.”

The lawmakers also commended Tinubu’s swift intervention in the political crisis that rocked Rivers State, describing it as a move that “has set the process of peace in motion, even as we pray and hope to see a clear path to an enduring peace built on sincerity of purpose.”

“We worked assiduously under the leadership of Nyesom Wike for the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. And we were victorious in that assignment.”

Reaffirming their commitment ahead of the next general election, they said:

“As members of the National Assembly from Rivers State, we declare unequivocally our unconditional resolve to work again for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu come 2027.

“As legislators who are closest to the people, we shall begin the mother of all mobilizations of our people to repeat in greater measure what we did in 2023 in order to re-elect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Finally, we call on all Nigerians to support the consolidation of the Renewed Hope Agenda as the surest panacea for the prosperity and progress of Nigeria. And, in this connection, we appeal to would-be presidential candidates, especially those with desperate and never-ending presidential ambitions, to jettison such ambition and rally round our dear President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) in 2027.”

The nine caucus members are Senator Barry Mpigi, Senator Allwell Onyesoh, Rt. Hon. Dumnamene Dekor, Solomon Bob, Hon. Felix Nwaeke, Hon. Kelechi Nwogu, Cyril Hart, Victor Obuzor, and Blessing Amadi.

  • Refund N300m Rivers donation to restore public trust, lawyers tell NBA

Refund N300m Rivers donation to restore public trust, lawyers tell NBA

The Public Interest Lawyers League (PILL) has urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to refund the controversial N300 million donation it received from the Rivers State Government under Governor Siminalayi Fubara, saying the move is necessary to restore public trust and safeguard the Bar’s moral authority.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, its President Dr. Abdul Mahmud, said the non-disclosure of the donation, which came to public attention through a statement by the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, has raised serious questions about transparency and ethical conduct within the NBA.

“This is not just about money, it’s about principle, accountability, and the integrity of an institution that has long positioned itself as a guardian of the rule of law.

“The NBA must take immediate steps to return the N300 million to the Rivers State Government. Doing so would demonstrate a clear commitment to ethical leadership and institutional responsibility,” Mahmud said.

Beyond the call for a refund, PILL also demanded the resignation of Afam Osigwe, SAN, President of the NBA, and Emeka Obegolu, SAN, Chairman of the NBA Annual General Conference Planning Committee.

According to the group, these resignations are not punitive but necessary to rebuild confidence in the Association.

“We believe the current leadership must step aside in the interest of accountability and to allow for a thorough review of the NBA’s financial dealings.

“Professional associations must be held to the same standards they expect of others, and when issues of this magnitude arise, leadership responsibility must be taken,” he said.

The controversy has also reignited debate around the relocation of the NBA’s 2025 Annual General Conference from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Enugu.

PILL questioned whether the relocation was a strategic move to deflect attention from the scandal and called on the Planning Committee to offer a full explanation of the reasons and financial implications behind the decision.

Mahmud added that transparency should be non-negotiable in professional institutions, particularly where public funds or sensitive matters are involved.

“The Bar cannot afford to be seen as operating in secrecy or appearing complicit in actions that could undermine its standing,” he said.

To chart a path forward, PILL also called on the NBA to publish a full and audited account of all funds received in connection with the 2025 Annual General Conference; convene an emergency General Meeting to discuss the implications of the scandal; and establish an independent panel, made up of past NBA Presidents and respected legal figures, to recommend reforms aimed at strengthening financial transparency and internal accountability.

“This is an opportunity for the NBA to show leadership, not just to lawyers, but to the country. The credibility of the Bar matters. We must hold ourselves to the standards we expect of others,” he said.

He further encouraged members of the legal profession not to remain silent.

“This is your Association. This is your profession. We urge every lawyer who believes in justice and ethics to speak out, engage, and demand the reform our Bar so urgently needs,” he said.

Four suspected killers of Rivers celebrity tailor die in gun battle with police

Four suspects connected to the abduction and brutal murder of celebrity fashion designer, Hope Georgewill, CEO of HMG Attitude Limited, have been killed in a gun battle with the police in Rivers State.

Georgewill, a well-known tailor in the region, was kidnapped along with two others on March 26, 2025, by a gang of notorious sea pirates led by Preye Ngian-Ngian, a native of Degema Local Government Area.

The incident occurred along the Cotton Channel, Bakana River.

Ibas calls on CAN to support Rivers peace process

The Administrator of Rivers State, retired Vice-Admiral Ibok Ibas has appealed to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rivers State Chapter, to support efforts to restore peace, reconciliation and stability in Rivers.

A statement signed by the SSA Media Hector Igbikiowubo, said Ibas spoke during an engagement with CAN leaders at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

The administrator emphasised the importance of the Church’s moral guidance in restoring harmony and extended Easter felicitations, describing the season as a reminder of hope, sacrifice, and unity.

Ibas acknowledged the recent declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, which led to his appointment as Administrator.

He said his mandate was to restore law and order; stabilise the polity and pave the way for the return of democratic governance.

He said since assuming office on March 20, 2025, he had engaged in broad consultations with civil society, traditional rulers and local government officials to rebuild trust and foster cooperation.

The administrator urged CAN to preach peace in congregations and communities; promote unity across ethnic, political, and denominational divides; encourage forgiveness and reconciliation among citizens, and serve as a beacon of hope amid fear and uncertainty.

He said: “The unity of the church is the seedbed for the unity of the State,” he stated. “Where the Church leads in love, the people will follow in peace.”

He urged Ibas to ensure that critical aspects of governance were not ignored during the period of emergency rule, especially as it affected the environmental sanitation.

  • Rivers, clash of protests and Tompolo

Rivers, clash of protests and Tompolo

Rivers State was last week preoccupied with a clash of organised women protests for and against the proclamation of a state of emergency. First to gather were the anti-emergency protesters who, two Fridays ago, sallied out almost from nowhere into the streets of Ahoada East local government area decrying the proclamation of a state of emergency in the state, and calling for the restoration of democracy. They were estimated to be about a few hundreds, and were clad in black. Piqued by the silence of the group of protesters when the fierce battle for the soul of the state raged between the Governor Siminalayi Fubara crowd and the ex-governor Nyesom Wike troops before state of emergency, a second but unrelated group of protesters poured into the streets of Port Harcourt on Monday in a startlingly far greater number. The second group decried the hypocrisy of the first group, and enthused that the state of emergency proclamation secured peace when all portents showed that anarchy was imminent. From the tone of the second group, and the tenor of their dressing, it was clear that peace, much more than the merits or demerits of the state of emergency proclamation itself, was uppermost in their minds.

But not to be outdone, and unwilling to concede both the last laugh and slogan to the pro-emergency ‘peace’ protesters who rallied under the banner of Rivers Women for Peace and Good Governance, the anti-emergency protesters again rallied pari passu with the pro-emergency group in a different part of Port Harcourt under the aegis of Rivers Women Unite Prayer Group. However, noting the disparity in law enforcement control of the protests, Mr Fubara openly chafed at the unfairness of the police in allegedly repressing the anti-emergency crowd. He should have kept quiet. Unable to restrain himself, it was interpreted that he was lending support to the anti-emergency protesters, a trait he earlier exhibited when he failed to condemn pipeline vandals presumably trying to preempt the House of Assembly from impeaching him in the heat of the crisis in early March.

Proclaimed on March 18, the state of emergency in Rivers is expected to last six months. During the period, it is expected that tempers would cool down between warring factions, the governor would be more statesmanlike, the House of Assembly less combative, and the state’s elders more diplomatic and conciliating. While most members of the elders group have sensibly kept quiet, and the lawmakers have distanced themselves from state activities, Mr Fubara has kept on talking. Before the state of emergency, he had acted and given the impression that he could browbeat both his enemies in and outside the legislature as well as the federal government into backing down from their intransigent positions. After the Supreme Court put paid to his effort to continue ostracising the Assembly, gave him a piece of their minds, and ordered that he should relate properly with the House of Assembly, he embarked on subterranean moves to undermine the judgement by feigning obedience to the rule of law. He was adamant about the justification of his cause, and was determined not to have his enemies laugh last.

That headiness has unfortunately continued. There is nothing, short of plotting a coup, that can unmake or reverse the state of emergency. Even if the country were to descend into anarchy, the state of emergency would still not be reversed. If Mr Fubara had this understanding, he would have declined to give support to any protests in his favour, restrained himself from commenting on state activities, whether by the sole administrator or any other caretaker officials, and shrugged off accusations about any financial malfeasance. If he must speak, it would be wise to talk about peace, support the sole administrator to reestablish law and order, and invite stakeholders and aggrieved indigenes to work for the peace, unity and progress of the state, even if he does not mean a word of what he says. Rather than secretly harbouring the unrealistic desire to upturn the emergency proclamation, his paramount goal should be to ensure that the state of emergency does not exceed the six months proclaimed by the president. He may not be the wisest governor to find himself in a similar position, but he needs to read the emergency proclamation again, especially the part that talks about the ‘six months in the first instance’ provision. If the crisis continues, if the swords are not sheathed in six months, if the combatants are still squaring off and warring recklessly, and if there are still threats to critical national infrastructure, the emergency period might be extended. And like all sides to the conflict in Rivers say, heavens will not fall.

Mr Fubara’s goal must, therefore, be to ensure that the six months emergency rule should not be extended. The ball is in his court; but so far he has proved quite awkward in kicking the ball. He doesn’t even appreciate the gravity of his situation, and lacks the acumen to conciliate his enemies. He talks glibly about democracy, but he has undermined it at every turn and by every remark. Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, the pipeline protection contractor and notable Ijaw son, has said that Mr Fubara would return to office after the six months of emergency. It is not clear what gave him the confidence to make that pronouncement, but he should instead counsel his kinsman to mollify his rage and resentment against real and perceived enemies. The governor’s return is not in the hands of well-wishers, or the constitution, or animated protesters, or even the rule of law. His predicament rests on his absolute ineptitude in managing dissent and provocations. Only he can determine how the Rivers crisis would play out. Only he. And so far, he has not given anyone the confidence that he can make the difference the Rivers situation desperately urges him.

Suspended Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara has appealed to the people of the state to keep supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Fubara, in a statement he personally signed to mark Easter, reinstated his commitment to deliver good governance in the state.

Describing Easter as a sacred season of reconciliation and unity, Fubara said during the celebration the peace of Christ should dwell in the hearts, restoring relationships, comforting the afflicted, feeding the hungry, and healing the brokenhearted.

He said: “It is a time to reaffirm our shared belief that peace shall overcome war, and that even shattered dreams can find new life in the light of the resurrection.
