    Two AAU final students die in road accident

    Two students of the Edo State–owned Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, have died in a road accident that occurred during their sign-out celebration.

    The students reportedly joined a motorcade after completing their final examinations and were travelling in a convoy around Ujoelen Junction along the Ekpoma–Auchi Expressway when the incident happened.

    Although their identities were yet to be confirmed at press time, eyewitnesses said the victims attempted to overtake a moving truck but rammed into a stationary vehicle.

    Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cyril Mathew, confirmed the incident, explaining that one person died while five others sustained injuries.

    According to him, “The students, after writing their last paper, entered the road in a convoy. In the process, one of them overtook another vehicle and rammed into a stationary truck.”

    Road accident reportedly claims 19 lives in Oyo

    No fewer than nineteen passengers was said to have lost their lives on Sunday, April 14, in a road mishap that occured at kilometre 3, Sabo, Oyo-Ogbomoso expressway.

    The Nation gathered that the accident involved a Sokoto bound white Toyota HIACE 18 seater bus with registration number NTT 522 ZY and black Toyota salon car.

    The Nation learnt that the victims died on the spot while the only survivor is receiving medical treatment at Opabode Hospital, Oyo.

    The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission, (FRSC) Joshua Adekanye who confirmed the incident blamed the accident on disregard for traffic law.

    According to him, “the incident involved a sokoto bound commercial bus and Corolla salon car. It happened at 7:45 pm at Kilometre 3, Sabo area along Oyo-Ogbomoso expressway

    Out of the 20 passengers on board of the two affected vehicles, 19 died on the spot while the survivor is receiving medical attention at the neighborhood hospital.

    “The corpses of the victims has been deposited at the General Hospital Oyo.

    “The drivers of the two vehicles were among the victims that died on the spot.

    “The deceased driver of the Toyota HIACE was on a wrong lane to Oyo and collided with the Toyota Corolla salon car.”

    The sector Commander however appealed to road users to always be conscious of the traffic rules.

  • Road accident claims 16 lives in Kano

    No fewer than 16 persons were feared dead on Friday night in an auto crash involving three commercial vehicles at Tukwi village along Dambatta-Daura road in Kano state. The victims, it was gathered, were heading to Daura in Katsina state when the incident occurred. A leader in the community, Wakilin Garin Dambatta, Muhammad Jamil Dambatta, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

    He said 17 persons were involved in the accident, including 14 males and three females. He said while 14 persons died immediately at the scene, two of the three injured persons later died at the hospital. He blamed over speeding for the accident, adding that security operatives, including officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) swiftly rushed the victims to Dambatta General Hospital.

    The dead bodies, according to him, were deposited at the hospital morgue. When our correspondent visited the hospital, a source confirmed that 14 of the victims were brought in dead. The source also confirmed the remaining three injured victims, initially unconscious, all died later. The spokesman of FRSC, Kabiru lbrahim Daura, confirmed the accident, saying they recovered N.5m at the scene of the incident.

    Also, the Kano State Police Command has arrested a commercial tricycle operator, Abu Hussain, 19, of Maidile Quarters, Kano, for allegedly stabbing his 25-year-old colleague Mansur Ibrahim to death with scissors. The Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, who disclosed this in a statement in Kano, said the incident occurred around 2 pm on Friday.

  • Eight killed in Calabar New Year accident

    Eight persons were killed in a car crash along Ndidem Iso Road in Calabar, the Cross River State capital on New Year day around 2am.

    The Nation gathered the accident occurred when a speeding Toyota Camry car slammed into a taxi that was trying to make a U-Turn at the Apples’ axis of the road.

    One person sustained injuries in the accident.

    The taxi had seven occupants, five male and two female, including the driver, who died on the spot.

    The driver of the Camry vehicle, a young man, who had a female passenger in his vehicle, also died it was gathered.

    Only the young woman survived.

    The police confirmed the incident, declaring the bodies had been taken to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) mortuary.

  • Road accident kills two, injures two in Ogun State

    Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said two persons were killed while two others were injured in an accident involving two vehicles around Animashaun Estate on Idlroko road in Ogun on Saturday.

    Mr Adekunle Oguntoyinbo, Sango-Ota Unit Commander of FRSC, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the accident happened at about 5.30 p.m.

    Oguntoyinbo said that a Mack Truck with registration number AAA 330 XX heading towards Sango-Ota from Idi lroko lost control due to brake failure, crossed the road divider and rammed into a Mazda Car marked AAA 152 BK.

    “The corpses of the victims had been deposited at Ifo General Hospital, while the survivors were receiving treatment at General Hospital, Sango-Ota,” he said.

    He advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles were in proper condition and be cautious during the Yuletide in order to avoid unnecessary loss of lives. (NAN)

  • 21 killed in Iran road accident

    At least 21 people were killed in a collision between a passenger bus and a trailer carrying flammable materials in the Central Iranian Province of Isfahan, ISNA News Agency reported on Tuesday.

    The passenger bus was heading from Tehran to Kerman city in the southern part of the country, when the accident took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning, Javad Dorostkar from Isfahan police office told ISNA.

    19 passengers of the bus were killed on the spot, and two others died later in the hospital, said Dorostkar.

    Also, 25 people were injured as the huge fire engulfed the two vehicles.

    The rescue operators of the Red Crescent of Isfahn province have moved the injured to the hospitals in Dorud city, the report said.

    The bus hit the rear end of the tanker and further details about the cause of accident would be announced after the due investigations.

    In July 13, people were killed in a similar accident in Iran’ western Kurdistan province.

  • One dies in Ondo multiple road accidents

    Two separate road accidents reportedly occurred in Akoko area of Ondo state on Wednesday claiming one live.

    The first carnage involved a bus and commercial motorcycle rider (Okada)around 9pm,who sustained head injury.

    Eye witness said the victim was rushed to Ikare-Akoko Specialist Hospital by men of the Federal Road Safety Commission(FRSC) Ikare –Akoko.

    The Medical Director,Dr Wale Oguntuase confirmed that a man was brought to hospital with serious head injury which was quickly referred to Federal Medical Centre(FMC) Owo .

    The Unit Commander, FRSC,Ikare Akoko, Jimoh Basiru confirmed that his men carried him to FMC, Owo where he was confirmed dead.

    The second accident involved an oil tanker which detoured while climbing the ‘deadly’ Okerigbo hill.

    It took FRSC officials prompt intervention to supervise the off loading of the product to another trailer,while using a towing vehicle to remove the tanker from the busy highway.

    Basiru warned motorists against night journey,saying it is too risky.

    A spokesman of the community, Alhaji Ibrahim kilani urged Ondo state government to level up Okerigbo hill, Akungba Akoko like that of Oke-Alabojuto,Ikare Akoko where the government was doing a good job to reduce the dreadful hiIl.

    Kilani also hailed the state government for the completion of flooded areas such as Jubilee,Victory College and Bishop’s Court-Ugbe Akoko road that are now motorable.

    The Sango-Ota Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) yesterday said two persons died, with others  injured, in an accident involving three vehicles at Ilo-Awela Road in Sango-Ota, Ogun State.

    The Sango-Ota Unit Commander, Mr Adekunle Oguntoyinbo, who confirmed the accident in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota, said it occurred at 9.45 pm on Wednesday.

    Oguntoyinbo said a Mack truck, registered as (Lagos) LND615XP, and heading to Lagos from Ilo-Awela road, lost control and rammed into a Mazda bus: (Lagos) KSF102XD, and a tanker: (Lagos) APP273XP, while crossing the median.

    The unit commander said two of the 18 persons in the bus died. Others sustained injuries.

    “The bodies of the victims have been deposited at the morgue of General Hospital in Ota, while those injured are receiving intensive treatment at Lead Way Hospital, also in Ota,” he added.

    Oguntoyinbo urged motorists, who are not familiar with Sango-Ota terrain and its environs, to always drive carefully and ensure their vehicles are always in good condition.

  • 15 die in Ondo road crash

    No fewer than 15 passengers travelling along Epinmi-Isua Akoko in Ondo state reportedly died Tuesday in a road accident.

    Sources said the victims were travelling in a bus when the vehicle had a head on collision with an unregistered Tokunbo vehicle.

    It was learnt that the vehicles consequently caught fire which nearly consumed all occupants of the bus.

    An eye witness said the ‘Tokunbo’ vehicle which was driven by a military man was said to have overtaken a vehicle along the ever busy Epinmi-Isua-Abuja road.

    The Police Area Commander for Akoko, Razak Rauf who was on a routine trip to some divisions in the area confirmed the accident and attributed it to recklessness.

    A community leader and Chief Imam of Epinmi-Akoko,Alhaji Maliki Alimi lamented the incessant road carnage along the same route in recent time.

    It was learnt that men of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Ikare Akoko  unit immediately came for rescue operation.

    They reportedly evacuated the corpses to Ikare-Akoko Specialist hospital mortuary.

    It was also confirmed that the drivers of the two vehicles survived but sustained various degrees of injuries and now receiving treatment in the hospital.

  • Four die in Edo road accident

    Four persons have been confirmed dead while another one sustained injuries in an accident occurred at Jattu Junction in Auchi, Etsako West local government of Edo state.

    Eye witnesses said the accident occurred on Friday when a truck heading towards Benin from Abuja allegedly had brake failure and rammed into vehicles trapped in traffic at the junction.

    They said the truck loaded with cement killed four persons instantly.

    Head of Operation and Acting Sector Commander of the FRSC in Edo State, Samson Eniyemo, attributed the accident to break failure and over speeding.

    Samson said the accident involved two trucks and three other vehicles.

    He called on motorists to always observe safety caution and speed limit to save lives.
