He said that business will not blossom as long as there is bad road and people will stay away from it and not transport on the road. He stated that this is more of the reason to focus more on road infrastructure to ensure that business thrive and transportation can be done freely on the roads.

FG intensifies new approach to road construction

The Federal government (FG) has reiterated commitment to its newly introduced innovations to road construction in the country.

According to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, the new strategy focuses on boosting local content and implementing cost-effective engineering solutions to minimize project delays.

Consequently, he has instructed all controllers of works in the ministry to ensure that from now on, all contractors utilize a 70 percent stone base aggregate with only a 30 percent dust base for road construction projects.

He has also issued a 14-day termination ultimatum to a contractor for failing to justify the mobilization fund paid for the job he was executing.

Describing the new approach as a significant game-changer in the economic recovery agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration, the Minister stressed its objective of bolstering indigenous resources, skills, and capacities.

The initiative, according to him, aims to provide more opportunities for local contractors in the construction sector, particularly in the innovative use of concrete technology, especially in challenging terrains nationwide.

In a statement on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media, Uchenna Orji, the Minister addressed the issues on Friday during a project inspection tour of the East-West road and other roads in Edo and Delta States, where he expressed his impression of the quality of the ongoing projects.

Impressed by the remedial work being executed by indigenous contractor, True Tech Nigeria Ltd on flooded sections of the East-West Road in Delta, the Minister assured that his ministry would prioritize cost-effectiveness, wealth creation, and job opportunities for indigenous professionals and technicians.

Pledging to introduce engineering solutions aimed at minimizing delays in project delivery, the Minister was quoted as saying, “We have about 10 different washouts, which we are providing multiple culverts in place of a decompile, which would have been much more expensive.

“But our solution is very economical, and it will solve the engineering problems.

“And then we’re raising the road level above the flood level. And we are also using concrete pavement to do it.

“We’re also going to put solar light, at least let it be the signature of Mr. President, and that will be the microcosm of the macrocosm of what Nigerians should expect on our roads under the administration of Mr. President”.

  • Edo Govt’s SEEFOR Plus boosts road construction efforts

The Edo State Ministry of Infrastructure, the State Employment and Expenditure for Results (SEEFOR) and a new scheme wholly funded by the state government using the World Bank template, SEEFOR Plus, have intensified road construction work across the state.

In a statement, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, said road construction remains a key component of Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration’s vision to open up the state to socio-economic activities.

Osagie said, “we will not relent on road construction until we have a state, where driving through the streets and towns will be hassle-free. Central to this plan is the intent to open Edo State for business and bring development closer to our people.”

He explained that to ensure that a considerable number of roads get the needed attention, the Obaseki-led administration set up SEEFOR Plus, which utilises World Bank templates in funding projects, to complement road construction carried out by other agencies.

The governor’s aide said the state government through the Ministry of Infrastructure is also carrying out construction work on several other road projects across the state.

Among the roads being constructed are several streets behind School of Health Technology on Dumez Road as well as others on Erediauwa Street, linking Upper Sokponba and Sapele roads, in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area.

Construction work is progressing rapidly on streets in Ogbe Quarters, in Benin City, including the construction of drainage to evacuate flood water in the area.

Work is also progressing on the 1.3kilometre Jemide-Ibizugbe-Osamwonyi road executed by the state government and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

In Edo Central Senatorial District, the Iruekpen-Ekpoma Road, Welfare Road in Ekpoma and several other roads are being constructed.

  • Road construction: Bravo Ambode but…

Even sceptics and opposition parties will commend Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for the gigantic strides in massive road construction on-going in Agege, Ifako-Ijaiye, Ojokoro and other areas of the state. It is not easy but my observations for improvements are as follows:

It is regrettable that there are no proper organisations for such massive works going on in the rainy season. There are no signs/ diversions especially when major roads are blocked by culverts and/or heavy road equipments.

There is also indiscriminate pulling down of fences of houses resulting in increased robberies, hold-ups, untold hardship to road users, vehicles and pedestrians alike.

Also, the use of inexperienced architects and lack of enough civil drainage engineers on site are leading to adequate services because they don’t work at night so the work can’t be completed in record time.

Lack of adequate monitoring by professionals and on the spot assessments of works done should be regular to ensure standards.

I also suggest that there should be avenues for offering suggestions on site while the quality of asphalts should be checked to ensure they are done well.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, on Friday flagged off the construction of the Ibadan Circular Road estimated to cost about N70 billion, which will boost the socio-economic development and transportation system in the state.

Speaking at the flag-off held at Badeku Village in Ona-Ara Local Government Area, the governor said the 32km first phase of the 110km road would be completed within 18 months.

He said the first phase of the project, which would start from Badeku Village and end at Ajanla Village on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, representing the Northeast corner of the project, was awarded to the ENL Consortium Limited.

According to the governor, the project will be financed through a facility sourced from the Nexim Bank of China by the contractor on a “Build, Operate and Transfer“ arrangement between the ENL and the state government.

Ajimobi said: “This project is at no cost to Oyo State government; our partner (ENL Consortium) shall raise fund to finance it on the basis of ‘build, operate and transfer’ as part of our public-private partnership agreement.

“Nexim Bank of China will provide the fund because of their belief in the expertise and international best practice of our partner for whom we are guarantor’’.

Describing the project as a dream which had remained unfulfilled until his administration successfully brought it into fruition, Ajimobi said, when completed, it would further enhance the socio-economic development of the state.

The representative of the Olubadan of Ibadan land, High Chief Lekan Balogun; the Eleruwa of Eruwa, the Onpetu of Ijeru, the Onjo of Okeho, who all spoke at the occasion, applauded the government for the modern trend of development introduced being introduced into the state.

  • Road construction: Residents laud Ambode

Residents of Ikuomola Street in Alimosho Local Government Area have praised Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, over the construction of their road.

They spoke yesterday when the Special Adviser to the Governor and Chief Executive Officer of Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC), Mr. Ayotunde Sodeinde led officials of the corporation to inspect the construction.

A resident, Mrs Olawunmi Caroline, said the governor’s intervention would put an end to the age long suffering residents in the area have been going through.

“This road was in a deplorable state that even okada riders refused to ply once it rains. Our children that go to school have fallen inside the flood, besides no vehicle can come into the street, but everything changed recently when we saw bulldozer coming into the street to commence construction.”

She said since then, the excitement of residents has known bounds, adding that the road when completed would boost economic activities of the people living there.

Another resident, Folashade Adeboye, who owns a property on the street, said it was the first time a functional road was being constructed in the street.

“I have lived here since 1982 and this is the first time that road is being constructed here. I am particularly excited because the values of our properties will appreciate.”

Sodeinde said work commenced on the road in February adding that the road will be delivered before the end of the month.

“When we first came to look at the road we could not drive in as the whole street was flooded. But we can see from what the residents are saying that the situation has now changed.

“I honestly did not know how this road was discovered by the governor, this can tell you that he is a man that has his eyes everywhere in the state and has promised to spread development to all,” he said.

  • Lagos opens bid for award of contracts for 181 LG roads

Lagos opens bid for award of contracts for 181 LG roads

The Lagos State Government has commenced the process of awarding contracts for the construction of a total of 181 community roads across the 57 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the State, in line with the promise made by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

The initiative to rehabilitate the roads within the communities was introduced in 2016 by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration to fast-track development simultaneously with other major road projects across the State.

By the initiative, a total of 114 roads were either constructed or rehabilitated two per each of the 57 Councils in 2016, while in a bid to consolidate on the massive infrastructural drive of his administration, Governor Ambode last Thursday announced readiness to increase the number of the roads from 114 to 181.

According to the Invitation for Bids (IFB) which had since been published in major national dailies, the government announced the list of the roads and specification for the construction which include drainages, street lights and walkways.

The IFB also include the length, average width, number of roads, pavement and the duration for the project which is six months, while all bids must be submitted on or before February 17, 2017.

Speaking at the first Quarterly Town Hall Meeting for 2017, the sixth in the series, held at the Ajelogo Housing Scheme, Ajelogo Market Road, Akanimodo, Mile 12, Governor Ambode had said that with the latest plan, some of the councils will now have more than two roads especially in areas where there is need to fix other adjourning roads to a main road to improve on the road network.

The Governor said the need to scale up the road improvement efforts arose from the fact that he had received many requests on rehabilitation of roads from residents, adding that many of the roads captured for 2017 were key roads that would have positive economic impact on the people.

“I want to pronounce here that you should watch out next week in the newspapers, we are advertising 181 roads which would be done in all our local governments.

“What we have found out is that if we decided to continue with two, some of those roads are not linking each other to the main road, so most likely you would see that if we are supposed to do some roads in some local governments, it would only make economic sense if there is a linkage.

“So, you would see in the advert that some local governments would have like three, some would have four roads, but the average is 181 and if you divide that by 57, that would be a minimum of three roads from each local government,” Governor Ambode said.

  • Wike boasts: ‘I’ve silenced leaders who play politics with road construction’

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, yesterday in Port Harcourt, stated that he resolved to construct the Eliozu-Rumunduru-Elimgbu (Oro-Igwe) Road in the state capital to put an end to the false political promises being made by unnamed failed politicians to deceive the people.

Wike, in company with his counterpart of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, the self-acclaimed leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also yesterday inaugurated 42 roads in the densely-populated Diobu, Port Harcourt suburb.

Rivers governor stated that he had to silence persons who had been playing politics with the construction of roads in the state, by denying communities political projects, on account of their political persuasion.

The Oro-Igwe road was completely impassable, as at the time Wike awarded its construction to Chinese construction giant, CCECC.

In appreciation, the Oro-Igwe people conferred the chieftaincy title of Omenma Eli 1 of Oro-Igwe on the Rivers governor.

The Oro-Igwe traditional council stated that Wike was the first Rivers governor to remember the town.

Rivers governor said: “We had to construct the Oro-Igwe Road to end the era of lies and deception perpetrated by politicians over the years, using the name of this road. Finally, the people of Oro-Igwe will not have unhindered access to their homes and businesses.”

Inaugurating the Oro-Igwe road, a former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, lauded the Rivers governor for implementing the development programmes of the party.

At the Rukpokwu-Eneka Road, Wike said the road had to be reconstructed because of its economic importance.

In his remarks, while inaugurating the Rukpokwu-Eneka road, a former Rivers governor, Sir Celestine Omehia, described the Rivers governor as a child of destiny, who had come to transform the state.

Wike also renamed Nelson Mandela (SARS) Road as Sir Celestine Ngozichim Omehia Road, while he stated that the Rumuaholu Road, which he inaugurated, would stimulate economic growth in the area.

The Sir Celestine Omehia road was inaugurated by the Rivers Deputy Governor, Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo.

The Rivers governor was accompanied to the inauguration of the projects by the Governor of Ekiti State, Peter Ayodele Fayose; a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austin Opara; ex-Minister of Transport, Dr. Abiye Sekibo; members of the National and State Assemblies.

Wike on Saturday also declared the Operation Zero Potholes programme of his administration a huge success, stressing that it had restored 42 roads in the Diobu suburb of the state.

Fayose, also on Saturday, inaugurated the Bishop Okoye Street in Diobu, and lauded the people of Rivers State for retrieving the state’s mandate from “aliens” who stole the resources of the state.

Wike personally inaugurated Azikiwe Street road on the point where he kicked off the Operation Zero Potholes programme on May 29, 2015.

Rivers governor stated that the state government expended N4.3 billion to reconstruct 42 roads, totalling 22.5 kilometres in the densely-populated Diobu axis.
