Council chief hails governor for road repairs

The Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Kayode Adejare Omiyale, has hailed Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for constructing Tokunbo/Ishola streets in the LCDA.

The chairman said it is an historic partnership between the state government and the LCDA to bring succour to the residents.

Tokunbo/Ishola streets are the best options to escape the huge traffic on the popular Herbert Macaulay road.

It is a strategic way to link the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and other important places to safe travelling time on the mainland.

Omiyale urged the Community Development Associations (CDAs) on Tokunbo/Ishola streets to monitor the contractor in order to achieve the best results.

The LCDA chief said it had become the responsibilities of the CDAs and the landlord associations to speak with mechanics on the road.

He said mechanics are not supposed to turn the roads into their workshops.

Omiyale said: “We, the residents, will need to decide consciously whether to have a good road or a bad road.

“If we are determined to have good roads, we need to apply necessary sanctions on those who deface the roads.”

  • Ibeju Lekki begins road repairs

The Chairman of Ibeju Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, Olorunkemi Surakat, has kick-started the rehabilitation of bad roads on Ajah-Epe Expressway.

The chairman inspected projects, council’s properties and road rehabilitation in the local government yesterday.

Surakat said his team had begun work on the Ibeju-Age Road. He pledged that the repair work would move to Bogije and Awoyaya roads before the end of the week.

He said: “A spot on the Ibeju-Age Road has cut into two. So, we need to attend to it urgently so that people plying the road can have good movements. We notice that a journey of between two to three minutes on that road now takes over 30 minutes because of the bad road. That’s why we did it first. We are taking it from there to the other roads.

“Although it is a state road, it is also a major road. So, we cannot ignore it. Instead, we decided to complement the state government’s efforts by working on the roads that our little resource can repair.”

Surakat said capital projects were his major concern, adding that his administration had earmarked other projects to work on.

He said: “The expectation is 60 per cent capital projects to be put in place. During my first tenure, I was able to do a lot of projects; I don’t expect to do less during this new tenure. The expectation is that the second tenure must be better than the first tenure.”

The council chief said his local government was happy with the development the state government brought to Ibeju Lekki.

He pledged that his administration will take advantage of this to take the local government to a higher level.

Surakat said: “We have the Free Trade Zone, we have Dangote refineries, we have a proposed airport, we have a proposed seaport. But we are still expecting more. Apart from this, my administration will do a lot on education, upgrade health care centres and, most especially, tourism. We will tap into all the benefits of tourism that Ibeju Lekki has to offer.

“For example, we want to look at the beach side of the local government, popularly called Eleko Beach. We want to develop it so that we can attract people from far and near.”

Residents laud Ambode over repair of Abule Egba roads

Some residents of Abule Egba on Sunday commended Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode for fulfilling his pledge to carry out comprehensive repair of all the inner roads damaged as a result of the construction of Abule Egba Bridge.

The construction of the bridge, which was completed within thirteen months, led to many of the adjoining roads in the area to be in deplorable state due to congestion occasioned by traffic diversion.

Many of the residents had urged the Governor to come to their aid by fixing the roads to complement the good work that had been done with the construction of the bridge.

At the commissioning of the Abule Egba Bridge on May 17, 2017, Governor Ambode assured residents of the area that all the adjoining and alternative roads disrupted in the course of the construction of the Bridge would be fixed, as all had been awarded for rehabilitation.

True to his word, less than two weeks after the commissioning, contractors have moved to site to begin the rehabilitation of the inner roads in Abule Egba including Charity Road.

The rehabilitation of the roads is expected to further enhance traffic flow in the area, which since the opening of the flyover has greatly improved movement in and around the axis.

Speaking with our correspondent on Sunday, a resident of Ile-Ogbo in Abule Egba, Mrs Temitope Oyekunle commended the Governor for keeping his words, saying that the development had brought relief to people of the area.

“On the day of the commissioning of the Abule Egba Bridge when Governor Ambode made the pronouncement that our roads would be fixed, personally I expressed doubt judging by the number of projects that have been carried out in our axis by his administration but true to the Governor’s words, contractors moved to site as announced and they are working at a fast pace.

“I just want to commend the Governor for this and urge him to keep up the good works,” Oyekunle said.

Another resident, Mr Olakunle Joseph said the quality of work being done on the inner roads was commendable, and it shows the seriousness of the government of the day to truly transform all parts of the State.

Joseph, who resides at Beckley Estate in the area, said the Governor and his team deserved to be given a pat on the back for their tireless efforts to move the State forward.

Also speaking, Mrs Tolani Festus who is a shop owner in the area, said the transformation being witnessed in Abule Egba and its environs was unprecedented in the history of the State.

Obaseki threatens to use council fund for road repairs

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has threatened to use part of the monthly allocation for Owan East local government to effect repairs on the failed section of the Ihievbe-Afuze.

A large portion of the road has caved into a gully due to the blocked drainage.

Governor Obaseki issued the threat when he paid an unscheduled visit to the secretariat of Owan East after he inspected the failed section and discovered that the council officials failed to clear the drainage when it was blocked.

He was also peeved that the council officials did not put any sign on the road to warn motorists about the death trap ahead.

When Obaseki entered the secretariat, the council officials at duty began making phone calls to alert senior officials of the governor’s presence but the senior officials were not at their duty post.

“Is this how you work?” Obaseki fired at the council’s Public Relation Officer, Mr. Edikpe Samson, who came out to welcome the Governor.

Obaseki continued, “You Just come to work when you want. You failed to clear the drains and caused that problem on the road.

“We are going to use your funds to clear the drainage. We will use your fund to fix the problem.”

The PRO attempted to explain that the volume of water caused the road to collapse but the Governor interjected saying the drainages were blocked.

“Go there and clear up the drains. There is no barriers on the road to warn motorists. Go and put a concrete barrier there on the road today.”

Obaseki however urged members of the community to always protect government assets in their domain.
