  • ‘We are KILLED, ROBBED, KIDNAPPED on a daily basis’

MONDAY Ogo is a commercial driver. He plies the Yenagoa-Port Harcourt road through the popular East- West Road. On that route, he hustles back and forth, every day, to earn his livelihood but sometime in November, last year, Ogo encountered death in common hours, along Rumugi and Emogha in the Rivers State axis of the road. He was attacked while making his daily rounds by suspected kidnappers. Reliving his ordeal, he said, that the hoodlums emerged from a nearby bush, brandishing guns, machetes and other weapons.

They faced his vehicle and started shooting thus creating panic. “That is their style. They will always come out of the bush and suddenly they will open fire to forcefully stop the driver. When the driver refuses to stop, they will shoot the driver and abduct the passengers. “After that they took us into the bush.

They blindfolded us and made us walk several kilometres into the bush. Those who could not walk fast, they used their matchetes to hit them thus forcing them to walk fast. “When we got to a point in the thick forest, they tied us and brought food to us. The food was nonsense. I refused to eat because the food did not look good.

I stayed three days there without food. I only prayed for God to come to my rescue and God truly intervened,” he said. Narrating his escape from the kidnappers’ den, Ogo said: “I was sitting in the midst of men that had guns with them. I heard a voice telling me to run. I heard that voice twice. I was no longer tied. So, when I heard the voice the third time, I sprang to my feet and took off. Before they realized it, it was dusk and I was beyond their reach. They did not know where I hid in the cover of darkness.

They passed by my hiding place and I took a separate route, tiptoeing until I escaped. “I had no money and I had been stripped to my boxer shorts. It was a terrible experience.

I don’t wish that my enemy suffers such experience. By the time I escaped, there were three men and three women in captivity of the kidnappers but they were too scared to join me. I cannot explain how I managed to escape till now. It can only be God.” Ogo’s nasty experience is one too many.

The Rumugi-Emogha-Elele axis of the East-West Road is widely acknowledged as a death trap, where kidnappers and armed robbers operate in careless abandon. For a long time, the hoodlums have converted the area to their killing field thus wasting the lives of commuters plying the road.

The forest, where the criminals operate unchallenged seems impregnable and as a result, most people now refer to it as the “Sambisa Forest.” Most people are aggrieved that the nightmare has continued without urgent intervention by security agencies. Recently a 16-passenger bus was attacked on the road and all the passengers were abducted by the assailants. Despite many police checkpoints along the road, the crime had continued unabated, said Ogo.

According to him, “Abomination is going on in that bush. In our presence, they killed and slaughtered people. They killed people especially those that could not pay the ransom. When they kill them, they dismember them and sell their parts to buyers. People were coming to buy human parts there. So, the government should not say they are not aware of what is happening.”

Most travellers resist attempts by bus drivers to ply the road, Ogo said, adding that drivers, who eventually summon courage to take the route, would never stop along the road for people to patronize snack sellers and other roadside hawkers. Corroborating him, Suraji Adeogun, a commercial transporter, He recalled how the hoodlums killed drivers of popular transport companies such as ‘God is Good’ and ‘Agofure.’ After the bandits killed the drivers, he said, they kidnapped all the passengers in the buses and took them into the bush. “The road is so bad, starting from Elele to Emogha, Rumugi is very bad.

We heard, recently, that they caught some of them but we are begging the federal government to do more. Most of us don’t take that route. We take the airport road. If you want to pass that side you will be scared until you get to Choba. “If government want to do their work, they know what they are supposed to do. Those criminals can come out at any time. Sometimes, they operate twice a day.

It can be any period in a day. They don’t have specific time,” he said. Daniel Ozeke plies the road too. He said, though he had not encountered them, their activities have affected his business. “I have heard of such incidents. They have happened to our drivers and passengers. It was so terrible.

At a time, we were not having passengers again because any time from 2pm, from Okobe to Ahoada to Rumugi, especially ahoda and Rumugi, these are the most dangerous areas,” he said. A commuter, John Mariufe, also lamented that, “When you pass a police checkpoint, you will see five or six men in mufti and guns robbing and kidnapping people, once they hold you, they take you inside the bush and ask you to pay money. “If you don’t have the money, they will separate you from others.

While they set those who pay free, they will butcher those who don’t have money to pay. If the butchered person is a woman, they will collect her private parts and sell them to buyers. “I am suspecting, that, some of the policemen at the checkpoints inform them about an approaching vehicle and immediately you pass those policemen, the criminals will jump out of the bush and begin to shoot at you. It is terrible.

“We are calling on the government to come to our rescue. Once you pass Choba to Emogha, you will run into their den. That is where it is always happening. The police along that axis are not cut for their job,” said Mariufe. We’ve lost more than five drivers, says NUTRW chairman Speaking on the development, the Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NUTRW), Port Harcourt axis, Ekeki Park, Anyamalem Gift, said many drivers and their passengers have become victims of the bandits. He said: “We have lost over five drivers within one year. I am talking about our own drivers that use our parks and not drivers of other companies.

At this point, the government should do something that will help arrest the situation, they should not just treat it with lip service. “We are the victims all the time. They are kidnapping passengers.

The driver is their target. They will kill the driver and take the passengers, they don’t even have time, anytime they like, they will come out and do whatever they like, it is only by God’s favour that we ply that road.”

The development, stressed Gift, has affected their transport business, “Because initially, between 4am to 5am, people come out and embark on their journey, but this time around, even around 7am, you will not get passengers because of the happenings on the road.” He said: “The bandits come out even when you don’t expect them to be on the road. There was a time they came out at 1pm.

Sometimes, in a day, they would come out up to six times and nobody is doing anything about it. So, we don’t even make 30 per cent of what we were making before. “When you go to that road the surprising thing is that from pole to pole ,you will see checkpoints but when these boys come, the police will disappear. They will reappear when the bandits have finished their operation.

Even when the drivers call the police, you will not see them.” Soldiers to the rescue? There is no gainsaying drivers and commuters plying the road are angry at the police. Consequently, mmany have called on the Federal Government to deploy soldiers in the affected areas to guarantee the security of road users.

The only solution, stressed the drivers, is the deployment of soldiers or specially trained squads from the office of the Inspector-General of Police in the area even as they called for the immediate withdrawal of regular policemen from the road. Activists proffer solutions Alagoa Morris, the Bayelsa State Coordinator of the Environmental Rights Action (ERA), has called the attention of Rivers and Bayelsa states’ governors, Nyesom Wike and Seriake Dickson, to increasing attacks on passengers plying the road. Morris said abducted victims were being slaughtered and shot dead carelessly by rampaging gunmen operating at the Ahoada section of the East-West road between Elele and Emohua local government Headquarters of Rivers State.

Morris said, the situation has become so bad that passengers fret while passing through the road. He insisted that the governors and the Federal Government should develop special security interventions to stop the ongoing brazen criminality on the section of the road. He recalled that an elder statesman from Bayelsa, Francis Duokpola, who escaped being abducted by the bandits with his vehicle bullet-ridden, held a thanksgiving, recently, to appreciate God for protecting him.

He said: “So many persons have become victims of kidnapping along the section of the road. While it was gratifying to hear that some victims were rescued by the police, when an Agofure Bus was attacked not long ago; one would think the authorities have not done enough on the subject matter. This is so because the protection of lives and property remain front-line duties of any legitimate government; the world over.

“The harrowing accounts of the few who have survived being abducted by those engaged in the act, is hard to swallow. Anyone who listens to the experience of a victim and still sleeps well, eat well and feel unconcerned must have considered the country’s situation hopelessly irredeemable,” he said. “According to a survivor, even pastors who fall victim are killed carelessly.

For instance, it was told that when a group of victims were captured and were being marched from the East/West Road to the Shrine or camp in the bush, two men announced to their abductors that they were pastors. This irritated the kidnappers; causing them to be shot and killed immediately. “Even at the shrine or camp, where victims are held, they are killed at the slightest provocation. For instance, those without ATM or cash stand a very grave risk as they could be summarily executed.

Again, if they call the number given to them by any of the victims and the calls are not picked after two or three calls; the victim would face execution. “Sometimes victims are separated into those who have cash or ATM and those who don’t have. Those who have none are shot to death without delay. Besides, no food or water is provided for victims in captivity; an environment with several skulls.

“A survivor has thus advised that people should try and pick calls, whether from known or unknown numbers because, they might just be saving lives by picking the calls. Should our people now be denied travels because society is doing nothing to contain those engaged in this heinous crime? “Apart from the security votes available to the Rivers and Bayelsa State governments; why can’t these two state governments seek for effective collaboration with the Federal Government to tackle this monster before it takes a greater dimension? Community forests along the East/West Road should be combed by combine team of the military, police and Civil Defence.

This should be with the cooperation of local vigilante,” said Morris. Recently, aggrieved drivers and exmilitants barricaded a section of the East-West road to protest rising cases of killings, kidnapping, armed robberies and other criminal activities along the gateway road. Chanting songs in solidarity, the protesters insisted that the worsening insecurity along the Rivers State axis of the road was alarming and called for deployment of soldiers at strategic points on the highway.

Leader of the procession, Ebi John, said: “We are in pains. Every single day there are killings, kidnapping, arm robbery along the East-West Road and in the entire Niger Delta which we are not happy about. “We are appealing to the government to send soldiers to the troubled areas on the East-West road. We need the military troops because we are not safe anymore. Our wives are raped, our brothers and sisters are kidnapped and they cannot travel through the road free again. “We are urging the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Delta Safe (ODS) to deploy troops in the areas where the kidnapping is happening. We will continue to protest until this problem is over.”

  • Robbed with a whistle

Sir: I am still pained by the humiliation of our girls, Super Falcons, in France, on Monday night. They were determined to avoid defeat, but the referee, Melissa Paola Borjas Pastrana from Honduras apparently connived with the footballing authorities to humiliate our girls.

Our super excellent teenage goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnaodzie, wept inconsolably when the penalty kick was ordered to be retaken. She was still weeping when the penalty was retaken. Ngozi Ebere, our defensive rock, was stunned by the red card shown her. Her teammate Okobi grinned and gave her a comforting hug. Despair was boldly written on our girls’ faces.

It was 11 black girls versus the rest of the world. Leading sports analysts around the world concurred with this school of thought.

The game was heading for a 0-0 draw before the referee via Video Assistant Referee (VAR) awarded a penalty kick to the hosts after Ngozi Ebere was dubiously adjudged to have fouled France’s Viviane Asseyi in the penalty area. Ebere was red-carded.

The first kick was missed, but the referee ordered it to be retaken insisting that one of the goalkeeper’s legs must be on the goal line. Our young ‘keeper broke down in tears.

The second spot-kick was scored, but the goalkeeper’s leg was still off the line. But the referee okayed the goal.

Condemnations have trailed the match. Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) and the referee have come under intense criticisms.

Our wails will, however, not change anything. The history is there: France never liked Africa; forget the modern day pretence. France ran a very vicious slave trade in Africa. France later ran brutal regimes in many African nations during the colonial era.

Africa will continue being humiliated, except our leaders look inwards and unlock our greatness by harnessing the vast natural and human resources. African leaders must stop looting our commonwealth and stashing same in countries like France.

What good thing have our leaders done to uplift the continent?

    Our real enemies are ourselves!

Bravo, Super Falcons! You demonstrated Marcus Garvey’s postulation that “the black skin is not a badge of shame, but rather a glorious symbol of national greatness.”

  • Jigawa Imam killed, robbed of N400,000 – Police

Dutse- Suspected hoodlums yesterday killed the Chief Imam of Kwara Village, Kiyawa Local Government Area of Jigawa State. Spokesman for the state  police command, Abdu Jinjiri, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse, that the incident occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Jinjiri said the deceased cleric, Alsheik Idris Musa, 65, was attacked by hoodlums at his residence after he sold his farmland for N400, 000 to a construction company in the state.

He explained that the suspects allegedly hit the deceased several times with sticks, which led to his death. The spokesman added that the suspects allegedly took away the sum of N400, 000 belonging to the deceased. According to him, the suspects also beat up the wives and children of the deceased.

“It is suspected that the transaction took place in the presence of the suspected, but unidentified hoodlums who later trailed him to his residence. The village where the incident took place is a remote area. The distance to our station is two hours’ drive. “So the DPO in charge of the area got the information at about 1:30 a.m. and proceeded to the scene immediately, but he got there after 3 a.m. When he got there, the victim was already dead, but he was able to rescue the family members beaten by the hoodlums. They were taken to hospital for medical attention,” the spokesman said.

Jinjiri said remains of the deceased had been released to his family for burial. He added that the police had commenced investigations into the matter, and efforts were being intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects. Suspected motorcycle snatchers had also on Friday, in Dutse, allegedly killed a 33-year-old motorcyclist and made away with his motorcycle. Suspected armed robbers in the early hours of Thursday shot dead one person and injured several others in Garin Maidawa Village, Dutse Local Government Area of the state.

  • ‘How I was robbed, defiled by one-chance operators’

A 33-year-old woman, Bose (surname withheld), has cried out over the influx of one-chance operators in Ikorodu, a Lagos suburb.

Bose, who said she was robbed, defiled and assaulted by the bandits on December 21, told The Nation that the criminals operated with taxi between 4:30 am and 6 am.

She implored Police Commissioner Edgal Imohimi to instruct his men to contain the ugly trend, saying another young woman had fallen victim.

Bose told The Nation that she boarded a cab at CAC bus stop in Gberigbe, Ikorodu, around 4:30 am, which was the usual time she left home for work.

She said: “When I entered the car, I discovered it was tinted such that from inside you cannot see outside, but from outside you can see inside.

“There was someone by the driver who I thought was a passenger. What I just discovered was that I was the only person at the bus stop when they picked me. Immediately I entered, they locked the doors.

“I was trying to figure out why, but I thought it was because they’ve not got to where they would pick other passengers.

“To my amazement, I discovered that immediately we got to a junction on Igbopa road (the road that leads to Abule Eko Ijede), they turned and immediately the guy sitting with the driver just turned on the music and increased the volume.

“Out of annoyance, I tried to caution him that it was too early in the morning. The next thing he did was to slap and grab me by the collar. He started asking me questions and told me that they would deal with me. That how dare I challenge them? Did I think I was smart?

“I told them they could have anything they wanted but not hurt me. They asked how much I had in my account. They took my pin, my card and wallet and searched my bag.

“I had about N5,000 in my wallet, which were N200 mint notes. They took them, they took my phones, and the four ATM cards I had in my bag, including my mum’s. They beat me up.

“I had an opportunity to escape, I opened the door and tried to escape but they caught me. They told me to take off my clothes and I asked why?

“The guy beside the driver tore my clothes and said if I didn’t cooperate, they would kill me inside the bush. It was early in the morning and people were not passing.

“I begged them, but the guy gave me a blow on my face again and he defiled me despite my pleas.

“After everything they left me there stranded. No money, no phone, nothing. I was there pacing back and forth.”

Continuing, Bose said eventually she saw a path, followed it to a road where she saw a motorcyclist, who took her home.

Asked if the criminals withdrew money through her Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards since they coerced her into giving them the pins, she said she told her brother to call the banks to block the accounts when she got home.

“I was writhing in pains following the beating and sexual assault. Yes, I gave them the pins to the ATM cards. But when I got home and told my family what happened, my brother immediately called the banks and we requested that the cards be blocked because I was robbed.

“I was taken to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) where my brother worked. They took me to Mirabel Centre and administered drugs to me. The incident occurred on a Thursday and I went for treatment. On Saturday, I went to Area ‘N’ Police Station to report the incident and the first question they asked me was why I was just reporting the incident?

“I wondered what kind of question was that and told them I had to go and treat myself first because my health was most important. The scars were still visible, my face was swollen and they could see it.

“I made a statement and they promised to investigate the incident. I didn’t hear anything from the police again until last week when they called to tell me that another woman had fallen victim and had filed a complaint.

“They said I didn’t include the colour and registration number of the vehicle in my statement. Yes, I remember the colour. It was a silver Nissan car. But I could only visualise two digits in the registration number. I saw 11.

“Those guys really dealt with me. Even my waist was swollen. It was a terrible experience. I am speaking out because it is fast becoming a menace. There is need for the police to stop it before it is too late.

“That was how Badoo started and because it was not stopped in time, it became something else. Now that these criminals are hunting young, working class women at Gberigbe and are succeeding; they’ll soon move to other parts of Ikorodu, unless they are stopped.”

Command’s spokesman Chike Oti said the incident would be investigated.

  • Fresh anxiety on Kaduna-Abuja highway

    Fresh anxiety on Kaduna-Abuja highway

After police arrested 82 kidnap and robbery suspects, calming nerves in communities fringing the Kaduna-Abuja Road, residents say hoodlums are attacking and killing them for being informants. ABDULGAFAR ALABELEWE reports

Many came to grief on Kaduna-Abuja Expressway where they were robbed, killed or kidnapped. Then, a reinforced police team showed up, arresting no fewer than 82 suspects. That feat not only spread joy and relief in villages near the expressway but also among commuters on the road. Now there is a new wave of fear in those communities, where residents said crime is fighting back. They said criminals believed to be robbers and kidnappers have been hacking residents down, calling them police informants.

Kidnapping and robbery have since the suppression of Boko Haram insurgents been on the increase along Kaduna-Abuja highway. But the heavy presence of security agents on the road during the six weeks of diversion of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport activities to Kaduna International Airport kept them at bay. However, despite the retention of about 600 policemen on the highway after the airport’s relocation, the evil men returned to their old pastimes, even with more sophistication.

Failure of the 600 policemen to check the excesses of the criminals forced the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to engage the villagers along the highway. The villagers alleged that bad eggs in the police were sabotaging efforts to rid the highway of kidnappers.

The people of Rijana who played host to the IGP and then the Minister of Interior, Lt-Gen Abdulrahman Danbazzau told them that the kidnappers had killed 18 of their kinsmen who provided intelligence to the police.

Spokesman of the community Abdulsalam Abubakar told both IGP and the Minister during their visits, “Sincerely, we have started getting relief with the presence of security chiefs and top government officials like you who have come to show concern about what is happening in our domain. What is happening on this road is very disheartening and we members of the communities around are living in fear and anxiety, specifically we members of the Rijana community are very interested in supporting this operation with useful information but we are in serious trouble in this community.

“It’s not that we don’t have information to give but we are scared because we can’t see why 600 security personnel will be around here and they will not be able to enter the bush and flush out the criminals. Our youths are now spoilt. They have mixed with criminals and they have been corrupted by them.

“But our major problem is the fear of death. Our people are now scared to give information to the security. We have hitherto been giving information to the police but instead of seeing improvement and progress in the area of security, it is the other way round.

“Everybody knows in this community that in the process of giving out information to the security, we have lost 18 people. There was one of us who was seen as a very brave man. He gave a list of suspects to the security and he was macheted into pieces three days after in the presence of his wife. So also, there was a gentleman, Mallam Abdulrahman who also gave information to the security he was also macheted to death, same with Yakubu, Sani and Solomon, son of a village chief (Galadima). All died through information given to the security agents.

“I swear in the name of God, there are bad eggs among the security personnel especially the police. Our patriotic Inspector General of Police has done very well because we have observed that at every u-turn along this expressway, there is a police patrol van with a minimum of 10 personnel. But unfortunately, you will hear that in-between there are cases of armed robbery or kidnapping. And if you tell a policeman that robbery or kidnapping is ongoing somewhere close by, he will tell you pointblank that he will not go because he does not carry the weapon criminals carry.

“It is very disturbing that IGP has deployed 600 policemen to this area and not even a common chicken has been arrested. We believe that our police have requisite intelligence to tackle this problem,” he said

Apparently worried by the development, IGP on July 25 launched Operation Absolute Sanity with the mandate of rooting kidnappers out of the highway. A statement from Police spokesman CSP, Jimoh Moshood said the IGP deployed the operation, comprising of Special Police Force, Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Squad and Anti-Kidnapping Unit for the assignment.

Moshood explained that the IGP is concerned over the prevalence of cases of kidnapping on Abuja-Kaduna Highway.

He added that the deployed a Joint Police Team with Headquarters at Rijanah, Kaduna State are under specific and definite mandate to root out the kidnap for ransom gangs and armed robbery gangs that have being terrorizing the Abuja-Kaduna Highway.

However, barely five days after, 32 kidnappers bearing various kinds of guns and other dangerous weapons were nabbed around the highway. They were paraded on 31st July, 2017 by the force spokesman, CSP Jimoh Moshoodat Police Divisional Headquarters in Katari, Kaduna State.

Over ten serviceable AK47 riffles were recovered from the suspects who belong to four different kidnap gang. Moshood attributed the arrest of the suspects to the launch of ‘Operation Absolute Sanity’ by the Inspector General of Police

He said, “The IGP, concerned about  the issue of kidnapping along Abuja-Kaduna highway deployed a special team to root out kidnappers that have been  terrorizing the highway. “We have made significant progress in ensuring that Abuja-Kaduna highway is safe for passengers, travellers and other road users including communities that live along the highway because they are not spared too. Aside the kidnap of travellers, the kidnappers still go into villages to kidnap and terrorise community people.

He said, “32 of the suspects have been arrested by the team and we recovered several serviceable AK47 from them. It is the weapons that they use in terrorising and kidnapping people for ransom. The special teams deployed are to ensure the arrest of all kidnap elements from their hideout and make the highway safe again for all road users.

“We have not recorded a single case of kidnapping or armed robbery since the operation commenced and it is a pointer that the operation is working. The suspects have confessed to various roles they played and they belong to about four kidnapping gangs. Some are in charge of kidnapping while some others are responsible for negotiation and collection of ransom from families of the victims”, he said.

Two days after, another gang of dare devil armed robbers were nabbed by men of the Kaduna State Police Command after a serious gun battle. One of the robbers was gunned down, while four others were arrested.

Parading the suspects at the Police Command headquarters in Kaduna, alongside five suspected kidnappers arrested same day, and two suspected Indian hemp dealers, Kaduna State Police Commissioner, Mr. Agyole Abeh while said, the arrests were products of renewed commitment to keep the highway safe.

Abeh told newsmen that the police in Kaduna under his watch are committed to smoking out criminals.

The Commissioner explained that, the armed robbers were engaged in gun battle during a robbery operation along the highway, while one of them was fatally injured, four others were arrested.

He said the suspected Indian Hemp dealers were apprehended with a trailer load of Indian Hemp, adding that some of the suspects were at large.

24 after, the Kaduna Police Command’s exploit, the teams of Operation Absolute Sanity also announced arrest of another set of 40 suspected kidnappers along the Kaduna-Abuja highway. The police said the arrest came as the teams have located some kidnappers’ camps.

The Police spokesman, CSP Jimoh Moshood who paraded the second batch of the suspects at Rijana, Kaduna State The suspects were arrested at various villages along the highway, where they have their operational bases and camps.

He said, the Commander of Operation Sanity and his personnel have not rested on their oars, as they arrested 40 suspects in addition the 32 paraded on Monday 31st July, 2017.

CSP Jimoh disclosed that the police has been able to penetrate the kidnappers and locate their camps, even as he said some of their captives were rescued in the process, adding that, police operatives have taken over the bushes on the highway and confirmed that efforts have intensified to arrest the sponsors of the group who are at large.

According to him, “we have 40 suspects before us. These 40 suspects were arrested in the acts. They operate in different camps led by one, Ali Bello alias Tsonge. He is the Grand Commander of all the kidnappers you are seeing here. We also have Goma Shehu, alias Nama Gogo. Shehu is a notorious leader of kidnap for ransom gang that has been operating and terrorising passengers along Kaduna-Abuja highway way.

“We also have another gang leader by name, Mohammed Mujua. Others include Danladi Hassan, Mohammed Abubakar, Egwu Ogiri, and Emmanuel Awobi among others”, he said.

Items recovered from the suspects, include 3 double barrel guns, 2 single barrel guns, one assault rifle mounted with telescope, one locally made pistol revolver with 9.62 ammunition, pump action riffle, revolver, locally made 5MG, 30 live cartridges, assorted ammunitions, two magazines and assorted charms.

Other are five laptops, three IPads, several mobile telephone handsets, jewelries, wristwatches and others.

The force spokesman however assured those travelling on the highway of their safety and equally called on villagers and community leaders in crime prone areas to continue to collaborate with the police and other security agencies to rid criminals from their localities.

  • Trader robbed in Apapa

A woman was yesterday robbed of an undisclosed huge amount by two men in Apapa, Lagos.

The men abandoned their Toyota Camry car popularly known as Big for nothing and fled on a motorcycle to evade arrest.

The woman, a trader, was robbed at Annex Bus stop, Apapa, after she left the bank.

The robbers, who fled towards Kofo Abayomi, Apapa, abandoned their car and snatched a motorcycle when they run into traffic jam.

An eyewitness, Ifeanyi Ikechukwu, said: “The robbers drove a grey Toyota Camry car and robbed a woman selling snacks and recharge cards near Mobil filling station at Annex Bus stop. She was said to have gone to the bank to withdraw money for her business, especially recharge cards.

“The robbers drove through Kofo Abayomi and on meeting traffic, they used their vehicle to hit a commercial motorcycle. They immediately disembarked and snatched the bike from the owner and drove off on it. Although other commercial motorcyclists chased them, they were not able to catch up with them.”

Policemen from Apapa Division have since taken away the vehicle.

A source said police would investigate to ascertain the vehicle’s owner.

He said: “If the vehicle belongs to the robbers, the  particulars will make it easier for us to arrest them. But if it doesn’t, we will still go to the vehicle licensing organisation to get the details of the owner and ensure they are informed.”

Also yesterday, Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives foiled the theft of some cables in Ogudu.

It was gathered that the thieves jumped into the nearby bush on sighting the RRS patrol van.

The vandals were said to have drawn the concealed cables from the connecting point at the base of a lamp post before the operatives stumbled on them.

According to the police, the patrol team leader contacted Lagos State Electricity Board officials in charge of the area to take over before continuing with their routine patrol.

  • How gunmen robbed, raped us—Rivers corps members

It was a sorrowful nightfall for two members of the National Youth Service Corps last Wednesday in Asarama Community, Andoni Local Government Area, Rivers State, after they were robbed and raped by gunmen suspected militants.

The victims were said to be in bed at their unsecured lodge in an isolated part of the community when the gunmen broke into their rooms to rob and rape them.

The operation with started at midnight lasted for more than two hours, with two female corps members raped.

The militants carted away phones, food stuff, clothes, shoes, money among others.

One of the victims who didn’t want her name in print in a telephone conversation with The Nation explained that the gunmen numbering seven wore faze caps except the ring leader who was hooded.

She said the gunmen hinged their actions on the failure of the government to pay them their dues.

“The gunmen broke the door with their legs. No burglary proof or protector. We were about seven in the lodge. We had five serving corpers, one ex-corps member and one other person. They entered my room and I was told to knock on other rooms. They came here with guns and cutlasses. They were about seven in number. They asked all of us out of our rooms and they packed all of us in empty room. Then later they came to ask if we had any male corper because the lodge is like a wing. It was the first wing they robbed in the first hour of the operation. In that first wing, we had just one male corps member; so they took him to the other room and beat him with cutlass. They asked him to pull his trousers.

‘’We the girls were packed in an empty room and they told us to stand up one after the other and they led us to our rooms. Some phones were collected and luckily for some of us, our phones were not with us because we were charging it. I had my phone with  me but immediately they came, I hid my phone because they did not come with torch. It was our torch they were collecting. There has not been light in our lodge since we started serving. We have been using generator and we don’t put it on overnight. So there was no light and they didn’t come with any source of light. They asked me to put on my torchlight. They asked us how much we had as they led us to our rooms. As they were doing that, they were beating, slapping and hitting us. They searched the rooms and asked us to bring the money. So I think because I was fidgeting, I told them the amount I didn’t have. The one I had I gave them and they were asking for the remaining one. I was still checking when one of them came in to scatter all my stuff. And I was  trying to tell him that was just all I had. They asked me to kneel down and went into other people’s room to do the same thing.

‘’When he came back into my room, he locked the door and asked me to look for the money, else he would kill me. I told them that I didn’t have any money apart from the one I already gave them. Then he (gunmen) asked me to pull my dress, and I was actually raped that night. I struggled but he overpowered me. He was beating and slapping me. The marks are still on my body. He was the one who had the gun with him and he had already locked the door on us. One other female corper was raped in our room too.

After that, he told me to lie faced down on my bed, then also took some things from my room and left. He told me to lock the door when he left and warned that I shouldn’t open the door for any other person that when he wants to come, he would knock.

Then I was hearing footsteps; I think they were carrying the food stuff that they saw in other rooms. They went into the other wing where they met two men and a lady and  they collected their phones, foods stuff, clothes, shoes, and some plates too. All these lasted for more than two hours. They sounded local and they were saying “since the government did not pay us; no vex o. All these things, na hunger cause am. If government no pay us, then if we get gun, we go find our way.’’

Expatiating further, she said: ‘’There is no police station in that area. And our lodge is bushy, so even if we called for help, no one would have heard to rescue us. If you are coming into the community, our lodge is the first house. It was my pastor who took us to a hospital. I attend a parish of the Redeem Christian Church of God. The hospital is in another community entirely, there is no health facility where are quarters is located. The local inspector, local government chairman and some other people visited us in the hospital and took care of our hospital bill. We were adequately treated and given drugs to prevent pregnancy or infection. They told us to leave the place. So the place is under lock now. I feel very bad. It’s very heartbreaking and traumatizing but I know God has just been helping me. And with the people around me, I’ve been so encouraged. I know God knows about everything that happened and I know those that did it will not go unpunished.

She condemned the state of insecurity especially in hinterland communities like Asarama saying: “There was a time they raised an issue that everybody will be left in his or her own geopolitical zones, so even if they wouldn’t want to scrap it, we should be posted within our geopolitical zones. If I was in my own place, whatever they were saying, I could pick up some little things from it when they were speaking the language and that could even be used to trace them. But a in a place like that, by 5 or 6pm, you have to be in your own house and something happens, you don’t know how to communicate. Even if someone is talking about killing you, you cannot understand to save yourself. If it will not be scrapped, they should maintain us in our own geopolitical zones and they should ensure security measures because we did not say we wanted to serve. They made it compulsory for us, so once we have agreed that we want to serve our country, they should make sure security measures are high. There is no security where we are and I think that was what gave the gunmen confidence because they know there is nowhere we can run to for help.”

Meanwhile, other corps members have become apprehensive since the incident, especially the females.

According to one of the corps member serving in the same community, no measures have been instilled to forestall further attacks in the area. She said it took the intervention of the Zonal Inspector to approve their relocation to safer areas as the Local Inspector insisted they stay or face harsh consequences.

According to her: “The proximity of our lodge to the scene coupled with no guaranteed  security had set panic in us, we don’t know these guys  neither do we know what line of action they would take next, we just thought  it’s better to be proactive and not just take harmful risk. So, we all decided to vacate the lodge and not to return.’’

  • We’re robbed in Bauchi – Pillars

We’re robbed in Bauchi – Pillars

Kano Pillars have alleged they were robbed of victory at league leaders, Wikki Tourists after the referee “manufactured three red cards and a penalty” against them.

Wikki came from a goal down in the first half to beat Kano Pillars 3-1 at home yesterday to stay top of the Nigeria league table.

However, Pillars spokesman Idris Malikawa told AfricanFootball.com his team deserved to win this match but the referee from Niger State and his assistants combined to ensure they did not.

“They simply manufactured three red cards against us – to start with the foul that was penalised in the 48th minute was not committed by Jamiu Alimi, but Joel Djondang,” said Malikawa.

“Even the penalty against us for their second goal was not a penalty. The referee manufactured it.

“We deserved to win this game because up to the 77th minute, there was no pressure on us, we had full control of the game.

“But some other people simply said Wikki must win this game by any means possible.

“We are highly disappointed and demand the LMC investigate what happened in this match.”

  • How I was robbed in ‘one chance’ bus, by model

How I was robbed in ‘one chance’ bus, by model

For Busayomi Adeogun, last Tuesday is an unforgettable day. That day, she left her Fadeyi, Lagos home, beaming with smiles and confident of signing a modelling contract.

But when she boarded a bus at Fadeyi Bus Stop with eight ‘passengers’ on board, her smiles froze on her face.

Narrating her experience on Facebook, she said: “Immediately I entered the bus from Fadeyi going to Oshodi, the guy on my left side started complaining that the passsnger at the back was trying to pick his pocket. The next thing, he changed position and sat on my right side saying Onipanu owa o.

“Immediately, the one at the back hooked my neck and said ‘don’t shout’. The one beside the driver said ‘allow her to lie down on the floor’. They dragged me flat on the floor of the bus, collected my bag and started asking me questions.

“Where do you work? I said I am a student. Which school? What course? What level? My name and state? I kept answering the questions as he searched my bag and collected all the money inside.

“He collected my Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card and asked for my pin and I told him. He handed it to one of them and they dropped him. I was crying and begging them to not kill nor ‘use’ me. So many things were going through my mind.

“I remembered my mum and siblings as well as a story that happened 27 years ago that cannot be forgotten in my family. I kept begging them to spare me but the man in front said it depends on the amount of money they find in my account.

“He said if they find huge amount, they won’t hurt me but if I gave them a wrong pin or there’s no money in my account, they will contact my family or rape me till I breathe my last. They were eight men. I started praying silently and asking God for mercy. One was already touching my breast. Another hooked my neck down and a third person used his legs to pin mine.’’

Continuing, Adeogun said they put pepper in her eyes and tried to unzip her Jeans trousers.

According to her, the man who was dropped after he was given her ATM card called and the one who sat infront passed something to the ones behind and she was ordered to close her eyes.

“I didn’t close my eyes. I told myself that if I am going to die, let me die but I must see what they want to do. Next thing, he put pepper in my eyes, on my breast and was trying to unzip my trouser but couldn’t. I was screaming that I can’t see and was protecting my eyes from further pepper. I was also trying to hold my jeans so that they don’t pull it down to put pepper in my vagina or rape me, after all they have already collected and done.

“They collected my phones, power bank, my sister’s money in my bag and the change I had there. They packed everything and threw me off at Coker, towards Oshodi and left. I am still not myself till now.

“I have never been handled like that in my life. June 14, my terrible day. I just want to close my eyes and forget everything but I can’t. It keeps playing on my head and is hurting me more,” Adeogun said.

When contacted, the police command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP) said: ‘’No report was filed at the station in respect of the issue. It is a social media thing but we have been investigating to ascertain if anything like that happened. The lady should come forward so that she can assist us in our investigation.’’
