Scores dead as robbers raid banks in Ogun

Several persons were Thursday feared killed after daredevil armed robbers raided commercial banks in Agbara, Ogun State.

The robbers, who stormed the area at about 8am, were said to have announced their presence with sporadic gunshots.

It was learnt that the hoodlums’ attack, which disturbed the usually peaceful nature of the estate, left so many people in the pool of their blood.

While many were said to have bled to death as the attack lasted, The Nation gathered that employees of companies such as Nestlé Foods, Beta Glass, Reckitt Benckiser and Lotus Plastics scampered to safety.

It could not be immediately ascertained which banks were affected but The Nation gathered that First Bank, Zenith Bank, Guarantee Trust Bank, Union Bank, Eco Bank, Diamond Bank and First City Monument Banks, as well as United Bank of Africa (UBA) are located in the area.

A resident in the area who gave his name as Adewale said the robbers attacked all the banks and killed many people.

“They arrived the area at about 8:30am and started operating in some of the popular banks. They were seriously robbing and killing people. They were just shooting anyhow. So many people on the ground bleeding,” he said.

When contacted Ogun State Police Commissioner, Abdulmajid Ali declined comment on the issue.

He claimed that they were still on top of the situation directing the reporter to call the command’s spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi.

However, all calls made to Adejobi were not answered nor returned.

  • Five killed as robbers raid banks in Edo

Five killed as robbers raid banks in Edo

Five persons, including two policemen and a private security officer, were killed on Tuesday evening when robbers invaded Igarra, headquarters of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo state.

It was reminiscent of the 2013 robbery attack on Auchi, headquarters of Estako West Local Government Area, where two soldiers and several civilians were killed.

The Auchi robbery lasted over three hours.

The robbers, in Tuesday’s night operation, were said to have arrived the town in two Sienna buses at 6pm in a commando style.

They reportedly took over a police station, where they killed the two officers; other members of the gang simultaneously attacked two banks, where they reportedly blew the gates with explosives.

The hoodlums were said to have also killed two civilians during a shootout with the police and vigilantes.

Those injured in the attack were said to be receiving treatment at a hospital.

An eyewitness told our reporter on phone that the robbers killed a guard and shot at civilians after ransacking the banks and attacking policemen at the nearby police station.

Another witness said the robbers were heavily armed and engaged the police in a shootout.

It was learnt the policemen in the area fled into the bush when the hoodlums started shooting.

They were said to have returned when an armoured personnel carrier (APC) was brought to the scene.

Vigilantes were said to have joined in the shootout, reportedly blocking the entry points into and out of Igarra.

The robbers had to abandon their vehicles.

One of the robbers was said to have been arrested; another was shot dead.

Items recovered from the hoodlums included N4.4 million cash, 11 AK-47 rifles, 41 AK-47 magazines, three T06 rifles, two vehicles, 21 unexploded bombs, 46 T06 live ammunition, seven mobile phones and seven exploded cases of bombs.

Police Commissioner Chris Ezike, who visited the community yesterday, hailed his men for resisting the robbers.

Some policemen were still combing the bush yesterday for injured suspects, who might not have fled the community.

Ezike promised to address reporters today on the incident.

    Two Oshodi market ‘robbers’ nabbed

Two suspected robbers operating in Oshodi market have been arrested.

Joshua Akinsola, from Igoro town in Niger Republic and Saheed Olalekan Ogundipe, from Abeokuta, Ogun State, were arrested after stealing lace materials valued at N300,000 and N2,500,000 cash.

They were said to have used charms on two women shop attendants to perpetrate the act.

According to the police, one of the women fell for their charm and led the robbers to where the cash and expensive lace materials were packed. The other started shouting thief! thief!!, which attracted other traders who alerted the police.

Akinsola was arrested on the spot Ogundipe, who escaped, was later arrested by the police.

The police said the sum of N2 million was recovered from Akinsola.

Ogundipe, a danfo driver, confirmed robbing a shop containing expensive clothing materials and cash.

“I had my charm inside my mouth and anything I ask the victim to do, she will do it. She showed us where the expensive lace and cash were and we collected it. I escaped when police came; it was Akinsola that came with the police to arrest me where I was smoking Indian hemp.”

Akinsola, a bricklayer said: “We use charm to hypnotise the victims when we enter the shop, unfortunately, it did not affect one of them. I put my own charm in my mouth and when I said, where is the money, he shouted Ole Ole!. That was how the trouble started.

“It was a friend of the shop owner called Samuel that brought the job to us. He told us that the money was there. That fateful day he came and showed the shop to us and left.”

The Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni, said everything in place to ensure Lagosians enjoy crime-free ember months.

He added that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase has promised to station one helicopter in Lagos to assist in ensuring no robber escape when they strike.

  • Robbers raid Imo airport, cart away cash, valuables

Gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, Friday morning, raided a Micro Finance Bank located in the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, as well as the offices of Arik and Air Peace Airlines, carting undisclosed sum of money and other valuables.

According to an eye witness, the armed bandits, who came in two unmarked vehicles, overpowered the few security men attached to the bank.

The source said the loud noise from the breaking of doors and windows attracted some of the airport staff, who he said could not get close to the scene of the crime for fear of being shot.

A staff of Arik, who didn’t want to be named, said that all the offices were broken into, while both company and personal valuables were stolen.

“We are still in shock about how the robbers could have been able to operate freely without challenge with the number of security men at the airport. It calls for serious concern because if the airport cannot be safe, where else can be,” the staff said.

When contacted, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, who confirmed the incident, however said that it was a case of burglary.

According to him, “we got the report that some hoodlums broke into a Micro Finance Bank at the airport, but we did not get any report that they removed cash and no one was killed or wounded.

“Already investigation is ongoing and the two security men attached to the bank are currently being interrogated.”

  • At robbers’ mercy

    At robbers’ mercy

Calabar South is one  kilometre away from the University of Calabar (UNICAL). Its closeness to the school makes it a haven for students, who stay off-campus. But, the area is becoming unsafe for residents, because of hoodlums, who lurk in the dark to rob them. STANLEY UCHEGBU (Accounting) reports.

Given its proximity to the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Calabar South, a sprawling neighbourhood in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, is a home for students, who prefer off-campus hostels. The community has more students’ population than other areas close to the campus, such as Ettah Agbor, Marian, Satellite town and Atimbo, among others.

Given its population density, Calabar South is full of activities. But, some recent incidents have turned the neighbourhood into a crime den. Residents now live at the mercy of hoodlums and petty robbers, who lurk in the dark to dispossess them of their valuables.

Residents of Uwanse, Goldie Market and Mount Zion within the community cannot sleep soundly for fear of the hoodlums. Knowing the time to move is what the residents have had to learn. At dusk, sound of gunshots scares away people and within minutes, the place is deserted.

Sunday Ndifreke, a Medicine and Surgery student, who lives in the area, narrated his ordeal in the hands of petty robbers.

He said: “I was returning from school after night reading. I had my laptop with me, because all the materials I needed were saved on it. As I approached my hostel, three hoodlums appeared from nowhere and ordered me to stop. They overpowered me and took away my laptop. It was a terrible experience for me, because I had examination in the morning I was robbed. I could not write anything, because I was traumatised. My academics suffered, because I lost my books and laptop computer.”

Solomon Usang, who lives on Edibe Edibe Street, also shared his experience with CAMPUSLIFE. “It was hell,” says Solomon, a 300-Level Microbiology student.

He said: “One day, I was returning from an evening lecture. I was a few metres away from my hostel when two muscular guys stopped me, demanding to know what I had in my bag. I told them that it was my books and that I was coming back from school. They asked me to give them something. I told them that I didn’t have anything with me. They forcefully took my bag, which contained my Ipad and other valuables. When I raised the alarm, they disappeared into thin air.”

Earlier, Solomon said other hoodlums invaded his hostel, carting away students’ television sets, foodstuff, laptops, wrist watches, clothes and shoes. “We reported the incident at the Calabar South Police Station, but the suspects are yet to be arrested,” he added.

Other students also spoke, calling on the police to step up security surveillance in the area. CAMPUSLIFE gathered that a police patrol team used to move round some dark spots in the area. But, the police, it was learnt, only patrol areas with good roads.

A final year student of English and Literary Studies, Jerome Acho, said he was robbed in broad daylight on Mount Zion axis.

He said: “I was walking through Mount Zion axis by Orok Orok Lane when I saw two guys riding a motorcycle. They slowed down when they approached me and snatched my bag containig N10,000, ATM card and textbooks. I broke my door before I could gain access to my room, because my key was equally in the bag.”

Another student, Elvis Nwabuikwu, said he was returning from class when three men with a locally-made pistol ordered him to kneel down. “In full glare of people, I was robbed,” he said.

Some students blamed landlords  for not taking adequate measures to protect their tenants. They reasoned that the landlords, through their community association, could partner with the police to strengthen security.

A female student, who declined to give her name, said: “We are living in a community where one is not sure of his safety anymore. I don’t want to end up being a victim of rape and armed robbery. I am planning to relocate.”

Chinelo Nwaosisi, a 100-Level English Education student, escaped being raped by the hoodlums after she was robbed. She and Uchenna Ikeme, a final year Marketing student, were returning from Film House Cinemas at Marina Resort in Calabar, when they were robbed last Thursday with machetes.

Uchenna, who was injured by the hoodlums, said: “We were returning from work in the evening. When we got to Government Secondary School in Uwanse, two men came out of a dark corner and asked us to put down everything we had with us. They were armed with machetes. Initially, they wanted to attack Chinelo, who was walking ahead of me.

“When she saw the men, she ran back to me. They attacked both of us and took my laptop and mobile phone. When they wanted to rape Chinelo, I resisted the move but one of them hit me with a machete on my left hand. I sustained a deep cut. I screamed for help but nobody came to my rescue. The hoodlums thought that people would come out; they ran away.”

Uchenna said he saved Chinelo from the hoodlums. He urged the government to provide adequate security in the area.

Because of the incessant robbery,  traders and business owners close early. Those, who dare to stay beyond 8pm, expose themselves to attack.

A part-time student, Esther Okon, who operates a retail shop, said: “Hoodlums, who disguised as customers, came to my shop in the evening and robbed me. They asked me to surrender everything I had as they pointed a locally-made pistol and asked me not to say a word. They left with my money and generator.”

A trader, Etim Ekpenyong, gave tips on how the hoodlums operate. He said: “They usually walk in groups. They will ask their victims to find something for them. Refusal will make them to bring out guns to force their victims to comply.”

At Calabar South Police Station, an officer, who asked not to be named, said: “We receive several complaints from students daily on crimes, such as burglary, robbery and rape. We are trying our best to contain them.”

The police source said a new security outfit established by Governor Ben Ayade, codenamed Operation Skolombo, had started to patrol the area but residents said they were yet to sight the operatives at the spots where the hoodlums operate.

Students urged the government to check the hoodlums’ activities to ensure safety of life and property.

  • Udu… Where residents are at the mercy of rapists, robbers

On Thursday, September 10, Mrs Omamurhomum Ukana was returning from service at the St Paul Anglican Church, Ekete in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State. She was not carrying cash; the dutiful wife had a tin of palm oil, tangerine and items with which she planned to make supper for her beloved husband of 15 years and their two children.

    She never did.

•The late Mrs Ukana with her family shortly before her death
•The late Mrs Ukana with her family shortly before her death

Barely 100 meters to her home, the 43-year-old nurse was attacked by machete-wielding hoodlums and butchered to a painful death. Three days later when our reporter visited the murder scene, the bestial tale of her killing was aptly told by a congealed mass of her spilled blood.

“She was stabbed in the back, head and in her neck,” her husband, Stephen Ukana, told our reporter.

Mrs Ukana, popularly called Omas by friends, was not the first or 100th victim of a rampaging hoodlums, cultist and other criminals who have taken over Usiefrun, Orhumworun, Ovwian  and other parts of the local government council in recent times, but her death was the most gripping for the people of the horror-struck community and Christian community in the area.

Those who knew her (and they are many) described her as a soft, gentle woman who couldn’t hurt a fly.  She was a matron in health service of Warri South West LGA, where she was also the Focal Person in charge of nutritional heath.

A leader of the Anglican Church in the area told our reporter that she said the opening prayer for the evening church service on the day she was murdered.

So, why was she handed such a heartbreaking end? Trend of similar crimes in the area indicated that it is the modus operandi of hoodlums who have seized the area by the jugular.

•Blood-soaked Oyibo after his bloody encounter with the hoodlums

Mr Ogheneruona Oyibo, a reporter with the Delta State Broadcasting Service, one victim who lived to tell the tale of his encounter, said the criminals are usually young boys, some as young as 17 years or less and have no regard for the sanctity of life or human dignity.

“In my case, they broke a Coca-Cola bottle in my presence after taking my GSM phones, cash and other valuables. They used the bottle to stab me severally; on the head, back and arm before leaving me in the pool of my blood,” Mr Oyibo, told our reporter at the funeral of Mrs Ukana, on September 17.

But for quick intervention of good neighbours who rushed him to the hospital, Oyibo said he would he bled to death.

Our reporters visit to the area showed that the entire Usiefrun and other parts of that axis of the state are battling development challenges ranging from lack of motorable roads, power to all basic amenities. Apart from political appointees and few others, the people are mostly poor and without hope.

•Mr Ogheneruona Oyibo after his bloody encounter with the hoodlums
•Mr Ogheneruona Oyibo after his bloody encounter with the hoodlums

Investigation by our reporter revealed that the area has become a hotbed of violence and cult activities with school children, some as young as 12 years, deeply entrenched in cult activities.

The area, with a population of over 100,000, lacks government presence and basic amenities. The Delta Steel Town, the residential quarters of the Delta Steel Complex has deteriorated in the past decade, leading to the dearth of services that were provided by the company to its host.

“You can see the major roads into Orhumworun, Ekete, Aladja and other parts are deplorable. We do not have light or pipe-borne water supply. Parents are losing control over their children. The highest aspiration of some of the youths is to become thugs to politicians and go into politics,” a resident, who asked not to be named for obvious reason, told our reporter.

“Almost every child you find around here now belongs to one cult group or the other. They use their membership of the various cult groups to terrorise even members of their families and neighbours. Those who want to get protection join cults,” a civil servant in the area told our reporter on condition of anonymity.

It was gathered that the security situation in the area worsened further after the head of the Udu Central Vigilante Group, Honorable Prosper Erhinyojare, was gruesomely murdered. The local security chief was shot dead along with an associated at a beer parlour along the Udu Expressway about the 17th day of April, 2014.

It was gathered that the former Councilor’s murder sparked off unrestrained killings, maiming, robbery rape and other crimes in the area. The alleged arrest of his killers by the police has not halted the drift to anarchy.

“Since his death, cultism and criminal activities are on the increase as people are daily attacked. In the early hours of Monday, the corpse of a young m an suspected to be killed by cultists was on Sunday found at Ekete junction. The victim was simply identified as Junior. Also, at Owhase, a woman was killed after she had been robbed.”

Another source said, “Although the said Prosper was not himself free of terror, his presence, in the absence of government, brought law and order to some degree even though there were others under him who used his influence to victimize and carry out nefarious activities.”

It was gathered that members of the local vigilante group guarding the Usiefrun area have emerged as key suspects in the killing of Mrs Ukana. The vigilante gang, it was alleged, had earlier on the morning of September 10, warned of mayhem over the delay in the payment of their salaries.

“One of them particularly warned that when ‘bad things happen’ the people would know their importance and would be forced to pay up. It is instructive that on that same day they did not resume work as usual and the woman, who is the treasurer of the landlords’ union, was killed. So, it is a case of the witch flew over at night and the child died in the morning,” a source in the neighbourhood said.

Police Public Relations Officer, Delta Command, DSP Celestina Kalu, could not be reached for comment at the time of this report on Monday morning. But a source at the Owvian Police Station, who asked not to be named, said, “We are doing our best; it is a very difficult situation.”

The source, who revealed that some suspects had been arrested in connection with the killings, accused some prominent persons in the area of shielding culprits, adding, “When we called one of the suspects he boldly told us that he was at the home of a traditional leader. He said the traditional leader wanted to see us. Of course, we cannot tolerate that.”

  • Robbers kill policeman, LG official, driver in Rivers

A riot policeman on escort duty, Sergeant William Relomer, an official of Oyigbo Local Government Council of Rivers State; and a driver were on Tuesday afternoon gunned down by armed robbers in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
The bandits also escaped with a huge sum of money belonging to Oyigbo LG council, earlier withdrawn from a new generation bank , along ever-busy Olu-Obasanjo Road, Port Harcourt and the policeman’s rifle.
The robbery took place around 12 noon along the Olu-Obasanjo Road, which divides the highbrow new Government Reservation Area (GRA) and D-Line, with many commercial banks, corporate organisations, hotels and other business outfits.
Witnesses revealed that the four bandits trailed the three occupants of a Toyota Thundra car, after withdrawing the money from the new generation bank and they had not gone far, when the armed robbers opened fire, killing all of them on the spot.
It was also disclosed that the armed robbers drove in a Toyota Camry car, but in view of the heavy traffic on Olu Obasanjo Road, they parked close to the Rivers Transport Company (RTC) loading point near Waterlines Bus Stop, off Port Harcourt-Aba Expressway and trekked towards the victims’ car, not far from the bank, where the transaction took place.
It was learnt that the bandits targeted the fully-armed riot policeman, who they felt might want to repel the attack, but he was caught unawares, as bullets were first rained on him.
It was also gathered that with Olu Obasanjo Road adjoining roads and streets deserted, the armed robbers quickly escaped, while still shooting sporadically, since the spot is not far from the Olu Obasanjo Divisional Police Headquarters, along the same road, where the bandits operated unchallenged.
With the escape of the bandits, policemen later came and picked the three bodies.
It was learnt that the bodies of the policeman and the local government official were first moved away, while the security personnel later returned to the horrific scene and picked the body of the driver, that was fully soaked with blood.
Rivers police Spokesman, Muhammad Ahmad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), who confirmed the robbery, said: “I am aware of the incident, but only Sergeant William Relomer, who happened to be in an escort vehicle, lost his life.”

In the last four months, Rivers state had been under siege of armed robbers, kidnappers, cultists, sea pirates and pipeline vandals, but Governor Nyesom Wike kept assuring residents of the security of their lives and property.
