Barber bags 42 years for robbery

A Lagos High Court in Igbosere has sentenced an apprentice barber, Samuel Edet, to 42 years in prison for robbery.

Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya convicted Edet of robbing an aluminium technician Adewale Elelo of his Nissan Pathfinder on February 21, 2012.

She sentenced him to 21 years imprisonment for conspiracy to commit robbery and another 21 years for robbery.

The sentences, which were without an option of a fine, will run concurrently, meaning Edet will spend only 21 years in jail.

Edet, from Akwa Ibom State, was arraigned on April 27, 2015, on a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.

Prosecuting counsel Haroun Adebayo said the offences contravened sections 297 and 295(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    Edet pleaded not guilty.

During a nearly three-year trial, Elelo testified that the incident occurred on June 15, 2012 between 10 and 11pm.

Elelo said: “I was returning from a C & S Church after a revival when, at St. Paul Street, along Agbado Road, leaving Toyin Bus Stop, the second street by the left, I saw a black Jeep waiting ahead of me. I drove towards it slowly and the car flashed its full headlights at me. I became afraid.

“He (Edet) alighted from the Jeep and accosted me, asking me to alight and demanded for my key. He asked me to get into the boot of my vehicle, but I ran away and pressed the remote control of my vehicle that was in my pocket.

“I got to a police check point at Toyin Bus Stop and alerted the police that I had been robbed. The policemen and passers-by came to my rescue and found the defendant in the car because the remote control had made the car immovable.”

According to Elelo, Edet’s accomplices zoomed off as soon as the crowd arrived.

But Edet denied the allegations. He described himself as the victim of police illegal arrest.

Edet said: “I live at Ajegunle and work as an apprentice barber. I was on my way to look for a shop or work when at Ojuelegba Bus Stop I saw people running and shouting ‘Ole’ ‘Ole’ meaning thief, thief and I was arrested and taken to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), where the police wrote something on paper and asked me to sign.”

According to Edet, he was threatened that if he refused to sign he would be shot; hence, be signed.

But Justice Ogunsanya held that Elelo’s testimony, as well as that of the other eyewitnesses were credible.

She observed that there were several inconsistencies in Edet’s testimony, including his statement that he was looking for a shop or work at about 10:30pm on the night of the robbery.

The judge said: “The court believes the witnesses’ evidence that it is the defendant that stole the car. The victim positively identified the defendant as the person who robbed him.”

The court also noted that in Edet’s written statement to the police, he confessed to the crime, and that the confessional statement was not challenged by his counsel when it was tendered in court by the prosecution.

Justice Ogunsanya said: “The court is satisfied that the defendant is as guilty as charged.”

Patients, nurses flee hospital as police declare doctor wanted for alleged robbery

VITALCARE Hospital became a shadow of itself in three days. The health centre which was arguably one of the thriving private hospitals serving people in the suburbs of Abuja, became a ghost of its self soon after its founder and medical director, Dr. Ola Solomon Jimade, was declared wanted for alleged armed robbery.

On Tuesday, police declared Jimade, a medical doctor, wanted over alleged involvement in armed robbery.

According to the police, Dr. Jimade who hails from Ife-Olukotun in Kogi State, is the leader of a dangerous gang that has robbed numerous citizens and snatched vehicles at gunpoint in Abuja.

The police said four pistols with eight rounds of live ammunition and a face mask, which was carefully hidden in a bag in the office of the doctor were recovered during execution of a search warrant in the suspect’s hospital.

The Nation gathered that patients and workers had fled from the hospital even before stern-looking policemen arrived to seek information from residents of the Kubwa Phase 3 neighbourhood, where the hospital is located.

When The Nation visited the hospital around 10:30am on Friday, some of the residents wore a quizzical look that betrayed anxiety and suspicion over ongoing police investigations of the suspect’s activities.

The hospital’s white gate was left ajar, after the its staff reportedly took to their heels for fear of being implicated in their director’s scandal.

When our correspondent made her way into the reception building which also houses the observation room, laboratory and pharmacy, it looked like a place that had just been raided or deserted in a hurry. There was no activity there neither was there any member of staff in the once busy hospital that supposedly offered paediatric, trauma, gynecology, optical, dental and emergency medical services.

The hospital’s number, 08091280370, found to be registered in Dr. Ola Jimade’s name, remained switched off.

When The Nation contacted the President of the Nigerian Medical Association  (NMA), Dr. Mike Ogirima, for information about the suspect, he said: “We are still trying to confirm if he is one of us and when we do, we will take holistic measures. If he is found culpable, he would be rusticated from the association and that means that he won’t be able to practice again; if he is found wanting, he would be delisted.

“When we confirm that he is one of us, there is a tribunal: The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) which is the equivalent of a High Court. He would be tried by the Council and also tried in the other court which will make it a multiple trial.”

In an exclusive chat with the spokesman, FCT Police Command, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, he said: “We are still investigating the matter and we are reaching out to necessary authorities to help track him down.”

He also said some victims of the gang have been coming to the Command  to talk about their traumatic experiences.

Speaking with our correspondent, Ogunleye said: ”I am a native doctor, not a criminal doctor. I do incantation and I see vision for my clients who give me small money for my efforts. I have never been involved in armed robbery. I have no business with the stolen phone. I am not a member of any armed robbery gang. Riba claimed that the kidnappers give him returns after their operations.

Other suspects are  Saidu Ibrahim, Kabiru Abubakar, Sani Umar, Sani Nasiru, Ibrahim Sulaiman, Yahaya Abdullahi,    Bello Anji,  Ahmed Abubakar,  Adamu Lawan, Audu Lawan, Usman  Mohammed,  Ahmadu Abdullahi, Yahuza Yahuba, Abubakar Abba  and  Adamu Haruna.

Items recovered include  eight AK 47,  320 7.56mm AK 47 ammunition, 16 live cartridges,  1 GPMG ammunition with magazine,  two pairs of military uniforms, charms and  car breaking/unlocking tool.

Force Spokesman Jimoh Moshood, a chief superintendent (CSP) said: “They are a vicious gang, which obtains suspected fake military uniforms to perpetrate their activities.

“They come in the middle of the road, stop unsuspected commuters, rob them, kidnap them and sometimes rape them.

“He admitted to selling more than five AK 47 to  different kidnap gangs and most often, they come back to give him returns which is sometimes in millions of naira.”

The police decried increasing use of fake military uniforms to commit crimes.

Moshood said: “We have increasing use of suspected fake military uniforms by some of these kidnappers and robbers and we are investigating the source.

“We are working with relevant agencies to ensure that we get to the source and anybody arrested would be prosecuted.

“The Intelligence Response Tea, led by ACP Abba Kyari, has investigated further and we have arrested Jibril, who is responsible for supplying military uniforms to the kidnappers”.

On the high rate of illegal firearms, the spokesman said: “You must know that some of the suspects don’t buy these firearms, they make them too for several purposes.

“We are mopping up firearms from wrong hands and in the last two weeks, we have mopped up more than 100 illegal firearms from wrong hands and we would continue to do that to prevent the hoodlums from unleashing terror on Nigerians.

“The display of some of the locally-made guns goes to show that the criminals go beyond buying some of these weapons to making them.

“Our success is increasing and we believe that with funding, we would do more because we are above the criminals and the crimes”, Moshood added.
