Lewandowski  returns as Barca eye  title against  Espanyol

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski is set to return to action in today’s LaLiga clash at Espanyol, manager Hansi Flick said, as his side prepare to wrap up the title this week.

A victory in their city derby against Espanyol would clinch the championship for the Catalans.

The Polish striker missed Barca’s last three league games and was also absent from their 3-2 Copa del Rey final win over Real Madrid on April 27 due to a muscle injury.

The 36-year-old has scored 25 goals in 31 league games, two behind Kylian Mbappe in the LaLiga Golden Boot race, with both having played the same number of matches.

“Lewandowski is doing good and of course he is ready to play,” Flick told reporters.

Lewandowski featured for only 30 minutes in their Champions League semi-final second leg defeat by Inter Milan last week and missed their 4-3 home win against Real Madrid on Sunday.

After their last Clasico win, Barcelona have defeated Real in all four encounters this season across all competitions, and Flick hailed his team’s performance as a source of immense pride.

“We played 24 minutes with no contact from Real in our half, so it has something to do with the pressing, it has something to do with the right structure we had,” he said.

“How we started to press them when they had the ball was unbelievable. When I heard this stat I thought it’s really great… we can be very proud of that. I’m happy for the fans, for the club, because I know that’s very important for them.”

Asked about Real manager Carlo Ancelotti joining the Brazil national team at the end of the season, Flick, who coached Germany from 2021 to 2023, said: “I think he (Ancelotti) did a fantastic job in Madrid. He’s a gentleman and one of the best and most successful coaches in the world.

“I wish him all the best for his new job. I think he will find a great team there, and he can follow success there.”

Lewandowski joins exclusive 50-goal UCL club

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski etched his name in Champions League history on Tuesday night, becoming only the second player to score 50 or more goals in the competition after turning 30.

Lewandowski’s 50th goal in this exclusive club follows in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, who holds the record with 68 goals.

The Polish forward achieved the milestone during Barcelona’s commanding 5-0 victory over Swiss side Young Boys at the Camp Nou.

After a disappointing opening day defeat to AS Monaco, the Blaugrana were determined to secure their first Champions League win of the campaign, and they did so in style.

Lewandowski, with Raphinha and Iñigo Martínez, found the back of the net in a first-half blitz, putting Barcelona in firm control of the match.

Lewandowski’s goal not only contributed to his team’s victory but also solidified his place among the Champions League’s elite goal scorers.

With Barcelona eyeing a deep run in the tournament, Lewandowski’s continued brilliance will be key as the Catalan giants look to build momentum in their European campaign.

  • Lewandowski breaks Bundesliga record in Bayern win

Robert Lewandowski created history with his 105th Bundesliga goal for Bayern Munich on Saturday, the most by any non-German player for one club in the competition’s history.

The Poland international headed home Sebastian Rudy’s corner in the 73rd minute to score his side’s second in a routine 3-0 win away at Hannover.

Rudy added a late third for the league champions after Thomas Muller had broken the deadlock 12 minutes into the second half.

Lewandowski’s strike moves him out of a tie with former Bayern player Claudio Pizarro, the Peru forward having scored 104 over the course of three stints with Werder Bremen.

Lewandowski came off the bench to score his record breaking goal .

The champions left Joshua Kimmich, Mats Hummels, Franck Ribery, Javi Martinez, Thomas Muller and Lewandowski on the bench ahead of Wednesday’s visit of Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals.

And while Jupp Heynckes’ men took until the 57th minute to break the deadlock, goalkeepers Sven Ulreich and Philipp Tschauner excelling before the break, Bayern recorded their 11th consecutive league win in this fixture with a second-half burst.

Muller’s introduction as a half-time substitute proved a key moment in the game, his deflected left-foot volley from a Juan Bernat cross breaking Hannover’s resistance.

Lewandowski then headed in within five minutes of his own introduction to become the most prolific non-German for a single club in Bundesliga history with his 105th top-flight goal for Bayern.

Lewandowski form is not only a plus for Bayern Munich but also for Russia bound Poland who have been pitched against Chile, Lithuania and Senegal. As part of the shape up to the world cup Poland played a frindly match with Nigeria recently which ended by a lone goal in favour of Super Eagles.

  • Schalke delays Bayern Munich’s title party

Schalke’s win over Freiburg Saturday forced a shift in Bayern Munich’s title party despite Bayern’s 6-0 demolition of Borussia Dortmund.

Bayern Munich will have to wait to celebrate their sixth successive Bundesliga title triumph following Schalke’s 2-0 victory over 10-man Freiburg.

Jupp Heynckes’ side could have confirmed their crown with a win against rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, but only if second-placed Schalke dropped points in their earlier clash with Freiburg.

However, second-half goals from Daniel Caligiuri and Guido Burgstaller, which came either side of Nils Petersen’s red card, handed Domenico Tedesco’s side the points at VELTINS-Arena.

Schalke’s victory has ensured that Bayern’s wait will go on until at least next week, when they face Augsburg away, where a title-clinching performance would extend their 18-year wait to clinch the title in a home game.

Bayern were in a killer mood on Saturday making the tie against Dortmund look like a tea party.

Bayern Munich scored five first-half goals at the Allianz Arena.

Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring five minutes in and went on to score a hat-trick, while James Rodriguez, Thomas Muller and Franck Ribery also registered for a rampant Bayern.

Top scorer Lewandowski was played in on goal by Muller and made no mistake by smashing the ball past Roman Burki, who would pick the ball out of his net a further four times over the next 40 minutes.

Ribery had a goal ruled out by VAR moments later but it did not take long for a legitimate second to follow, as David Alaba and Rodriguez exchanged passes for the latter to slot past Burki.

Dortmund enjoyed a bright spell as they attempted to reduce the arrears, seeing Christian Pulisic come close when getting a shot on target for Sven Ulreich to keep out.

A third Bayern soon arrived; however, with Rodriguez chipping an inviting cross into the middle for Muller to volley home after Gonzalo Castro gave away possession in midfield.

A frustrating evening for Michy Batshuayi was summed up when a ball towards him in the middle was slightly overhit, and Bayern were not in a forgiving mood as they went on to bag a sixth.

Lewandowski was given the chance to complete his treble, this time making the most of the time and space afforded to him by tapping the ball over the line from a Joshua Kimmich cutback, putting Bayern on the brink of yet another title.

  • Football enthusiasts express confidence in Super Eagles ahead of World Cup draw

Football enthusiasts express confidence in Super Eagles ahead of World Cup draw

Some football enthusiasts, on Wednesday expressed confidence ahead of the World Cup draw, that the Super Eagles would be capable to face any team drawn with it in the same group on Friday.

The fans and pundits expressed optimism while speaking  in Abuja, that Nigeria would also get a favourable draw.

Tunde Popoola, the Secretary General of the Nigeria Olympic Committee ( NOC ),  said that the present crop of players in the Super Eagles were good enough to take on any team in the world.

“I’m not one to really think about trying to avoid teams. I believe if you want to win a big tournament such as the World Cup, you’re going to have to play the best teams sooner or later.

“Having said that, I am confident that the Super Eagles will be prepared to take on any country or group they are drawn into when the World Cup proper begins.

“I have no doubt in my mind in the ability of the crop of young talents we have in the squad right now to cause an upset and go ahead to shock the world in Russia,” he said.

Godwin Bamigboye, Chairman, Nigeria Football Coaches Association, FCT Chapter, advised the team to focus more on their abilities, rather than on the strength of the teams they would be drawn against.

“The draw is essential and a key moment for any country, the team and the coaching crew as it will lay out our path to the World Cup finals.

“It is one of those moments in which the whole world of football holds its breath.

“However, my advice to the team and the coaching crew is not to focus on the strength or weakness of their opponents but rather on their own strength and abilities.

“We can only hope for the best draw possible, but even if we are drawn against the ‘almighty Brazil’, so be it.

“The truth is, names don’t play football these days, but people do. It’s all about the team spirit and in a World Cup as little things can decide matches.

“What we need in a tournament such as this is to be mentally strong and physically robust.

“I believe we are more than capable to beat any team in the world with a very good preparation and hard work,” he said.

Jonathan Akpoborie, an ex-international said: “Let’s forget about the permutations. We’re positive, but we must also not get too ahead of ourselves.

“We know we’ve still got a lot of work to do and we’ve got to play more quality friendly games between now and the finals to fine tune the team.

“Having said that, it will be a great feeling to know who the Super Eagles will be facing at the group stage of the World Cup and I really can’t wait to know our opponents.

“For now, it’s just about focusing on the games ahead and looking forward to the finals,” he said.

Excitement will be high when coaches of the 32 qualified nations gather at the State Kremlin Palace in Russia for the Dec. 1 draw.

The gala event will be televised live around the world.

Teams have been seeded in four pots based on the October edition of the world rankings issued by ruling body FIFA.

Russia, being the tournament host, was exempted from the seeding, but was placed in pot 1 and atop group A.

No more than two European teams can be in one group, and teams from other regions cannot be pitted against sides from the same confederations.

The teams’ fates are now down to the luck or ill fortune of the draw, with the seeding throwing up some intriguing permutations.

World champions Germany will avoid South American giants Brazil and Argentina, and highly-fancied France.

Germany could come up against 2010 champions Spain (pot 2) or strong African and Asian teams such as Senegal (3) or South Korea (4) .

Another difficult constellation for Joachim Loew’s squad could be a South American opponent such as Uruguay or Colombia from pot 2, along with on-form neighbours Denmark (3) and much-improved African qualifiers Nigeria (4).

An easier draw on paper would be a group with Peru, Iran and Panama.

Russia will be hoping to avoid the fate of 2010 hosts South Africa, who failed to reach the knock-out stage, as they bank on home support to help them outperform their 65th ranking.

From the top pot, Poland may be the most favoured opponents for the lower-seeded sides despite a strong qualifying phase, with Bayern Munich striker, Robert Lewandowski, scoring 16 goals to lead the scoring charts.

Also, Germany bidding to become the first country to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1958 and 1962, will be a team most outside pot 1 will be looking to avoid.

Of some of the other big names, England, under Gareth Southgate, will be hoping to get out of the group stage, after exiting early in 2014.

Brazil will also be a team to avoid and so will third-seeded Iceland, who dumped the Three Lions out of Euro 2016.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to kick off on June 14 and lat till July 15

  • Here comes Robert ‘LewanBLONDski’

    Here comes Robert ‘LewanBLONDski’

Robert Lewandowski isn’t known for being flamboyant and changing up his appearance like other footballers.

On Tuesday however, the Poland and Bayern Munich striker decided to go for a change to his look as he dyed his hair, going for the light blonde look to head into the winter months.

The new cut has garnered the attention of social media and unfortunately for Robert, the attention of his team-mate Jerome Boateng who has jokingly accused the striker of copying him.

The German defender said on his Instagram story: ‘Why u all copy my style? Who’s next?’

The 29-year-old has even been compared on social media to former team-mate Marco Reus who does bare a striking resemblance to the German forward.

Even his employers have had their say on the trim as they tweeted: ‘Style-Level 100! #LewanBLONDski #MiaSanMia’

Lewandowski will get to show his new haircut off in front of the fans on Saturday as Bayern host Augsburg.

The Polish talisman is currently the Bundesliga’s top goalscorer with 11 goals from 11 games this season and will be looking to keep up his goal-a-game ratio at the weekend.

Lewandowski is taking Spanish lessons amid rumours that he is pushing for a move to Real Madrid next summer, according to reports.

That was followed by reports in Spain that Real had made Lewandowski their top target to solve their striker crisis, with the forward ‘obsessed’ by the prospect of moving to Madrid

And now Bild claim the striker has taken up Spanish lessons, adding further fuel to the speculation that he could agitate for a move to the Champions League holders in the coming months. The 29-year-old is desperate to claim European glory and is becoming increasingly concerned that his goal cannot be fulfilled at Bayern.

Lewandowski missed out on the Bundesliga Golden Boot last season and was reportedly unhappy that his Bayern teammates did not do more to ensure he beat Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Lewandowski already has six Premier League goals this season, in just five games

  • Lewandowski thriving on and off the pitch

Lewandowski thriving on and off the pitch

Bayern Munich and Poland striker Robert Lewandowski has obtained a college degree, one day after helping his side secure their first World Cup appearance since 2006.

The prolific forward faced a panel from the Academy of Sport Education in Warsaw and passed his exam for a bachelor’s degree.

Lewandowski’s thesis focused on coaching and management and described his own career, from playing football as a child to competing for titles in large stadiums.

It spoke of ambition and rivalry and of the support Lewandowski got from his parents and wife and the work is set to be published.

On Sunday, Lewandowski netted in Poland’s 4-2 win over Montenegro, his 16th goal of the qualifying campaign.

The prolific forward will hope he can carry his form on the international stage with him to the Bundesliga.

Bayern currently lie in second place in the Bundesliga having replaced Carlo Ancelotti with Jupp Heynckes.

Lewandowski will hope to impress his new boss and close the five-point gap to Borussia Dortmund when his side welcome Freiburg on Saturday.

Lewandowski scored a European qualifying record 16th goal as Poland defeated Montenegro 4-2 on Sunday to reach next year’s World Cup, but Scotland missed out on the play-offs after a 2-2 draw in Slovenia.

Krzysztof Maczynski and Kamil Grosicki struck early as Poland made a dream start, but Montenegro hit back through goals from Stefan Mugosa and Zarko Tomasevic to pull level with just seven minutes left.

Lewandowski restored Poland’s advantage on 85 minutes before a late own goal from Filip Stojkovic sealed victory, although Denmark’s 1-1 draw at home to Romania ultimately rendered the outcome irrelevant.

The Danes needed to win in Copenhagen while hoping that Montenegro could upset Poland to finish top of Group E, but Ciprian Deac’s late equaliser cancelled out a 60th-minute penalty from Christian Eriksen.

However, Denmark are at least assured of a place in next month’s play-offs as one of the eight best runners-up from the nine qualifying groups.

Slovakia face an anxious wait to discover whether they will advance to the two-legged play-offs after finishing second behind England in Group F following a comfortable 3-0 win over Malta.

  • Hat-tricks normal for Lewandowski – Ancelotti

Hat-tricks normal for Lewandowski – Ancelotti

Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti believes Robert Lewandowski has made phenomenal goal scoring feats the norm.

Lewandowksi fired a hat-trick as Bayern moved a step closer to their fifth consecutive Bundesliga title with a 6-0 demolition of Bavarian neighbours Augsburg at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.

The Poland international is now on to 24 for the season in the top flight and also chipped in with a pair of assists to draw praise from the experienced Italian coach.

“We had a really good game. Lewandowski did what he normally does,” Ancelotti told reporters.

“He has scored three goals and made two more, so what more can I saw about him.

“He is a striker who scores in more or less every game.”

Lewandowski and Thomas Muller had Bayern two goals to the good at the break, but Ancelotti sensed some nerves early in the second period before Thiago Alcantara and Muller weighed in alongside the man of the hour.

“We had some problems after the interval but the spirit and the quality of our game were good,” he added. “We made a very good game from start to finish.”

Bayern centre-back Jerome Boateng completed 90 minutes as he continued to build fitness on his return from chest and shoulder surgery.

“We played well,” said the Germany international. “We scored the goals quickly.

“In the second half we switched down a gear. I am glad that I could play 90 minutes and look forward to the coming weeks.

“The mood in the team is good, we are good and feel good. Everyone has to give full throttle.”

Bayern are 13 points ahead of closest challengers RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga table with eight matches remaining.

Lewandowski joins Bayern Munich’s 100 club

Robert Lewandowski netted a Bundesliga brace against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday to bring up a century of Bayern Munich goals.

Carlo Ancelotti’s league leaders survived some dicey moments early on in the contest before Lewandowski tapped home from

Thomas Muller’s low cross in the 38th minute.

Douglas Costa doubled the champions’ lead before the break and Lewandowski brought up his milestone with a clinical control and finish in the 55th minute when Arjen Robben picked him out from the right.

It was the 28-year-old’s 21st Bundesliga strike of the season and 33rd in all competitions

Lewandowski also reached three figures for Borussia Dortmund, scoring 103 in 187 games before joining Bayern in 2014.

He now has 100 in 137 outings for Bayern although he remains someway short of club icon Gerd Muller – the Bavarians’ all-time top scorer with an astonishing 525 across all competitions.
