Ekwueme a detribalized Nigerian – Okorocha

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has joined other eminent Nigerians and Igbo leaders to mourn the death  of former Vice President,  Dr. Alex Ekwueme who passed away in a London hospital.

The Imo governor described  the late elder statesmanas an epitome of a detribalized Nigerian.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor,   Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, in a statement said, “the Governor of Imo  State,  Owelle Rochas Okorocha has received the sad news of Dr. Alex Ekwueme, the former Vice President of Nigeria, with great shock, describing him as an epitome of detribalized  Nigerian, and therefore died as a statesman”.

The statement continued that, “nine years after the civil war, the rest of Nigerians re-enacted or reinforced their faith and belief in the Igbo as one of the major tripods of the nation through Dr. Alex Ekwueme who was elected the Vice President of the nation with Alhaji Shehu Usman Shagari as the President”.

The governor  also noted that “Dr. Ekwueme launched the Igbo into national politics since the second Republic and refused to be cajoled into playing tribal politics, and until his death, Dr. Ekwueme remained in the mainstream of Nigerian politics because of his firm believe in oneness of the nation”.

According to the governor, Dr. Ekwueme was a good example of the kind of politics the Igbo should be playing at any given time and has left behind a befitting legacy”.

He said Dr. Ekwueme’s peaceful and honest dispositions both in his politics, public and private lives are worthy of emulation, adding that, “the only regret about Dr. Ekwueme at the moment is that he has died at a time his wealth of experience and his wise advice would have been most needed and most useful to all Nigerians of goodwill.

The governor said “Nigerians and of course, Ndi-Igbo in particular would greatly miss Dr. Ekwueme and prays that the good LORD should grant his soul eternal rest”.

Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo State says he did not sack the Chairman of the state Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Samuel Ohiri as insinuated in the social media.

Some state tabloids and social media reported that Ohiri has been sacked by the governor over gross misconduct.

“How can I sack a top government official on the pages of newspapers?

“I have not sacked Eze Ohiri and now that it is clear to both rumour mongers and the general public, it is left for them to say their source of information,” he said.

  • Fela: ‘Statue without head an insult to the family’

Fela: ‘Statue without head an insult to the family’

    Follow @memorinken

Lagos state governor Akinwunmi Ambode  recently unveiled a statue in honour of Late Afrobeat musician, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

Professor TAIWO OGUNADE, in this interview with MOSES EMORINKEN, expressed his opinion concerning Fela’s statue and the representation (or misrepresentation) of the legend and what he stood for.

Do you think it was expedient to erect a statue in honour of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti?

Yes it is important but not to be represented as a blind man without a head.

I was a choreography teacher for Fela’s dancers when he resided at Agege Motor road.

If you go to any system of justice in Nigeria, you will see the statue of a lady holding the sword in one hand and a weighing scale on the other. This symbolises the justice system in Nigeria. On the flip side, we call Fela a liberation artist, yet he does even have a head or even a “clinched” fist.

His head is not in the statue; therefore, it could be anybody’s head. Majority of today’s generation do not even know Fela, not to talk of associating a face or head with him. Imagine a person born ten years ago or even those yet unborn. Will they be able to relate the statue to Fela? Definitely NOT! This is because of the headless feature of the statue.

Therefore, it is a waste of money and resources by Ambode and his advisers.

How can an artist erect a statue without head and call it Fela? That is an insult to his family.

We hear that his family members seem to be fine with the statue. What is your take on this?

Even if the family don’t complain about it, it was obvious that they were stunned at the sight. Everyone was wondering probably a head would descend from the sky.

Don’t you think the artist would have a valid explanation and philosophy behind the headless statue?

Well, I do not know. The governor said it is a liberation statue of Fela. However, a liberator will always have a clinched fist ready to fight. When he was alive, he always had what is called yabis time.

It was a time for him to talk about a lot of things, and get divergent replies. Can someone without a head “yabis” anybody? It is impossible! The signature of the yabis is missing in the statue due to its heedlessness.

It is obvious that the governor and his team were not well advised, or they do not know; I am sure the governor or his advisers never met Fela in their lifetime.

What do you think the governor and his team should do to remedy the anomaly?

First, the statue needs to be destroyed. It can’t be left as it is.

Also, Fela never wore clothes almost 19 hours a day. When you see him playing with his band, he does not wear clothes. Yes, he wears some fanciful dresses sometimes, but he hardly wears clothes. He normally would have only his pants on.

They therefore, must remedy these by putting a head, a clinched first and nakedness at some point. By nakedness, we know he doesn’t go to stage without his pant. They could use a trouser for him; the important thing is that his chest region is made bare.

What do you think about the statue of Obafemi Awolowo in Lagos?

That also is a waste of money. Awolowo was not as fat as the statue portrayed. Also, the statue had him with a running boot. Awo never wore a boot as far as I know.

I know him well enough because my primary school (Igbagbo Aladura School) in Ibadan was about 50 metres away from his house.

What is your take on the statue of Jacob Zuma erected by the Imo state governor?

I think Rochas Okorocha is misdirecting himself. People like Zuma should not be honoured.

You don’t honour Jagundas (thieves). He is facing corruption serious charges in his country…such a one should not be given a space in our land, not to talk of honouring him with a statue.

What would be your advice to young artists?

This is a country that has a healthy pool of the old and young. The old is called “old school” while the young “new school”; therefore, if you want to do anything that belongs to the old, it is important that you seek the advice of the “old school”.

Fela belonged to the old school, therefore, let the Ambode stop wasting state funds and seek the advice of people from the old school for projects that pertains to the old school. There are old artists who can guide the “new school” artist to do the old school things.

Work to resume on Owerri-Aba, Owerri-PH roads

…as Fashola orders contractors back to site

Respite is in sight for commuters that ply the Owerri/Aba and Owerri/Port Harcourt roads, both trunk A roads, as the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has directed the contractors handling the roads to return to site immediately.

This was disclosed to journalists by the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, after he hosted the Minister, Tuesday at the Government House.

The Governor hinted that the contractors have been given a marching order to ensure that the roads are completed without further delay.

According to the Imo Governor, “the Honourable Minister for Works, Housing & Power is in Imo State for a short meeting. I have made my concern known to him as regards the neglect in the State, especially with regard to the Aba-Owerri road and Port-Harcourt-Owerri road. And currently, it appears to me that the Minister has done a lot on his part to ensure the completion of those roads”.

He continued that, “the Minister has also informed me that he has called the contractors concerned to see me immediately with a view to completing the Aba – Owerri road project and Owerri – Port-Harcourt Road projects. We also talked about the issues of power in the State. He has indicated the interest of his Ministry to ensure a stable power supply. We have also discussed about the Federal Housing project which he promised that the issue of land will soon be resolved”.

The Minister, while briefing Journalists at the end of the meeting with the Governor, said “I have to commend the Governor Okorocha in his effort to lift the quality of life in Imo State and the lofty achievements and programmes he has embarked upon in his Rescue Mission government. We came in for our monthly Power meeting. Some of the issues we discussed were the expansion and distribution network of some of our communities like Nebo, New Heaven, Onitsha, Aba, among others on the power quality and service experience”.

The Minister remarked further that, “we have grown the generation capacity from 2,696 MW in 2015 to 7,000 MW in September this year. Transmission has also improved from 5,000 – 6,900. We now have a new problem and that is our production capacity has exceeded the distribution company’s wholesale power. So, power currently put on the grid is 4,600MW, Compare that with what we had 3years ago, we have essentially doubled it, but we can do more”.

According to him “These monthly meetings help us to do local diagnosis to what’s happening in this local Disco. To what is happening in this local communities. Some of these things I have spoken here, I have also addressed the community issues across the country, communities that host power stations without power. We are solving them one after the other”.

He also informed that, “the governor has also brought my attention to Egbema Power Plant and its challenges. We inform your Excellency that we make progress month by month. We expect that your power experience should be better and how to extend services to places like Nnewi, Ihiala and Okija which are parts of the Enugu distribution franchise. We can’t discuss power in these areas without the inter-state geo-metric power issue. And how to solve it”.

Buhari, Obasanjo, Akufo-Addo laud Okorocha’s education initiative

…says Africa needs education to bridge development gap

President Muhammadu Buhari, his Ghanaian counterpart, Nana Akufo-Addo and former President Olusegun Obasanjo Saturday commended the Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha for his free education programme for African children.

The Imo Governor under the Rochas Foundation College Africa awarded scholarship to five children each from fifty five African countries.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the College in Owerri, the Imo State capital,  the African leaders agreed that access to quality education is the fastest way to change the fortune of the African continent.

They urged African states to make education accessible to every African child “irrespective of their backgrounds”.

Buhari who was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema, said that African leaders are pushing for greater African integration, which he said the Imo governor has taken the lead “through his Rochas Foundation College which has given opportunity to quality and free education to children from across Africa”.

He noted that the greatest gift Governor Rochas Okorocha has given to humanity is the charity he has displayed through his Foundation and identifying with the less-privileged in Nigeria and Africa through education.

According to the President, “I salute your vision. What create the world of visionaries are people who are able to dream big and make a change. This is what we see in Governor Okorocha. Your free education across Africa will help to push for a greater African integration. So I expect the products of the Foundation to be agents of Unity and wealth Creation”.

Obasanjo on his part,   lauded governor Okorocha for his contributions to the development of education in Nigeria and the African continent.

He stressed further that the “the extent we take education is the extent we take development”.

The former President disclosed  that he is marveled by the Imo governor’s free education initiative which he said had offered opportunity to the under privileged and poor children to rise above poverty and relegation.

He maintained that “the beginning of development for any country is education”.

The former President, who is also the Chairman of the Board of the College, described Governor Okorocha as “the most resourceful and focused man of his generation”, who has continued to surprise him with his visions.

He charged the graduating students of the Foundation College to be “job creators and not job seekers”.

“I have come to share in the Rochas Okorocha vision on how to build African leaders of tomorrow so that they will grow up with African perspective, orientation and understanding, culture and integration because by the time we have Students in this School for five years, we will be having at least 25 Students from all African Countries. This will be the leaders of tomorrow, they will know themselves across Africa and when you talk about anything about Africa, they will understand and they will be the torch bearers and light of Africa”, he observed.

To the new students, he said “you are very lucky boys and girls. You have a wonderful opportunity here, opportunity of hope away from home, opportunity of mothers and fathers that you might have lost, opportunity of friends you might not have gotten and opportunity of greater future. My advice to you is to take advantage of every opportunity that this School will give you”.

He Continued “As the Chairman of the Board, I have agreed with Rochas that we will have five children from each African country every year and six from Nigeria, one from each of the Six geo-Political zones of Nigeria to balance the Political sensitivity of Nigeria”.

Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo, in his speech, stated that the access to quality education is the fastest way to change the fortune of the African continent.

He insisted that education is a right that every African child should exercise, adding that “education is the equalizer of opportunities”.

Akufo-Addo, noted that quality education can be made available “if we make the right decisions as African leaders”.

He disclosed that the reason for his close association with Rochas is because he shares in his passion for development through education and his drive for a common vision of making education accessible to every child irrespective of family or place, adding that “Rochas has fulfilled the Scripture as in Matthew 25:40″.

He explained that “education can change the fortunes of Africa. It is the equalizer of opportunities. We must all buy into the vision of a United Africa and the best way is through education”.

The Governor in his brief speech stressed that,   “my dream is to unite and empower Africa through education. The only language we understand in Africa is the language of poverty and this is what bond me and these Children. I strongly believe that out of these poverty situation in Africa, the great leaders of tomorrow will emerge. I just started what I do not know how to complete but God will Continue to direct me”.

To the graduands, he stated “I pray you keep the Candle on when am gone. I tasted poverty and had sworn to fight the scourge with resources available to him. We have taken five Children from each of the African Countries, who are mostly orphans or less-privileged in addition to the over fifteen thousand Children already in the Rochas Foundation Colleges across the nation”.

  • Feast, philanthropy at Okorocha’s birthday

Beyond the feast and eye-catching cakes, Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha’s 55th birthday anniversary was equally memorable for his philanthropy and vision, writes OKODILI NDIDI

With the huge crowd surging and humming, security agents and officials of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had no time to fall asleep at a corner. For two weeks, Imo State was agog, caught up in festivity. From the city centres to the village squares, celebration was in the air. While it lasted, people seemed to forget their differences, daily struggles and even secessionist tendencies elsewhere; all that mattered was the 55th birthday anniversary of their governor Rochas Okorocha.

Various enthusiastic groups competed to outdo each other to impress their gratitude and felicitation. They looked happy with their governor. Dancing groups and artistes were on hand to entertain at the carnival-like event, which some hoped would go on a little longer.

It was a harvest of tributes and praises as people from all tribes and tongues, and from all walks of life converged on Imo to celebrate the governor.

The event attracted a mammoth crowd from the first day, among whom were women and students especially beneficiaries of the state’s free education programme. Traders, civil servants and politicians held a colourful procession, adding to its grandeur.

Leaders from the 27 local government areas of the state, as well as various political camps and opinion groups took turns to felicitate with the governor, presenting him with gifts in addition to goodwill orations.

Most remarkable about the birthday anniversary was the magnanimity of the governor and founder of the Rochas Foundation College, which offers free tuition in its schools across the country.

During the birthday anniversary celebrations, Okorocha announced a scholarship award for no fewer than five children from each 55 African countries.

Codenamed 55. 5. 55, an acronym for fifty five years, scholarship for five children each from fifty five African countries, the birthday celebration afforded politicians, business associates, family, friends and the common people the opportunity to extol the virtues of  the governor.

Leading the flurry of activities was the solidarity rally by Imo women which grounded vehicular and human movement in Owerri, the state capital.

Thousands of colourfully adorned women from across the state took on a procession across major streets displaying placards with various inscriptions such as, ‘we thank God for the gift of Owelle’, ‘Owelle is a gift to humanity’, ‘Imo women celebrate the people’s Governor’, ‘Hurray our icon is 55’, ‘Imo women celebrate a selfless leader’ and ‘join us celebrate the architect of the new Imo’, among other beautiful appellations.

Most prominent among the different women groups that participated were the market women, beneficiaries of the state’s free education programme and female professionals from various disciplines who lauded the Imo governor for initiating projects and policies that have impacted positively on socio-economic status of women in the state.

Coordinator of the women and former Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Getrude Oduka said the women decided to celebrate the governor for running a gender-friendly administration that has improved the lot of women and children in the state.

According to her, the massive turnout of women for the procession was a confirmation that the women of the state are happy and grateful to the governor, adding that none of them were induced or coerced to attend.

She said, “We are here to celebrate a man that need to be celebrated, we are to celebrate an icon. For instance, he has given the entire children of Imo state an access to education, knowing full well that education is the key to life. To celebrate the architect of the new Imo, a man that has brought a lot of transformation to Imo State both in the areas of infrastructure and social development.

Speaking further, she said, “We are also celebrating a man that has the fear of God. So what Imo women are doing today is a triumphant entry into the birthday of the governor”.

Receiving the women at the Government House, wife of the governor, Nkechi Okorocha, commended the women for appreciating the governor’s efforts, adding that he has always prioritised issues that affect women and children.

She further thanked them for “being the pillar behind the success” of the Rescue Mission government and asked them to sustain it as the state “government will continue to better their lives and that of their children”.

She also thanked them for wishing her husband well as he celebrates his 55 birthday anniversary, adding that the huge show of goodwill and solidarity by Imo women will certainly spur the governor to do more in his service to not only the women of the state but to the entire humanity.

Governor Okorocha said he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love by the women of the state, pledging to continue strive to build a better society for the people of the state.

He said the occasion of his 55 birthday anniversary has given him the opportunity to reflect on God’s blessings, which he said propelled him to the height he has attained today.

He said, “I will continue with helping the less privileged, there is no slowing down. The free education programme of the Rochas Foundation has just been expanded to cover the whole Africa, where we are giving scholarship to five children each in fifty five African countries.

“In my 55 years on earth I have no regrets. I don’t regret any of my actions or decisions even though that people tend to misunderstand me sometimes. I am only grateful to God, there is nothing to regret in my 55 years on earth.

“I am so happy because the strength of this government lies on the massive support it enjoys from the women. That this government is been talked about positively in the world is because of women.

“One thing I tell anybody that cares to listen is that I am a special breed made by God for humility. I have never thought evil of anybody and so anybody that wants progress beyond limits must not think evil of me because I am specially made by God. People that love me, prosper beyond their expectations. This is the way God has made it to be”.

At the end, the women group made history by presenting the Governor with twenty seven birthday cakes representing the 27 council areas of the state, unarguably the highest to be received by a single individual in the state.

In one of such visits by stakeholders from Mbaitoli Council Area led by the state Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, the governor was lauded for given equal attention to all the zones in the state, irrespective of political interests and affiliations.

Madumere during the visit described Governor Okorocha as an “all-time giver who is ready to display generosity at all time when it bothers on human capital development”.

According to the Deputy Governor, the visit was to thank the governor for “the dividends of democracy on behalf the good people of Mbaitoli, Imo State at large and to celebrate with him as he turns 55”.

He said, “Your Excellency, I am here with my people to felicitate with you as you turn 55. You are like a spirit that possesses whosever that come across you because of what you are. Today, you have over thirteen thousand children. The one that is trending at the moment is the acronym 55-5-55. This time around, as you turn 55, you have raised your bar of philanthropy by adopting 5 children each from the 55 countries of Africa. This is another creation of Your Excellency in African leadership.”

Also speaking during the solidarity visit, the Chairman of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Samuel Ohiri showered encomiums on the governor for blazing the trail in providing basic amenities to every part of Imo State.

He said, “Owerri zone where Mbaitoli LGA is situated is the chief beneficiary of the governor’s astute leadership and uncommon magnanimity”.

Responding, Governor Okorocha thanked the people of Mbaitoli for their support and for coming en mass to celebrate with him.

Responding, Governor Okorocha said, “Madumere is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased. My relationship with my deputy, Prince Eze Madumere for over twenty years is like that of Christ and His disciples. I saw him in the United States of America fishing. I said to him, follow me and I will make you a fisher of men. Madumere followed without argument.  In our journey in politics, we kept failing even when I ran for president. In all these, Madumere has remained steadfast and calm.”

Mbaitoli women sang moving songs to celebrate the governor.

Also in another grand rally organized by the Rochas People’s Movement at the Heroes Square, mammoth crowd gathered to witness colourful display of culture, music and artistry.

Elder statesman and chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, described the governor as a good man and a visionary leader who has put the overall interest of the state above ephemeral gains.

He observed that the free education programme has distinguished Governor Okorocha from other people that had governed the state in the past.

Iwuanyanwu who spoke at one of the forum organized for the governor’s birthday at the Imo International Conference Centre (IICC), stated that the Imo governor had broken all records, adding that “anyone aspiring to govern the state must promise to sustain the free education programme”.

He added further that “the success of the free education programme had made it become a tradition to the extent that stopping it would mean dragging the state backwards. The governor had been on the right path even before he emerged winner of the 2011 governorship election in the state by helping others and investing in human beings”.

The PDP stalwart also stressed that “despite the governor’s humble background, he had shown by his style of leadership that people from poor homes can make good leaders.

That is why I see his free education as being more significant because it affects mainly the poor who ordinarily could have been out of school”.

Family members and other beneficiaries of the governor’s magnanimity also celebrated what they described as the governor’s uncommon style of leadership.

Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Acho Ihim, described the governor as a father who interested in the success of people working with him.

He said, “We have all learnt from his uncommon kindness and love for the ordinary people and this has changed the ways we think and relate with others, especially those who are not so privileged. He has also redefined politics and governance in the state and the results are there as testimony of his astute leadership”.

The Chief of State to the governor, Chief Uche Nwosu had this to say, “we all are grateful to this selfless icon for given us opportunity to rise to where we are today. So we have come to celebrate him as he turns 55 and to wish many more years of continued service to humanity.”

  • IPOB’s agitation a joke – Okorocha

    IPOB’s agitation a joke – Okorocha

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, on Thursday described the agitation by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for a sovereign republic in the South-East, as a child’s play.

Okorocha, who spoke after leading a delegation of the Progressives Governors’ Forum to visit the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and victims of the recent flood disaster in Benue State, said no reasonable Igbo man would support the agitation.

He said: “I have always said IPOB is an agitation group. But the captioning is bad when you talk of sovereignty within a sovereign nation and also talk of secession.

“Let me assure you that no Igbo person will support secession and people must see this as a childish act. We must stand up to address it before it becomes a national problem.

“As for us leaders in that area, it will be insane for anyone to think that the IPOB leader will ask us to follow him to seek secession.

“So Nigerians must learn to address it specifically. If you are addressing IPOB you should be specific and not to address it as an Igbo affair.”

My son is alive, strong, healthy – Okorocha

Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo says his first son, Mr Ahamefula Okorocha is alive, strong and healthy, contrary to social media reports on Sunday that he died in London.

The Social Media on Sunday went wild with reports that the governor’s son, Ahamefula Brendan Rocha, had died at The Royal London Hospital located at White chapel Road.

However, Okorocha’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo, has dispelled the claims, describing those behind the reports as agents of Satan.

Okorocha said: “The young engineer is doing very well in his profession.

“How could anybody ever wish his fellow human dead?

“This is strange and we all should discourage this kind of insinuation.’’

The governor recalled that he was recently reported to have died when he travelled overseas on a business trip shortly after he had announced plans to relocate the ancient Ekeukwu Owerri market, situated at the heart of the city.

Other markets marked for relocation are the popular Ama Hausa market, the yam traders and all traders along Douglas road in the capital city, Owerri.

The state government had directed traders in the markets to move out of the affected places to their new locations by Sept. 30, 2016.

The relocation issue had been enmeshed in protest by Owerri women and a court case between the Owerri Indigenes and the state government before the market was eventually relocated on Aug. 26, 2017.

According to Okorocha, the false report on the death of his son is coming only two weeks after the relocation of the market.

“God is the giver of life and nobody can determine how God does his things.

“The general public should disregard such report,” he said.
