Nigerians’ appetite for foreign goods cause of recession – Mohammed

He said the task of developing Nigeria’s economy was the responsibility of everyone, calling on Nigerians to be disciplined and patriotic.

The minister stressed the need for synergy among Federal, State and Local governments as well as private bodies to promote entrepreneurship in culture and tourism sector.

He also listed the importance of the sector to economic diversification, adding that government had launched “Change Begins with Me” campaign to foster national consciousness and appreciation for “Made in Nigeria” goods.

Mohammed said: “There is no gainsaying the fact that our appetite for foreign goods and services is a major factor in our economic meltdown.

“It is pertinent to state that the task of developing our economy is the responsibility of all Nigerians. The development will need through public-private -partnership (PPP) arrangement.

“I am fully convinced that if all hands are on deck and government gets the support of all stakeholders, the culture sector will be of strategic importance in the economic diversification agenda of our beloved country.”

  • Imo CJ calls for appointment of more judges

Imo Chief Judge, Justice Paschal Nnadi, has called for the appointment of more judges and magistrates into the state judiciary in order to lessen work load of judiciary officers.

Nnadi said that cases pending at the state high court were 36,159, as at Sept.30, 2016.

He spoke in Owerri at a special court assizes of the state judiciary, in commemoration of the 2016/2017 Legal Year.

Nnadi added that 23,192 cases were filed between Oct.1, 2015 and Sept. 30, 2016, while 853 cases were disposed of within the same period.

The chief judge urged legal practitioners to utilize the Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanism in the new Imo High Court Civil Procedure, for efficient and expeditious disposal of cases.

Nnadi urged the Legal Aid Council to take up cases of some inmates who had stayed for longer period in custody.

Imo Governor, Mr. Rochas Okorocha, who spoke, commended judges for the way they have carried out their duties and called for strict scrutiny of membership of the judiciary.

He urged the judiciary to complement the efforts of the executive to ensure good governance.

Okorocha debunked allegations of sack of 1,100 workers in the state civil service.

He however said that he would not spare any worker found wanting and called for discipline among workers.

Mr. Milletus Nlemedim, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who spoke, said more judicial workers would be appointed within the year in order to boost justice delivery.

He also said that the state government had set up a Law Revision Committee to review and update laws in conjunction with the House of Assembly.

Mr. Lawrence Nwakaeti, Imo Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association, who also spoke, condemned the interference of the executive arm of government in judicial processes.

He recalled the invasion of the homes of judicial officers by the Department of State Service in 2016, describing it as a sacrilege.

Nwakaeti advised the executive to leave the discipline of judges to the National Judicial Council.

He said the judiciary must stand up in defence of its independence and resist every action of the executive aimed at reducing its independence.

Nwakaeti also accused Imo Government of sacking over 1,100 employees of the local government councils.

The highpoint of the event was the unveiling of the new High Court Rules by Gov. Okorocha.

  • Igbos should forget presidency in 2019 – Okorocha

Igbos should forget presidency in 2019 – Okorocha

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, on Monday urged his people in the South East geopolitical zone to forget producing the next President of Nigeria in the year 2019.
He made the remark while speaking with State House correspondents after meeting Acting President Yemi Osinbajo along with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to him, all Nigerians should support President Muhammadu Buhari for four or eight years tenure in line with the zoning arrangement.
He said: “What I do know is that Ndiigbo should talk about the presidency after President Muhammadu Buhari. I think we should support this government. President Muhammadu Buhari has a tenure to work for, four years or eight years according to the zoning arrangement and everybody should follow the zoning although I am not an advocate of zoning.
He maintained that the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a party is strong in the South East.
He added: “We are trying to rebuild the party and redefine leadership so there will be no confusion. As to whether the APC in the South East is in disarray as the case has always been, we want to have a united party in the South East.
“We are hopeful from all discussions that about two governors will be joining us in the South East to strengthen the party. Right now, we have agreed that Senator Ken Nnamani should take a lead of the party in the South East to enable us have a common understanding along with other leaders like Chief Jim Nwobodo.”
On the denial that three governors in the South-East will join APC, he said: “I don’t think it is true, but if it is true it is probably because it is not time. It could be because I spoke when they were not yet ready.”
Also speaking on the insinuations that he (Rochas) is not worth to be the political leader that the South East should follow, he said: “Leadership is not in question, we have agreed that Ken Nnamdi should lead. So, it is not about Rochas Okorocha, I am a governor.”
  • Okorocha slams PDP over comments on Imo Airline

Okorocha slams PDP over comments on Imo Airline

Imo State Government on Friday slammed the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and an online news publishers, Sahara reporters for criticizing the newly commissioned State Airline, Imo Air.

The PDP has described the inauguration of the Airline as part of the State Governor’s 2019 Presidential ambition.

But the government in a statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary,  Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, dismissed the PDP as a “dead party.”

According to the statement, “we also take the floor to tell our audience that as we write, there is nothing like Imo PDP either in the eyes of the law or otherwise. So, any claim purportedly by Imo PDP is fraudulent and should be disregarded by men and women of goodwill”.

The statement continued that, “the attention of the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and indeed, the Rescue Mission Government in the State has been drawn to some negative claims in the media purportedly by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the State and the “Sahara Reporters” against the inauguration of Imo Air, which, its maiden flight was celebrated by Imo people at the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport on Tuesday, January 24, 2017.

“In the purported report, Imo PDP was quoted to have said through its Secretary, Nze Ray Emeana that the Governor acquired the aircraft for his 2019 Presidential election bid, and then queried the rationale behind the Imo Air Venture when pensioners and workers in the State were owed arrears of Salaries and Pensions.

“For the suspicious claims credited to “Sahara Reporters” with regard to Imo Air we do not also believe that such poorly scripted blackmail could come from an organisation like that. No reputable media outfit could come up with such Caption like “Read, Read and Read, Imo is a fraud” and without a byline. And they never quoted any verifiable source to back up their Claims. It was totally a frivolous story. They did the same thing in their unfortunate claim that the Governor had died following a slap by a female ghost few months ago. They also said the death claim was an outcome of the investigation by “Sahara Reporters.” So, the Management of Sahara Reporters should take steps to evade invasions by some spiritually weak folks whose stock in trade is blackmail.

“We also take the floor to tell our audience that as we write, there is nothing like Imo PDP either in the eyes of the law or otherwise. So, any Claim purportedly by Imo PDP is fraudulent and should be disregarded by men and women of goodwill.

“At the moment, there are five factions of the Party in the State with each one having full-blown State – Exco and apex leader and they have been in Court for the Court to decide which of the factions should rightly Claim to be Imo PDP and until the Court makes pronouncement on that, it becomes an absurdity for anybody to be making fictitious media Claims in the name of Imo PDP”.

It continued that, “And for the avoidance of doubt, one of the factions has Chief Nnamdi Anyaehie as Chairman and Chief Hope Uzodinma as what they normally call apex leader. Another faction has Barr. Charles Ezekwem as Chairman with Chief Emeka Ihedioha as the apex leader. The third faction has Chief Greg Owuamanam as Chairman with Dr. Alex Obi as apex leader. The fourth faction has Chief Chuks Ajaelu as Chairman, while the fifth faction has Chief Hillary Udumukwu as State Chairman and they have their respective offices.

“Hence, any Criticism against Governor Okorocha or his government in the name of Imo PDP should not be seen as coming from Imo PDP but from some selfish Politicians whose only interest is to govern the State even when they lack the capacity to do so.

“In his speech at the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport to inaugurate the Imo Air maiden flight, the Governor said that the State is not affected by the much-talked about recession in the Country and also made valid Claims that the State has cleared arrears of Pension upto December 2016 and has equally paid Salaries upto December 2016. And anybody genuinely keen in knowing the truth should have Challenged the governor to show proof of the Claims. That is the kind of Challenge we expect and not cock and bull stories.

“And we want to reiterate that the Rescue Mission Government in the State which Governor Okorocha superintends has cleared arrears of Pension upto December 2016 and paid Salaries upto December 2016. Let anybody in doubt openly Challenge us to show evidence. That is the way to go.

“Let us also state this, for the sake of emphasis. Those who want to be governor in the State do not see anything good in whatever Rochas Okorocha does in the State no matter how lofty such achievement could be. And the issue of Imo Air won’t be an exception. When we came up with free education they never believed in it. Today, the fruits of that programme have made them dumb. On the massive rural and urban roads Constructions, they said they were China roads, Imo people asked them why they could not even give them Gambian roads for the twelve years they held sway.

“On the urban renewal programme that has massively transformed Owerri, they said the governor was pulling down houses. We Challenged them to give the locations of the affected houses, they could not including the fence of Captain Iheanacho’s Compound. And during the last Christmas, Imo people especially those who came for the Christmas brought more than four hundred cows to thank the governor for his vision and passion for the State. And those opposed to the urban renewal can’t openly do so again in the State.

“We, therefore, Challenge those Claiming to be Imo PDP to publish the achievements of the Party for the 12 years it governed the State and let Governor Okorocha publish his achievements for the five years he has governed Imo for Nigerians to see. The truth is that the 12 years PDP governed the State could only be described as the years of the locusts or vampires. And they have no moral right to disturb someone who has shown leadership per excellence.

“On the Imo Air, we only expect lovers of good tidings to join Imo people in celebration and not enemies of progress.”

  • Political future of Igbos rest in APC – Okorocha

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has reiterated that the political future of the Igbo race can only be guaranteed in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)

Okorocha, the Chairman of APC Governors’ Forum, said the South-East could not afford to be in opposition party, and urged all Igbos living outside the zone to join the APC.

The governor in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, restated this in Owerri on Saturday.

“All indigenes of the South-East geopolitical zone should seize the opportunity offered to them by the ongoing registration of APC across the nation and register in the party,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the governor as saying in the statement.

He said the Igbos had no better option at the moment than to join the APC, adding that any form of opposition to the centre would result to a great political setback.

“APC is at the centre and in most states of the federation and what the south easterners should do is to wake up and identify with the government that has come to stay,” he said.

Okorocha, who solicited peaceful registration in the zone, warned party leaders to avoid rancour and utterances that could bring the party into disrepute.

“Very soon we will be confronted with Anambra governorship election and we must maintain the peace and unity this party has enjoyed since inception in other to make wave in the election,” the governor said.

He said this was not the time for leaders of the party to flex undue political muscles.

Earlier, Osagie said that the management team were on the tour of the South-East zone and expressed the company’s gratitude to Imo people for their patronage over the years.

“We are essentially here for two reasons; first to express our depth of gratitude for the support you have given to us for these years and as Oliver Twist to ask for the continued partnership with us,” he said.

He assured that the company would continue to support the state government’s quest to transform the state.

Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum and governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha has said that the victory of Mr Rotimi Akeredolu in the Ondo State governorship election has confirmed the popularity of APC in the South-West and the love of South-West people for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Governor Okorocha also said that the wide margin with which the APC candidate defeated the candidates of other political parties also showed that Nigerians understood the circumstances that gave rise to the current recession the nation is witnessing at the moment.
He said that those who had thought that the recession would affect the electoral fortunes of APC have now seen that they were wrong.

The Imo State Governor thanked the people of Ondo State for voting wisely and explained that the way they had voted only indicated how highly intelligent they are in interpreting political development and how richly they are endowed with wisdom.

“The people of Ondo State have spoken with their votes and they spoke well. Their decision to be part of the APC government at the centre is commendable. With their votes, they have passed vote of confidence on APC and President Mohammadu Buhari. They will never be disappointed in the APC government in the state”.

He congratulated the people of Ondo State for their patriotism and also congratulated, Chief Akeredolu on his resounding victory, and urged other candidates in the election to congratulate the winner without further delay.

  • Osinbajo, Saraki, governors meet in Aso Rock

Osinbajo, Saraki, governors meet in Aso Rock

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday met with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and some state governors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara was also part of the meeting.

The governors at the closed-door meeting included Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello and Adamawa State Governor, Jubrilla Bindow.

President Muhammadu Buhari left Abuja on Monday for Morocco to attend the 22nd Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), also known as COP-22, in Marrakech.

Before Buhari’s trip out of the country, Saraki had met with him three different times within one week over his request for approval to get $29.9 billion loan.

The Senate had recently rejected Buhari’s approval request for the loan.

It also described the 2017 to 2019 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) forwarded by President Buhari for approval as “empty.”

The MTEF is yet to be approved by the Senate.

At the end of the meeting with Osinbajo on Monday, Saraki simply told State House correspondents: “Am sure the VP will issue a statement. But nothing of great alarm. It’s all for good governance, inclusion and collaboration with all arms. The states are here, national assembly executives just came up with ideas on how to make things work even better, that’s all.”

No official statement on the meeting has been issued at the time of filing this report.

  • Selfish excitement for foreign trips by Nigerian Govs

Selfish excitement for foreign trips by Nigerian Govs

Those in search of irrational and disgraceful justification of misconduct from Nigeria’s public officials should turn to Ekiti state Governor, Ayodele  Fayose. His vocabulary is always drenched in classic idiocy and lunatic ecstasy in support of an unpopular cause.

Mid this year, Fayose would have wrestled to the ground President Muhammedu Buhari, had he sighted him physically for having the effrontery to place foreign travel restrictions on some Governors in Nigeria. They were required to clear with the Department of Department Security Service (DSS) before embarking on foreign trips.

The directive incensed Fayose who uttered all manner of horrendous condemnations of Buhari. He insisted by faulting such restrictions as gross violations of the freedom of movement of Nigerians as guaranteed in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria and referenced other laws Buhari has contravened with the “obnoxious” directive.  He dared the President to apply such travel restrictions on him, as states were not appendages of the Federal Government.

State Governors in Nigeria delight in global-trotting. Since 1999, the trend has been ridiculously etched in the psyche of state governors and their hordes of political appointees.

They feel incomplete without junketing to foreign lands as soon as they assume office. In the last political dispensation, some Governors, joined by a retinue of government appointees, acquire foreign exchange and travel out to import specie of swine (pigs) or some kind of grasses for animals in George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” (states).

That was when the economy was good and bubbling with free money from the mini-oil boom. So, such extravagance, though painful, but attracted less opposing noise. But Nigeria today is in dire economic crunch which is causing sleepless nights to President Buhari.

But some state governors, including those indebted to their workers over salary and furiously borrowing loans have refused to discard this damaging idea. It has kept gulping FOREX and draining the economy of their respective states.

The decent ones among them officially claim the foreign trips are meant to source for foreign investors in sectors like power energy, roads and water plants construction and acquire modern agricultural techniques and equipment. But the world is in an age of ICT, where business transactions involving billions of US Dollars can be sealed online within hours, at no noticeable cost.

But  also, some advance flimsy reasons for the trips such as medical tourism, sight-seeing of Western countries when on annual vacations; personal visits to family members  and friends or attending international conferences, but  on themes which have no bearing whatsoever on any development platform in their states.

It is this proclivity to baseless foreign trips that compelled Plateau state Governor Simon Lalong to mutate into a pastor to spend two-weeks  in Brazil  to pray for Nigeria.

Presently, at least 13 incumbent Governors in Nigeria have been identified as obsessed with global-trotting. And in some cases, the Governors themselves fail to do as much as feigning an official or unofficial reason for the foreign  trips, which are  hugely funded with tax payers money.

Governors Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state; the Owelle of Onitsha Rochas Okorocha of Imo state; the unassuming    Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara state; Ogun state’s Ibikunle Amosun; Benue’s Samuel Ortom; Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa state; Mallam  Nasiru el-Rufai  of Kaduna; Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara; Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina ; Solomon Lalong of Plateau; Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe; and  Nyesom Wike of Rivers have  leading  irresistible attraction to foreign trips.

Although they are chief executives of different states, the reasons often bandied to the public for such trips sometimes, rhyme suspiciously and rarely do the reasons differ.

Peculiarly, almost all the Governors claim the foreign trips are to woo or source for foreign investors. The unconvincing tales also laughably speak of direct foreign investments   in areas like Agro-business, automobiles, industrial partnership, irrigation technology and farm equipment.

These Nigerian State Governors have favourite destinations in Europe, Asia and African continents constantly on their menu of countries to visit. Uppermost is the United States, China, Australia, United Kingdom, South Africa, India, France, Israel, Canada, Lebanon,  Singapore, Malaysia,  Italy,  United Arab Emirate and  Saudi Arabia among others.

What is intriguing about the foreign trips is their failure in virtually all the states, the Governors have refused to let go their flair for global-trotting. Its nearly two years in the tenure of governors who came on board in 2015 and despite their multiple foreign trips, none can pinpoint to any foreign investor or any advantage the state has received from such trips, outside lining their pockets with estacode allowances, catching fun in foreign lands and shopping abroad.

When opponents in their states demand the dividends of such trips, they only reply with words like “expecting it soon” and the shamefaced ones simply prefer silence.

But these Governors cannot deceive Nigerians for long.  Anti-money laundering laws have made it extremely difficult to launder stolen wealth, especially with the agreements the Nigerian government has signed with foreign nations in the area of co-operation. These trips provide them with diplomatic cover to ferry sleaze money abroad, under the guise of sourcing for foreign investors and it is the sole reason no public benefits have been derived from the visits.

But the state governors should not forget that the spirit of their impoverished people, poorly developed states and rural communities, coupled with the undeserved penury imposed on them would continue to chokingly haunt them. Very many of the foreign expertise or technology they claim to seek outside the shores of Nigeria can be obtained locally. What irrigation scheme Governor Ibrahim Gaidam sought to create jobs for 40,000 youths that Agricultural Research Institutes in Nigeria cannot offer to him at a modest cost that he went to acquire in China?

Nigerians cannot be taken for granted for a long time and the level of consciousness of the people nowadays should induce caution in leaders, rather than such reckless indulgence into official profligacy. The time to have a re-think is now before they are crushed by the might of popular rejection by the masses.

  • Okorocha bemoans lack of unity among Igbo leaders

Okorocha bemoans lack of unity among Igbo leaders

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, yesterday regretted that Igbo leaders have allowed political and religious differences to undermine the unity and progress of Ndigbo.

The Imo Governor, noted that until Igbo leaders jettison their differences and unite as a people, they will continue to be marginalized in the scheme of things.

The Imo Governor who spoke at the funeral service of the former Secretary to the Imo State Government, (SSG) Nze Ignatius Umunna at Mgbidi in Oru Council Area of the state, attributed lack of unity among Igbo leaders to ignorance and selfishness.

According to him, “we must unite as a people.  And there is no better time for us as a people to unite than now because what has united us is far bigger than the political parties or religious inclinations that divide us.  We must all unite and sing a common song of unity.  It is important that we must all learn to unite.  I see it as ignorance at the highest level that we have allowed sectional differences to divide us and we have refused to come together as brothers.”

He described the late Nze Umunna as a worthy son of the state stressing that a vacuum has been created with the death of the former SSG, and prayed that his children could fill the vacuum.

He continued, “let us learn to appreciate people when they are alive and not when they are dead.  It is important that we must all learn to appreciate good people when they are still alive.  The children must step into their father’s shoes and must remain united to build on the legacies left behind by their father.”

In his speech, first son of the late former SSG, Mr. Kelechi Umunna described the father as a great manager of men and material and assured that they would build on the legacies left behind by their father.

Former Governor of the state, Chief Achike Udenwa under the later Umunna was SSG for seven years described the deceased as a transparent public servant whose wealth of experience helped him greatly when he held sway as governor regretting that he died when his experience was much needed both by the state and the nation at large.
