  • I’m for all APC candidates, says Buhari

    *Welcomes cross-party support

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that he is fully behind the party and its candidates in every state of the federation.

According to him, he is campaigning for them wherever he goes.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, also dismissed insinuations that President Buhari did not show full support for the APC while campaigning in Imo State on Tuesday, a state that has made headlines recently for the fractiousness within the ruling party, which has led to disagreements with the state governor, Rochas Okorocha.

“The massive crowd that gathered to welcome President Buhari in Imo State was made up of not only supporters of the APC in the state, but also supporters of other parties who are united by their love for the President and their desire to see him re-elected, despite the local candidates they support,” Shehu said.

He explained that President Buhari’s consciousness of the obviously-mixed crowd was the reason why he did not speak only about support for the APC during the campaign, but also encouraged the people to vote according to their consciences.

A statement by the Deputy Director of Information, State House, Attah Esa, quoted the presidential spokesman, saying “While President Buhari is fully behind APC, he welcomes endorsements from those who do not belong to the ruling party but is also sensitive to their support for non-APC candidates at the local level. It would have been insensitive of him to offend his non-APC supporters by ignoring their local affiliations.”

Shehu noted President Buhari’s open endorsement of Hope Uzodinma, the APC gubernatorial candidate in Imo State, whose hand the President raised high before the crowd at the campaign rally.

“President Buhari is for the APC in every state and there is no doubt about that, despite his immense cross-party support,” he said.

  • Ohaneze’s adoption of Atiku baseless – Okorocha

Imo State governor,  Rochas Okorocha has described the endorsement of the Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar by the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization,  Ohaneze Ndigbo as null and void and of no effect.

The Imo governor in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo,  insisted that “Ohaneze is a Socio-Cultural Organization and not a registered political party and there is no voting unit or polling booth called Ohaneze. So, its adoption of the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP should be seen as a folklore and should not give anybody concern”.

Okorocha also pointed out that the action of the Igbo group, has no electoral value, “the adoption is neither here nor there, since it has no electoral value. This is also not the first time Ohaneze has adopted a PDP Presidential Candidate. It did that in 2015, yet, PDP failed with its Presidential candidate, while APC won with its Presidential candidate.

“And one would have expected Ohaneze to exercise caution this time following what happened in 2015. Indeed, the Organization should have done things differently especially when it remembers that all Igbos whether in PDP, APC, APGA, ADC or SDP are presumed to be members of Ohaneze”.

He noted further that, “not minding the adoption, President Muhammadu Buhari will win in the South-East and the general election proper. So, Igbos in APC should remain focused and not to make the adoption an issue, when it is not an issue in all ramifications”.

It will be recalled that at the inception of the Free Education Programme in the state, the governor gave the students and pupils free sandals, desks, uniforms, bags and also employed over four thousand teachers.

According to the governor, “I have just come to dramatize our love for education. Education is our number one industry and the best gift you can give to a child is education. He added “But let me say to all of you that you may recall that seven years ago when I was elected your governor, my first pronouncement was that let education be free so that the children of the less privileged can go to school.  I started with that by giving free education, and also giving stipends, uniforms, sandals, desks, chairs etc.

“Today as I exit in a very short time as your governor I want to conclude with education. All those who have played a very vital role in keeping this light on, I salute you and I commend all of you. As I speak now, I want to announce to you that my parting gift to the people of Imo State in the Education Sector is the immediate release of N7.5billion for the renovation of all the secondary and primary schools in Imo State”.

The governor continued that, “in addition, I will release immediately the sum of N1million for the children in each of the primary and secondary schools in the State for their pocket money. Every child in Primary and Secondary Schools must also get the new bag already being distributed.

“For those of you who have done well in their schools, the best overall student in every School will have a letter from the governor plus N10,000. And the best in Primary School in all the Schools will also get the sum of N10,000. Your teachers who have been teaching you, making sacrifices and making sure you are educated, I hereby approve N10,000 for each of the teachers in both Secondary and Primary Schools of Imo State.

“For those students that have the power of communication and oratory, they will have automatic tickets to the United States of America on holidays. I do this in Rochas Foundation Colleges every year where the best students go to America for holidays. I want to introduce it to Imo State before I leave. So the first set of best students will have to travel before I leave office”.

  • Buhari, Tinubu, Oshiomhole to storm Abakaliki for campaign

President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) , Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as its National Chairman , Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, will on Wednesday, January 2019, lead other stalwarts to the flag-off of the party’s campaign in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State Capital.

The flag-off is scheduled to hold at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium Abakaliki.

The governorship candidate of the APC in Ebonyi State, Senator Sonni Ogbuoji, said the flag-off will be an opportunity for Ebonyi people to know his plans for the liberation of the state from the stranglehold of the purveyors of poverty and underdevelopment of the State.

“I am on a liberation mission in Ebonyi State. I have always believed that public officers should work to enthrone a government works with the people to enthrone a collective sense of common purpose and direction for the benefit of all stakeholders,” Ogbuoji said. “This belief has not changed; instead it has been strengthened over the years, necessitating my desire to serve the good people of Ebonyi State.”

Other bigwigs of the party who are expected to grace the occasion include Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, Governor Nassir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, Chief Ajomole, former Chairman of All Chairmen of APC, and the members of the National Working Committee of the APC.

“For these people to come to Ebonyi State to support our campaign despite their already tight schedules, shows how significant the event is for the party,” said Senator Ogbuoji in a telephone interview. “Ebonyi people should rest assured that the governance of prosperity and progress which APC is bringing to the state will reach everybody.

“We will ensure that our youths are sufficiently empowered and taken off the streets of Nigerian cities – the era of Ebonyi street hawkers will be a thing of the past when APC takes over government in Ebonyi State come May 2019,” Ogbuoji emphasised.

Analysts who are familiar with political events in the State said that the flag-off accentuate the popularity of the party in the State and lay to rest any semblance of doubt regarding the capacity of the party to garner landslide victory in the February and March elections in the state.

Speaking about the flag-off ceremony, Prince Nweze Onu, the APC Candidate for Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone, said that Ogbuoji has used his position as a senator to attract many projects to the people of the State.

“Senator Ogbuoji went beyond his primary constituency to impact the lives of people from other parts of the State,” Prince Onu told journalists in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State Capital on Thursday, January 24 2018. “His impacts have been felt in all aspects of life of Ebonyi people – from health infrastructure to education, electricity, portable water, good road networks and a myriad of empowerment projects.”

Onu said that Ogbuoji is a silent achiever who likes his works to speak for him, adding that the numerous projects of the incoming governor of Ebonyi State will be showcased to the people on the flag-off day as a peep into the good times that await Ebonyians when the people’s Senator assumes the political leadership of the State as the Governor.

Speaking about the event which he said will be the mother of all campaign flag-offs in Nigeria, Eze Nwachukwu Eze, the Ebonyi State Chairman of APC, said that the party has applied to the State Ministry of Youths and Sports for the release of the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, the arena that will host the event.

“We have duly written the Ministry of Sports to allow us the use of the Stadium to host our dear President Buhari and his teeming supporters,” Nwachukwu said. “We have made all arrangements to ensure that our people give Mr. President a heroic welcome.”

In a copy of the letter requesting for the use of the Stadium dated January 21, 2019 and made available to journalists, Nwachukwu said that the event will kick off by 8.00 am, and urged the Commissioner in charge of the Youths and Sports Ministry to grant quick access to the Stadium.

“Your quick response to enable us and the security agents to gain access to the Stadium from 28th – 30th January 2019, to make adequate preparations,” The Letter concluded.

  • APC: Okorocha dismisses expulsion rumour

Imo State Governor,  Rochas Okorocha,  on Saturday dismissed reports of his expulsion from the All Progressives Congress (APC) by the state chapter of the party.

The Imo noted those behind the rumoured expulsion were neither elected Executives of the party, nor appointed by the legitimate Exco.

He noted that there is no faction in the leadership of the party in the state.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor,  Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo,  in a statement made available to journalists,  stated that “contrary to what has been read in some sections of the media, the Imo State Chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC), never at any time suspended or expelled its leader, Governor Rochas Okorocha from the Party and has never contemplated doing that and won’t have any reason to think about that”.

The statement  continued that, “there is also no faction in Imo APC. There is only one APC in the State with Hon. Daniel Nwafor as the Chairman and Owelle Rochas Okorocha as the leader. Any other group claiming to be a faction of Imo APC must obviously be a gang of 419ers or league of fraudsters who are experts in issuance of dud cheques and collecting billions for jobs not done”.

According  to the Governor’s aide, “the the only contentious issue in Imo APC is that the National Chairman of the Party, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole imposed a known PDP member and a known character in the State on the party as its governorship candidate, and by so doing, pushing the party and its members to a very tight corner especially when it comes to the issue of marketing a Candidate.

“If Mr. Oshiomhole didn’t want the preferred candidate of members of the Party in the State, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, for any reason, and if he actually meant well for Imo APC, he would have taken one of the guber aspirants that formed the coalition who are known members of the party, and who is also from Owerri zone since that was the reason some of them in the Coalition claimed that made them to leave the government.

“But the APC National Chairman preferred a PDP man and also from Orlu zone. And he imposed the candidate on the party and at a time the man was facing charges on corruption. That is the problem with Imo APC and its guber Candidate”.

It also added that, “aside this problem, Oshiomhole also told his audience that he has dissolved the EXCOs of the Party from the State to the wards in total disregard of a ruling by Hon. Justice O.A. Musa of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory Bwari Abuja, delivered on August 14, 2018 in Suit No:FCT/HC/BW/CV/103/2018.

“In the ruling, Justice Musa stated; “An order of perpetual injunction is hereby made restraining the 1st and 2nd Defendants either by themselves, the National Working Committee, or National Executive Committee from either removing, substituting, replacing, suspending or interfering with the tenure of the 3rdDefendant/Claimant, his Executive and all elected officers of the 1st Defendant contained in exhibits A,B,C and D from their elected offices.

“And to the best of our knowledge, Justice Musa’s ruling has neither been appealed against nor quashed. In other words, Mr. Oshiomhole decided to urinate on the High Court ruling when he said he has dissolved the Daniel Nwafor EXCO and has set up the M.O. Nlemigbo Caretaker Committee. One therefore does not need to be a SAN to know that the National Chairman’s action was null, void and of no effect. It was effort in futility and that is why a contempt charge has been filed against him.

“We are worried that the elections are around the corner and some people who are expected to know better, are behaving as if they have nothing at stake. Governor Okorocha and APC members in the State will deliver President Muhammadu Buhari and other marketable Candidates of the Party. And the party in the State shall outlive these yahoo folks”.

  • 2019: Okorcha charges the Military on credible polls

Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha has urged the Military to ensure free and fair election during this year’s poll.

The Imo governor also called for severe punishment for politicians who clothe hoodlums with Army and Police uniforms during elections.

He stated that the political thugs who wear the unauthorized uniforms commit heinous crimes during the elections.

Okorocha gave the charge when the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) the 82 Division of the Nigeria Army, Enugu paid, Major General A. C. Maikobi, him courtesy call Thursday, at the Government House Owerri.

He noted that “this is the time all hands must be on deck and ensure that the nation’s democracy is saved”.

According to him, “You have been posted at a critical time in the period of electioneering. We request that the Military should do the needful to ensure free and fair election. I have no doubt that the Army will do the needful by ensuring free conduct of these elections.

“We are not unmindful of the fact that some unpopular and unpatriotic politicians sow Army, Police and Navy uniforms and give them to touts or hoodlums to use during elections. I urge the Army to start by fishing out these unpatriotic politicians and ensure that they get the kind of punishment they deserve, to help our democracy”.

He continued that, “One of the major problems we have as a nation is that people who are not chosen by the people are seen holding public offices because they won through backyard backyards. This is the major problem of our democracy. I urge you to correct this aspect of our democracy by ensuring free and fair Poll.

“In Imo State, going by public opinion the people already know who will be their governor, Senators, House of Representatives etc. They know all of them by the way they pronounce them and their actions but sometimes it comes to them as a rude shock when somebody they never expected, emerges and the person did so through manipulations. This is a time for all hands to be on deck and ensure that our democracy is saved”.

He also added that, “We have all agreed that democracy is the best way of government but in this present democracy comes a lot of problems. It brings hatred, gossips, bickering and all forms of evil activities. I want to urge all Nigerians to know that no matter what happens, we are members of this one family called Nigeria and we are duty bound to protect the integrity of Nigeria”.

In his speech earlier, Major General Maikobi said he had come with his team to inform the governor that he has taken over as the GOC of the 82 Division of the Nigeria Army Enugu and to also inform him that they have flagged off operation Egwueke 3 in the Southeast with their headquarters at Abakiliki, Ebonyi State.

He said, “For ease of command and administration we have divided the Command into sectors, one in Owerri. The exercise is not aimed at any person or group. Our purpose is to apply every effort within our capacity to checkmate criminals and criminality. We will work in accordance with the law and create an atmosphere of peace within our different localities.

“Our relationship with the people will be most cordial and the people have nothing to fear as our men have been warned to work according to laid down rules and principles”.

  • Christmas: Okorocha urges Christians to pray for 2019 elections

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has called on Christians to seize the opportunity of the Christmas celebration to pray for the success of the 2019 general elections.

The governor noted that Christians should be in the forefront of the campaign for peace and unity of the country “since Christ had also preached about peace and unity”.

He urged Christians to shun divisive tendencies.

According to him, “with the sincere prayers of Christians in the country, the nation could move faster on the fast lanes of progress and development.

He called for prayers for leaders at all levels especially for President Muhammadu Buhari, the governors, Local Government Chairmen, Security agencies, the Priests and Imams so that they could have God-given wisdom and knowledge to lead.

The governor urged Christians in the State, in particular, to “love all not minding which religion one practices and do away with hatred and malice”.

  • 2019: It will take God to market APC guber candidate, says Okorocha

Imo State governor,  Rochas Okorocha, Wednesday night, said it will take God to market the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Hope Uzodinma to win the 2019 election.

The Imo governor said that while it will be easy to deliver President Muhammadu Buhari, it will be impossible to convince any person to vote for the APC candidate,  Uzodinma.

Okorocha also stated that he is not the problem of the embattled APC governorship candidate.

A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo,  said, “it would require God talking from heaven and telling Imo people, “Chief Hope Uzodinma is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased” before Imo people could consider changing their minds. If not, Imo people know those who cannot be their governor. Chief Uzodinma knows this fact and he should stop using the governor to deceive his sponsors”.

The statement continued that, “Adams Oshiomhole’s preferred governorship Candidate for All Progressives Congress, APC, Imo State, Chief Hope Uzodinma, has launched repeated media campaign of calumny against Governor Rochas Okorocha and giving the impression that his problem as the gubernatorial Candidate of Imo APC is the governor”.

“And we wish to quickly crave the indulgence of all men and women of truth to State as follows; Governor Rochas Okorocha is not the problem of Chief Hope Uzodinma as the APC governorship candidate in the State”.

“Chief Uzodinma problem is self-inflicted. Imo people who are going to vote on Election Day know him and he has the choking problem of how to convince them to vote for him to become their governor. The latest story on the APC candidate is that he has been banned from travelling out over allegation of treasury looting. It was not Okorocha who slammed the travel ban on him”.

He added that “he is in Court over 12.5million dollars Contract. That does not concern Rochas.   He is in Court for asset declaration issue. That has also nothing to do with Rochas.

“Chief Uzodinma is also in court over issuance of Dud Cheque. This matter also has nothing to do with Rochas Okorocha, among other similar cases. It is also not an oversight that the APC candidate has not made his profile available for people to see.

“Before now, Chief Uzodinma never attended any APC meeting in the State. He has never visited the governor either before or after he was handed over the ticket of the Party.

“Chief Uzodinma went to the Senate in 2011 through the Court. In 2015, he knew how his victory also came. But this time, it is going to be a different ball game with strong governorship Candidates in AA, APGA, PDP, AP, LP, SDP, etc. Ahmed Gulak style or the 2015 stampede won’t be the case in 2019”.

According to the statement, “Imo people knew why they settled for Sam Mbakwe in 1979. And Evan Enwerem in 1991, Achike Udenwa in 1999, Ikedi Ohakim in 2007 and Rochas Okorocha in 2011. There are certain ugly stories they do not like to hear about anybody aspiring to govern them.

“Chief Uzodinma should be courageous enough to tell those sponsoring him where the problem lies. It is not Rochas. It is going to be easy to market Muhammadu Buhari and some other Candidates of the party”.

  • Ohaneze, Afenifere leaders parley in Owerri

Leaders of apex Igbo and Yoruba socio-cultural organisations, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Afenifere on Monday night met in Owerri, the Imo State capital to forge national unity and peaceful coexistence.

The groups were led by the respective National Presidents, Chiefs Nnia Nwodo and Ayo Adebanjo.

Other prominent Igbo sons and daughters were also in attendance.

Receiving the entourage at the Government House, Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha charged the Ohaneze leaders to “take the needed steps to ensure that the rest of Nigerians see Ndigbo as part and parcel of them”.

He added that “until other Nigerians begin to come to Igboland to invest like the Igbo do in other parts of Nigeria, the gap will continue to exist”.

According to him, “Ohanaeze is a socio-cultural organisation like Afenifere and Arewa. Ohanaeze could relate and marry these organisations and use them to launch the campaign that would truly make other parts of Nigeria to see Igbos as fellow Nigerians in whom they should be well pleased.

“We are highly misunderstood and until you come to an Igboman’s house you will not know how hospitable he is.”

Nwodo said: “Ohanaeze is interested in seeing how our people who are in government have fared. We owe it to our people to tell them who has done well and who has not.

“We can rightfully say that Owelle Rochas Okorocha has done very well in the area of infrastructural transformation of Imo State as Imo has changed greatly and is now appealing to foreign investors.

“Rochas Foundation during the government of Chief Igariwe promised to build headquarters for Ohanaeze.

“One would have thought it was a political statement, and sometimes such promises are not fulfilled but not for a man like Governor Okorocha.

“As I speak to you now, that headquarters is already roofed, tiles have been erected, doors are been fitted.

“Only three weeks, he removed the roofs of our hall and redesigned the hall. Right now he is giving us a fence better than that of Government House of Imo.

“Governor Rochas has a very large heart. It will go on record that no Igbo leader has been as generous to Ohanaeze as Rochas Okorocha. I seize this moment to thank him.”

  • 19 freed as Imo decongests prisons

As overcrowded prison cells are decongested in Imo State, 19 inmates are the first beneficiaries, reports OKODILI NDIDI

After years of complaints, the congestion of Owerri Prisons, with its attendant health and security challenges, has finally got the attention of the state government.

Even though the state governor, Rochas Okorocha had on different occasions raised the alarm over the poor state of the Owerri Prisons, especially the worrying issue of congestion, no practical step was taken to address the problem until now.

Penultimate Tuesday, the state chief judge, Hon Justice Paschal Obinna Nnadi released 24 Prison inmates in a major decongestion exercise. Twelve other Awaiting Trial Men were referred to various high courts handling their cases.

The exercise was to commemorate the 2018 Jail Delivery Day.

One of the lucky inmates, Ifeanyi Atumonyegwu had been remanded in prison custody since 2015 for a minor offence and had overstayed his detention period of two years, according to the Chief Judge’s ruling.

Another freed inmate, Eric Iwu, was arraigned in 2014, while Nzeribe Nwankwo, another inmate had been in prison custody since 2010.

That was the pathetic state of the inmates who were dumped in prison over minor offences and were forgotten to rot away.

Twelve others were not so lucky, and were instead referred to respective courts where their suits were instituted, in accordance to the non prosequi signed by the Attorney General of the State, declining further prosecution of the cases.

Those referred to the Courts were Sylvanus Okeke, Okechukwu Odigbo, Stanley Amaefule, Denis Nwauwa and a traditional ruler, Boniface Ihueze.

Others were Lucas Joseph, Linus Nlemedim, Emmanuel Onyewuchi, Paul Kio, Emmanuel Nwaokorie, Chukwuebuka Nkemjika and Chinweikpe Uwenwa.

Unfortunately, two of the inmates that were listed to benefit from the the Jail Delivery, Onyebuchi Ejimkonye and Joseph Onyebuchi were said to have died two weeks before the CJ’s visit.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Judge said that the Prison visit was in line with the Jail delivery session.

He noted that in accordance to the Nigerian constitution, the CJ has the legal rights to visit and free prison inmates, especially those awaiting trials or have served for a long period of years without trails.

Justice Nnadi explained further that the exercise was also necessitated by the increasing level of congestion of the Owerri prison.

He said that the visit will help to decongest the prison for “the healthy living of the inmates, officials and the residents”.

The CJ reiterated the readiness of the Imo Judiciary in ensuring speedy fair hearing, equity and justice to those seeking justice and redress in the law Court.

He admonished the inmates not to be deterred by the environment they found themselves, but to always approach the Court if they have stayed beyond five years without trial, adding that such step could help speed up their freedom.

According to him, the clerk has been mandated to issue production warrants immediately to High Courts for a speedy hearing and ruling on pending cases.

“All pending cases in the High Courts across the state should be looked into without further delay.  Once there is a nolle having a pending case in the High Court, the CJ has no legal right to release or interfere, but if there is a direct nolle prosequi, any further detention becomes unlawful and unconstitutional,” he said

Standing for the accused persons include the Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, M.C Ijezie and colleagues, and the Legal Aid Counsel, led by Chukwuma Oliver alongside the members of the professional body.

Also present was the controller of Prisons, Chris Okoye, who lauded the CJ for remembering the prison inmates.

He pledged to work in tandem with the judiciary in upholding law.

Meanwhile, the state governor had earlier raised the alarm over ‘looming’ jailbreak at the Owerri Prison as a result of congestion, inadequate facilities. He had noted that the state is worried about the condition and location of the Prison, which is directly opposite the Government House.According to him, “the State is worried about the Owerri Prison congestion and the location of the prison. The site is bad, just opposite the Government House. We are concerned with the number of inmates in the prison without adequate facilities”.He continued that, “the Council is therefore calling on the Federal Government to do something as quickly as possible to relocate the Owerri Prison from where it is now to a suitable place for the purpose of ensuring that we don’t have a jailbreak in the State. The Judiciary also requires a lot of infrastructure and personnel to dispense justice speedily. This will equally help in decongesting the prisons”.
