  • Chieftaincy tussle rocks Ondo community

Crisis is brewing in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko Southwest Local Government Area of Ondo State over the selection of candidate for the community’s vacant stool.

Already, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has been urged to intervene into the chieftaincy tussle.

It was learnt that few days to the exit of the immediate past administration, former Governor Olusegun Mimiko announced Prince Isaac Adeyeye as the Alale-elect.

However, another contender to the throne, who was confirmed as Oba-elect, through an Ikare High Court judgement, Prince Oseni Adu said the only solution to the problem is his installation by the governor.

According to Adu “My attention has been drawn to rumours about the purported recognition of one Adeyeye Ajimoh as the Alale of Akungba-Akoko few hours to the exit of former governor Mimiko’s administration.

“As a matter of fact, the latest dispute as regards Alale’s stool is still before the appellate court with suit No CA/AK/72/14 and yet to be decided”.

He said the High Court, sitting in Ikare-Akoko in a suit no Ak/195/2007 had in a judgement on December 20 2013, delivered by Justice B.S Adeyeye confirmed him as the Alale- elect of Akungba Akoko.

    Abeokuta…Beyond the rocks for launch

    book

Ever been to Abeokuta the Ogun State capital? If you have, you would not miss the imposing rocky hill of Olumo, one of the famous tourist sites in the country. But, there’s more to the ancient city of rusty-brown rooftops and hilly terrain.

It occupies a prime position in the nation’s socio-political development for its many firsts. Abeokuta boasts of the first newspaper-Iwe Irohin, first church, first hospital and first psychiatric hospital in the country and many more ancient sites that define the city.

But, these historical firsts are unknown to many visitors and tourists to the country. Unfortunately, the state government, which ought to derive maximum benefits from promoting these tourism potentials the city possesses, has done little or nothing to push the sector. The result has been a wasting tourism corridor, with just a little light shed on the Olumo Rock, when the Gbenga Daniel-led administration gave the rock a face-lift by developing it and building an elevator that rides to its top from where the city’s breathtaking view can be assessed with stunning effect.

Determined to record history and put everything about the ancient city in a book format, Hakeem Adenekan has published a new standard coffee table book entitled Abeokuta… Beyond the Rocks. The book, which is laced with a vast pictorial layout that puts the city in proper perspective, will be launched on July 4 at June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta. The launch is  a deel between Ogun State Government and Nigeria’s foremost culture centre, Terra Kulture Lagos.

Adenekan took up the project because he felt saddened that there was no literature to capture the rich cultural attractions of Abeokuta to outsiders who might wish to visit and help boost the local economy.

In a chat in Lagos, Adenekan said he is happy that through the book he has been able to keep some aspects of Abeokuta history as many old building have given way to renewed urbanization. He noted that apathy among Nigerians towards record keeping is one great disservice. “Unfortunately, Nigerians don’t have their own history. In order to complete the book, I had to travel UK to get some of the history,” he said.

Adenekan wondered, like most ordinary Nigerians, what the country’s leaders usually bring back as real value from their numerous and wasteful trips abroad when they can’t execute a mere coffee table book to showcase the different attractions in their states, if only for its ego-trip. Having gone abroad for study and other sundry trips and seen firsthand how small things like a coffee table book about cities help boost cities of little consequence, he felt compelled to produce one, as a wakeup call on those whose statutory duty it is to do so back home.

“Like I usually ask people, especially those in government, why don’t you bring something new back to Nigeria among the many good things you see abroad to enrich the stock of what we have here?

“We talk about tourism and all that. What we do in Nigeria is scratch the surface. To realise this book, we went into the archives. The title is from a small survey we did in Lagos on what people want to see if they were to go to Abeokuta as tourism destination. People said they wanted to come to Abeokuta to see Olumo Rock. But there’s more to the city than Olumo Rock. We had to create this compendium that is internationally acceptable.

“The idea came to me while in the United Kingdom studying. We just want to document and keep our history. It’s better for us to start our own documentation and not allow it to be done for us by foreigners. It took five and a half years to put this together. We took aerial photographs of Abeokuta landmarks using a helicopter.”

Adenekan said the challenges he faced while producing the book ranged from Nigeria’s perennial apathy about record-keeping, which is near zero to ‘area boys’ wanting their own share and weather conditions so the photographing could be right. He lamented Nigeria’s poor archiving, adding that on occasion, he had to resort to the British Museum to get certain facts about his own country. Abeokuta… Beyond the rocks will be useful for the general public and those who believe in history.

  • Keshi’s contract talk heading for the rocks

Keshi’s contract talk heading for the rocks

    • As NFF eyes Jonathan’s intervention

In as much as Super Eagles Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi has agreed to continue to coach the senior national football team, the major impediment to signing a new contract remains the monthly wages he is requesting for and such amount presently put at N15 million may not see the light of the day after all.

A top source from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) revealed to SportingLife in Abuja yesterday that there is no way the Federation will be able to pay more than the N5million they have been insisting on to pay the former Green Eagles defender.

As a result of this the source disclosed that they had already put machinery in motion for plan B in other not to caught unawares in case Keshi decides not to take up the job again. The source also added that unless the Federal Government through the National Sports Commission could come to the aid of the NFF to pay the bills of the coach, an agreement might not be reached by both parties at the end of the day.

“As the situation is presently concerning the contract of Coach Stephen Keshi, I would say the ball is in Keshi’s court for us at the NFF to seal his contract once and for all. What people failed to understand is the fact that we labored hard to pay him the N5 million monthly salary we were paying during his first stint with the Eagles as the Chief Coach.

“So, to tell us now to either double or triple Keshi’s monthly salary in the proposed new contract is like a proverbial camel to pass through the eye of the needle. It is absolutely difficult and I don’t see it as a possibility for now.

“The only miracle that I believe could happen to rescue this situation is for our sports loving President Goodluck Jonathan to come to our aid by assisting the Federation in the payment of the Coach’s emoluments. Anything besides that I would say is a ruse. But in the alternative if the Coach agrees with our proposal then the contract will be instantly signed and work will begin.

“This time around what we are guiding against is owing Keshi and other coaches their salaries. We want a situation where their salaries will be paid and get alerts as at when due every month,” the source SportingLife.

The NFF influential member also said that this time around Keshi must be deeply involved in grass-root football and football development in the country is a primary assignment that the coach must ensure it is done in other to produce and prepare enough young and talented football stars for the nation.

“All these will be duly discussed with Keshi and also be enshrined in the contract we will sign with him when we later agree on every areas of the contract,” the source summed up.

  • Turning Jos rocks into bread

    Turning Jos rocks into bread

What will Jos, Plateau State capital, be without its rocks? Perhaps little more than a table land filled with people of different ethnic groups.

Rocks are everywhere. They surround the city. In many cases, they separate one house from another, just as several homes are built on them. Some call the capital, city of rocks. Its home beer is called Rock Lager. Its football team used to be known as Rock Strikers. Indeed, what captures the image of the city better than rocks?

But beyond the mere fact of their abundance, and perhaps that other under-utilised tourism potential, what have the people been making of the rocks? What use have the Jos rocks been? Haven’t people always perceived them as hard, impenetrable objects which often impede movement and even building?

Well, not anymore. Some residents are learning to turn them into bread. Even the old have since discovered that if they cracked some of the rocks, they could make some money selling them to builders.

In the southern Plateau, however, there is not much rock. Except for some parts of Langtang North, all the six local governments in the southern zone are devoid of the kind of rocks you find in the two other zones. This helps to explain why the physical and geographical settings of Plateau south is different from the other two: Plateau south is one part of the state that has hot temperature compare to Plateau North and Plateau Central that has cold temperature.

The availability of these two extreme weather stood Plateau state out as a unique state in the country. If you feel too cold in Plateau North, which is JOS, you can shift base to Langtang, Shendam, Wase or Quan-Pan to feel the warm weather, yet, you are still in the same state, that is Plateau for you.

But beyond the physical and geo

  • Violence rocks Ondo community over kingship tussle

Houses and vehicles were at the weekend destroyed in Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State by hoodlums suspected to be loyal to the embattled Olofun of Ode-Irele Kingdom, Oba Cladius Olarewaju Lebi, following the emergence of another Olofun, Oba Augustine Bamidele Ekunsanmi, the Opetusi (III).

It was gathered that the violence began when the kingmakers were performing the final coronation rites for Ekunsanmi at “Maloku’s Shrine” to replace Lebi, who was sacked by an Okitipupa High Court.

The hoodlums blocked the palace gate situated opposite the major road in the community, hindering the free flow of traffic.

Several ceremonies held on Saturday were disrupted by the hoodlums and guests, particularly those who were not indigenes of the community, fled the town.

Lebi, who has refused to vacate the seat, said he had filed an appeal challenging the lower court’s ruling.

His lead counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun, filed two applications at the Akure Appeal Court, in which hearing will come up on January 27, next year.

The head of the Opetusi Ruling House, Chief Sola Olajide, whose house was among those destroyed, said the Oyelusi Ruling House, which Lebi lays claims to, was not among the three ruling houses that produce the Olofun.

Olajide said members of the Oyelusi Ruling House can only contest the Jomu chieftaincy title, which is the third in command to the monarch.

He said: “In 1993, we challenged Lebi for contesting the seat, but due to his influence with the military, he was installed in 1995, despite the court injunction restraining him from the seat. We went to court to fight for our right and in 2010, the Okitipupa High Court ordered him to stop parading himself as the monarch. It also ordered us to produce a regent, pending the time we produce a new king.

“Though we learnt Lebi has filed an appeal, we have performed the necessary rites for the new Olofun, Ekunsanmi. We began the rites nine days ago and they ended on Saturday.

“We got the hint that the police may prevent the coronation and went to Osogbo, the Osun State capital, to inform the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) in this zone, who gave us some security men and told us to go ahead with the event.”

  • Explosion rocks Ibadan community

    Explosion rocks Ibadan community

There was an explosion at the weekend at Alapata, Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The explosion, which was caused by pipeline vandals, occurred on Saturday night, forcing residents of the agrarian community to abandon their homes.

The valve pit used by the vandals was still burning as at press time yesterday, with thick smoke covering the area. The hose used by the vandals was found burnt at the Valve Pit.

Men of the anti-vandalism squad of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Police, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the State Security Service (SSS) visited the scene yesterday.

An eyewitness said nobody was killed.

A farmer, Alhaji Fatai Ayilara, told reporters that security operatives were alerted when strange movement was noticed around the pit last Wednesday.

Ayilara said: “We noticed strange movements around this area on Wednesday and informed security agents. About eight of them came around and we went round together. On Friday, when I closed from work, I observed that they had tampered with the valve pit. I went round and realised the padlock was intact. There was no damage to the iron there too. I thought the footprints I saw on the bush path were those of the security men.

“On Saturday morning around 10am, I heard noise from the pit hole and told some members of the community to alert security men. However, before we got back, fuel had already started gushing out and spreading into farmlands, a stream and adjourning areas.

“We informed security men and I left. I was later informed that the place caught fire. You can see the burnt hose they used by the pit. We need a bridge here. If a road is built here, people will ply the route and it will reduce the activities of vandals.”

The Chairman of the Ido Local Government Area, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela, urged NNPC to fund a joint security patrol of pipelines in the area.

Olowofela, who spoke with reporters on the scene of the explosion, said an insider was among the vandals.

He urged the National Assembly to set aside a special fund for communities vulnerable to pipeline vandalism.

Olowofela said: “The place gutted fire but you must agree with me that those doing this must have some inside knowledge of how to do the job. I told the General Manager of NNPC that we need to look for a way of jointly funding a team to patrol NNPC pipelines in the council. It will be a joint effort between the community, NNPC and the council.”

CONTRARY to the news making the rounds that the marriage of screen diva, Dakore Egbuson, to the billionaire-cum-politician Chief Harry Akande’s son, Olumide, will take her off klieglights, the mother of one has continued to rock the social circuit.

The Bayelsa State born scandal- free actress was among guests who stormed the launch of Giorgio Armani’s fragrances last weekend at the Essenza Store located at The Palms Shopping Mall, Lekki.

The event which started with a champagne reception also allowed guests to be photographed on the red carpet. Mr.Kayode Kasumu, the CEO of the Essenza Stores, treated the guests to a goodie bag each with a bottle of the newly launched fragrances.

  • Students flee as bomb rocks Maiduguri

After a long lull, the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has been gripped by fears, with explosions in a community populated by students. There was no report of any casualty when CAMPUSLIFE visited the scene, but four days later, a student was found dead on the campus.

Gwange is one of the host communities of the campus of the university. All was calm in the community last Wednesday evening as students returned from their daily routine.

Some were relaxing in their hostels after strenuous academic engagements; others were trekking to their abodes.

Suddenly, deafening reverberating explosions hit the community. The blasts were followed by sporadic shooting by men of the Joint Task Force (JTF). There was stampede as students and indigenes fled the scene for safety. The bombs were said to have been planted in a building occupied by indigenes of the community.

When the news got to Mairi, another host community of UNIMAID, which borders Gwange and where majority of students living off-campus reside, there was confusion. Students quickly left their hostels and moved, in their numbers, into the school for fear of being attacked. As they were moving to the campus, they called their colleagues to leave their rooms for safety on campus.

Last Sunday, occupants of Muritala Hall on the campus woke up to discover the body of a female student at a dumpsite behind the hostel. The deceased, whose name was given as Yeleruby Birgamus, was a 500-Level student of the Fisheries Department.

The incident heightened the fear of students, who were still dazed by the explosion that rocked the university’s host community.

The student was said to have left her hostel to read at night on Saturday but was found dead Sunday morning. A 200-Level female student, who pleaded for anonymity, said: “We woke up this morning to discover the wrapped body of the student dumped on this site. We saw beside her a Bible, a mobile phone and books, which made us understand that she was coming from night class. We had to notify the management, who in turn invited soldiers and medical personnel to evacuate the body.”

There were speculations that she might have been raped on her way back to the hostel but the Director of Information, Mr Mohammed Ahmad, said the rape story was false, confirming that Yelerubi’s death was suicide.

Speaking to our correspondent on telephone, Ahmad said: “The substances found with Yelerubi’s body showed that she committed suicide and the corpse had been handed over to the police.

“We discovered that she wrote some phone numbers with a message on a paper, which she placed in the Bible found with her lifeless body. The message read: ‘Call these people when I die and tell them that we shall meet there’. So, I can confirm to you that Yelerubi committed suicide.”

Ahmad declined to comment on Gwange bomb blast, saying it was outside the university’s jurisdiction.

When our correspondent visited the hostel of the deceased, one of her roommates, who pleaded anonymity, said the late Ruby may have died as a result of frustration.

“Ruby had complained to me several times that she was getting frustrated having spent seven years in school because of carry-overs that have prevented her graduation over the years,” the student said.

A student, who fled his Gwange residence, told CAMPUSLIFE: “I just returned from school and was contemplating on what to prepare for dinner when we heard multiple blasts. I rushed out of my room to know what was happening because it was unusual in the area. The sound of the explosion was reverberating and very close. Immediately, I sensed danger. I was still reflecting on what to do when I saw students running from all directions and heading towards Gate 5. At that point, I didn’t need to be told that there is fire on the mountain. I ran to my room, picked my bag and joined in the race to the school.”

The student, who is now seeking refuge in Ado Bayero Hall, added: “Due to the size of the Gate 5, there was a stampede as we all struggled to enter the small opening of the gate at the same time.”

At the sight of their fleeing colleagues, students living on campus were worried and confused because of fear of infiltration by Boko Haram members. CAMPUSLIFE gathered that those who went to read in lecture halls and classrooms returned to their rooms while various associations’ meetings scheduled for the night were cancelled.

At the time of this report, the commercial area on campus was still being occupied by the fleeing students.

A 300-Level student, who identified himself as Marvis, said he was writing his assignment in a classroom when he heard the explosions. “I heard 11 explosions within minutes; I rushed out of the class to know what was happening. Students in the adjoining classroom also ran out. I packed my books immediately and left for the hostel,” Marvis said.

Emeka Simon, a medical student, who was reading in a class when the incident happened, said he left the class with other students.

Narrating his experience to CAMPUSLIFE, a 100-Level student, James Chidozie, who lives off-campus, said he was riding in a taxi to his hostel when the bombs went off.

He said: “I was about to alight in front of the University Teaching Hospital when one of the soldiers attached to the hospital spotted our taxi and shot in our direction. He probably thought we were on a negative mission. The taxi sped off but the driver dropped me at a safe location and told me to trek back to the hospital.

“But for fear of stray bullets and the crisis in that area, I was confused because I didn’t know who or where to run to. Luckily for me, I met a lady, who spoke kindly to me. After listening to my predicament, she spoke to her parents and they allowed me to pass the night with them. Since I had no option, I passed the night with an unknown family.“
