Rohr lists Mikel, Ikeme, 21 others for Tanzania

Nigeria’s Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr has invited 23 players, including Captain Mikel John Obi and goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, for next month’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against the Taifa Stars of Tanzania.

The match is a dead rubber, as both teams have been eliminated, but Rohr and the Super Eagles are using the game as rehearsal for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying series Matchday 1 clash with Zambia in Ndola in October.

The Franco-German, named Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles by the NFF two weeks ago, has called up three goalkeepers, eight defenders, four midfielders and eight forwards for the game scheduled for the Akwa Ibom International Stadium, Uyo on Saturday, 3rd September.

Captain Mikel John Obi, whose sterling leadership of the Nigeria U23 to the Bronze Medal match of the Rio 2016 Olympics has drawn global applause, is joined in the midfield by the energetic Ogenyi Onazi, Belgium –based former youth international Wilfred Ndidi and Israel –based Nosa Igiebor, who has not featured for Nigeria since missing the cut for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Emmanuel Daniel, who has done his reputation no harm with some breath –taking reflex saves at the Olympics, joins Carl Ikeme and Ikechukwu Ezenwa to fight for the gloves, while home –based Jamiu Alimi finds a place amongst Leon Balogun, William Troost-Ekong, Chidozie Awaziem, Abdullahi Shehu, Musa Muhammed, Elderson Echiejile and Kingsley Madu in the defence.

Rohr, a former defender, has also opted for a strong attacking line, with assistant captain Ahmed Musa leading Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Victor Moses, Imoh Ezekiel, Odion Ighalo, Brown Ideye and youngster Victor Osimhen.

All the players have been directed to report in Uyo on Sunday, 28th August 2016.

Rohr to pay wages of his assistant coaches

According to reports gathered by Owngoalnigeria.com, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) won’t be responsible for the other assistants new Super Eagles coach Genort Rohr plans to bring with him.

The NFF on their part employed three local coaches to work with the 64-year-old, but the former Mali and Burkina Faso manager wants three additional assistants.

“We gathered that the German wants two additional assistants, aside the one approved by the NFF as his direct assistants but from the look of things he will be responsible for their wages.

”Rohr wants to bring in two additional assistants and at the moment from what I know, their wages will be handled by him while the NFF will handle the one assistant approved for him,” a source told Owngoalnigeria.com.

”Remember as part of the cost saving measures of the NFF, assistant coaches employed by the NFF will only earn allowances as their role is just part time, it will be foolhardy to pay Rohr’s assistant.”

Norway-based Troost-Ekong is currently leading the defence line of the country at the Rio Olympics.

The central defender, who was eligible to also feature for Holland by virtue of his Dutch mother, debuted for Nigeria against Chad in an AFCON qualifier in Kaduna in June 2015.

Musa, on the other hand, made his long-awaited Eagles bow against Mali in a friendly in France in May.

He also featured in a 3-1 win over Luxembourg that same month.

He is an all-action right fullback, who has captained both the country’s U-17 and U-20s.
