Ronaldo canvasses rebuilding of Man United

Cristiano Ronaldo said his former club Manchester United must rebuild everything from the bottom up if they are to compete for the top titles again.

The 39-year-old Portugal forward won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and a Club World Cup crown during his first stint at United from 2003-2009 and said he still loves the club, who finished eighth in the league last season.

Speaking on the ‘Rio Ferdinand Presents’ podcast, Ronaldo said he was happy with the way the club’s administrators, led by INEOS boss Jim Ratcliffe, were investing in infrastructure.

“They need to rebuild everything, in my opinion … the club needs time to rebuild because it’s still one of the best clubs in the world, but they need to change. They understand that this is the only way,” British media quoted him as saying.

“I believe that the future will be bright. I believe, but they don’t depend only on the talents. They have to rebuild from the bottom. If not, they cannot compete. It will be impossible.”

United manager Erik Ten Hag has come under pressure already after two defeats in their opening three games and Ronaldo said he should lean on his former United teammate Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was hired as an assistant coach.

“You cannot rebuild a club without knowledge,” he said. “I believe that Ruud is going to help because he was inside the club. He knows the club, he knows the fans. If the coach listens to him, I think they can improve a little bit the club.”

Ronaldo decries Ten Hag’s attitude at Man United

Cristiano Ronaldo says Erik ten Hag’s attitude is too negative, urging the Manchester United manager to target the Premier League title even though the club need to “rebuild from the bottom”.

The Portugal star, who now plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, fell out with Ten Hag before his second spell at Old Trafford ended late in 2022.

Ronaldo believes his former club needs sweeping changes but that Ten Hag should not rule out winning major trophies in the meantime.

The Dutchman has said he is “quite confident” of claiming more silverware this campaign after lifting the League Cup and FA Cup over the past two seasons.

But he said in July his team are a “long way away” from being ready to win the Premier League, which they have not won since Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge in 2013.

“Manchester, they need to rebuild everything, in my opinion,” Ronaldo said in an episode of the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast. “The coach, they say they cannot compete to win the league and Champions League. Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you’re not going to fight to win the league or Champions League.

“You have to be, to mentally say, listen, maybe we don’t have that potential, but I cannot say that. We’re going to try. You have to try.”

United upset Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May but they endured their worst Premier League campaign last term, finishing eighth, and the 20-time English champions have lost two of their opening three matches this season.

“This club needs time to rebuild because it’s still one of the best clubs in the world, but they need to change,” Ronaldo said. “They understand that. This is the only way. This is why they show, they start to change again, the structure of the club, the president, the infrastructures and everything. The owners of the club.”

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe completed his purchase of a minority stake in the club in February and has since overseen major changes in the club hierarchy after taking control of football operations.

“I believe that the future will be bright,” said Ronaldo. “I believe, but they don’t depend only on the talents. It’s more than that. It’s all club, all, not only players, club, everything as a unit, united.

“They have to rebuild from the bottom. If not, they cannot compete. It will be impossible.”

Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo, who spent six seasons with United earlier in his career, scored 27 goals in 54 appearances during his second spell at Old Trafford after signing from Juventus in 2021.

Following his exit just over a year later, he claimed he felt “betrayed”, while saying of Ten Hag: “I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me.”

However, the 39-year-old said he still loves the club.

“I’m not happy the way it all happened but, in the same way, we cannot control some points of our life sometimes, but it’s done, already done,” he said.

“To prove that I’m right or wrong, this is not my issue any more. I say what I have to say and for me it’s done.”

He added: “I love that club. I’m not that kind of guy that forgot the past.”

EURO 2024: Three things to learn from Ronaldo’s tears after penalty loss

Cristiano Ronaldo missed the chance to gift Portugal the win in extra time after a foul on Diogo Jota by a Slovenian defender in the box.

After scoring his previous 29 penalties, Ronaldo was visibly stunned to see Oblak keep out his shot and was seen in tears.

However, Ronaldo later scored in the first penalty shootout, taking responsibility for the initial miss.

Here are a few things to learn from the Portugal skipper’s tears:

    1. Ronaldo’s tears showed his passion for his national side.

It has been discussed over the years that some players do not give their all on the pitch, or fight for the badge, however, Ronaldo canceled the thoughts revealing that he missed a penalty that could have led his country into the quarterfinals.

    2. Brought togetherness in the team

It was rumoured that the Portugal team had some discrepancies, saying Ronaldo had arguments with teammates, Joao Cancelo and Bruno Fernandes respectively.

However, both players were the first to console him after the penalty loss.

    3. Leadership mentality

After losing the penalty in extra-time, Ronaldo stepped up to take the first penalty in the shootout, which is against his normality, Ronaldo enjoys taking the last penalty so he can “show off”, however, the reverse was the case this time and scoring, he apologized to the crowd.

Eyes on Ronaldo as Portugal open Euro 2024 account

Portugal defender Ruben Dias said Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence shows their squad they can achieve anything as they prepare to make their Euro 2024 bow against the Czech Republic today..

Portugal won Euro 2016 and are spearheaded by 39-year-old superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo, preparing to play at a record-extending sixth Euros.

Ronaldo, the record men’s international goalscorer with 130 strikes for his country, is also the all-time top scorer at the tournament with 14, a distance ahead of former France great Michel Platini in second spot on nine goals.

“I would say he represents inspiration, he represents that anything is possible, he represents all that you can dream, and achieve it,” Manchester City centre-back Dias told a news conference. “Mainly I would like to say it’s a pleasure to have him with us. More than all these little things or big things, him being with us in this moment of his career represents that he wants to win again.

“He’s our captain and obviously we follow him to the end.”

If Ronaldo scores at the Euros this summer he will become the competition’s oldest goalscorer of all-time, breaking a record set by Austria’s Ivica Vastic at 38 in Euro 2008.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez said Ronaldo’s experience could be vital at the tournament, along with veteran centre-back Pepe, 41.

”(Ronaldo) is very important… at tournaments, Euros and World Cups, the key is a mix of experience and new talent,” said Martinez. “Our team does it perfectly – you mentioned Cristiano, and him and Pepe bring experience nobody else has, they are the two oldest players at the tournament.

“Then we have (the young players too)… we need all of this, they all need to be linked together, committed, that is crucial for us.”

Czech Republic and West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek said his team could not afford to let their guard down against the Al Nassr striker.

“We all know Ronaldo’s quality especially if you give him space,” Soucek told a news conference. “We can’t give him an inch, especially in the area – (there) we need to double our defence on him.

“Our goal is to stop him but obviously we need to stop the rest of the Portuguese team too.”

If Ronaldo fires then Portugal may be able to live up to their billing as one of the favourites to win the tournament.

Martinez said he was aiming for that when asked if he had packed enough clothes in his suitcase to go the full distance.

“We must believe, we need to dream big – if we don’t dream big then it will be tough,” he said.

“Tomorrow will be the right time to show we are ready, that we can meet all the expectations, but after the first three matches we can gauge whether or not we deserve to stay or not.

“I brought seven shirts, not three.”

Ronaldo in tears as Al Nassr lose King’s Cup final

Cristiano Ronaldo was left in tears after his Al Nassr side lost the Saudi King’s Cup final to Al Hilal in a penalty shootout on Friday to end the season without a trophy.

Al Hilal triumphed 5-4 on penalties to complete the league and cup double after the match in Jeddah ended 1-1 in regulation time and extra time failed to provide a winner.

Following Al Nassr’s defeat, Ronaldo sunk to the turf and was inconsolable as teammates and coaching staff tried to comfort him.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was eventually led off the field but continued to be overcome with emotion as he sat on the sideline before collecting his runners-up medal.

The loss completes a frustrating season for Ronaldo. Al Nassr finished a distant second to Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League and were beaten in the quarterfinals of the Asian Champions League.

Ronaldo was also suspended for an obscene gesture in February at Al Shabab fans who had been chanting the name of Lionel Messi, Ronaldo’s longstanding rival.

However, the 39-year-old did achieve plenty of personal accolades. In his first full Saudi Pro League season, the Portugal forward scored a record-breaking 35 goals.

But he could do nothing to prevent his side’s loss on Friday, despite finding the net in the shootout.

Aleksandar Mitrovic put Al Hilal ahead in the seventh minute before Aiman Yahya sent the game to extra time with an 88th-minute equaliser. An eventful contest saw the referee produce three red cards, with David Ospina sent off for Al Nassr in the 57th minute before Ali Al-Bulayhi and Kalidou Koulibaly followed late on for Al Hilal.

Al Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was eventually the hero as he saved Al Nassr’s final two penalties to secure the trophy

Al Hilal’s success has come despite star Brazilian forward Neymar missing almost the entire season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee in October, shortly after joining from Paris Saint-Germain. While not on the field, Neymar was again in attendance on Friday to cheer on his team from the stands.

Saudi FA bans Ronaldo over obscene gesture to fans chanting ‘Messi’

Cristiano Ronaldo has been banned for one match by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) over his obscene celebration on Sunday.

In a statement on Wednesday, February 28, the disciplinary committee said the decision is not subject to appeal.

The Portuguese International was also asked to pay a fine of 10,000 Saudi riyals ($2,666) to the Saudi Football Federation and 20,000 riyals to Al Shabab to cover the costs of the complaint filing fees.

Ronaldo scored in Al-Nassr’s 3-2 win away to Al-Shabab in their Saudi Pro League match, leading to chants of Lionel Messi, his perennial rival, by the home supporters.

This provoked a response from Ronaldo who cupped his ear before repeatedly pumping his hand forward in front of his pelvic area.

His action appeared to be directed at the rival Al Shabab supporters.

Although the celebration was not captured on local broadcasts, a fan uploaded the video on social media.

The footage was presented to the disciplinary and ethics committee of the SAFF who stated that the Portuguese striker violated article 57-1 of the disciplinary and ethics regulations.

It is the eighth disciplinary action of Ronaldo’s storied career and his first since joining Al-Nassr.

He was previously fined and banned for two matches in November 2022 by the English FA for smashing the mobile phone of a young fan during his second spell at Manchester United.

Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr on a free transfer from Manchester United in December 2022. He has scored 20 goals in 22 league games this season for Al-Nassr.
