How YouTube solved Nollywood’s royalty problem, by Ronke Oshodi-Oke

Actress Ronke Oshodi-Oke has highlighted how YouTube has revolutionized the Nigerian film industry, giving filmmakers greater control over their work.

Speaking on Nollywood On Radio, she explained that before the rise of YouTube, many creators struggled to earn royalties, as third-party marketers often withheld payments, forcing filmmakers to “manage and try” to survive.

With YouTube, however, Ronke said filmmakers can now produce, market, and distribute their content independently while retaining all income generated.

“Before, it used to be very difficult to get royalties when you produced a movie. Thank God now that you have your own YouTube—you are your own marketer, your own producer, your own executive producer. You do everything on your own. Nobody owes you anything,” she said.

According to her, this shift has made Nollywood more inclusive, enabling creators to connect directly with audiences and build sustainable incomes.

Drawing from her decades of experience in the industry, Ronke described YouTube as a game-changer whose impact will continue to shape Nollywood for years to come.

Actress Ronke Oshodi-Oke has commended Iyabo Ojo for including her ex-husband in their daughter Priscilla’s wedding ceremony, describing Iyabo as a devoted mother.

Speaking in an interview on Oyinmomo TV, Oshodi said: “I give kudos to Iyabo Ojo. When Priscilla and her brother were young, she was always going everywhere with them. She is a devoted mother. I now respect her more when I saw Priscilla’s dad at the wedding. I also learnt a lesson from her”.

Ronke also weighed in on the backlash faced by gospel singer Tope Alabi over her ex-husband’s absence at their daughter’s wedding, suggesting the decision might have been influenced by the 27-year-old daughter.

“Don’t let us blame Tope Alabi for not allowing the father of her daughter to be present at her wedding. The girl is 27 years old, maybe she was the one that didn’t want to see her dad. She is an adult. If she really wanted her dad, she would have insisted to her mum,” Ronke added.

Ronke emphasised the importance of understanding in personal family matters, noting that each situation is unique.
