    Rotary District 9112 inducts lawyer as second governor

    A Lawyer, Lanre Adedoyin, has been inducted as  second governor of Rotary Installation District 9112.

    At the event in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, District’s Chair of Installation Committee, Mrs Tolulope Onalaja, said: “The installation is a milestone in his (Adedoyin’s) Rotaray journey. It symbolises his commitment to lead with dedication, integrity and passion while inspiring others in this noble cause.’’

    She urged members and guests to donate at the fund raiser aimed at generating funds to prosecute their projects and programmes for the year. She commended those who donated towards the installation to make it a success.

    Pioneer District Governor, Femi Adenekan, who handed over to Adedoyin, thanked members for their support, urging them to extend the same to his successor. He listed his achievements as construction of a vocational centre, worth N325 million in Epe, planting of 5,000 coconut trees, returning over 800 out-of-school children in Lagos, founding of over 11 clubs, especially the Satellite Club, and growing membership by 400.

    Others are donation of medical consumables to Lagos State University Children’s Hospital.

    He thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his Ogun counterpart Dapo Abiodun, for their support.

    Adedoyin, from Kwara, promised to prioritise mother and child health care. He said: “We need to support our members and children with medical facilities and amenities to reduce pressure on them.’’

    Adedoyin, who has spent over two decades in Rotary, promised to put his wealth of experience to bear in his new assignment for the benefit of Nigerians. “Ï have gone through the rudiments and prepared to lead with integrity, serve with passion, commitment and dedication,’’ he added.

    He urged Nigerians to keep hope alive in the face of the economic downturn, saying there is a better tomorrow.

    Adedoyin gave awards to the following: Managing Director, Parallex Bank, Femi Bakare; Group CEO, Arravo, Ayo Adegboyega and Special Adviser, Media to the Lagos State governor, Gboyega Akosile.

    Sanwo-Olu was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Bimbo Salu-Hundeyin.

    At the ceremony were District 9112 Governor-Elect (DGN), Layi Abidoye, District 9112 Governor-Nominee (DGN), Uyi Sowobi; DG 9111, Henry Akinyele, his immediate past predecessor, Oluwole Kukoyi; Past Rotary International Vice President Yinka Babalola; Olumo of Orile Igbon,Oyo State, Oba Francis Olusola Alao, a representative of the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, among others.

    Rotary gifts N13.5m scholarships to 22 undergraduates

    ROTARY District 9112 has offered scholarships to 22 undergraduates in Lagos and Ogun states, its area of coverage.

    At the presentation, the Chairperson, District Education and Welfare Endowment Fund (DEWEF) Scholarship Committee, Abosede Ewumi, said the beneficiaries, who are 200 level brilliant but indigent students of higher institutions cutting across various disciplines, underwent rigorous screening after their selection by clubs.

    He said though 104 were invited for the exam conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), only 69 turned up, of which 33 passed. In the interview that followed, 22 candidates qualified.

    She announced that each of them would receive N250,000 yearly throughout their programmes. However, the 80 students on their scholarship list would continue to receive N100,000 earlier earmarked for them.

    Ewumi said Rotary would mentor the students and ensure that they graduate with flying colours, adding that in the past many scholars finished with a first class.

    On why they embarked on the scheme, she said: “Rotary believes is giving back to society, which is our core mandate.’’ She appealed to the public to support it to enable it to give to more students.

    Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), DEWEF, Yomi Adewunmi, noted that the scholarship scheme, which started in1991 in District 9111, now has 237 awardees, adding that it was aimed at making people know about Rotary activities. He expressed satisfaction that the objective had been achieved.

    He said DEWEF is registered, urging the public to join Rotary and support it.

    District 9112 Governor, Femi Adenekan, congratulated the awardees and tasked them. He advised: “See yourself as good ambassadors of DEWEF. Ensure you fly higher by coming out with better results. You are the future of Nigeria and family.’’

     An awardee, Damilola Ologun, a 200 level Accounting student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), thanked Rotary for the gesture.

    Also at the ceremony were the DG-Elect, Lanre Adedoyin; DG-Nominee, Layi Abidoye; District Secretary, Wilson Esangbedo; and Treasurer, Bayo Erinle.

    Rotary targets $1m at fundraiser

    Rotary District 9112 has held at its fundraiser for its foundation, in Victoria Island, Lagos targeting $1million

    It also celebrated the 120th anniversary of Rotary International Foundation.

    Chairman of the district’s Rotary Foundation Dinner and Dance Planning Committee, Omotunde Olaleye, said as Rotary’s engine of projects and programmes, the funds realised from the event would be channelled to the foundation for disbursements to their seven focal areas, namely, peace promotion, clean water provision, disease fighting,mother and child-life saving, environment protection, education support, and local economies growth, urging Rotarians and guests to donate generously.

    District 9112 Governor, Femi Adenekan noted that in 1917, the Rotary pioneer President, Arch Klumph, floated “the idea of founding an endownment fund to support Rotary’scharitable endeavours’’. The result was the foundation ‘’that would allow Rotary to respond to humanitarian crises and support projects that promoted peace, education and health’’.
