    Omotoso, others urge Rotarians to share their stories

    Members of Rotary International District 9111 have been asked to showcase their activities to enable the public to be aware of them.

    Speakers, who included the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Strategy, Mr. Gebenga Omotoso; Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Ogun State governor,Mr Kayode Akinmade; Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, Kayode Ogundipe; Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Lagos Chapter, Samuel Ayetutu; and Chief Executive Officer, Ritemate Technology Limited, Jide Ogunleye, gave the advice at a seminar held by the district for its public image officers in Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

    The event had as its theme, ‘’Strengthening Rotary’s credibility and visibility through strategic communication’’.

    Omotoso, a keynote speaker, who cautioned Rotarians against telling their stories to ‘’the general public, said it is better to be specific as the public remains so. He continued: “There is no more general public anyway. Every public has its own character. Every public has its own assets. Every public has its own values that it’s sharing. So, if you want to communicate with anybody at all, try to go directly. If you are talking to a group of drivers, address them as a group of professionals who are drivers or talking to doctors, talking to the engineers, forget about the idea of saying general public. So, as Rotarians, you are part of a global community that brings people together to make a difference. And your work is built on unity, trust, intelligence and a commitment to serving others. But in today’s fast-paced media-driven world, today’s tech world, it’s not enough just for you to do good. You need to share your stories. You need to communicate inspiring actions.

    “Strategic communication is the attribute of your mission for setting life into our vision of a world where people unite to make a difference. By sharing your stories, you write your achievements and showcase the impact of your work. You can amplify it for every relationship which is communication, and is responsible for our actions and services.

    “It’s about listening, engaging, and building long-lasting relationships. It’s about being authentic, being transparent, being original and accountable. It’s about standing up to believe that it is what is right all the time. It’s about putting in maximum effort for a better world through peace and unity. It’s about visiting and using our collective power to drive for positive change what impacts society and the world.’’

    Akinmade, who was represented by Mrs Abolanle Ogunlami, submitted that strategic communication would enhance programmes and projects of Rotarians. He however said there were challenges to be tackled. He listed these as limited resources, changing landscape, and impact measurement, among others.

    He proffered partnerships, surveys, utilisation of good media as solutions to the problems.

    Ogundipe said public image is key to Rotary and even the government. He canvassed positive image making, saying it is good for Rotary.

    Ogundipe, who is the President, Rotary Club of Ewutuntun, added: The theme is apt and timely, reiterating that good image is important.

    Ayetutu spoke on the proper use of Rotray’s logo in their communication. He presented pictures of where the logo was wrongly used in the past. He also demonstrated where the logo could be got and deployed for effectiveness.

    Ogunleye urged Rotarians to use social media to communicate their activities to the global audience. He also said personal handlers are equally good. However, he warned against breaking the rules as such could attract legal sanctions.

    The District Governor, Prince Henry Akinyele, said the objective of the training was to hone the skills of the Public Image chairs to make them effective and efficient. He canvassed a strong public image as vital to attract new members, make impact and build relationships.Thus he advised the good use of public relations strategies for the promotion of Rotary’s activities. “How we present ourselves to the public is good. It opens new doors to partnerships,’ he said.

    Zone 4 Rotary Clubs hold summit on quality leadership

    Zone 4 of Rotary International District 9111 on Friday hosted Multi-Clubs’ leadership summit at Business Hall, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

    The Zone 4 comprises: Club of Ojodu, Omole Golden, Ogba, Alakuko, Beckley Estate, Ijoko, Ijoko Premier, Iyana Iyesi Ota, Iju Spring and Abule-Egba Metro.

    Others were: New Oko-Oba Metro,  Newtown Oko-Oba. Ota, Ikeja Golden Impact, Connect Ijoko, E-Club of Omole Golden and Alagbado Urban.

    The event was part of efforts to strengthen leadership quality and expand humanitarian services across all communities.

    The summit was presided over by District 9111 Governor, Rtn Prince Henry Akinyele.

    Akinleye, in his opening remarks said the summit was so important for the humanitarian service group ”because it provides a platform for collaboration more knowledge, planning, strategizing for leadership development, fostering international goodwill and peace among members united by the “Service Above Self and Unite For Good”

     He enjoined members to recruit more members and address community needs, emphasizing these as key to Rotary’s growth and community impact.

     His message encourages clubs to invite new people, retain existing members, and conduct service projects to serve their communities.

     The first speaker, PDG Omotunde Lawson, who is District Leaning Facilitator, presented a paper presentation on “Healthy Club experience – Principles and Rule of Law”

     She emphasised the importance of collaboration, mutual success, and operate within the ambit of the guilding rules of Rotary Clubs International.

     PDG Bola Oyebade gave lecture on Membership – “100% membership retention and sustainable growth is achievable: exciting club experience is the panacea,” urging members to embrace discipline, peace and unity.

     IPDG Wole Kukoyi, lectured on Rotary Foundation:  “Writing successful global grant application – overcoming the obstacles. While Rtn Dr Bolaji Femi taught the participants on “career switch as the new norm,”

     They encouraged participants to become self-aware, be hungry to learn and embrace resilience.

     The programme was put together by the Zonal Coordinator PAG Adesina Abiola and Chaired by the District Governor. According to PAG Adesina, it was serious engagement to drive transformation and progress to renewing members commitment for Rotary organizational vision and goals.

    Rotary District 9111 Club organises training

    Rotary International District 9111 has organised a leadership and teamwork seminar for members to enhance the leadership skills and teamwork abilities.

    The 2025-2026 Rotary International message for the two-day District Learning Assembly (DLA) programme was ‘Unite for good’ and the theme was ‘Leading with Purpose and Passion.’

     The event was organized by the largest humanitarian service group in the Lekki-Epe area of Lagos State.

    Speaking at the event, District Governor-elect/Convener 2025-2026, Rtn (Prince) Henry Akinyele, said the DTA was organized for Rotary Clubs’ incoming boards, presidents – elect, secretaries, treasurers, membership chairs and foundation chairs who would be serving in 2025- 2026 Rotary year, aiming at Rotary year to acquitting them with more knowledge and understanding for effective service delivery.

    Akinyele appealed to all participants to make use of the training to improve service delivery and to clubs under the district to foster leadership development through mentorship and by actively involving members in various leadership roles within the club and in service projects.

     One of the guest speakers, Past District Governor, (PDG) Rtn Oladeinde Soga, who delivered paper on strategic planning, said the primary purpose of organizing strategic planning training for Rotarians was to equip them and even their different organizations with the skills and knowledge to develop, implement, and evaluate effective strategic plans.

    Incoming officers of Rotary International District 9111 have been trained on the specifics and expectations of their jobs.

    The event, entitled:  “District 9111 Team Learning Seminar (DTLS),” was held in Lagos.

    It was attended by the newly elected District Governor, Henry Akinyele; District Governor Nominee-Designate, Samuel Ayetutu, other district officers as well as clubs’ chairmen, and cabinet members.

    Welcoming the participants, District 9111 Governor, Dr. Wole Kukoyi, said: “We are training the leaders that will be managing the district in the next year, and of course, you know, that knowledge of it is extremely important.’’

     He said the incoming leaders would gain enough knowledge on Rotary’s work and how to network with one another, and  have fun at the end of the year.

     Akinyele, who noted the theme for 2025-2026 Rotary year, “Unite for good”, said participants would be trained on teamwork, effective communication skills, developing action plans for achievement of goals, and setting of afficient goals.

    DTLS Coordinator, George Ikpekhia, who described the training as the first of its kind since the creation of the district last year, said it was needed to hone the skills of the new leaders for them  to perform excellently.

    He advised his colleagues to take the training seriously as no knowledge gained is lost, adding that they might need such knowledge not only in Rotary but also in other areas of their lives.

    He listed the facilitators as past district governor, Remi Bello;  first female district governor, Mrs Omotunde Lawson; past district governor,  Patrick Ikheloa; past district governor, Kola Shodipo; and past District Governor Wale Ogunbadejo.

    Mrs Lawson, a retired school principal and administrator, said Rotary takes training of officers and members seriously, such that from time to time they are trained and retrained, to make them effective in their discharge of their duties.

    Rotary District 9111 offers free eye surgeries to 1,000

    Rotary International District 9111 will today kick off free cataract surgery outreaches for 1,000 in Lagos and Ogun states.

    District Governor, Dr Wole Kukoyi, said the outreaches are held in partnership with Eye Foundation Centre for Prevention of Blindness.

     Rotary District 9111 Mission for Vision Planning Committee Chair, Jerry Aigheyisi, said screening would be held in three centres: Lagos today, January 21, and January 23, at Rotary Centre in Ikeja.

    Screening at Ota, Ogun State, will be held at Eye Foundation Hospital, Ota, on Thursday, January 14,  January 16, February 4, 6, 11, 13, 25, and 27.

     In Abeokuta, screening will hold at Rotary House on January 14, 28, 30, and February 18 as well as 20, 8 am and 4 pm.

     Secretary of the committee, Ayo Dada, said: “The project is about restoring sight and rekindling hope, enhancing dignity, and improving quality of life.’’

    He urged patients to avail themselves of the opportunity to get free eye consultation, drugs and treatment.

    Rotary unveils logo, lights torch for ROSFEST 2025

    Rotary International District 9111 has launched its maiden sport logo for their 2024/25 year as well as lightning  its torch in preparation for the kick-off of the games  christened Rotary Sports Festival (ROSFEST).

    Performing the ceremonies at the Rotary Centre in Ikeja GRA, Lagos, its District 9111 Governor, Dr. Wole Kukoyi, said Rotary recognises the functions of sports in not only unifying people but in also boosting their health and well-being.

    He assured that the games would kick off soon and enjoined every Rotarian to participate in them.

    The District ROSFEST Chair,  Uche Okafor, noted that this was the first time the district would hold such a ceremony.

    Reiterating the role of sports in humanity, Okafor the ceremony was open to both Rotarians and non-Rotarians. He listed the games on offer as football, lawn tennis, table tennis, scrabble, ayo, draft, chess and among others.

    The date of the events fixed for next January would be announced later, he added.

    At the event were District 9112 Governor-elect, Lanre Adedoyin; Past District 9110 Governor Mrs. Omotunde Lawson and ROSFEST Committee Secretary, Angela Nnodim.
