Rotary raises fund for community projects

It was a gathering of families, friends, well-wishers and members of the Rotary Club of Agege District 9110, Nigeria. They gathered to raise funds for its various community projects. The event was also used to install Rotarian Kolawole Ojelabi, President, Christ Ambassador Society of Christ Church, Elere-Agege, as the 32nd president of the club for the Rotary year 2015 to 2016.

The event began with recitation of some lines of rotary anthem. After the recital, Mr Ojelabi, his wife, Olumuyiwa and some other dignitaries, including the outgone President, Rotarian Adeniji Agboola, his wife and Mrs Lydia Ojelabi (mother of the new president) were invited to the top table amid applause.

Rotarian Seyi Martins presented Rotarian Ojelabi to the gathering after which Mr Agboola installed him as President of the club.

He removed the rotary neck tag and hung it on Mr Ojelabi and inducted him as a world-class President of Agege amid ovation by guests. Agboola and Ojelabi hugged each other after.

Mr Agboola described the new President as someone to be proud of anytime.

The club’s past presidents, members’ families and well-wishers embraced and congratulated the new president on his achievement.

In his speech, Mr Ojelabi said he was happy that members of the club are rejoicing with him. He recalled his past challenges as a Rotarian, saying Rotarian Agnes Olatunmi later brought him back to rotary after five years of nonattendance.

Reeling off some projects he intends to execute during his tenure, Ojelabi said: “During my tenure, I will assist children in orphanage homes; provide relief for internally-displaced persons (IDPs); support post-graduate students; carry out health education programmes; provide six-room toilet facility and water at Central African Primary School, Oniwaya Agege; promote breastfeeding campaigns in selected government hospitals in Agege; renovate dilapidated six-classroom block at Anwar-Ul-Islam Nursery and Primary School, Ogba and provide micro-credit loans to members of the community, among others.”

In his speech, the guest speaker, Mr Sam Omatseye emphasised on volunteerism in the society. He said volunteerism comprises people who have ambition and passion for the less-privileged people.

Mr Omatseye, who is the Chairman, Editorial Board, The Nation Newspaper, defined the less-privileged as people who are in need of water; skills; academic enlightenment and shelter, among others. He said a group of church members built a library and provided books for inmates of Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in Apapa.

He recalled how he learnt how to nail a wood to the wall to prevent it from being blown off by windstorm or rainstorm. This, he said, was for members of a family who were living in dilapidated house in the United Kingdom. He added that there is a bad form of volunteerism that is made up of people who take pleasure in destroying people’s lives through killing, embezzlement of government funds, thereby causing increase in poverty.

Mr Omatseye said: “The club is one of the good forms of volunteerism, as the members are always ready to cater for the poor, eradicate poverty and enhance the well-being of the less-privileged in the society.

Quoting copiously the eight verse of the sixth chapter of Isaiah, he said members of the club had made themselves available towards reaching out to the poor; an assignment he said is quite taxing.

The District Governor, Mr Bolaji Onabadejo congratulated the mother of the president, Mrs Ojelabi for witnessing her son’s investiture, adding that some mothers were not opportune to celebrate with their children when they had attained some enviable heights.

Mr Onabadejo also spoke about development of the club, saying without recruitment of new members, no club would be able to receive a trophy.

He inducted Mr Bayo Oke as a new member of the club.

Highpoint of the event was an award of excellence presented to Mr Omatseye and other special guests by the new president.

  • Rotary International celebrates polio-free year

Rotary International has scored itself high for its contributions to ensure that the country is free of polio. Recently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) pronounced Nigeria one year free of polio virus and removed it from list of endemic nations.

At a briefing at the weekend in Lagos, the group’s Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee (NNPPC) Chairman, Dr Tunji Funsho, who described the feat as ‘’a milestone,’’ said it came about as result of many factors: its members’ contributions, donors and government’s cooperation.

He said since 1996, Rotary has spent $207million on the disease’s eradication, its partners $8billion, adding that worldwide, the organisation spent over $1.9billion.

He said while there were 12 cases in 2012, the figure came down to six in 2013 and last year, adding that since July 24, last year, there had been no case of the virus in the country.

He said the achievements would have been recorded much earlier if not for the insurgency and the apathy towards the polio immunisation programme in the North.

Funsho recalled that in 2000, in some states in the North, the immunisation programme was abandoned because some parents refused to cooperate with its officials, claiming that the drugs were anti-fertile.

He said it took the intervention of the government and Rotary to solve the problem.

But Funsho urged Nigerians not to rest on its oars to ensure that Nigeria is polio free by 2017 so that it can be given the certification status by WHO.

He called for intensified routine immunisation; ensure children in insecurity-prone areas were reached, timely response to any outbreak and fortification of Nigeria’s borders against the importation of the disease.

He called for more advocacy, funds, more awareness and volunteers.

“Polio remains our focus. Until it is eradicated, we will not leave it. We are not yet polio free. So, all hands must be on deck,’’ he said.

Rotary International District 9110 Governor  Bola Onabadejo also called more efforts to meet the 2017 target. He sought for peace in the conflict areas of the country to enable the immunisation officials reach them.

“We have two more years of hard work to ensure that Nigeria is out of polio,’’ he added.

Vice Chairman, NNPPC, Abayomi Adewunmi said Rotary was set to celebrate the World Polio Day on October 24. He said activities had been planned for a week to end on the Polio day.

  • New president for Rotary

    New president for Rotary

The Rotary Club of Gbagada has sworn in its new President, Otunba Olusola Adenuga-Taiwo, a retired banker and lawyer.

The event was historical in many ways–the celebrator’s father; the late Sir Gabriel Osiola Adenuga-Taiwo was a founding member and later President of Rotary Club while his mother Chief (Mrs) Arinola Adenuga-Taiwo, who attended the event, was a District Chairman, Inner Wheel of the old District 911. Adenuga-Taiwo recalled that Rotary was formed in his presence, though he did not join it then.

Besides, a Saturday before the event, the new President celebrated his 64th birthday.

White and green were the colours of the ceremony, which held at the Events Centre, near Afrika Shrine, Ikeja. While the men wore Agbada, which they topped with green caps, the women put on white buba (native wrapper) and crowned it with green head gears. But the President looked gorgeously different as he wore a multi-coloured aso-oke and a pair of glasses.

Chairman on the occasion, Dr Michael Olawale-Cole, who spoke on the vanity of man, noted the futility of life, saying the best legacy one can leave behind on earth is to serve God and humanity, adding that Rotary provides the platform for this service. He warned, quoting from the Bible, that no one takes anything from this world.

He, therefore, enjoined all to serve God with their possessions, saying that “this is what Rotary says is to share and give’’. He also quoted from the Koran to buttress his point.

Olawale-Cole, a former District Governor of Rotary, advised his colleagues “to be active and committed to Rotary. There is a great joy to be part of service, the challenges of the times, notwithstanding’’.

Rotary’s District 9110 Governor Otunba Bolaji Onabadejo also harped on service, saying it was ordained by God.

“Some defined serve as the rent you pay in life. It is putting everything you have at the service of people–talent and money, among other things. We are supposed to do serve. Since 1905, Rotary has been wiping some tears and eradicating diseases. Since 1985, Rotary has been fighting polio,’’ he said. He enjoined others to join the club and come “let us do service’’. He described the new President as world-class and, therefore, capable.

The outgoing President, Prof. Kayode Taiwo gave its team an excellent mark in performance. He listed these as the chartering of new clubs, induction of new members and renovation of the science laboratory of a school in Ago Iwoye in Ogun State. He canvassed support for his successor.

Adenuga-Taiwo, whose wife Olufunke attended the event, promised to execute the following projects–renovation of the Ajeroju Primary School in Oworonsoki, Lagos; continuation of its scholarship scheme in SOS Village, Isolo, Lagos; maternal and child care, water and sanitation scheme in Ibipe Community Health Centre at Ago Iwoye, poverty alleviation, micro-credit scheme and Rotary Foundation.  He later raised funds for the programmes.

At the event, Commissioner of Police, Airport Police Command, Mr Federick Taiwo Lakanu; Chief Charles Ike Uwechie and Sir Abuiodun Ogunkoya, retired management consultant, were honoured.
