    Members of the club expressed their delight about the new leadership and the positive influence they expected from him.

    In his speech, Ikechukwu said he would commit his wealth of knowledge and passion into community service.

    He said the implementation of major projects would be focus of his tenure.

    Rotary lifts orphanage home with cash

    Rotary Club of Ogudu GRA has donated funds to the Little Saints Orphanage in Ogudu, Lagos, to help support and improve the quality of life of its less-privileged children.

     President of the club, Akeem Shonde, said the club is on a mission to spread compassion and uplift the lives of the less privileged.

    By this gesture, he said, the club has again showcased its commitment to social welfare, and demonstrated the profound impact collective kindness can have on the community.

    “The N200,000 donation to the orphanage embodies the Rotary Club’s core principles of service and generosity. The funds are poised to be a beacon of hope for the children residing at Little Saints, providing them with essential resources that promise to improve their quality of life and nurture their dreams.

    “This act of benevolence goes beyond monetary value – it sends a powerful message that the Rotary Club of Ogudu GRA cares deeply about the well-being and future prospects of every member of the community,” he said.

     Shonde said the ripple effects of this gesture are bound to be profound, adding that the smiles it brings to the faces of the children at the orphanage are a testament to the club’s ability to make a difference, even in the face of challenges.

    By rallying around those who need support, he said the club nurtures a sense of community unity and shared responsibility.

    Lagos backs Rotary District 9110 on sports festival

    The Lagos State Government has thrown its weight behind Rotary International District 9110 Sports Festival (ROSFEST).

    The event that began at the weekend in Lagos is expected to end in March 2024.

    Speaking during the maiden edition of the event, the District Governor, Rita Ejezie, said, her District decided to introduce the festival to increase blood circulation, healthy living, mental health and increase in team work of all Rotarians.

    Ejezie, who also unveiled the logo for ROSFEST and the organising committee , added that the leadership of the District also observed that their members spend much time on others without  time to ease off.

    She named football, scramble, golf, volleyball, lawn tennis,  tug of war, draught, Ayo, table tennis, badminton and chess as the sports being competed for.

    Ejezie said the goals of the competition include fostering more cordial relationship and social cohesion amongst Rotarians and to improve the physical and mental well-being of her members, adding  ROSFEST will attract and extend rotary membership to non-Rotarian sports enthusiasts; create awareness and promote the rotary brand.

    The District Governor also said that the festival will help District 9110 sports teams for future and external competitions and to create entertainment, fun and relaxation for hardworking Rotarians.

    Chairman ROSFEST, Alozie Nsirimobi said that, the tournament, which is being modelled  after  inter-club sports, said the committee is collating the names of all registered participants according to clubs and sports chosen.

    He said that all registration, except the golf game, is planned to stop by November 15, 2023.

    The fixtures, according to him, would be published immediately after and the marched shall start off.

    Alozie revealed that the tournament will continue till February 2024, when expectedly, all games would have got their best six to compete for the first, second and third positions.

    According to him, March 8 and 9, 2024, slated for the grand finale and medals award, will hold at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.

    On partners and sponsors, Alozie said: “We are proud to mention that we have got some good and trustworthy partners and sponsors.

    “The Lagos State Sports Commission has graciously accepted to be our technical partners.”

    He added: “Some of our sponsors are offering free all-expenses paid trips and e-visas outside the country worth millions of naira, others offering plots of land in choice locations in Lagos and many more.”

    Rotary flags-off $.3m Family Health Days, targets 5,000 families

    Rotary International has flagged-off its Family Health Days, targeting more than 5,000 Nigerians.

    National Programme Coordinator, Rotary Family Health Days (RFHD) 2023, Mr. Bola Oyebade announced this.

    Oyebade, who revealed that the project would cost a little above $.3m, said RFHD was meant to help Nigerians improve their health status and wellness.

    “What we try to achieve is that people in different communities are able to know their health status.

    “We are spending as much as $300,000 on this project and we’re targeting about 5,000 thousand families.

    “During these days, we are having over 127 locations across the country, manned by experts, who will be available to conduct tests and screenings for various ailments and diseases for Nigerians free of charge.

    “The screenings will involve all forms of cancers, malaria, HIV, polio among others. 

    “We’ll give drugs and where we can refer where necessary.

    “We’ll also be distributing mosquito nets essentially to mothers, pregnant women, and women with infants. 

    “We’ll also be donating sanitary pads to younger ladies. These are what we’ll be doing all over Nigeria for the next three days starting from Tuesday.

    “All over Nigeria, we have more than 127 locations.  In Lagos and Ogun States, we have 66 locations.”

    He urged Nigerians to take advantage of the medical advice being made available during these days.

    According to Oyebade, where necessary, the body will refer for further consultation. 

    “As a matter of fact, we had over 200 cases that were referred to in the last edition we did and some of them have been receiving free treatment where Rotary has taken over their medical bills,” he stated.

    He thanked Bill and Melinda Gate alongside others sponsoring the project.

    He appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to join hands with Rotary in lifting many Nigerians out of complicated health issues.

    The District Governor, Ifeyinwa Rita Ejezie, said that this project would help many Nigerians having one health challenge or the other, adding that the group was ready to give the needed medical assistance.

    Prof. Olurotimi Coker, a psychiatrist and the guest lecturer, noted that stress was part of our lives, and advised Nigerians to develop techniques on stress management in order to avoid mental health disorders.

    He also lamented shortage of personnel in clinical, adding there was need for the government to reverse the trend of brain drain in the sector.

    ‘More Nigerians should join Rotary’

    More Nigerians have been advised to join Rotary to tap from the immense opportunities embedded in its programmes and projects.

     The President, Rotary Club of Onigbongbo, Rasak Babatunde Salau, stated this in an interview on the sidelines of its Super Thursday celebration at the Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

     He said Rotary makes an individual a responsible citizen as it hones one’s skill to make one better. More importantly, it makes one to channel their resources for the use of the less privileged in the society with its attendant self-satisfaction.

    The guest speaker Otunba Bola Onabadejo challenged the Rotarians to serious membership. He said it is not enough that Rotary International has a membership of 1.4million worldwide, adding that the more the merrier for the people.

    Onabadejo, a Past District 9110 Governor, who spoke on Paradigm shift in membership attraction, engagement and club development, gave the Onigbongbo RC members tips on successful membership drive. They are: attraction, engagement and club development, adding these are the tripod on which Rotary stands.

    Noting that membership development remains an important priority to Rotary, he said without it the body would not grow. However, the clubs need members who are active and are ready to serve the people.

     He spoke on how to retain new members, but against non-inclusion of them. “Appreciate that your members are precious and make meetings interesting and well-organised,’’ he added.

    At the event were Assistant Governor, Yinka Adeosun, past Assistant Governors Sola Benson and Yinka Adeogun and the club’s Secretary, Daniella Udenze, among others.

  • NGO, Rotary partner on maize provision

    A non-governmental Organisation  (NGO), Development Dynamics, is partnering Rotary Club to boost  dissemination of provitamin A maize planting seedto farmers to improve food security.

    Its Executive Director, Dr. Jude Ohanele, said his organisation was  seeking ways to improve the quality of life in rural areas.

    He said his organisation was using the small-scale agriculture model to alleviate hunger and fight poverty.

    Ohanele said the organisation embarked on the training of women farmers at Owalla Uratta, Owerri North Local Government Area of  Imo State.

    At the training, Ohanele said,  the organisation distributed free hybrid vitamin A maize seeds, sponsored by Rotary Club of Aladinma, Owerri to the farmers.

    He said the organisation trained  women farmers at Umuoma Nekede, Owerri West Local Government of Imo State. Similary,  the farmers also benefited from the distribution of free hybrid vitamin A maize seeds.

    Other trainings included one on good agronomic practices and distribution of free  hybrid vitamin A maize seeds at Umuowa, Orlu Local Government Area.

    He said, however, that the free seeds were sponsored by Chief Duru, a philanthropist.

    He said  using provitamin A maize   to tackle vitamin A deficiency is an excellent option because of  its availability and accessibility in most rural communities.

    According to him,biofortification of maize aims to amplify these efforts, taking vitamin A to people who may not be able to afford the cost of fortified foods.

    He said his organisation is working with HarvestPlus to  distribute  more nutritious crops that will enhance food security

    According to him, the rural households deserve better nutrition and the consumption of more nutritious crops to reduce malnutrition globally.

    He called on farmers to cultivate the varieties and consume them for better health and nutrition.

    He encouraged farmers to give seeds to their neighbours  during harvests to ensure rapid dissemination of planting materials.

    The farmers were trained on sustainable practices, accountability, sharing, passing on training, and self-reliance.

     

  • Rotary donates wheelchairs to cerebral palsy foundation

    Rotary District 9110, in collaboration with some clubs, has donated 21 wheelchairs to Benola Cerebral Palsy Initiative at the District Centre in Ikeja, Lagos. The clubs are Rotary Club of Victoria Garden City (VGC), Rotary Club of Ikoyi Metropolitan and Rotary Club of Accra East (District 9102), Ghana.

    District (9110) Governor Kola Sodipo said they embarked on the project to assist cerebral palsy patients to enable them move around. He said it is good to do good, especially to people who find themselves in difficult situations that they did not cause such as the cerebral palsy children and adults. He said by the donation, the children would be happy. “Let us continue to do good because the good we do will come back to us,’’ he added. He thanked Benola Cerebral Palsy Initiative and pledged his continuous support to it.

    Rotary Club of VGC President Victor Edomwande said the idea to embark on the project came about during his investiture and that it was aimed at touching the lives of the less privileged, who are physically challenged. It was the first time his club would execute such a project, he added. Each of the wheelchair cost between N55,000 and N100,000, he disclosed, adding that their target is to provide 1,000 wheelchairs. He thanked the partnering clubs for their support.

    Benola Cerebral Palsy Initiative founder, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Femi Gbadebo (retired), described the gesture as “a wonderful thing.” He said it was part of the vision of the group to take care of children and adults living with cerebral palsy and assist their parents on how to manage them. He noted that cerebral palsy is a condition that deserves special attention of all, urging drugs manufacturers, corporate organisations and the government to give those living with it due assistance.

    He said over 650,000 Nigerians live with cerebral palsy and that the wheelchairs were a drop in an ocean. At the moment, about 500 patients were on the queue, he said. However, with the advice of medics, they would be offered to those in need.

  • Rotary donates furniture to schools

    The Rotary Club of Lagos, Palmgrove Estate, has donated 50 desks and benches to Ilupeju Junior Secondary and Ilupeju Senior Secondary School.

    The handover held at the school premises in Ilupeju.

    President of the club,  Ravindra Kamat, said the donation of furniture to the schools was aimed at helping the pupils in advancing their knowledge, adding that education is important.

    He said: ‘’It is for this reason that my team has been supporting education and health in Palmgrove and Ilupeju vicinity.

    “It is like giving back to the society, that’s the core values of Rotary.

    “Not just anyhow people, but for those who are much in need. All our project are heading towards helping the under-privileged communities and we will keep ensuring they are the ones who benefit from our various projects.’’

    He continued: “Our focus is to assist needy people within the vicinity so that we make adequate provision and ensure continuous maintenance of our projects. As you can see the benches and desks are wooden and iron structure that cannot be damaged easily and if at all, in some years the benches get damage, it just the plywood.”

    Kamat, however, urged the teachers and pupils to ensure good maintenance of the furniture, so that other set of student can benefit from it in the coming years.

     

  • Rotary trains over 420

    No fewer than 420 youths participated in the 2018 edition of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), a yearly event organised by Rotary International, District 9110 Nigeria.

    The one-week programme with the theme: ‘Explore, engage, excel’, took place at the  Sea School in Apapa, Lagos.

    Speaking at the closeing ceremony yesterday, the District Governor, Rotorian Kola Sodipo, said.

    Efforts were on to improve on the programme content of the training in order to reinforce its goal of helping participant to discover their talents, develop their leadership skills and imbibe good citizenship culture.

    The Sea School Coordinator, Mr. Mustapha Oludare, the urged Youths not to forget that they are the future of this country.

    RYLA Committee Chairperson Ify Ejezie said it took passion, hard work, integrity, honesty and love for her and her team to get the 420 participants.

    Soetan Ibrahim, sponsored by Rotary Club of Gbagada South, is Mr RYLA 2018; Monalisa Ejezie, sponsored by Rotary Club of Ikoyi Metropolitan, is Miss RYLA 2018. Akinyemi Muhideen Akinsanmi, sponsored by Rotary Club Maryland, is the overall best participant.
