    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Rotimi Pedro from Lagos State as the new Director General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

    The President also confirmed the appointment of three other Executive Directors (EDs) to different departments in the organisation.

    The names of the appointees were displayed on the X handle of @the Presidency yesterday, ending several days of speculation on the changes at the national television station.

    In a post on its X handle, titled: “President Tinubu strengthens national broadcasting, appoints new NTA DG and EDs,” The Presidency announced that Karimah Bello from Katsina State was appointed as the new Executive Director, Marketing.

    Others are: Stella Din, from Plateau State, as the Executive Director, News.

    Sophia Mohammed from Adamawa State, representing the Northeast, was named as the Managing Director of NTA Enterprises Limited.

    The statement said the appointments, which take immediate effect, reaffirm the President’s commitment to strengthening national broadcasting as a platform for unity, cohesion, and soft diplomacy.

    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a major shake-up at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), replacing the management team with new leadership.

    “Veteran media executive Rotimi Richard Pedro has been appointed as the new Director-General of the state broadcaster.

    “Other key appointments include Katsina State’s Karimah Bello as Executive Director of Marketing, Stella Din from Plateau State as Executive Director of News, and Sophia Issa Mohammed from Adamawa State as Managing Director of NTA Enterprises Limited.

    “Pedro a Lagos native is an accomplished media entrepreneur and consultant with nearly three decades of leadership experience in broadcasting, sports rights, and marketing communications across Africa, the UK, and the Middle East,” the statement reads.

    A trained entertainment and intellectual property lawyer, he also holds an MSc in Investment Management & Finance from City University Business School, London. In 1995, he founded Optima Sports Management International (OSMI), which became one of Africa’s leading sports content providers, distributing premium events such as the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FIFA World Cup, and CAF competitions to audiences in more than 40 countries.

    His career includes leading roles at Bloomberg Television Africa, Rapid Blue Format, and consultancy work for FIFA, UEFA, Fremantle Media, and the African Union of Broadcasters. Notably, he helped the AUB secure exclusive pan-African free-to-air media rights for all CAF competitions.

    Industry analysts credit Pedro with building commercially viable broadcast platforms, boosting sponsorship revenues, and delivering world-class content to African audiences.

    His appointment marks one of the most significant leadership changes at NTA in recent years and signals the Federal Government’s intention to modernise the broadcaster and reposition it in an increasingly competitive media market.

    Pedro reaffirms commitment  for sports  development after claiming Sportsville award

    One of the winners in the Icon Category of the 2025 Shortsville Awards, Rotimi Pedro, has expressed huge delight over the honour bestowed on him.

    Pedro, who was decorated alongside others at the 5th edition of the Sportsville Special Recognition Awards which took place on April 3rd  at the Eko Club in Surulere, said he never saw the award coming at a time like this.

    “I have contributed my quota to the development of football and sports in general over the years,” he said. “In recent time, I still do my thing quietly to the best of my ability but never knew people are taking note. I am so happy and elated and want to thank the organisers of this award to keep it up. This is also a challenge for me to do much more for sports development in Nigeria.”

    The 5th  Sportsville Special Recognition Awards brought together top sports administrators, athletes, coaches and other key stakeholders in celebration of excellence and commitment to sports development in Nigeria.

    The annual awards’ ceremony recognized individuals who have made remarkable contributions to the sporting ecosystem, spanning administration, coaching, media, and grassroots development. These honourees, through their dedication and hard work, have shaped the industry, inspired younger generations, and contributed to the overall growth of sports in Nigeria.

    Others who were bestowed with award are foremost  retired referee Linus Mba; the energetic  General Manager of Rangers  International , Barr Amobi Ezeaku;  the immediate past Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Barr. Chris Green; the CEO of the Nigeria Premier Football League, Davidson Owumi as well as Kingsley Awodi, and Prince Paul Ngadiuba.

    There was also a posthumous awards for late industrialist  and foremost  supporter of table tennis, Chief  Molade Okoya –Thomas. The biggest award of the night, The Sports Administrator of the Year, was presented to Dr. Uyi Akpata, the President of the Nigerian Cricket Federation.
