    Why I left 50 Cent’s G-Unit record label – Rotimi

Afrobeats star Rotimi has opened up about the reasons behind his departure from American rapper 50 Cent’s G-Unit record label.

In an interview with Adesope Live, Rotimi cited creative differences as the primary reason for his exit, particularly over his Afrobeats style.

He explained that when he joined G-Unit in 2017/2018, Afrobeats had not yet achieved mainstream popularity in the Western music scene.

Rotimi recalled a conversation with 50 Cent about his sound, but the rapper and label head remained unconvinced.

“He didn’t fully understand my music style,” Rotimi shared, adding that the disconnect hindered his creative process.

Rotimi chose to leave the label to find a platform that aligned with his vision and could better support his Afrobeats journey.

He said: “I was signed to G-Unit, but then in 2017/2018, Afrobeats was not mainstream in the United States. Davido and Wizkid had records that were gaining traction in Boston, New York, but it wasn’t mainstream at that time.

“Afrobeats was big in the States, but they weren’t following it in LA. So, 50 Cent and I had a conversation. He was like, ‘What’s this sound you are trying to do?’ I said, ‘Bro, it’s Afrobeats.

“I have a record called ‘Love Rhythm’ and it’s going to blow up. But if you don’t understand what it is, then I have to go somewhere else.’ He let me out of my deal because we disagreed on the creative process, Afrobeats.”

He said he found a new home with Empire, becoming the first Afrobeats artist to collaborate with the label.

I brought Afrobeat to international stage – Rotimi

American-born Nigerian actor and singer, Olurotimi Akinosho, aka, Rotimi has claimed he brought Afrobeats to America.

Speaking in a recent interview, the American-born Nigerian star recounted how he contributed to the popularity of Afrobeats on the international stage.

He asserted he helped Wizkid open his first show in America in 2012, claiming that it led to the eventual acceptance of Afrobeats.

According to Rotimi, it was  Wizkid’s first time in America in 2012 and they met and he offered to help him with his 500-seater concert and they later got to talking in the hotel room.

Rotimi recalled telling Wizkid about his plans to be the biggest actor and artist in the world and Wizkid responded saying that he planned to take over the world.

His words: “Back in 2012 when Wizkid first came to America, they had found out about me musically because one of my songs had crossed over back home and this was before Afrobeats, Instagram and all that, I don’t know how they found it but when they got here they asked me to open up for Wizkid, it was his first time in America and they were doing 500-seaters, this was in 2012, to the point where I got off the plane and Wiz was like ‘hey bro let me help you with your bags’.

“It was really like we were on a mission and I’ll always love him for that because he knew what he was going to be. So we were doing 500-seaters, I performed in front of the crowd and the conversation we had then was like in 10 years, I want to be the best actor, best artist, best this and that and he was just like ‘I’m taking over the world bro’, that was his answer.”

He asserted that it took him five years to discover himself before he realized that he could be the bridge between RnB and Afrobeats, stating that that marked the beginning of his hit songs.

“I saw the wave in 2012, then after that I just started falling back into doing RnB. It took me five years to really find out who Rotimi was and remembering the conversation I had with Wizkid in 2012 and in 2017, that’s when it hit me like ‘bro just be you, you are the definition of African American so be the bridge of RnB and Afrobeats all in one’ and that’s when the hit records started happening,” he continued.

Rotimi proclaimed that he could proudly say that he brought Afrobeats to America.

He however acknowledged Drake’s role in making One Dance with Wizkid, stating that it was all about the sound and the right timing for it.

“I can comfortably say I brought Afrobeats to America, then One Dance with Drake and Wiz came out. I’m not saying it was because of me, no, but the timing, the sound… I can proudly say that I did that but it started with that conversation in the hotel room like bro let’s just be true to who we are. Like it’s okay to be African because growing up, the joke was like all of y’all are dirty,” he added.

Rotimi, Ogunbote differ on controversial goal

Rivers United goalkeeper, Sunday Rotimi insists Giwa FC’s second goal against Rivers United in Wednesday’s match day four Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) contest at the Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos should have been disallowed.

David Sunday (the goal scorer) appeared to kick the ball out of Rotimi’s hands and into the net in the 71st minute but referee, Henry Ogunyamodi insisted that the effort was legal and would stand much to the chagrin of the veteran goalkeeper.

“I was injured after the action because the ball was kicked out of my hands with great force. When I heard the referee’s whistle, I thought it was for a foul on the Giwa player but I was shocked that the referee awarded the goal. It is unfortunate but what can you do? We just have to move on,” he told the Rivers United Media.

Giwa FC trainer, Gbenga Ogunbote however shared a different view of the incident. He accepted that Rotimi was in possession of the ball just before the goal was scored but added that the Rivers United goal keeper tried to “circumvent the rules of the game”.

“There is somebody (the referee) that controls the game. If he had said it was a goal, then it is a goal. If he had also said it wasn’t a goal, nobody would have questioned him. But I know too well that the rules say your two hands (as a goalkeeper) must be with the ball.

“I think (Rotimi) was trying to prank the referee because he had just one hand on the ball. He was trying to circumvent the rules of the game. The referee was so close…he was just about four, five metres away from the scene and must have seen the right thing. I want to respect the judgement of the referee,” he said.

Wednesday’s win lifted Giwa FC to 14th on the league standings with four points from four games while United dropped four places and are now in seventh place with six points from their opening four games.
