NDDC opens 522 bed hostels in Rivers varsity

In furtherance of its determination to boost education in the Niger Delta region, the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, commissioned and handed over a 522 bed-space prototype hostel to the authorities of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, RSUST, Port Harcourt.

The event, which took place on Wednesday, came on the heels of the inauguration of similar hostels in 6 other universities across the region.

Speaking at the occasion, the NDDC Managing Director, Sir (Barr.) Bassey Dan-Abia, said that the ultra modern hostel, which would accommodate close to one thousand students, would raise the status of the university and provide the enabling environment for students to perform well in their studies.

He said that the relatively large number of students to be accommodated in the new hall of residence would contribute immensely to easing the overcrowding of existing hostels in the university.

The NDDC boss said that apart from ensuring that the hostel was fully furnished, the commission will also provide a new electricity generating set as requested by the university and said that it had raised the bar in the area of providing modern hostel facilities for universities and polytechnics in the Niger Delta.

Sir Dan-Abia declared that the current funding challenges facing the NDDC would not deter it from performing its function as an interventionist agency.

He said that out of the 19 student hostels being built by the NDDC across the Niger Delta region, only one was completed at the time the 4th governing Board of the Commission was inaugurated on December 16, 2013. “We are today commissioning the seventh hostel and 4 more would be ready soon. We have inaugurated similar hostels in Imo State University, Federal University of Science and Technology, Owerri, University of Benin, Delta State University, Abraka, University of Uyo Teaching Hospital and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike,” he said.

The Acting Vice Chancellor of the RUST, Prof. Blessing Didia, thanked the NDDC for coming to its rescue in alleviating the accommodation problems of the university.

He said: “The University has a student population of about 20,000 and only about two thousand students are accommodated on campus. You can, therefore, understand the joy of the university community for the great relief which this unprecedented Christmas gift by NDDC would bring to the university.”

Prof. Didia underlined the importance of student’s hostel accommodation in the university system and said that RUST had every reason to celebrate what he described as a wonderful gesture from the NDDC.

He said further: “Apart from providing the students with another home away from their homes, campus hostel accommodation guarantees a sense of security for the students. It also enhances healthy students’ relationship and encourages commitment and academic excellence.”

The Vice Chancellor said that the magnificent edifice handed over to the university by the NDDC went beyond the 3-floor 174-room structure, according to him; the complex houses other ancillary facilities such as a 20,000 gallons water works, cybercafé, shops and students lounge.

The Chairman of the Students’ Union Government, Mr. Wealth Gospel, said the students were grateful to the NDDC for giving them a state-of-the-art facility that would save them from the dangers and difficulties of living outside the campus. He promised that the students would take good care of the facilities.

  • At convocation, Amaechi, VC bid RSUST goodbye

At convocation, Amaechi, VC bid RSUST goodbye

The 27th Convocation of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt was unique in many ways.

It was a valedictory for the institution’s visitor, Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi; the Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof Barineme Fakae; the Governing Council headed by Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte (rtd), as well as the graduating students of the university.

The governor will leave office on May 29 while the VC and members of the Governing council will complete their tenures in June.

As is typical of valedictory sessions, most speakers on the convocation recalled how they ran the race that culminated to the parting of ways, paying tributes where necessary.

Amaechi recalled the rot he met in RSUST in 2007, when he became governor, which prompted him to confront a man he respected, the former Pro-Chancellor, Prof Godwin Tasie, on the road within the university and told him, “You are hereby sacked.”

The governor said that Fakae, who was the Rector of the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori, then reluctantly accepted the appointment to be the VC of the university.

But today, he is happy and proud that he took that radical decision to appoint Fakae as VC because he had lived up to the expectation of the marching order he gave him to “rescue the university”.

Amaechi revealed that though he was an indigent student, what radicalised him was that the University of Port Harcourt which he attended provided him with enough books and qualitative professors.

He recalled that then the students would protest against injustice in the society and lack of amenities in the university.

“At the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), we were out demonstrating against government.  Nobody will steal $10.8 billion and go free.  Nobody will steal $20 billion and go free.  Nigerian students will be found outside,” he said.

He added: “Today, Nigerian students have convoys like governors, driving and telling you, ‘this is my PA (Personal Assistant); this is my SA (Special Assistant)”.

The governor told the graduating students that if they appreciated the way the school had been turned around in these eight years, then on March 28, they should go out and vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari.

Fakae praised Amaechi for his  support to the university.

He listed several records of “firsts” that the RSUST had achieved – the first state-owned university on the webometric ranking table for four years.

The VC said that the university’s transformation encompassed the environment, academic content, academic programme and professional accreditations, aggressive use of ICT in learning and digitalisation of records as well as students and staff welfare.

He added that it had also won national and international recognition.

These, the VC pointed out, means that “the project of RSUST which came by your mandate is a mission accomplished, particularly now that the university has a direction.”

He urged the workers not to allow the university “to fall back into ruins of academic corruption, strikes, cultism and environmental degradation.”

  • SPDC’s N100m equipment for RSUST

Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has donated a complete and integrated set of marine hydrodynamic wave simulation equipment valued at over N100m to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST).

Performing the groundbreaking to house the equipment at the Nkpolu main campus of the university in Port Harcourt, the firm’s Sustainable Development and Community Relations General Manager, Nedo Osayande, said the donation was part of SPDC’s Corporate Social Responsibility to support teaching, research and learning in the Marine Engineering department.

He said the equipment is, by design, a multi-experiment facility capable of carrying out various simulations as regards to different offshore operations which include Model Towing Experiments, Self-Propulsion Experiments, Open Water Propeller Experiments, Ship Stability Experiments, Offshore Facility Experiments and Wake Experiments.

Nedo added that Shell’s donations would help create a synergy between the firm and beneficiaries.

He said: “Our Shell Professors and other 40 professors and post-graduate students recruited annually on 12-month sabbatical attachment and research internship, are equipped to help resolve some of our Exploration and production challenges.

“Our goal is always to focus on a single window of entry to optimize impacts and gains while widening our geographical spread across Nigerian universities. Ultimately, as already agreed, the aim is to transform the Department into a Centre of Excellence in Marine Engineering and Offshore Studies and make it a one-stop point in terms of developing industry-ready offshore technical personal in the West Africa region.”

Nedo recalled that the company has eight endowed Shell Professorial chairs in eight universities adding that Shell Nigeria will continue to support capacity development in the university, particularly through the Centre of Excellency concept that they have solicit for cooperation and support of all.

  • Kudos for Abe’s educational initiatives

    Kudos for Abe’s educational initiatives

Authorities of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Rivers State Polytechnic (RIVPOLY) and the National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) have hailed the lawmaker representing Rivers South East, Senator Magnus Abe.

They praised him for initiating educational support schemes for students in the senatorial district.

The Dean, Students’ Affairs, RSUST, Prof. Friday Segalo; Rector, RIVPOLY, Sir Obianko Worlu-Elechi and NURSS President, Comrade Mazi Lucky, spoke in their goodwill messages at the Third Abe’s Annual Fee Support for indigent final-year students,  at Bori, Khana Local Government.

He said: “Senator Abe is one of the best lawmakers  in this country. Students may not understand what he has done for them, but one thing is clear; what Abe has done will remain evergreen in our minds.”

Worlu-Elechi said although Rivers South East has had senators, Abe has demonstrated more commitment.

He added: “Senator Abe is doing well and we are following his activities . The lawmaker’s angle of human capital development is important. It will make the people become independent in future.”

  • Why some lecturers were sacked, by VC

Why some lecturers were sacked, by VC

The Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt, has explained the fate of the lecturers, who went on strike to protest the reappointment of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Barineme Fakae.

The university said it could not sacrifice academic excellence on the altar of blind unionism.

Fakae said the institution would not tolerate blind unionism aimed at causing confusion in the school.

The vice chancellor spoke in Port Harcourt yesterday ahead of the university’s 26th convocation on Saturday.

He said the lecturers were expected to pay allegiance to the university and not to a union.

A group of 20 lecturers issued a seven-day ultimatum to Governor Rotimi Amaechi to remove Fakae.

When the governor failed to comply, the lecturers later wrote a letter to withdrawal their services.

Fakee said it was clear the target of the lecturers, who were leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, was to cause confusion.

“We are not saying the union should not ask for something, but it should not be at the expense of the university and the students. Only the foolish parasite will kill the host. This is because it needs the host to survive.

“But some persons go on blind unionism to throw the system into chaos and score cheap point. That is what we disagree with.”

On the university’s convocation, the VC said 4,298 graduates would be awarded first degree. Three students got First-Class and 305 graduated with Second Class Upper degrees.

  • Woman threatens to report RSUST to EFCC over alleged fraud

A former postgraduate student of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Mrs. Ann Nwanbi Kaizer has called on the institution to release her Masters Degree result or face the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Mrs Kaizer said the university’s insistence that she must pay full tuition fees after she had been issued a clearance letter showing that she was not owing is fraudulent.

The teacher gave the university two weeks to release her result or face her wrath.

She noted that many other students told the same thing have paid the new fees because they are desperate to secure a new job with their results.

Mrs. Kaizer said: “I was admitted into the institution on 20th August, 2007 with Matriculation number PG.2006/SW/0006 for my M.Ed. degree programme in Business Education and I defended my thesis on 17th of September 2009 but I was denied of my result after being issued with the letter of clearance.

“The letter of clearance, indicated that I had paid my school fees up to date, photocopies of clearance letter is also available, I cannot go back to pay another full academic programme as requested as other people did with tears, but I will not shed tears for fees I have already paid.

“At the Bursary Unit, an Officer informed me that the Senate issued a directive that all those cases of outstanding results were required to pay school fees up to the current year amounting to N514, 500.

“In my case, the current Head of my Department informed me that though my result had been prepared at the Department, it cannot be presented to the Senate unless I pay the new added fees.”

When contacted, the University through the Public Relation Officer, Mr Desmond Wosu, said there is no way somebody would paid his or her school fees and the university would demand for another fees.

“It is not in our character; the results are being computerised and made easy for collection for those who do not owe the institution. We are not fraudulent,” he said.

  • Amaechi challenges RSUST on research

To ensure that the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt attains the vision of its founding fathers regarding scientific breakthroughs, Governor Chibuike Amaechi has challenged the lecturers to embark on research projects.

Amaechi who gave the charge at the 25th convocation for the 2011/2012 graduates of the first state-owned university also noted that the growth, development and quality of universities are measured by the quality of their research output.

To this end, he counselled the university to vote funds for research and training to bridge the gap.

He also advised the authorities of the school to scout and recruit the best lecturers, promising, that his administration would pay their remunerations.

The Governor promised the university full financial autonomy, observing that the essence of training and retraining of its staff will enable them cope with the dynamics of academic challenges.

He, however, decried a situation where lecturers turn themselves into businessmen and warned them against using official working hours to attend to their private businesses.

“You cannot be a lecturer and also a businessman. The business of lecturing is the business of studying and there is no time any lecturer will stop studying. I think that the university must vote funds for research and training. It is not enough that we are building hostels, offices and classrooms without promoting training.”

He also disclosed that his administration has concluded arrangements to commence the construction of the new RSUST at the Greater Port Harcourt City this year.

“We have finished with the due process and we will start building the infrastructures and various faculties of the university,” he said.

In his welcome address, titled On a Steady Growth, the RSUST Vice- Chancellor, Prof Barineme Fakae said 5,453 graduands were awarded first degrees, post graduate diplomas, masters and doctorate degrees.

Fakae urged the graduands to see their convocation as the beginning of a turning point in their personal lives.

The VC recalled how the university suffered unwarranted image battering by some unpatriotic elements stating the university has taken a resolve that strike is no more an option in any struggle for better service conditions as it has negative impact on the future.

Fakae noted that cultism has been reduced to the barest minimum, resulting to a peaceful and serene atmosphere in the school.

“Students write their examinations now under the supervision of lecturers and not military operatives as was the era of campus cultism. RSUST is one of the best universities in the world today”, he declared.

In his speech, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the 10th Governing Council of the university, Hon. Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte (rtd) thanked the governor for the strong support he has given to the school, noting that a high level of discipline and dedication to studies have been imbibed by the graduands.

Out of the total number of 5453 graduands who convoked, 19 obtained PhDs, 273 masters degrees and 86 post graduate diplomas.

Highlights of the occasion included offer of prices to outstanding students, especially to the overall best student, Mr Okonkwo Chinedu Onochie of the department of Petro- Chemical Engineering who won five prizes.

  • NGO seeks suspension of RSUST accreditation

A Non-Governmental Organisation – Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), has criticised the on-going accreditation tour of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Nkpolu by officials of Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC).

A statement issued in Port Harcourt, by Livingstone Wechie, the CLO Director, Research and Publicity, Rivers State branch, called for the discontinuation of the tour immediately pending the resolution of the on-going strike by lecturers of RSUST.

Since July last year, some members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), embarked on an indefinite strike to protest the re-appointment of Prof Barineme B.Fakae as Vice Chancellor (VC) by the state government.

They alleged that the VC’s re-instatement did not follow due process, and insisted that he be removed.

Wechie said the move by NUC to accredit courses of an institution that is neck-deep in crisis suggests their supports for the on-going problems in the school.

He said, “We are accusing NUC of complicity in the crisis in Rivers State University of Science & Technology Port Harcourt.

“NUC is aware of the crisis rocking RSUST and yet it went ahead to begin a process to accredit courses and programmes of the university, whose Lecturers are on strike.

“the Minister of Education Prof. Rukayyatu Rufai had in a statement this year said that until the Law is followed and the questions and concerns raised in the appointment of the VC resolved, NUC will not accredit the courses in that institution.” he recalled
