  • Group partners RTEAN on park infrastructure

A socio-cultural group, the Golden Club of Ilawe-Ekiti, has partnered the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) to provide park infrastructure at Ilawe Motor Park, in Ekiti Southwest Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

Speaking during the sod turning  of the project designed to mark the silver jubilee anniversary of the club, its President, Mr Kolawole Dauda Olufemi, said the project was aimed at bringing succour to travellers that make use of the park. It is also designed to help develop the community.

He said: “We are grateful to God for the opportunity He has given to the members of the club to be alive to mark this 25 years anniversary. Our silver jubilee anniversary celebration seemed to have altered the saying that 20 children cannot play together for 20 years. For us, we have played together, lived together and passed through the thorns of life unscathed. Those who defected from the club are all still alive and kicking. We are indeed grateful to God.”

He continued: “This project will cost the club hundreds of thousands of naira. We are raising the money from within our individual members. What we have done today is just the sod turning ceremony to herald the project proper. We hope to complete the project first quarter of this year and it will be commissioned by the Alawe of Ilawe, Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi.”

RETAN’s General Chairman, Idowu Omotehinse, praised the club for the initiative, adding that it is unique because the club had deemed it fitting to give back to their community.

He said RETAN would continue to support every initiative aimed at bringing development to the community.

“We are excited at this gesture. It is not about the total cost of the project but the vision behind it. For so long, the drivers and passengers have suffered, standing under the elements (sun and rain)  waiting for buses each time they are traveling. When it rains, there is no shelter for them, same thing happens when there sun. So, for us, this something commendable,” he said.

Branch Chairman of RETAN, Tunde Omoboriowo, also praised the club for what he described as ‘their thoughtfulness,’ adding that it is the harbinger of good things to come.

He said: “We are highly indebted to the club. It is significant to us in the community. We are hopeful that one day, this club will donate buses to us to boost transportation and ease the problems associated with it in the state. We are glad and pray to God to give the group the strength to carry on.”

    •Police summon seven

The police in Ondo town, Ondo State, have invited seven members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and their counterparts from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), following a clash between the two unions.

Two members, including the RTEAN Chairman, Okada branch, Lipakala unit,  Amadu Jamiu, were injured, in the clash which was said to have occurred at Lipakala junction.

Jamiu, who spoke with reporters at the emergency ward of the State Specialist hospital, alleged that the attackers, suspected NURTW members, were led by Abdulahi Olawale.

The victim alleged that the attackers stormed the loading park in the area to unleash mayhem on them.

He traced the source of the conflict to  the decision to move from NURTW to RTEAN.

“We were members of the NURTW, but we decided to move to RTEAN. We wrote a later to them and accompanied it with an affidavit to support our claims. Since then, they have been threatening us.”

The RTEAN Chairman in Ondo town, Sebeeni Obadun, described the attack as unfortunate. A NURTW chieftain, Henry Ajetomobi, described all allegations levelled against his members as untrue

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Olu-Ojo Ogunmoyole, confirmed the report. He said members of the two unions were invited for questioning.

    Caretaker committee for Ogun RTEAN

The national body of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has dissolved the Ogun State executive council headed by Mugisu Akinpelu.

The National Secretary, Yusuf Adeniyi, said a 16 -member caretaker committee headed by Yinka Osikoya and Odus Nureni (Secretary) would run the affairs of the council for six months.

In a letter to the committee chairman, Adeniyi urged all RTEAN members to abide by the arrangement.

  • Ex-RTEAN chief: my life under threat

Former Chairman, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Chief Rotimi Olanbiwonninu (aka Mentilo), raised the alarm yesterday that his life was being threatened.

Olanbiwonninu, in an interview with The Nation in his hideout, said he knew nothing about the death of Chief Omolafe Aderiye (aka Lafeade), who was killed last Thursday.

“It was the belief that I had a hand in his (Omolafe’s) killing that made them destroy my house and burn down my vehicles.

“If I lost all I have worked for all my life, I don’t want to lose my life. I have nothing to do with Omolafe’s killing,” he said.

Appealing to the government and the police to come to his rescue, the RTEAN leader maintained that it was his perceived closeness to the state government, which fuelled such belief.

“I have to be close to any government of the day. That is the constitutional thing for me to do, owing to my past position,” he said.

Mentilo, who explained that he travelled to Abuja two days before the assassination of Aderiye, said: “I was his close friend, although we belonged to different transportation unions. We don’t even have any business dealings together”.

On how his property and personal belongings were destroyed, Olanbiwonninu said: “They called to inform me my house was being destroyed and my vehicles were on fire. In all, they destroyed 11 vehicles. I was not around to salvage even a pin from the house.

“All I have worked and laboured for in my life were gone. Now, I have continued to receive threats from factions of the transporters that they were still coming for me and that I should be writing my will.

“Why they are threatening to kill me, I don’t know. They have been sending me threat messages that they are coming for me. I have no hand in the death of Omolafe. Ekiti State, the Nigeria Police and all well-meaning Nigerians should come to my rescue.”

  • Unions back emission policy

    Unions back emission policy

THE Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and auto techicians have bought into the Federal Government’s national vehicle emission reduction policy.

They have also resolved to work together for the success of the policy which enforcement begins in January.

The policy, which is meant to improve the quality of vehicles and the life of Nigerians, will be enforced by the National Environmental Standard and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).

Under the policy, all vehicles must be installed with emission reduction technology.

At a meeting in Abuja, RTEAN and the Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association (NATA) said their partnership would strengthen the government’s efforts at ensuring the growth of the automotive industry.

RTEAN’s National President Alhaji Shehu Musa Isiwele, while receiving his NATA counterpart  Comrade Michael Ajayi Omonayin in his office in Abuja, said the partnership would enhance the industry’s contribution to the transportation sub-sector of the economy.

The cooperation, Isiwele noted, would also help the government in creating an enabling environment for the manufacturing of vehicles and spare parts in the country.

He said: “The success of road transport business rests on the professional competence of your members and quality of services provided as auto-engineers which is central to vehicle maintenance.”

Isiwele said with 16 million members nationwide, RTEAN has a robust spread that is capable of delivering an efficient road transportation business.

“More than any other association, either in the public or private sector, RTEAN has promoted issues of affordable, quality, durable and sustainable road transport system.

“Today, it is not surprising that the association is adjudged as the best trade union in Nigeria  in the recent performance rating of trade unions in Nigeria,” he said.

Isiwele praised  President Goodluck Jonathan for the automotive policy and the improvement in road network across the country. “This improved road network has improved road transportation and reduced accidents and fatalities,” he said.

Omonayin said NATA sought RTEAN’s partnership on the automotive industry to further promote stakeholders’ dialogue with a view to promote overall public benefit.

NATA, he said, is training its members in the repair and maintenance of automatic and electronic vehicles that would be replacing the old engines in line with the envisaged success of the auto policy.

RTEAN partners NATA on survival, growth of automotive industry

The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, in partnership with Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association, NATA, have agreed to support the federal government in ensuring the survival and growth of the nation’s automotive industry.

The national president, RTEAN, Alhaji Shehu Musa Isiwele, assured that such partnership will enhance the industry’s contribution to the national economy, especially in the area of transportation.

Isiwele disclosed this during a visit by delegates of NATA in Abuja, stating that this would not only add value to both organisations, but also help the government in creating enabling environment for the manufacturing of local vehicles and spare parts in the country.

He said, “RTEAN and NATA would through the partnership ease the pains of Nigerians in transporting their goods and services, especially now that the federal government has launched the national automotive policy aimed at making the nation self reliant in the manufacturing of Nigerian-made vehicles.

“The success of road transport business is hinged on the availability of professional skills of your members and the services provided as auto-engineers which is cardinal to maintaining vehicles on the road.

“RTEAN’s robust nature and national spread with over 16million membership across the country stand us out as a viable and dependable destination fodder investments in road transportation business in Nigeria.

“More than any other association, either in the public or private sphere of our socio-political and economic development, RTEAN has promoted issues of affordable, quality, durable and sustainable road transport system.

“Today, it is not surprising that the association is adjudged as the Best Trade Union in Nigeria in the recent performance rating of trade unions in Nigeria,” he stressed.

The RTEAN boss, however, commended President Jonathan for the automotive policy and the improvement in road network across the country, saying improvement on national highways had improved road transportation and reduced accidents in the country.

Speaking, NATA president, Michael Ajayi Omoniyi, said the association sought partnership with RTEAN on National Strategic Stakeholders Dialogue on Nigeria Automotive Industry to support the policy for the benefit of both sand the general public.

Adding that the partnership would enhance the implementation of National Vehicle Emissions Control programme scheduled to begin in January 2015 by the National Environmental Standard and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA, across the country.

The programme is to ensure that all vehicles plying Nigerian roads have installed emission reduction technology, adding that it would also improve the quality of vehicles and life of Nigerians.

He disclosed that NATA had started to train its members in the repair and maintenance of auto-mechanic and electronic vehicles that would be plying the nation’s roads.

  • Transport body to launch own BRT

Transport body to launch own BRT

The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) will launch its first Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system in Abuja, Lagos, Edo, Anambra and Enugu states next month, its president, Musa Isiwele, said yesterday.TR

He said the union had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PAN Nigeria Limited in other to float the made-in-Nigeria vehicles next month.

Isiwele spoke in Abuja when a group, the Aberuagba Fans Club, visited him.

He said: “After signing the agreement between RTEAN and Nigerian Pan, possibly on September 1, we are going to release the first batch of vehicles to bring the price of transportation down in Nigeria.

“We shall introduce BRT lines in Abuja, Lagos, Anambra, Edo and Enugu in the first batch. Our partners will bring the vehicles. We are trying to help our members, while providing job opportunities for Nigerians. We are going to be the off-taker of made-in-Nigeria vehicles.”

The group’s National Chairman, Oladipo Musibau, said it would work to promote the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan for him to complete his Transformation Agenda.

  • When terror strikes

    When terror strikes

As had been feared, Boko Haram was behind last week terror attack at Nyanya Motor Park in Abuja killing no fewer than 75 with many more wounded. The terror group confirmed this in a 25 minutes video message at the weekend by its leader Abubakar Shekau with a further threat of more attacks in the nation’s capital.

The readiness or lack of it of our security agencies to confront the growing trend of insurgency and most importantly, terrorism in the country and the tardy nature of the political response to this threat to Nigeria’s unity and her territorial integrity are beginning to cause concern among the rest of the populace.

While the bereaved in the Nyanya attack bury their dead and scores of school girls abducted in Borno State by the terrorists are being held captives, most probably as sex slaves in the forest, our political leaders have been busy passing the buck with the leadership of the two main parties engaged in blame game. What a shame!

Meanwhile the security agencies have been trying without success to convince us that they are doing their best to contain the terrible situation. We wish them luck.

In the last couple of weeks the politicians have behaved most irresponsibly in their response to the Boko Haram attacks. Playing politics with the lives and security of Nigerians is a betrayal of trust and utterly condemnable. I do not know what the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) stand to gain from the verbal assault on each other’s position on this national crisis.

Most irresponsible was the claim by Olisa Metuh, spokesman for PDP that the opposition, meaning APC knows a thing or two about what Boko Haram is doing and most probably in support. Equally annoying is the seeming grandstanding of the APC on the matter at hand. Both parties seem not to understand the enormity of the security challenge facing the nation and are looking for avenues to make cheap political gains from the deplorable security situation in the cautery, particularly in the north east region, all in readiness for the 2015 elections.

Yes, it is in the nature of political parties to try to maximize every opportunity to their political advantage but as it is done elsewhere in well established democracies, when national interest is at stake, all the parties rally round and queue behind the Commander-In-Chief. It is in the light of this that the decision of the leadership of the APC to postpone its states’ congress to enable its governors attend a meeting called by President Goodluck Jonathan on the security situation in the country is commendable. But the party must do more than this. It must not only proffer or suggest credible solutions to the crisis, it must show its commitment to it and also rally its governors, especially in the north to bond together and fight this terror.

To whom much is given, much is expected. The Commander-In-Chief to borrow the words of former Information Minister Professor Jerry Gana must also chiefly command well. If everybody is behind you then you must lead from the front, lead well and responsibly too. Dancing ‘Owambe’ in Ibadan and cutting birthday cake (no matter whose birthday it was) while the Nyanya attack was still fresh (following day) and frolicking away while our girls are still held captive by terrorists in the forest is to say the least irresponsible of President Jonathan. No apologies here. It would also be good if some of our state governors and also presidential spokesmen guard their utterances in the course of this crisis because we are in a delicate period that calls for sober reflection and all hands being put on deck.

Now that all our political leaders from both sides seem to have come to their senses, it is hoped that the President’s meeting with the state governors would be fruitful and chart a way out of this Boko Haram problem and restore peace and security to the north east and all other trouble spots in the country. One meeting certainly cannot achieve this but a good beginning will send the right signal to the terrorists that our leaders are ready and serious to confront them. There have been instances of the federal government hampering the efforts of some states to combat insecurity in the area, just for political gains, especially in states not controlled by the PDP. And not surprisingly, most of the states in the north east are not. The president must behave and act presidential in the interest of Nigeria, no room for sentiments. As the Yoruba would say, the name of the king during whose reign the town was peaceful would never be forgotten or erased, same for the king under whose reign there was chaos. A word is enough for the wise.

Much has been said and written on this page about what the security agencies have done or failed to do in arresting the security situation in the country that it might be pointless repeating them again. But the point has to be made that Nigerians are not happy with them and they should rise up to expectation. Whatever has to be done must be done to defeat terror, defeat Boko Haram, drive the terrorists out of our country and restore peace and security to the north east and other areas under threat of terrorism and, most importantly, restore the trust Nigerians have in one another to leave anywhere in the country peacefully.

But then security is not the business of the security agencies alone, we are all involved. It would be foolish of a man to leave his doors or gates open and go to sleep just because there is a police patrol around. Security of lives and properties starts from the home. Not just locking the gates and doors but also being security conscious and instilling the right security consciousness in our kids. At work, school, play and anywhere there is or going to be a large gathering, security measures must be put in place by those concerned to protect lives and properties.

In the aftermath of the Nyanya bombing, I had a lengthy telephone discussion with someone who claim to be a member of one of the security agencies and he was quite disturbed at the amount of criticism directed at the security agents for their inability to bring Boko Haram and similar organisations to their knees. He claimed that they are doing a lot to arrest the situation and urged Nigerians to be patient both with the government and the security agencies. There is no debating the fact that they are doing a lot, but whether they are doing enough is where the debate is. Be that as it may, suffice to say that you cannot fight a 21st century problem using a 20th century method, it won’t work.  To defeat terror in Nigeria, we must outgun, outspend, outsmart, outmaneuver, (out whatever) and overwhelm Boko Haram and their sponsors with all our military might. No amount spent would be too much if at the end of the day Boko Haram is routed and Nigeria gets back to business.

The guy from the security service said operators of Motor Parks, including the leadership of the various transport workers unions should share in the blame of this seeming lack of security at the bus stations.

“What are those union leaders doing at the Parks”, he queried. “ They just sit there collecting money, drinking beer and ‘carrying’ women without any consideration for the security of not just their members but also the traveling populace. Instead of organising themselves and providing security at the Parks, all they do is to ‘enjoy’ themselves. Not even basic security measures are put in place. You find all manner of people at the Motor Parks. Can anybody just go to the airport anyhow?”

He went on and on and on and I could see he was very angry. I share some of his sentiments and concerns and believe that these transport sector unions, the likes of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) et al need to organise themselves better, they need to be security conscious and re-orientate their members accordingly. The traveling public and indeed the general public need to key in to this project as well.

The business of security is everybody’s business. Nobody is immune to terror strike. When the terrorists strike, all of us are touched one way or another. May GOD safe Nigeria and deliver us from BOKO HARAM.

Did I hear someone shout Allelujah there?

  • RTEAN supports FG’s automotive policy

    RTEAN supports FG’s automotive policy

The National Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has expressed support for the automotive development plan of the Federal Government.

National President of the association, Chief Musa Isewele, told newsmen in Abuja on Thursday that the policy would boost employment and the manufacturing sector of the economy.

“We support the automotive policy because it will bring development and increase our revenue generation.

“If you buy a new vehicle, you don’t need to buy spare parts often or visit the mechanics over little problems.

“So, it is to our own advantage as a union and we encourage the government to ensure that the policy comes to life.”

Isewele however urged government to consider some waivers to enable Nigerians to bring in vehicles with ease until the policy became effective.

Commenting on some of his achievements since assuming office, the union boss said that RTEAN had created numerous job opportunities for graduate youths since he assumed office.

He said that no fewer than 24 graduates were employed by the union at its National Secretariat.

“When we came on board, we said we are coming to make a change; we said we will work hard to put food on the table for our members.”

Isewele said the union was a peace loving group and not about “cutlasses and machetes”.

“We embarked on an aggressive corporate image marketing of RTEAN and enforcement of discipline to give a new orientation to all our members nationwide.

“Our parks are not about thuggery and that we have been able to prove.

“Infact, any of our members who consume or even smell of alcohol will not be allowed to drive.

“If such a driver’s vehicle is already being loaded with passengers, the passengers will be discharged to another vehicle and that is a very serious offence.

“We have already launched the RTEAN Mass Transit Scheme and its really effective.”

Isewele said that the union was setting up a drivers’ academy to train drivers and had concluded arrangements to begin construction of a 1,000 houses for its members in Abuja.

He said that the union had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a foreign investor to provide high capacity buses nationwide.

He added that investors would, however, have to set up a vehicle assembly plant in the country in line with Federal Government’s auto policy.

He also said that the union had begun data capture of all its 16 million members across the federation.

On the allegation of existing factions in the union, Isewele denied it.

The RTEAN boss said that the case was already in court.

He urged members of the union to remain law abiding and ignore any provocative statements from anyone.

  • Drivers at war in Ekiti as RTEAN members battle to remove leader

Drivers at war in Ekiti as RTEAN members battle to remove leader

Muted discontents among members of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) in Ekiti State against perceived high-handedness of its leader, Mr. Rotimi Olanbiwonninu, has degenerated into a free-for-all in which dangerous objects were used by rival factions to prosecute a supremacy battle. The leadership has stepped down as a national Fact Finding Committee fills the space in the interim, writes Sulaiman Salawudeen

Penultimate Friday in Ado-Ekiti, capital of the State, was unlike most other days as residents tasted the bitter pill of unrest and fear arising mainly from violent opposition of some members of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) to the leadership of the Association led by its Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Olanbiwonninu (aka Mentilo).

Although the day started on a peaceful note, it did not however end well within the association as some members mounted road blocks and made bonfires at strategic locations including Old Garage, Okeyinmi, Ojumose,, Ijigbo and Ajilosun Roads. in Ado Ekiti, the state capital to voice their grievance against what they variously described as ‘highhandedness’ and ‘iron fist’ rule of the State Chairman.

They divided themselves into groups, armed with dangerous weapons and drove their vehicles at dangerous speeds, visiting the motor parks to forcibly dislodge members seen as loyal to Olanbiwonninu.

Shops and businesses were forced into an early closure while pedestrian and vehicular movements also ceased prematurely, especially around Old Garrage and Ijigbo-Ajilosun areas,  as cries of agony from t5he injured  proceeded intermittently from the motor parks to sully what remained of the evening.

Thick, black smoke rose into and hung heavy in the air as bellows of fire wailed from burning tyres at several spots around the axis of mayhem, while largely faceless daredevils brandished fearful weapons to corral perceived opposition into vacating the motor parks, the control and administration of which, according to findings, had been at the roots of the problem.

The aggrieved parties which comprised the State Secretary, Comrade Sesan Ogunlade; Deputy Chairman, Mr. Sunday Adeola; Chapel Chairman, Olokemeji, Mr.  Ajayi Kayode; Chapel Chairman, Ureje, Adeniyi Adebayo (aka Ojuigo); Prince Adewale Abiodun Fagbewesa; Fadairo Akinwale and a minimum of twenty six other chapel chairmen were united by a mission to dislodge Mentilo and “restore a regime of peace and mutual progress to the 17-year-old Union”, insisting that the 8-year reign of the State Chairman must end.

In consequence, Policemen and later men of the Nigeria Army were drafted to mount guards at several spots to curb further escalation of unrest. The police at a point were forced to fire tear gas shots into the rampaging horde of disgruntled park touts, making residents, especially those staying around Okeyinmi, Ojumose, Ijigbo and Ajilosun areas shed tears right inside their homes and business centres.

Soon as the tear gas dissipated, the surging soldiers of opposition to the beleaguered Mentilo, who wore fearful looks, returned to the scenes to maintain the glow of unrest. They kept daring the opposition to come out and challenge them and even the police, pacing up and down. At a point, about four separate detachments of policemen failed in the attempt to rein in the throbbing horde.

By the time the dust settled after six consecutive days of unrest and uncertainty, no fewer than five members comprising mainly those loyal to the troubled Chairman and two police officers, had been taken to the hospitals for treatment, but no life, as findings revealed, was lost.

The intervention of National Executive Council

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Association intervened by sending down a five-member Fact finding Committee to take over affairs of the association in the State as the current leadership led by Rotimi Olanbiwonninu was asked to step aside from the office to enable the Committee investigate the causes and make recommendations to NEC.

Earlier, the National President, Alhaji Shehu Musa Isiwele had held a meeting with the factions attended by the State Chairman, Olanbiwonninu and the Secretary, Com. Ogunlade after which they were directed to allow the Chairman to serve out his term, a recommendation which was rejected and which immediately caused hiccups.

Just before this meeting, there had been an earlier one held with the groups attended by the National President in which the State Governor Kayode Fayemi denied ever giving Olanbiwonninu N100 million which he was alleged of having mismanaged and which was believed primarily responsible for the problem. Neither of the meetings could bring the situation under control.

The Committee led by Comrade Philip Nwaigbo from Imo State as chairman, has other members which included Alhaji Lahan Yusuf, Secretary (Kwara), Alhaji Ayinde Rumokun (Lagos) Alhaji Rasak Durojaye (Ogun) and Comrade Adewale Ojo (Ondo).

The Nwaigbo Committee is expected to complete its assignment by January 19 and return to the national secretariat of the association with a report on the findings.

Meanwhile, as at last weekend, the whereabouts of the embattled Chairman, were unknown and efforts to trace it proved fruitless.

While some believed he was arrested by the Force Headquartres in Abuja, others said it was the Directorate of State Security (DSS). Even the Police in the State could offer no assistance in this regard.

    Allegations against Mentilo

Allegations against the administration of the beleaguered Olanb-iwonninu included high-handedness and arrogating too much powers. Others, according to a list of 30 misconducts contained in a letter forwarded by the aggrieved members to NEC, included converting in various ways the Association’s property into his own; victimisation and use of divide and rule method to foist trouble within the Association; selling of ‘priority’ to his wife, girlfriends and cronies and physical and routine brutalisation of chapel chairmen and ranking members of the Association.

Noting that a sum of a hundred million given to the Association by the State government had equally vanished, they explained the Chairman had also sacked some elected members of the Association on spurious accusations of being opposed to his administration while a sum of N250,000 contributed by members as support for an ailing  member of the association who was on admission at the State Teaching hospital was equally denied him. But, both the State Governor and the National President have denied that Olanbiwonninu collected any such amount.

The National President had said: “It is the leaders of the union that are causing the fight. We will take care of that and as soon as I leave this place, I will see the Commissioner of Police and I will decide the matter before I leave this State”, he said.

One of the aggrieved members spoke: “For about one year now, he had sacked some old members from participating in all activities and had appointed his own family members to replace those ones. You too can confirm all I am saying as a journalist.

“While doing all these, he goes about accusing those he has been punishing as belonging to rival political camps to curry the favour of the current administration and sustain his punishment on his supposed enemies”, he said.

How did things get so worse?

More facts have however emerged concerning the reasons members of the Association were up in arms against Olanbiwonninu. A member named Adeniyi Adebayo (aka Ojuigo), said: “The State Chairman has a long history of abuse of the privileges of his position. So many members have one terrible history or the other to tell about him”.

Adeniyi, Chapel Chairman, Ureje park, Ado-Ekiti who disclosed he had been placed on suspension through a letter from the Chairman, recalled that since he assumed leadership of the park, he (the chairman) had denied him all the privileges of the position. Said he:”He did not allow me to carry priority. Priority means you are given priority to load passengers at the park anytime irrespective of whether it was your turn or not. Once you are in the park, the turn is automatically your own.

“But as the chairman, I have the privilege of priority in six units, including Akure, Ikere, Benin, Ondo-Ore, Akungba and Ise. Mentilo sold the six priorities to those he wanted. As the state chairman, Mentilo should not sell priority to members of the union because when he does that he removes every respect you have as Chapel chairman and this is exactly what he does to me and many of our members.

“Again, given the size of the state, he has access to only five vehicles. But our Chairman has 13 buses which are engaged in priority all over the garages; which means no chapel chairman has priority. Wherever he did not have a bus, he would sell the priority to a member of that Garage and collect N9000. In Ado-Ekiti alone, he has 13 buses and has sold 6 priorities. His child and wife have priorities.

“You may wish to know how I got the fresh wounds on my body and my face. He was in Abuja last Friday for an event and called Alhaji Kuraku, Akin Falae, Ojo Ghana, Kasali KSK and Olu Ofunoye who are ranking members of Mentilo Vanguard to come and beat me up. I was then in front of Wema Bank. They all came to ask me where I got the letter I took to Emure and Ise to sign with chapel chairmen, I asked them what letter. They were referring to the letter that thirty chapel chairmen signed and forwarded to the headquartres. I was not among those selected to sign but they never allowed me to defend myself.

“While it is true that someone was carrying his impeachment letter about which was the chairman of Ise, Mathew Arogundade, I am not Arogundade. He most possibly would have known this but, because of his longstanding hatred for me, he said they should include my name among those who wanted to get him out. They applied physical beating and cutlasses on me.

“It was that day that all the Chairmen generally, numbering 38, decided that it was time for him to go. In all this, Mentilo Vanguard has been responsible. The vanguard is the hit squad,” Adeniyi said.

Prince Adewale Abiodun Fagbewesa’s experience was however farther into time. In his account, Fagbewesa explained that on a Saturday in 2006, he had an accident on a commercial motorcycle while returning home after work at Ijigbo and he was taken to the hospital, adding that on Monday, he returned to the park at Ajibade lane with his car and sat down.

“When they saw me after I came down from my car, Mazda 323, they brought a chair for me and I sat down and around 9 in the morning Mentilo came to the park and people greeted him bending their whole body.

“I could not do this as I was not even comfortable on the seat. I felt like returning home. When he moved closer to my seat, I could only gesture slightly although respectfully as I was not well. He approached me and I bowed very well on my seat again. He queried that why did I greet him like that? I, as well as the others explained that I just had an accident and showed him this.

“His next move was to give me a serious and heavy slap on my face, blaming me for disrespecting him. I then told him he is a horrible leader and what he did was bad. He accused me of confronting him. He carried a big stone and smashed all the glasses on my car, including the windscreen.

“Later, I went to the police station where I reported the case. When the police came, Mentilo Vanguard did not allow them to carry the vandalised car. Later, the DPO Okesa ordered again that the car should be evacuated to his station which the officers did. He (Mentilo) came to the station and agreed to settle amicably. I agreed as I did not have anywhere else to go or any other work. Oga (referring to the reporter), can you believe that Mentilo did not repair my vehicle till today in open and total defiance of an agreement with the police. I later repaired the car myself as that is my only means of livelihood.

In his own account, Fadairo Akinwale, a unit chairman in the association, said on January 17, 2013, Mentilo Vanguard came to his shop in Tosin Aluko Motor Park while preparing to travel. He explained that the Vanguard destroyed his wife’s shop where they sell beer and pepper soup. “They did that because I refused to join the Mentilo Vanguard because the Vanguard members were known to have been committing various atrocities,” he said.

He clarified that Vanguard had invited him earlier to join them to sack Ojuigo who was the Chapel chairman, adding that he called Ojuigo himself and told him the plans of the Vanguard.

Said he: ”About twenty of us held that secret meeting on January 12. But on the 17, they came to my wife’s shop and destroyed the entire place. How do I regain what was destroyed because it ran into millions of naira. Other accounts by members brought more revelations regarding how the state chairman had allegedly committed a crime for which he must now pay with his position.”

The involvement of the association secretary and other executive members

But, what thickens the plot against the state chairman was not just that nearly 30 Chapel Chairmen have one unsavoury story or the other to tell about their now troubled leader but that even the association secretary, Comrade Sesan Ogunlade is uncomfortable and has fallen out with the state chairman in respect of his alleged misdeeds. So also is the deputy chairman and twelve out of fourteen members of the state executive who have joined all chapel chairmen to petition the national leadership of the association rejecting Olanbiwonninu’s leadership.

Ogunlade explained that he had conferred with the chairman many times regarding his habitual high-handedness but which has not got him swayed desirably.

Mentilo’s deputy, Sunday Adeola also spoke of what he called “the atrocities of the chairman,” saying “if I begin to tell you what he has done to me, to our members in the exco, to chapel chairmen and unit heads, we will not leave this place today. Anything I say now, I can say it in his presence as I have done before.

    The embattled state chairman’s defence

In his defense, the embattled chairman Rotimi Olanbiwonninu denied the allegations of high-handedness and collecting N100 million from Governor Fayemi. He told The Nation that on the day the problem started, he was in Abuja being a member of the National Executive Council which was then billed to meet President Goodluck Jonathan on appointment.

Said he: “When we heard of the development, the National President advised me to leave and return. I was coming back and when I got to Okene, I gathered that I was actually the target and that I was being asked to go.

He denied having spent more than eight years, clarifying that he assumed position in 2007, “which makes my administration just six years in office and not eight,” adding it was equally wrong to accuse him of being high-handed and inconsiderate when he does not meddle in the responsibilities and functions of other members of the state executive.

Olanbiwonninu said: “How can they accuse me of running a one man show. That cannot be true. At the chapel level, they have an executive which is independent of the state. At the unit level, they also have an executive council. It is impossible that I would be running the chapel and unit on my own.

He noted that it was true that he had been commending the state governor for his good works and development efforts in the state as government’s efforts on roads had benefitted his members more than any other segment of the state. “I have also not collected any N100 million from government as they are saying. If I have such money, I will change my business,” he said.

On the allegation that he uses Mentilo Vanguard to witch-hunt and oppress members, the troubled chairman admitted that there was a Vanguard, the founding and operations of which belongs to members of the association “who admire me and who said they wanted to appreciate my good works in the association by forming a group with that name.”

He also clarified that so far, the state government has given the association a total of 16 buses and 40 cars which he instructed the state Public Relations Officer (PRO) to distribute according to laid down procedures with my deputy, secretary and other members of the executive having their own shares.

“You can investigate yourself and find out that majority of the functions of the administration, I hand them over to the deputy and the secretary. The secretary is the head of administration. He is not to be a spare tyre.

As the pronouncement of the national president is awaited

The verdict of the National President is now being awaited. The Fact Finding Committee currently on board in the state will conclude its brief coming Saturday, January 18 and will submit its report on 19th which will be a Sunday. It is on that day that the National President is expected to make a pronouncement on what happens next.

While it is unclear who the association had resolved to pick as the next state chairman, the findings had indicated that the aggrieved parties have vowed to resume the war should the pronouncement return the current state chairman to the office.

According to them, “It is a clear no retreat, no surrender situation. The association is prepared to ensure that a new leadership is installed. We have already forgotten the misdeeds of Mentilo, but should attempts be made to return him here, heads will roll.”
