    Ortom: rumours soiling Benue’s image

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has said lies peddled on the social media are giving Benue a negative image before the international community.

“Lies on social media give Benue a negative image before the international community. There is freedom of speech, but we want social media users to always verify information before posting or sharing,” he said.

Ortom spoke at Jato-Aka in Kwande, yesterday, at a thanksgiving in honour of the Executive Chairman, Benue Internal Revenue Service (BIRS), Mrs. Mimi Orubibi, who was conferred with the traditional title of Iwanger (shining light) of Kwande.

He advised social media users to use freedom responsibly.

Ortom acknowledged that Benue was going through some challenges, but they were being tackled.

“We have some challenges; salaries have not been regular, but God will soon provide solution to that problem,” he said.

The governor urged parents to support the government to fight substance abuse among  pupils.

He explained that the anti-open grazing law was restricted to Benue, whose people collectively endorsed it at town hall meetings and through representatives at the House of Assembly.

He noted that appointing Orubibi as the state’s chief tax collector was a tough decision.

“Since the creation of Benue, only men had served as chief tax collectors; appointing a woman was not an easy task.

“For some time, I contemplated the issue but eventually allowed God’s will to prevail. I am happy that she has made me proud,” he said.

Orubibi thanked God and the governor for the appointment, noting that Ortom was the first to appoint a woman as a chief tax collector in the country.

She promised to put in her best to justify the confidence reposed on her.

    Community refutes crisis ‘rumours’

‘Let the truth be told, Ibeku is not for sale and the days of imposition are over forever and so anybody pushing for the recognition of any person through the backdoor other than Ukaegbu is trying to cause trouble’

The stakeholders of Ibeku kingdom in Umuahia North council area of Abia State have denied that there is crisis in their community, urging those spreading the crisis ‘rumours’ to desist.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, the state capital, the spokesman of the group, Chief Joshua Ogbonna said those behind the reports were people ostracised by Ogurube IV, Eze Samuel Onuoha for opposing him.

Ogbonna said that the Ibeku Egu Asa Development Association (IEADA), on January 26 this year, conducted an election for the executives of the association which produced Chief Princewill Ukaegbu which did not go down well with some people.

He said such people, 31 in number, were causing problems in the community and saying things against their revered Ogurube which led to their being cursed.

“They have been told what to bring to appease the gods, which they have started doing,” he said.

The Ibeku stakeholders spokesman said that what took place last week which was reported in the press, “Is those who have been ostracized after presenting materials to appease the gods which the Ogurube did for them and they are free to join IEADA”.

Part of a statement which Ogbonna read said, “For the avoidance of doubt, there was no peace settlement meeting ever held in Ibekuland, rather what transpired was that those who were sanctioned and ostracized by the Ogurube-in-council for desecrating the land…had gone to the Ogurube to beg for pardon and appeasement of the gods of the land. Let no one be deceived as the purported peace settlement did not take place, all that transpired was a mere plea for re-admission of those who had despised the stool of Ogurube.

“Let the truth be told, Ibeku is not for sale and the days of imposition are over forever and so anybody pushing for the recognition of any person through the backdoor other than Ukaegbu is trying to cause trouble”.

Stop spreading rumours about Buhari’s health, Atiku tells Nigerians

Former Vice President and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji  Atiku Abubakar has urged Nigerians to desist from  spreading rumours about the health condition of President Muhammadu Buhari and spend  time to pray for his safe return to continue to pilot the affairs of the country.

In a statement by  his media office in Abuja, Atiku said: “Every human being  is a mere mortal irrespective of how great or highly accomplished we are. We deserve the care and support of one another in trying times.

“ President Buhari needs all the prayers and goodwill he can get at this time, to enable him return from his medical vacation in the UK and continue with his God-ordained assignment of steering Nigeria to her next level of greatness.

“Each of us go through times when we are not feeling in top form. The last thing we need in those times is mockery or ill will.”

  • Of Kogi’s satanic rumours

SIR: It is not completely wrong to affirm that Kogi and its people are never tired of grabbing the news headlines for the very wrong reasons. It does appear that the most lucrative and thriving industry in the whole of Kogi State is the rumour industry. The industry was strangely silent for a long while, but came alive recently when some characters fabricated an ungodly story that Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello has passed on!

This is politics taken too far.

Undoubtedly, death is one of the phases of our earthly sojourn. All living beings are indebted to it. As stated in all Holy books, all living beings shall taste death. What no one can tell is the time, day, month and year. We truly have no say with regards to how long or short we will live here. So it is unthinkable for any depraved mind to arrogate God’s power to himself by deciding the fate of his fellow being.

If you ask me, personal interest and desperation for power are at the heart of this maliciously crafted rumour. Governor Yahaya Bello, like any other human being aspires for the best. No one wants to be perpetually confined to a particular position in life. His resolve to take a break from his private life to venture into partisan politics was to offer himself for service.

The governor in his quest to right the wrongs in Kogi State has stepped on so-called big toes, touched the untouchables and ended the reign of political merchants whose stock in trade is to mindlessly feed fat on the system. These moves are enough to incur the angst of these evil merchants. But they just cannot succeed. It is all an exercise in futility. Kogi must work.  ehood about people. No man can decide the fate of his fellow man. Sincerely, I bear no grudge against those behind my husband’s rumoured death. May Allah forgive them and cause them to have a change of heart. Alhamdullilah

ehood about people. No man can decide the fate of his fellow man. Sincerely, I bear no grudge against those behind my husband’s rumoured death. May Allah forgive them and cause them to have a change of heart. Alhamdullilah. Bello’s emergence as Governor of Kogi State defies human comprehension. The event has the trappings of divinity. So, attempting to interrogate the entire scenario is tantamount to faulting God’s supremacy. Power comes from God.

    Ovoke laughs off transfer rumours

Rivers  United winger, Bernard Ovoke has assured fans of the club that he will not be leaving the club in the ongoing transfer window.

Ovoke has been linked with a move to several Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) clubs following a sparkling showing in the first half of the season.

“There was concrete interest from no less than three clubs but I have decided to stay here (at Rivers United),” Ovoke told supersport.com.

In a remarkable display of honesty, the attacker said  he was tempted but revealed that after ‘extensive consultations’, he decided to stay at United for sporting reasons.

“I will not lie I was tempted because the clubs we are talking about are big sides. But I had extensive consultations with people that I respect and they advised me to stay at Rivers United for the sake of my career. I will stay on at Rivers United,” he said.

  • Pogba Plan drawn up amid Madrid rumours

Pogba Plan drawn up amid Madrid rumours

Barcelona will reportedly attempt to sign Paul Pogba during the summer, but the Frenchman will have to wait until the club’s transfer ban concludes in January 2016 before moving to the Camp Nou.

Luis Enrique’s side are expected to face stiff competition for his signature, and particularly from Real Madrid, according to Mundo Deportivo (translated by Tom Conn of Inside Spanish Football):

Pogba is one of the most coveted players in European football and while Barcelona cannot officially register him as a player until next January, they will try to rival the continent’s top clubs for his services but may ultimately lose out to arch-rivals Real Madrid.

However, Conn’s report suggests Barca will exploit a loophole in their transfer hiatus to secure “several major signings.” Juventus may prefer to agree a deal and keep Pogba for an extra few months, providing Massimiliano Allegri with extended time to find a suitable replacement.

Interestingly, Conn indicates Barcelona will attempt to sign Madrid star Isco if Pogba can’t be attained.

It’s likely the Spanish midfielder will be frustrated with rotation upon Pogba’s arrival—especially as Carlo Ancelotti is unlikely to drop Luka Modric or James Rodriguez—despite regularly putting in excellent performances for La Liga’s leaders this season.

Reports are fuelled by Pogba’s previous interview with Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Jamie Kemp of Inside Spanish Football) in which he called team-mate Fernando Llorente his “Spanish teacher.”

Pogba is a powerful midfielder who would add a physical presence to any midfield. He is blessed with a well-rounded game. He is a clever distributor of the ball, confident enough to skip around opponents and capable of scoring stunning goals, as highlighted below:

“I chose to speak to him about it because we have a good understanding of one another and I rate his opinion very highly,” he added. “He told me what he honestly thinks, which he also did before my moves to Leverkusen and to Chelsea.

“We first spoke about a move to Wolfsburg quite some time ago because he believed that, considering the tactical approach and playing style of the team, the move to Wolfsburg would be the right move for me.”

  • Osun SAS and the reign of rumours

Osun SAS and the reign of rumours

For some time now, the rumour mill in the State of Osun has been unduly astir and agog with its worrisome pastime of tickling the ears of people with fantastic untruths. The emerging pattern appears to be that anytime the government of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola introduces any comprehensive people-oriented policy, those whose pseudo patriotism inspires to harvest defeat from the jaw of victory quickly move to town, spawning a web of lies to discredit the programme.

Few months ago, some local political irritants and their unconscionable federal sponsors sought in vain to make sense of their hollow claims that the governor had concluded plans to first Islamise the state and then secede using the services of the young men it had trained in Cuba. These accusations fell flat and their sponsors were soon put to shame.

The latest in this concatenation of ridiculous and reprehensible rumours concerns the activities of the joint security taskforce code-named Swift Action Squad (SAS), recently inaugurated by the state government to combat criminality and make the state unappealing to criminals of whatever pedigree. The objectionable gist in the current rumour making the rounds is that the men of this new security team are fashion police put in place by the government to deal with ladies who dress indecently, and to harass innocent citizens!

Of course, since the rumour began, not one of the many ladies so punished by men of the SAS for wearing “too sexy clothes” has come to validate the bland claim. Except in the waning and circumscribed imagination of the peddlers of the rumours, nobody has come forward with a shred of evidence to prove a case of harassment or act of impunity against the joint patrol team of security men.

In the version voyeuristically favoured by one Alabi Sodiq (circulated on some blogs and published in the September 4, edition of Thisday newspaper), it was claimed a young lady was “arrested” by SAS operatives on Saturday August 25, at Iwo. He claimed that the lady “was accused of wearing a top revealing her breast and the soldiers forced her to remove her top so as to totally reveal the breast she was ‘trying to flaunt’. Then, goes the story, a passing innocent Okada rider, who had no idea what was happening, was also stopped and asked by the soldiers to fondle the exposed breast of this young woman. The Okada man tried to turn down this offer and that’s a decision he would be regretting for a long time. He was mercilessly beaten and at the end he had to do as asked”.

On the surface, it appeared Sodiq was doing the right thing that any public-spirited, law-abiding citizen would do – calling the attention of the authorities to the unlawful actions of a security unit, more so that, in his claim, the information was not fictitious. But in truth, this was blatant disinformation meant to cause needless apprehension in the peaceful people of the state. Except that he saw a young girl running for whatever reason on sighting a patrol vehicle, every other thing in his boondoggle was a product of hearsay. Perhaps because he is alien to the culture of crosschecking the facts of his claims beyond any scintilla of doubt as any credible writer and well meaning citizen would have done, he unquestioningly accepted the hogwash he was told hook, line and sinker as gospel truth!

For those living in or visiting any part of Osun, it is very clear that all of the red security vehicles used by SAS have bold numbers inscribed on them, both front and back, for easy identification. The easiest thing for anybody who witnessed the wrongdoing of these security men to do is to take down the number and include it in their reports. But in the circulated reports against SAS, not one person – not even the seemingly observant Sodiq– has provided the vehicle number of the particular SAS unit that carried out the rumoured act. There has not even been any simple verbal description of the vehicle. Not one of the different versions of the wicked rumours gave a clear description of the actual place where the incident occurred. I have heard and read different places like Osogbo, Ile-Ife, and Iwo mentioned without any precise location within them identified as the place where passers-by witnessed the event.

Assuming I were ignorant of what the average Nigerians can do with their camera phones at the scene of a sordid event, I might not have bothered surfing the net for a video or picture from episode. However, since the story was a product of the fevered imagination of rumour-mongers with sinister intentions, no single picture or video clip exists to affirm the veracity of the claims. It was Nigerians, not foreigners, who witnessed the beastly assault some low-minded Naval ratings executed against Uzoma Okereke sometime in 2010, that recorded the shameful acts and uploaded it on the Internet for the world to see. Did camera phones or other similar devices go into extinction while soldiers assault and harass a lady and an okada rider (the imaginative creations of mischief makers)?

Moreover, I remember that the Special Adviser to the Governor Aregbesola was on live broadcast of the state television station about two weeks ago to encourage witnesses or victims of the untoward acts of SAS to contact him or the TV station with useful information. He gave out his personal number and six other numbers for this purpose. Not a single person has ventured in that direction.

I have the hunch that those behind these rumours are incorrigible enemies of the state, who are unhappy with the progress being made. It is not even unlikely that these supine and faceless people behind the misleading tales are the ones who are exceedingly uncomfortable with the reality that they may not be able to rig elections because there is a crime-fighting military apparatus on ground. Politically-motivated crimes are stamped out in Osun and the graceless sponsors are in distress, hence the horrible rumours. What is more, in the better-forgotten years of the Oyinlola administration, Osun citizens were at the mercy of criminals. Today, it is a different story with the current administration. With the solid presence of security men in strategic areas around the state, it is very possible that criminals are sorely troubled that the party is over. This too could be another reason for the ruinous claims against the new security outfit the government has put in place to ensure the security of life and property of the people.

While it is not impossible that some of these security men could be guilty of certain excesses in the performance of their duty, it is also not inconceivable that some weightless politicians and their foot soldiers incapable of deep introspection would resort to cheap lies and rumours in order to destroy a scheme that serves the people of the state very well.

In his address at the inauguration of SAS, Aregbesola did not mention fashion policing as part of the duties of this security scheme. What will make sense is for people to report any unseemly conduct by members of the squad, with verifiable evidence. It is another way we can all participate in the onerous task of ensuring the security of the people of our various communities. Let all mischief makers, rumour-mongers, and political irritants know that no edifice of lies can survive where the sledgehammer of truth is active.
