  • Nigeria Migrants Forced into Prostitution in Russia

A Nigerian female football fan stranded in Russia has now been forced into prostitution.

The female spectator has not returned to Nigeria eight months after the 2018 FIFA World Cup ended.

Narrating her ordeal to a Non-Governmental Organization in Moscow, the lady said she was introduced to the illicit trade by a woman who  claimed to be helping her.

“She took my passport and my Fan ID,”  she said.

“I want to stay in Russia.

“Not to stay permanently – I just want to have some money, so that at least when I go back to Nigeria I can start a business,” she added.

It has been revealed that a lot of young girls were trafficked during the June 2018 World Cup.

Russian Interior Ministry reported last week that the number of fans still stranded had reduced to 5,500.

According to Evgeni Yastrebov, a consultant on immigration issues with Civic Assistance Committee, an organisation that works with refugees in Russia told the BBC in an interview, that many of those fans have been stranded in Russia and desperately in need of help.

“Many of them came from Nigeria, with some from Cameroon, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

“They were looking to apply for asylum and stay here and that didn’t work out and now many of them are getting deported on a daily basis.

“The [Russian] government offers no assistance to people who want to seek asylum and stay in Russia and right now these people are struggling.

“Right now it’s winter and it’s very cold and they need warm clothing. Some of them get money sent to them from home and some engage in unofficial jobs but they are underpaid and it’s not enough to take care of themselves.”

  • After Russia 2018: Lagosians cry over losses to bet

The early exit of football teams of the supposedly heavy-weight countries at the just concluded world biggest football fiesta tagged “Russia 2018 ‘’, which ended on July 15, resorted into joys to the betting companies.

It, however, brought agonies to several of those who staked with the betting companies in Lagos for possible claims or dividends, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Many of such clients have continued to count their losses following the defeat suffered by their preferred teams by their opponents.

NAN reports that sports betting has now become a booming business in the country for people to make ends meet and sequel to the fact that most of those who indulge in betting have special interests in football in particular.

Many Nigerians that include: students, adults and upwardly mobile men and women have dominated the customers of the various betting companies and, especially, sports betting.

The fast pace at which new betting companies with special bias for sports are emerging is alarming and welcoming.

Some of the betting companies include :Nairabet (the first online sports betting website in Nigeria), Supabets Promotion, Winnersbet, Betland, Surebet247, Merry Bet, NairaStake, GoldenBet, Betcolony, Bet2win, Bet365naija, Bet9ja, 1960bet, 360bet, 9jaPredict, Winners Golden Bet, Lionsbet.

After the grand finale of the Russia 2018 where Croatia lost to France, a customer who had staked N50, 000 before the match thinking that Croatia would emerge the overall winner wept uncontrollably when he realized that his fortunes had gone into the drain pipes.

It took the efforts of other fans there to console him and reminded him that participating in the Olympics is not always meant one to win

After he had regained his composure, he told other fans that he staked such a huge amount on the team because of its sterling performances right from the group stage up to the semi-final.

“With what happened now, I have learnt my lessons that truly, anything can happen in the game of football,’’ he said.

Also, another customer, Jamiu Ojo, who staked N20,000 with his belief that  Germany would beat South Korea to advance to the next stage of the world cup went wild when the outcome of the match did not favour him.

He told NAN that he had recorded more losses than he had won. “I will keep betting because I hope that one day I will hit the jackpot.’’

He said that like most people, he used to have the impression that betting was an avenue for people to make quick and easy cash.

“To tell you the truth, it is not easy to make money from betting. Beating the bookmakers is not an easy task.

“They trick you with good odds, but in the end, only a handful people win.

“Betting most times requires lots of research and luck, “he said.

Another staker who simply identified himself as Punmba as his betting identity said, “This World Cup prediction has turned to be a shocker.’’  Punmba told NAN that he lost close to N200,000 to betting during the fiesta.

“To be honest, I was expecting to make a lot of money during the World Cup because I assumed that there would be high chances of the stronger teams defeating the smaller ones.

“ However, the underdogs at this World Cup have proved to be up to the task of defeating  the supposedly stronger ones, and this has caused a major upset for me this time around, “he said.

A report by www.nairaland.com, an online website, stated that “60 million Nigerians between 18 years and 40 years of age spend more than N1 billion daily on sports betting”.

The report also revealed that “a betting company can generate up to N20 million monthly and use between N5 million and N7 million to meet winners’ obligation in terms of payment”.

Kunle Olawale, an agent with a betting company, and manages a centre  in Okota area of Lagos State told NAN that he wished he had enough capital to  start his own betting company.

“These companies make a lot of money. We send loads of cash to their headquarters after the end of each day’s transactions’’.

Olawale said that the emergence of the betting outfits had increased and boosted business for operators of viewing centres across the nation.

Also, Adeyinka Samson, the General Manager of SureBet247, explained why the betting business had been expanding so fast during in a press conference.

“I think that first and foremost, this country has been receptive of the benefits that technology can afford us.

“Like we all know, betting has been in existence in advanced countries for many years and we are also trying to emulate what is happening in the other parts of the world. “he said.

NAN reports that just as the business has its negative side, so also its positive side.

Prof. Godwin Ighalo of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in Edo,   won over N58 million with just a N800 total bet on 1960BET in 2015.

Ighalo of the Department Computer Engineering at the University won N58, 945,553, after placing bets with N800 in 1960Bet.

It had been adjudged as the biggest sum ever won in the history of sports betting in the country.

He was said to have accomplished the feat after placing bets on two different bet slips of N500 and N300.

Ighalo speaking then on how he was able to achieve the feat said,   “Since my childhood days, I used to have strong interests in probability, relationships and special intelligence. All these with adequate sports betting research I conducted over the years, helped in making it possible.” –

The don was quoted as saying that he had been placing bets for no less than 25 years and had the faith that one day luck would shine on him.

  • Rescued Thai boys to miss World Cup final

The young Thai football club members who have been rescued from a cave will be unable to take up an invitation to attend the World Cup final in Moscow, their doctors said on Tuesday.

The eight members of the Wild Boar football team who have been rescued thus far need to stay for at least another week in hospital, doctors say, meaning that they have no chance of making Sunday’s match.

Rescue operations for the other four members, and their coach, are under way.

On Friday, FIFA president Gianni Infantino invited the 12 trapped boys to Russia at the cost of football’s world governing body.

Instead, doctors say that the boys will follow the game on TV from their hospital beds – if they manage to stay awake.

Kick-off is at 10 pm (1500 GMT) local time.

The ten rescued boys remain in quarantine.

The group got trapped in the cave on June 23.

  • France vs Belgium: Thierry Henry in dilemma, say football fans

Some football fans in Lafia say they foresee Thierry Henry, a French national and assistant coach of Belgian National Football team team, finding himself in a dilemma as France and Belgium lock horns Tuesday in one of the semi final encounters in the ongoing FIFA World Cup competition in Russia.

They expressed their feelings in separate interviews with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia on Monday.

NAN reports that Henry is a retired French footballer who was part of the victorious french team that won the World cup tournament in 1998.

One of the fans, Olukunmi Gideon, told NAN that Henry’s situation was quite ‘dicey’ as he has a difficult decision to make on which team to support during the encounter because of his affiliation to both sides.

Gideon said Henry’s best bet is to remain neutral and focus on his job as assistant coach, but added that pretending to be emotionless would be difficult for the former football great.

“He will suffer emotionally; nobody prays to be in this kind of situation; he wont want to be seen supporting Belgium against his home country and he cannot be with Belgium and be openly supporting France.

“Its a dicey one for him and I pity him; it is going to be 90 minutes of hell for him. If France wins, he cannot celebrate; it is the same if Belgium wins.

This is not just any match; it is the semi finals of a world cup competition, where footballing countries dream of playing in. I pity him,” he said.

Aliyu Danbaba, another football fan, wished if it were possible for Henry to stay away from the venue of the match and watch it in privacy, where he would be free to express his emotions, instead of hiding his true feelings out of respect for both countries.

“For me, Roberto Martinez, the head coach of Belgium, should allow Henry to stay somewhere else and watch it alone because it wont be easy for him.

“If Belgium scores and eventually win, will he (Henry) sit and not join the celebration? lets be practical here. He is a human with emotion,” he said.

One his part, John Akpana suggested that the organisers of the World Cup, Federation de International Football Association (FIFA), should limit focus on Henry during the encounter.

He also urged both teams and nationals of both countries, to show understanding for Henry’s precarious situation, adding that doing so will make Henry a little bit relaxed and comfortable during the match.

“Everybody must understand that it is not Henry’s making that his home country and the team he currently works for, should meet at any point in this tournament, so everyone must be sensitive and show understanding,” he said.

  • Three lions in another jinx battle

The Three Lions of England who just broke a jinx winning penalty shoot outs faces yet another jinx of surviving quarter final matches.

They never progressed beyond this stage when they beat Cameroon in R16 in 1990. The last time they English team appeared in the quarters they lost on penalties to Portugal.

Samara Arena, venue of the match between the Three Lions who Nigerian fans prefer to call ‘Three kittens’, will witness a lot of English fans who are passionate about football. England was the world capital of soccer hooliganism until the 70s when FIFA roared the country into surrender.

England is meeting old foes, Sweden for the 25th time but available statistics show 8 wins for England, 7 for Sweden and 9 draws. In the two times they traded tackles at the world cup, they were draws of 1-1 in 2002 and 2-2 in 2006 all in group stages. Last time they met was at 2012 Euro championship and England ran away with a 3-2 victory.

A check on prediction voting shows a handsome 51% voted for an English victory 20% says it’s gonna be a Swedish win while 29% feels the winner will emerge from penalty shootouts. Disgraced Argentine star, Diego Maradona will not take that stuff. He described England’s victory against Columbia in R16 as “monumental robbery”.

Sweden lives on old commendation as they have been in 5 quarters in the world cup and only lost to Germany in 1934. They appeared in the Semis in 1938, 1958 and 1994 and that was before democracy returned to Nigeria in 1999.

On current ratings, statistics show that England is just a ‘shine shine bobo’ who used Panama to shine scoring 6 goals two of which were penalties. Panama’s scored against them. They beat Tunisia 2-1 and lost to Belgium 0-1 before Columbia got the1-1 equalizer through Mina 90+3’ and The Lions almost got lost in the forest thicket beating Columbia 4-3 on penalties. They were simply lucky.

Harry Kane has 6 goals as the tournament highest scorer but there are Stones with two goals, Raheem Sterling the short but dangerous winger, Young folks like Lingard and Rashford with Pickford in goal who has leaked 4 goals apart from penalty shoot-out. That might be the channel of Sweden’s victory.

Sweden defense is strong looking like steel fence. Out of four countries they have faced, only Germany scored 2 goals against them. The pattern of the scoring could be the key for England’s win. Reus scored 45+3’ and Toni Kroos got the winner in that 2-1 victory in 90+5’.

That tells us Sweden is like the Super Eagles of Nigeria that loses concentration at dying moments of almost all their matches. Injury time in the first half, and injury time in the second half, hmmm. Think about it. Sweden got a penalty to defeat Korea and spanked Mexico neatly 3-0 before stopping the Swiss team 1-0 in R16. Granqvist is highest scorer of the team scoring two penalties against Korea and against Mexico. Larsen their hero is yet to score.

Given the tough defense and the sleekly Swedish movements coupled with a panicky English defense, Sweden should win within regulation time. Did you notice that the VAR was not referred to even once in the England v Columbia match even when players agitated?

It is expected that Russians will fill 0ver 75% space of the 48,000 capacity Fisht Stadium in Sochi built in 2014 for the summer Olympics when Russia and Croatia clash Saturday 1900 WAT. Russia dazed a perennial Saudi soccer weakling 5-0 and slammed a Moh Sallah less Egypt 3-1 but Uruguay cut them to size in their backyard 3 nil. The stadium was turned to a grave yard as the Russian party was K. I. V. a term common to civil service treatment of files keeping in view action of pending decisions.

Russia was super lucky to escape the raid of the power packed Spaniards. Spain got an own goal gift in 12’ and Dzyuba scored the equalizer via penalty in 41’/ It was a rough match filled in with protests. Any team that will have to beat hosts Russia will do it neatly from shots outside box 18.Russia goalkeeper is used to drop balls from faulty catches and rebounds kick will give smart victory.

Russia had W3, L1, 9GF, GA5 and GD+4. Russia is reaching their first quarters since the country broke in 1990. They were in the quarters 4 times between 1958-1970. Russia and Croatia had met three times before in the qualifiers each time ended goalless but at the Euro 2008 Croatia won. In 2015 during a friendly match in November of 2015 at Rostov Stadium, now one of the venues of the world cup, Croatia won 3-1.

Even soccer pundits did not give the match to Russia, 24% said Russia would win, 44% gives it to Croatia and a 32% say the winner will emerge via penalties. Some five hosts had progressed into the semis, Italy (1990); France (1998); South Korea (2002); Germany (2006) and Brazil (2014).

Croatia has improved on their scoring ability. They scored as many goals in this their Russia 2018 4 matches than they scored in the 6 games played in their two world cup appearances of 2006 and 2014. Bewarang, who spoke with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at Hilton Hotel in St. Petersburg, said the federation was yet to do a review of the Eagles’ matches at the Mundial.

‘‘On returning home, NFF will meet to do a review of Super Eagles’ ouster in the competition with a view to avoid a re-occurrence in future.

‘’This will enable the federation to know the strength and weaknesses of the team, do a surgical operation with a view to moving forward,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the Super Eagles lost the first Group D match 0-2 to Croatia in the opening game, won their second match 2-0 against Iceland but failed to qualify to the round of 16 after a 1-2 loss to Argentina.

He said that it was unfortunate the Nigerian system thrived on fire-brigade approach to things.

‘‘Ordinarily, like most advanced countries do we are supposed to start preparing for the next World Cup now, but Nigeria will wait till the eve of another one before swinging into action,’’ Bewarang said.

He said that the NFF seemed to emphasise on the development of age grade players, where there would be U-13 and U-15 competitions.

‘‘For instance, if a player is U-15 now, in four years he would be 19 years old. This was what happened in the case of Kylan Mbape of France who has the energy and skill to perform,’’ he said.

Speaking on the needed synergy between the Coach of the team, Garnet Rohr and the Technical Committee, Bewarang said that the relationship existing was not too cordial.

‘‘Personally I have relationship and access to Rohr but it is not official. There must be a situation whereby my committee will be able to make input into what he is doing.

‘’Though, they say there is a subsisting contract with him, the agreement must be such that will accommodate the contributions of the committee,’’ he said.

He cited example of the arrangement before U. S. ’94 World Cup where even though Coach Clemens Westerhof already had his team intact but still bent backwards to accommodate some other good players.

‘‘You can recall how the likes of Sunday Oliseh, Chidi Nwanu and Mike Emenalo, who were discovered to be good later, were absorbed to earn better result to the benefit of the country,’’ he said.

This, he said, led to the spectacular performance of Nigeria in that edition of World Cup where Super Eagles stunned to the globe to reach the round of 16.

NAN reports that after the Eagles’ brilliant performance leading to Nigeria’s qualification to the World Cup, NFF renewed Rohr’s contract for another two years, an agreement ton end in 2020.

  • Maradona ‘fine’ after scare, chided for obscene gesture

Argentina great Diego Maradona said he was fine after appearing to take ill during the South Americans’ World Cup win over Nigeria on Tuesday, but found himself in hot water again after making an obscene gesture at the game.

“I want to let you know I’m fine. I’m not nor was I hospitalised,” the 57-year-old said via Instagram on Wednesday.

Maradona, who was seen being helped to walk from his seat amid the excitement of Tuesday’s game in St. Petersburg, said a doctor had suggested he left at halftime after his neck hurt and he felt he might faint.

“But I wanted to stay, because it was all or nothing. How could I leave?” he said.

“A kiss for you all, sorry for the fright, thanks for putting up with me, Diego is around for a bit longer!”

During the game, Maradona drew attention with his antics in the stands lapping up the adulation from fans, unveiling a poster of himself and seemingly falling asleep at one point.

Then, after Marcos Rojo’s 86th minute winner secured Argentina’s place in the last 16, he made a middle-finger gesture with both hands.

“From the hands of God, to the fingers of shame”, read one headline in Latin America, referring to Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal against England at the 1986 World Cup.

The Argentine is no stranger to controversy, having once shot at journalists with an air rifle, and has battled cocaine and alcohol addictions.

Gary Lineker, who played for England in the 1986 game and is now a pundit for the BBC, said Maradona had gone too far with the gesture.

“Diego Maradona perhaps let himself down with his celebration,” he said. “You understand how he’s euphoric, that’s for sure, but this kind of reaction, really Diego?”

Argentine journalist Daniel Arcucci later released on Twitter audio of a purported conversation he had with Maradona, during which he denied anything major had happened at the match but sounds slurred in parts.

“I swear on my mother … absolutely nothing happened,” he says.

“They were only serving white wine in our box. Ok, we had two wines … At the end, we went to eat …

“I like red wine, but there was white wine. Each to his own.”

  • Enyeama, Okocha hail Super Eagles, say better days ahead

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, has commended the team and urged Coach Gernot Rohr to build for better days after their heartbreaking exit from the Russia 2018 World Cup on Tuesday.

Nigeria were dumped out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after they lost 2-1 to Argentina at Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Argentina scraped through to the Round of 16 after Lionel Messi broke his drought at the tournament to give the two-time world champions the lead in the 13th minute.

It was the fifth time the Nigeria team was losing to Argentina at the World Cup.

Victor Moses restored parity for the Super Eagles from the spot after Javier Mascherano was adjudged to have fouled Leon Balogun in the box.

Marcos Rojo scored a stunning late winner three minutes from time to send Jorge Sampaoli’s side to the next round.

Nigeria finished third in Group D with three points, one adrift of Argentina who nicked second spot with the victory.

However, Enyeama tweeted on Wednesday “Naija forever. Win or lose. Qualify or eliminated.#WeAreNigeria we build for better days.”

Also, former Nigerian captain, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, admitted that the Super Eagles lost to Argentina due to “limited experience.”

He said “Uzoho kept us in the game with the saves he made in the second half. We panicked in the first half,” as he analysed the game on SuperSport.

Okocha added that “We were not clear to keep more players in attack. We were limited in terms of experience.

“It was a gift from Mascherano but then I thought we started the second half better. We got ourselves in better places. It was a fantastic penalty from Moses but I think we should have put them under more pressure.”

On the controversial penalty denied the Super Eagles, the former Bolton Wanderers playmaker said the Nigerian team did not put more pressure on the referee.

Marcos Rojo handled the ball in the box involuntarily and the referee viewed it on VAR but ruled it out.

“Nobody appealed under the referee. We know what the Argentines are like. Rojo got away with one.”

On Wilfred Ndidi’s chance in the 76th minute, Okocha said: “he had more time to keep the ball down to take a good shot.

“Scoring is not his thing but I feel he should have kept the ball a close more to take a better shot.”

On Odion Ighalo’s miss, Okocha’s said: “it was a glorious chance, the ball sat down well for him. If I was Ighalo, I would try to force a save from the goalkeeper. If you don’t hit the target you don’t get your job done.”

Ighalo extended his goal drought to eight games. The Changchun Yatai striker has scored four goals in 21 games for the Super Eagles.

On the late goal the team conceded, the former PSG play maker added: “We’ve seen so many late goals in this tournament. Poor defending. Moses reacted late. I have seen him deal with that at Chelsea. I can’t fault the effort of the player the gave their best.

“It was going to be tough for us and it lived up to that and it went to the last three minutes, but I think we have to look at the bigger picture. Most of these players it was the first time.

“For the manager he did well. It’s about continuity. We don’t have to point fingers at anyone,” he said.

  • Russia 2018:  Senegal showcases Africa’s can-do spirit

SIR: From the reception given to the players by their president in Senegal to their first match against Poland in the on-going World Cup, their mission is clear.  Their president made them to understand that they are going to war to fight for the pride of their country.  The battle is for the best and they should fear no human being.  The team has fiercely executed the wish of their president.  They have played their games with elegance and poise.  Their masculinity will make every woman blush and men bashful for their physical shortcomings.  They are the quintessence of beauty on the football field.

The Senegal team has shown that Africans can compete in the World Cup just as passionately as any other people.  They have exhibited determination, tough-mindedness and willingness to be the best.  They move around the field like dancers entertaining the spectators while at the same time purposeful of their aim to win the games.  They will intimidate because they have the physicality.  They will dribble the ball because they have the finesse.  Opponents are left to the chance that there will be a let up in the flow of the divine football orchestra they are performing with their feet.  They flash shining smiles to relax abused minds as if to remind them that it is all fun and game.  The joy they exude stirs the heart of spectators.  It is magnificent to watch the simplicity of the black giants.

Their confidence has pleasantly opened the immensity of the reservoir of football talent among other African teams featuring in the World Cup.  They have all started showing that they come to be the world champion.  It was disheartening to watch the way they played as non-serious contenders in their opening matches.  Leave it to the Western media to hype up their performances as lacking maturity expected in World Cup competition.  The Senegal team has made them to sing a different tune.  Powerful, strong and competitive, they have become the new narrative to define African excellence by the Western commentators.  Though they make those fine words sound like negative attributes, pureness of spirit exemplified by the players is glaring.

The conspiracy by the West to diminish the African ingenuity must collapse. The people have been exploited for too long. Like Mohammed Ali said, I know that something must be wrong when everything white is considered good and anything back is bad. Africa must rise to exert their competitiveness in the field of global affairs. The leaders must wake up from their complacency. This is not to advocate that they should emulate the bad examples of the West but to put the human spirit first in advancing a beautiful experience.  We all share the common joy of lifting our existence to a glorious stage. The mesmerizing moves by players during World Cup are unbeatable.  May the best performers dominate!
