Expected line-up if Liverpool must defeat Spartak Moscow

Liverpool plays Spartak Moscow in Russia tonight (Kickoff time is 7:45pm – West Africa Standard Time) to put their qualification back on track after playing a 2-2 draw with Sevilla at Anfield.

Recall that Liverpool’s last five games have seen them play beautiful football but with no good result to show for it after they were thrashed by Man City 5 goals to nothing.

In other disappointing games, they drew with Sevilla (2-2), drew 1-1 with Burnley, eliminated by Leicester in the Carabao cup before getting back to winning ways against Leicester in the English Premier League (EPL) with the hard-fought match on Saturday.

Russia is a difficult place to go and get results for English teams as it has proved to be in the past.

Liverpool has played with Spartak Moscow on four occasions in European competitions, winning two and losing the other two.

If Liverpool must win against Spartak Moscow, they must on top of their game, which means their attack must put on their goalscoring boot; the midfielders must create enough for the Strikers and complement the defenders, who will be tasked with keeping the counter-attacking Spartak Moscow team at bay.

Here is Liverpool full squad for the Spartak Moscow game:

    Keepers: Karius, Mignolet, Ward

Defenders: Matip, Lovren, Moreno, Robertson, Alexander Arnold, Flanagan, Klavan

Midfielders: Henderson (captain), Wijnaldum, Milner, Can, Coutinho, Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Forwards:  Mane, Salah, Sturridge, Solanke, Firmino.

This is the line-up football analysts will expect for the game if Liverpool is to win the game in Russia. The club operates a 4-3-3 formation. that has been Liverpool’s formation since last season and it could be difficult to imagine Klopp changing it anytime from now.

    Expected Line-Up:

    Goalkeeper: Loris Karius.

Reason – Mignolet should be rested after his “hero and villain” performance against Leicester.  Ward should remain on the bench and Karius be given the nod to take charge of the goal post.

    Defenders: Flanagan, Matip, Lovren, Moreno.

ReasonFlanagan strength and power will be needed since Gomez is suspended for this game and the young Alexander-Arnold will be bullied on the ball.

Matip and Lovren should be at the heart of defence due to Klavan’s lack of pace and power.

Moreno should be given the nod ahead of Robertson due Moreno’s pace, his contribution to the attack and directness.

    Midfielders: Henderson, Can, Coutinho

ReasonHenderson will be expected to lead the team out on the field of play after a good all-round game on Saturday.

Wijnaldum or Can?  This is a big task for me to do. Either of the two can do the job but I will go for Can because of his versatility and his big body presence. Wijnaldum away performance is against him as he does not use to perform when he plays away from home. Coutinho automatically slots into creating and dictating the play from midfield.

    Forwards: Mane, Sturridge, Salah

Mane is ready for selection after not playing for his club’s last three games serving a suspension.

According to kloop, Mane is in the right frame of mind to start this game, so there is nothing stopping him from starting this game.

Mo Salah should start the game from the right side of the pitch, is pace and goal scoring ability will be needed if Liverpool is to win.

People will be expecting me to start Firmino for this match, but I will go for Sturridge. Many eyebrows will be raise as to this selection. In this match, Liverpool will need a natural number 9 to do the finishing which Sturridge has proven to be over the past years.

And moreover, Firmino needs rest as he has underperformed in the last two games and Sturridge showed what he is capable of doing in his brief cameo against Leicester.

With this strong line-up, I see Liverpool dismantling Spartak Moscow in Russia with a bit of luck.

  • Mane set to undergo surgery

    Mane set to undergo surgery

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane is set to undergo surgery on his injured left knee on Tuesday.

Manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed on Friday that Mane’s injury – sustained in the 3-1 Merseyside derby win over Everton earlier this month – will keep him out for the rest of the season.

Mane opened the scoring early on in the clash with Liverpool’s city rivals but limped off the field 12 minutes into the second half following a challenge by Everton full-back Leighton Baines.

The forward posted a picture on social media last week with his left knee in a brace, and has now been booked in for surgery on Tuesday, a day after celebrating his 25th birthday.

Mane has become a vital component of Klopp’s team since joining Liverpool from Southampton last summer in a deal worth up to £36m for the south coast club.

The Senegal international has scored 13 goals in his debut season at the club and has also contributed five assists.

He now looks set to miss Liverpool’s post-season friendly against Sydney FC in Australia, although the club hope Mane can recover from injury in time for the start of pre-season training.

Liverpool came from behind to beat Stoke 2-1 in Mane’s absence at the weekend to consolidate third position in the Premier League and keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Liverpool could be without Sadio Mane for part of the Premier League run-in, with fears an injury picked up by the forward during the Merseyside derby may have long-term repercussions.

Mane scored the opening goal in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Everton at Anfield, but he was forced off before the hour after his left leg was badly tangled in a challenge with Leighton Baines.

The Senegal attacker is the Reds’ top scorer this season with 13 goals and an enforced absence would compound the recent loss of Adam Lallana to a thigh injury.

Mane is almost certain to miss Wednesday’s Anfield meeting with Bournemouth, while the Reds’ dip in form when the forward was away on Africa Cup of Nations duty earlier this season gives an ominous warning for the games ahead.

“Today we played a really good game,” Klopp told a news conference. “Nearly everything was perfect.

“We win it, the performance was good [but] then we lose Sadio Mane. When I saw him in the dressing room, it didn’t look like he’ll be ready for Wednesday.

“We will see, hopefully it’s not that serious, but of course it’s not nothing and that makes our life not easier, I would say.

“Obviously he has pain and it didn’t look like it’s only a knock or a muscle or something, but we have to wait.

“When I came in I was looking for him immediately and I saw him on the bed. He’d already had treatment, and it didn’t look like he felt really comfortable.

Int’l friendly: Iheanacho’s late goal earns Nigeria draw against Senegal

Kelechi Iheanacho on Thursday in London scored a late goal to deny the Teranga Lions of Senegal a famous victory against the Super Eagles in an international friendly.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that an 82nd minute penalty kick scored by Iheanacho helped Nigeria secure a 1-1 draw in their friendly encounter at the Hives Stadium.

Moussa Sow had given the Teranga Lions an early second half lead in the 53rd minute, but they could not hold on for a victory over the Super Eagles.

Senegal were dominant in the midfield, with Idrissa Gueye presiding over it all with calm and quality.

But Sow upfront was far less mobile than Mane, and looked very ordinary until Daniel Akpeyi dropped a 53rd minute corner kick into his path for the opening goal.

Iheanacho did get two glorious chances to score, scuffing a shot across the goal from 18 yards, and then somehow prodding wide from point blank range.

He managed to redeem himself with 10 minutes to go, gliding onto a through-ball before being brought down by Pape Ndiaye, and rising to convert the penalty kick for the equaliser.

It was probably deserved, if only for Iheanacho’s persistent running.

He might even have won it with a snapshot wide in stoppage time, but neither side really did enough to win the game, or to entertain the sparse crowd.

When Sadio Mane came on, replacing debutant Opa Nguette, he earned the largest cheer of the night, bringing more excitement than either goal.

While he may not have actually contributed much on the pitch, it was the Liverpool man alone who provided any buzz around the Hive.

The Super Eagles will now look forward to their next friendly game against Burkina Faso in four days time.
