    •Actor debunks scam claims

As Nigerians come together to raise funds for ailing actor and veteran broadcaster, Sadiq Daba, using the #SaveSadiqDabaProject hashtag, there were rumours from certain quarters that it was a ploy by some people to defraud others. As at Monday, the actor’s account had been funded tot he tune of over N10.5m.

However, the ailing actor, who was diagnosed of leukemia and prostate cancer, has debunked claims that the fund drive was a fraud. The actor spoke during a visit by veteran broadcaster, Soni Irabor, and human rights activist, Joe Okei-Odumakin.

Odumakin who posted photographs and a short clip of the visit on her Facebook page also wrote; “Sadiq Daba is happy to tell you that he had to invite his UBA BRANCH Manager and his account officer to see for themselves whether it is a scam or not. Sadiq wishes to thank all the well-meaning Nigerians who defied all negative insinuations to send in their widow’s mite for the worthy cause. The total contribution is almost realised and we will keep you updated.”

Thanking Nigerians for the support they have shown to his health so far, Daba said; “I’ve never had cause to laugh like this. Because as God will have it, I’ve always said that he’s always been on my side. My branch manager is here with me. My accounts officer is here, all from UBA, Adeola Hopewell. What else? If you call this a scam, then I wonder whether you’re from Mars. Because certainly, this is UBA hereby represented. So, my fellow Nigerians, very good people who have been doing what you have been doing for me, continue to do it. Thank you, thank you, thank you and God bless you.”

In an earlier update, Odumakin informed Nigerians about the progress made so far with the #SaveSadiqDabaProject.

“We thank God that Nigerians have greatly influenced the possibility of getting quality treatment for our dear Icon, Sadiq Daba. Only four days (ago) the account was reading #350,000, then on Friday it rose to N1.5m and N10.5m as at 10am today (Monday) and it is growing. We pray it continues like this so that we can conclude in a matter of days,” she wrote.

  • I’m not a beggar, says ailing Sadiq Daba

I’m not a beggar, says ailing Sadiq Daba

While it is not in doubt, that veteran broadcaster and actor, Sadiq Daba is seriously ill, it is not clear, if he is in dire need of financial help to foot his medical bills.

After dispelling reports of the severity of his sickness two months back, the Kano-born entertainer became liberal recently, when he admitted being diagnosed with prostate cancer, following the earlier reported case of leukaemia.

Amidst outcry by fans on the social media, asking for financial help for the actor, he told The Nation on Monday that he detests the way the media is reporting his health issue. “I’m not a beggar!” he declared.

Daba, who had earlier rescheduled a chat with the reporter on the excuse that he was on his way to his doctor, said, “I’m alive… I’m about to see the doctor. Call me back anytime in the afternoon.”

Whatever the situation was at the hospital, it was confusing, as his reaction, much later, was of disinterest. Declining any useful comment, he said, in very frail voice, that he didn’t want to be misconstrued as ‘begging Nigerians’ for support.

It took another call for the veteran broadcaster to make it clear that he was not soliciting funds because of his condition, even though he disclosed he is receiving treatment at LASUTH and OAUTH.

“My name is Sadiq Daba,” he introduced himself in a feeble voice when told the purpose of the call was to ascertain his health status.

“And I will never ever be a beggar. The way you people (journalists) are going about my case is as if I’m carrying a bowl in hand, moving around Nigeria, begging people; that I am a destitute. I am not.

“Yes, I have health challenges. Yes, I am sick. So, what is the big deal? The way people are taking it, ‘Sadiq Daba is dying’, ‘Sadiq Daba is doing this.’ I’m a journalist. I’m a broadcaster. There are certain ways you can go about it if you want to help somebody. You do not whip up stories to sell your newspaper because you must sell your papers. If I die today, that’s the end of story. I’m no longer news. It’s because I am sick now that I am news.

“Yes, I have challenges but I am not a destitute. If I have been of relevance to my nation and my nation wants to help, so be it. But I am not going to go out of my way to go cap in hand. That is why when your other friend called (The Nation reporter), I said I’m tired. You’re not the only paper who has called me.

“Yes, I am sick. Will I be the first person to be sick? I’m dealing with Prostate, I’m dealing with leukaemia. That is no news. And by the special grace of God, I’ll get over it. I have that faith that God is in control.”

Daba who is currently holed up in Lagos said he is due to take a test on Friday to determine further treatment options.

“If I leave my house, I go to the hospital,” Daba who starred as Bitrus in the now rested soap opera, ‘Cock Crow At Dawn’ and played a major role in October 1, a film by Kunle Afolayan, said.

“If I’m not in the hospital, I’m in my house. I don’t have the luxury of traversing Nigeria as I used to do. I’m over 60. I’m not a small boy.”

He also disclosed that on Friday, he would be going to the hospital to get a biopsy.

“And that will determine whether I would go for proper surgery or not,” he said.

“It is painful. It has to do with the rectal and all of that. You’re battling with Leukaemia, you’re battling with Prostrate… No bi headache or stomach ache. Those ones, you can take tablets and dem don go one time. Dis one na different situation. To God be the glory sha,” he said.

  • Kunle Afolayan’s October 1 is must-see, says Sadiq Daba

Kunle Afolayan’s October 1 is must-see, says Sadiq Daba

At the recently held media screening of October 1, a movie produced and directed by Kunle Afolayan, celebrated broadcaster turned actor, Sadiq Daba, literally spat fire, while lambasting the colonial masters for the age-long ethnic crises in Nigeria.

Daba, who acted Inspector Waziri in the much-anticipated movie scheduled for release on October 1, said though he was approached by the producer while he was on sickbed, he agreed to be part of the production because of its sterling thematic preoccupation.

The veteran broadcaster, who described Afolayan as a slave driver, said October 1 is a must-watch, essentially because it gives a peep into the genesis of the lingering discontent and ethnic crises that have been plaguing the country since Independence.

“Here is a story that is a Nigerian story. Here is a story that explains why it is not the fault of the Igbo man or the Hausa man or the Yoruba man, as it is always peddled all over the place, that there are ethic crises in Nigeria. What about the colonialists who were there before? What did they do to Prince, played by Ademola Adedoyin, the protagonist in the movie? Every day, every minute and every hour, what we see is Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba. But somebody somewhere did something for us to start talking about those differences.

“I am married to a fantastic Yoruba woman. My father-in-law is also a fantastic Yoruba man. But we only have stupid Hausa people, stupid Yoruba people and stupid Igbo people. Why don’t you look for the good ones because there are good people out there? The white man came and threw everybody asunder. Consequently, we are all looking at one other and shouting: ‘You are Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa.’

“I grew up in Sierra Leone. Over there, if you are fighting one Nigerian, you are fighting the entire Nigerians. In fact, I can tell you that the only time I know that we are different is when I pass the Seme border. But out there in Sierra Leone, we are Nigerians; there is nothing like Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa. October 1 is a story of you as a young man; it is also a story of me as an old man. In fact, the story is put together for you to learn that we are even more together than people think,” he said.

October 1 tells the story of a northern Nigeria Police detective, Dan Waziri (Sadiq Daba), who is urgently dispatched by the colonial government to the trading post town of Akote in the Western Region of Nigeria to solve a series of female murders that have struck horror in the hearts and minds of the local community. On getting to Akote, more murders are committed. And with local tension high and volatile, Waziri has a race on his hands to solve the case before even more local women are killed. Matters take a turn for the worse, however, when Waziri discovers that his prime suspect is none other than the highly influential, university-educated son of the King of Akote, Prince Aderopo (Ademola Adedoyin). Intelligent, good-looking, charismatic, witty and daring, the prince proves to be a most complicated adversary for Waziri.

Set against the backdrop of the national celebratory mood of the impending Independence, Waziri and Prince Aderopo indulge in a game of cat and mouse as they try to outwit each other, thereby leading to the climatic end in which the life of a popular local female teacher and village belle, Tawa (Kehinde Bankole), is held in the balance. Waziri has to race against the clock to capture the Prince, save Tawa and solve the crime before the British flag is lowered and the Nigerian flag is raised on October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day.
